A TILE OF TWO GENERATIONS

The ancient game of Mahjong has a fresh set of fans.

Mahjong is experiencing a resurgence among millennials and Gen Z, evolving from a traditional pastime into a dynamic social and cultural phenomenon. Once associated with older generations, the game has found new life through its strategic depth, aesthetic appeal, and communal aspects. Platforms like Mahjong Soul and Mahjong Time have modernized the game, but beyond screens, Fort Lauderdale o ers themed mahjong nights, blending gameplay with music, food, and community bonding. The revival is part of a broader “granny core” trend, where nostalgic activities like knitting and baking are gaining popularity. A few notable local clubs include Mahj on the Beach, which o ers casual, beginner-friendly lessons, social play sessions and themed events; Fort Lauderdale LGBTA Social Meetup Group, with “Mah-Jongg & Lunch” sessions every Friday at the Galleria Mall, and Modern Mahjong at the Ft. Taylor MADE

KATINA TAYLOR’S PASSION FOR HEALTH, FITNESS AND FUN HAVE COLORED HER ENTIRE LIFE—AND IT SHOWS.

WELLNESS RETREATS ARE TRENDING, AND FLORIDA’S AMELIA ISLAND SETS THE SCENE FOR A GETAWAY SATURATED IN NATURAL BEAUTY.

Photography by James Woodley | Hair and makeup by Pablo Rivera

tep into Katina Taylor’s world and you’ll quickly realize tness isn’t a phase for her—it’s a way of life. From her childhood in Texas to her presentday life in South Florida, Taylor has long embraced movement as both a ritual and a roadmap. In her life—woven with athletic achievement, family devotion, and a missiondriven nonpro t—passion, purpose, and perspiration go hand-in-hand.

“I grew up between two small Texas towns—White Deer and Pampa—surrounded by wide-open spaces and an even wider imagination,” she says. “We turned everything into a competition.” Ping-pong battles. Diving contests. Long-distance baseball hits. “As the youngest and only girl, I had to be tough to keep up,” she laughs. “If I wasn’t chasing balls, I was being used as a weight when my brothers didn’t have a bench press.”

That grit and competitive spirit burned bright across generations. Her two older brothers went on to make sports history: Bart, a record-holder in the U.S. Track & Field 40+ Pentathlon, and Zach, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame who played 13 seasons as a linebacker (12 of them with the Miami Dolphins). But Katina, ever the cheerleader and motivator, carved her own path—one rooted in nurturing others through movement and mindset.

Today, her children have inherited that same athletic DNA and discipline: Isaiah, 22, plays safety for the University of Miami; Mason, 21, is a tight end for the New York Jets; and Zoë, 19, is a beach volleyball player at Arizona State. “Sports came naturally to them,” she says. “But more than the genes, it’s their grit and their work ethic that inspire me.”

Taylor’s approach to tness is rooted in balance. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about consistency,” she notes. Her routine isn’t rigid, but it is intentional. Most mornings begin with gratitude, followed by a workout— whether it’s a sweat session at Per4orm, Pilates by Andrea, Fit45, yoga at Yoga Joint, or a beachside walk.

“That morning movement sets the tone for my whole day. It energizes me to show up as my best self.” When she’s traveling, she adapts. “Being consistent doesn’t mean doing the same thing every day,” she says. “It’s about making movement non-negotiable, even if it looks di erent depending on where I am or how I feel.”

That self-awareness, however, wasn’t always second nature. “In my 20s, I could eat anything and bounce back,” she admits. “But I had no real understanding of nutrition.” Her 30s brought more structure—strength training, cleaner eating, and a deeper connection between food and energy.

Now approaching 50, her focus has shi ed toward longevity. “It’s less about how I look, more about how I feel. Movement is my therapy.”

Katina’s beauty philosophy mirrors her wellness

journey: glow from the inside out. “Con dence starts from within,” she says. “Instead of xating on aws, I try to see the woman who is kind, resilient, and wants to help others.” She credits a clean lifestyle—little to no alcohol, hydration, and prayer—as the foundation for her youthful energy. Her secret weapons include a tight ponytail for an instant faceli , a good moisturizer, and her daughter’s tips for that coveted dewy makeup look.

But if you really want to see what lights her up, ask about Camp Katina.

Nineteen years ago, a chance o er from West Broward Gymnastics Academy in Davie sparked a dream. The gym’s owner, Silvana Hude, suggested a collaboration with Katina’s nonpro t work. That conversation planted the seed for Camp Katina: Cartwheels to Character, a one-of-a-kind experience for underserved girls in South Florida.

Every August, the gym transforms into a high-energy haven for 65 girls from local organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Overtown Youth Center, and Miami Beach PAL. “They walk in to see t-shirts, hair bows, backpacks—all waiting for them, like a celebration of who they are,” says Katina. “It’s about more than gymnastics—it’s a place for joy, connection, and con dence.” With a focus on movement, music, teamwork, and self-worth, the camp is an emotional reset for girls who o en face challenging realities. “We feel it in the hugs, the smiles, the stories we hear long a er camp ends. The seeds we plant really do grow.”

Camp Katina is now one of several programs under Champions4Character, Inc., the nonpro t Katina and her family founded to upli youth through sports and life skills. Her daughter Zoë runs a beach volleyball camp called Dig Deeper, and her sons donate NFL game tickets to give local kids a glimpse into the world of professional sports—on and o the eld.

With all the demands of motherhood, philanthropy, and personal health, Taylor admits she’s not immune to falling o the wagon. “One skipped workout turns into a week, and suddenly it’s been a month,” she says candidly. “A er a knee injury and surgery, I lost so much muscle. That season reminded me how important it is to just keep showing up.”

These days, she gives herself more grace. “I used to think a workout only counted if it was intense. Now I appreciate the power of a walk, a stretch—whatever keeps me moving and mentally clear.”

Through it all, she remains grounded in gratitude and faith. “My motto? ‘Too blessed to be stressed,’” she says. “When things feel overwhelming, I shi my perspective. If I can use my time or heart to help someone else, that’s where my peace comes from.”

Girls at Camp Katina literally jump for joy as they build confidence and a sense of community.

NOT That DO This

The beauty world is buzzing with innovations — from slathering regenerative salmon DNA to using cold plasma gadgets and lasers that rejuvenate the skin with minimal downtime, plus new takes on classic procedures like lip filler. See what experts recommend swapping out in the search for the fountain of youth.

SWAP THIS:

Aggressive CO2 Laser Resurfacing

FOR THIS: Customizable Laser Like Tetra CoolPeel

ove the idea of baby-smooth skin from deep ablative CO2 lasers, but hate the scary-looking peeling and long healing process? Chad Van Horn, PA-C, an NCCPA boardcertified physician assistant and the owner of Icon Aesthetics & Wellness in Pompano, says traditional CO2 lasers that remove entire layers of skin are now taking a backseat to modern customizable lasers with less downtime. “The reality is that most clients aren’t willing to endure the downtime of older CO2 lasers, because you’re literally a third-degree burn victim. Your skin is peeling off your face and you have to isolate,” Van Horn says. “The recovery tends to be anywhere from four to eight weeks.” Instead, Van Horn prefers the Tetra CoolPeel, a fractional ablative carbon dioxide laser that targets the skin in columns and allows practitioners to adjust the pulse power, duration, and column spacing for customized treatments. “It gives me control as the practitioner to work with the patient's needs,” he says, adding: “You can also dial it down to a mild setting that’s safe for all skin types, which is not true of traditional CO2.”

The CoolPeel can be used for a laser facial glowup that reduces fine lines and wrinkles, minimizes pore size and improves skin texture, to more intense treatments that address deeper lines, acne scars or raised scars. “My two favorite areas to treat with this device are wrinkles under the eyes and those upper lip lines known as ‘smoker’s lines,’” Van Horn says.

The down time ranges from a couple of days to a few weeks for deeper treatments. Depending on the treatment intensity, patients can expect redness, mild swelling, scabbing, and dry, flaking skin, and it’s vital to stay out of the sun. “My two favorite areas to treat with this device are wrinkles under the eyes and those upper lip lines known as ‘smoker’s lines,’” Van Horn says. While results can be seen after one treatment, three to four treatments are often needed for scars and deeper wrinkles. Visit icon-wellness.com.

COST: Traditional CO2 often requires general anesthesia, so the price can range from $5,000 to $7,000. The Tetra CoolPeel costs $800 to $1400, depending on the areas treated.

SWAP THIS:

Microneedling

THIS: Regenerative Microneedling with Salmon DNA or Exosomes

hile microneedling—a cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the skin to stimulate the body's natural wound-healing response for a collagen and elastin boost—is not new, aestheticians are now adding regenerative ingredients to achieve even better anti-aging results. Courtney Smith, of Glow By Courtney Grace in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, has a devoted following for her SkinPen microneedling treatments, which she is now elevating with salmon DNA or brightening exosomes. “Using these in conjunction with the SkinPen supercharges the results,” Smith says.

The aesthetician slathers on a product from Toskani that contains a key component of salmon sperm DNA during or right after a microneedling treatment—which allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeper and max its rejuvenating effects. “The salmon DNA molecules help repair damaged skin, improve hydration, boost elasticity and stimulate collagen production,” Smith says. “I use this on the face, neck, décolleté, under the eyes or hands, in a series of three to four sessions, spaced about three to four weeks apart.”

She also uses AnteAGE exosomes, which are rich in growth factors derived from human stem cells, to amplify elastin and collagen production too. “Exosomes are tiny packages filled with regenerative instructions,” Smith says. “I describe them as text messages sent from one cell to another, telling them how to heal, regenerate and how to heal better.” She notes that when paired with microneedling—which often causes a red, sunburn-type

effect—the exosomes can cut down on inflammation and redness by 50 percent. “You’re going to have one to two days of dryness, and in a week you’re totally healed and glowing.” Visit glowbycourtneygrace.com.

COST: SkinPen treatment costs around $350; adding salmon DNA tacks on an extra $150, and $250 extra for exosomes.

SWAP THIS:

Overf lled Lips

FOR THIS: Facial Balancing

verfilled and protruding “duck lips” be gone. The future of lip filler is all about facial harmony. Dr. Ben Shatil, a boardcertified anesthesiologist and master cosmetic injector at YS Aesthetics in Dania Beach, has famously developed his own signature lip technique for the perfectly plump pout—so unique, he’s currently patenting it. The trick: Every patient that comes in receives an initial facial balancing assessment. “Someone who comes in for lips but has a recessed chin or a nose that hooks down, to get the results they want, I tell them we should also address the chin and curvature of the nose,” Shatil says. “So overall, the profile view looks more balanced and more aesthetically pleasing.”

“I probably do 30 to 50 injection points throughout the lip procedure, while most traditionally do 4 to 6 injection points.”

While we can’t give away all of his secrets, part of his hallmark lip-filling technique involves numerous injections.

“I probably do 30 to 50 injection points throughout the lip procedure, while most traditionally do four to six injection points,”

Shatil reveals. “It’s a microbolstering technique where I’m putting small amounts of filler in anatomically correct areas and enhancing someone’s natural lip shape while correcting any asymmetry. The final result gives a very flat-side profile to the lips instead of the protruding ‘duck lips’, while still giving height.”

After the initial treatments—where he uses only one syringe at a time to build up to flawless lips— Shatil also has a policy that patients can only get their lips injected once a year. “If you put in too much filler in a short amount of time,” he says, “the filler starts to leave the borders of the lips, and you get migration or puffy lips.” Visit ysaesthetics.com.

COST: Lips cost a flat rate of $900, facial balancing runs $2,500 to $3,000.

SWAP THIS: Ultherapy or Radiofrequency

FOR THIS: Cold Plasma

When it comes to tightening the skin without surgery, forego often painful procedures like ultherapy or even radio frequency—which some studies show could cause fat loss—for painless cold plasma treatments. “We don’t want to flush the fat, we want to restore the cells, and that’s what cold plasma does,” says Rachel Levy, a master trainer, practitioner, and distributor of cold plasma in Miami. “Cold plasma shortens the fibers of collagen and elastin and is actually a healing energy. As we age, our skin is breaking down, and this gives the mitochondria the building blocks to restore itself.”

Levy utilizes both Jet Plasma technology, a handheld device she can use on the face or anywhere on the body that creates a plasma field to deliver energy into the skin; and the NuVissa Plasma Pen, with its plasma current modality utilizing stainless-steel probes to deliver plasma energy into the skin to stimulate collagen, elastin and remodel the skin. “Both tighten and shrink the skin. Think of it as shrink-wrapping the skin to hug the face like it did before,” she says, adding that the benefits of cold plasma go much further than tightening. “It’s actually changing the appearance of the skin, because the healthier cell is not going to have the same amount of skin discoloration or pigmentation.”

Both treatments are painless and there is no downtime. “You might have a little warmth or a tingly feeling, which actually feels kind of good,” she says of the 30-minute to one-hour sessions. For a mini-facelift effect, six to 10 sessions are recommended, and Levy says that results improve over six weeks and last until you age out of them.

@rachellevyskin

COST: $400 - $600 a session.

Island Reset

WELLNESS RETREATS ARE TRENDING, AND FLORIDA’S AMELIA ISLAND SETS THE SCENE FOR A GETAWAY SATURATED IN NATURAL BEAUTY.

s I drive beneath moss-draped tree canopies, a sense of calm washes over me—the kind only Amelia Island can summon. Located just 30 minutes from Jacksonville, this northernmost barrier island is a sanctuary of wild beauty, where forested trails twist like storybook paths and wide beaches stretch out beneath rolling dunes. A rare Florida gem where it’s easy to get in touch with nature, and yourself, as it still feels mostly untouched by mass tourism.

I’m attending a three-day, longevity-themed wellness retreat at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The resort is be tting of a serene getaway any time of year, thanks to its prime spot on a secluded beach where glorious morning sunrises are worth rising early for, and where long walks on the beach to scan for dolphins are daily rituals. With wellness getaways trending, the resort is committed to an annual wellness retreat with di erent themes and speakers, such as longevity guru Kalindi Ho mann who hosted sessions throughout the weekend.

The rst day, our small group was challenged by Ho mann’s question of what wellness means to us. Almost immediately, our small group collectively agreed: longevity isn’t so much about how long you live, but about living in good health for the time we’re here. One attendee recently

received a shocking cancer diagnosis and was working on self-care, while a couple from Boca Raton booked the retreat as part of their commitment to a yearly reset together. Others were struggling with sleep or negative thoughts, which brought me to my intention for the weekend. I wanted help quieting negative or fearful thoughts that seem to dominate my mind and the world’s daily newsfeed.

TOP: Aerial view of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. ABOVE: Fresh fish and other Blue Zone foods are plentiful on the buffet.

We’d wake in the mornings for gentle movement like yoga, stretching and “no-talking” beach walks (which proved di cult for a group of mostly women who became fast friends), and huddle up in a quiet conference room for longevity learning sessions. As someone who is sleep-challenged, I gravitated to Ho mann’s yoga nidra session where we slipped on eye masks and lay on mats curled up with blankets, allowing her so voice and mediative guidance to lull us into deep relaxation. I alternated somewhere between vivid dreams and awareness. “You all look like babies,” she exclaimed as we emerged from the session, our faces wiped clear of stress. Yoga nidra is meant to prime the body for a good night’s sleep and I slept hard that night. The next day Ho mann led us through breathing exercises, another pillar of longevity, to showcase the power of breathing on our nervous system and emotional healing; while the nal day, our yoga and movement instructor Cassie, bathed us in a vibrational sound bowl session.

There were no salads in sight over the weekend—unless you wanted one, of course— but the rst night was lled with a bu et of Blue Zone foods, ranging from nutrient-rich soups to seared local sh, and hearty breakfasts at Coast restaurant that included peanut butter overnight oats, omelets, zucchini

Yoga is an integral part of the holistic experience, which emphasizes the power of movement and breathing.

bread, bowls and avocado toast. A treat was dinner at the resort’s newly renovated Salt restaurant, where the chef created a special menu for us and turned items like artichokes into delicious works of art.

Part of the retreat focused on pampering treatments at the expansive Spa & Wellness Center, where attendees could choose everything from glow-up hydrafacials to rhythmic bamboo massages and stints in the red-light therapy beds to ght in ammation. While I soaked in the bubbling hot tub and sweated in the sauna, the spa’s private pool is a coveted amenity where you can zone out or connect with friends (there were plenty of girl gangs laughing and sipping bubbly). And you don’t have to wait for the Ritz’ annual wellness retreat: the spa regularly o ers personalized wellness journeys and full-day retreats where you can choose a mix of spa services and wellness experiences like forest bathing or nap/sleep therapy, paired with lunch and a takehome gi .

But the true gi of a wellness retreat at the Ritz is the natural good looks and easy tranquility of Amelia Island. The hotel’s knowledgeable naturalists will lead guests on water and land excursions to look for pink spoonbills or dolphins (some of the guests even spotted bunnies and tortoises around the resort), and Amelia Island is one of the few places in Florida where you can ride horses on the beach. It’s easy to escape reality at nearby Boneyard Beach, an otherworldly beach in Big Talbot Island State Park that’s scattered with massive dri wood trees. A er a long walk down a tucked-away path, there’s the chance to climb the dri wood giants and marvel at the spectacle as you listen to the surf roll in and out.

On my drive back to Fort Lauderdale a er the retreat wrapped, a question that Ho mann challenged our group to ask ourselves when stressed, oated through my mind: “Is this worth giving up my peace?.” At a time where our minds are constantly bombarded by scary news headlines and FOMO-inducing social media feeds, I vowed to keep that question on daily repeat. ■

THE CURATED LIFE OF Jessica Cristobal

Wife, mom, philanthropist, activist, Mrs. Florida International—Jessica Cristobal is all of the above and more. Whether she’s supporting youngsters through organizations, raising her two sons, traveling the country rooting on her husband Mario’s Hurricanes or just basking in the glow of life in the Magic City, this lady has mastered the art of balance—and looking like a million bucks no matter what she’s doing.

Morning ritual: Every morning, I lay in my bed for about 5 minutes and pray a prayer of “Thank You for waking me up to see another day,” and then I usually have an organic mushroom blend coffee with collagen and MCT oil

and a hearty breakfast so I get lots of protein in before I go work out at Sweat 440, take a Pilates class, or meet with my trainer and a get good lift in for the day.

Workout that always makes you feel powerful: I love to work out with my award-winning fitness trainer, Amanda Lifestyle, and on the days I’m not able to see her, I like to get a quick workout in at Sweat 440 by our house. It’s a fun, dynamic group class that offers a great lift session in 40 minutes.

What keeps you sane while living the busy life and raising the boys? I’m constantly aware of the need for grounding, so I

will lay in our red light sauna, go to the ocean or take a nice stretchy classic Pilates class to slow myself down and honor what my system needs.

Outside of your home, your happy place: I love to go in the ocean. I feel like it recalibrates my system and makes me instantly happy. What a blessing it is to live in Miami. We are immersed in warm tropical beauty 24/7 and I love being back in the sunshine!

Can’t-live-without bag: I have a black on-black Versace medusa tote since 2016 that is still in perfect condition, and it’s understated and chic.

Shopping spot in South Florida: Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue

Shopping spot anywhere else: Las Vegas is fun for luxury brand sourcing, and I also enjoy shopping at upscale resale boutiques whenever I travel. I love to find treasures that are one of a kind, or special vintage pieces.

Prized possession: Aside from my children, my second favorite item is a pair of antique wooden angel wings from an Italian statue, bought at the Miami Beach Antique Fair years ago.

Causes I'm passionate about: I'm on the Board of Voices for Children, supporting foster youth in Miami-Dade, and involved with The Embrace Girls Foundation, which fosters health, confidence, education, and ambition in girls at after-school programs in Broward and Miami-Dade.

What’s still on your to-do list? As Mrs. Florida International 2025, I will be competing in the Mrs. International Pageant soon. I am also planning a milestone birthday celebration with my twin sister in April as well as Mario and my 20th wedding anniversary in the coming year. It is also our goal to win the ACC championship and the National Championship for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team. GO CANES!

DOCTOR OF ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE MEDICINE, FOUNDER

AROHMA THERAPY WELLNESS COLLECTIVE

5220 S. University Drive 209-210 Davie, FL 33328 ArohmaTherapy.com

What do you nd is the biggest misconception patients have about acupuncture?

That acupuncture is painful. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and smooth, o ering a very gentle application. A er an acupuncture point is carefully stimulated, endorphins are released. This biochemical response helps reduce pain and create a sense of well-being. Acupuncture also naturally boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine, the neurotransmitters linked to emotional balance. A large consideration should always be given to who performs your needling; doctors of acupuncture have spent years mastering needling with anatomical intentionality and dedication to achieve the highest level of care.

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

My greatest satisfaction in this work arises from patient outcomes. Over the years, the impact of this medicine has humbled me repeatedly and I feel so honored that my practice, Arohma Therapy, has been awarded “Best Acupuncture” six years in a row! Many patients nd their way to my o ce with a variety of health concerns, from fertility challenges to physical pain. I believe my success is highly contingent on the individualized care TCM provides. This medicine holds space for each person to be uniquely cared for by regulating their nervous system, reducing pain, balancing hormones, and encouraging a peaceful state of mind.

What advice do you have for patients to live a healthier life?

Our body is in constant communication with us. Tune into your body’s signals so that you can prioritize your needs. We may easily recognize when we are hungry or tired but may be less inclined to observe other indicators that our body is overwhelmed and burned out. Our modern relationship to the intrinsic intelligence of our body’s wisdom is being bypassed by busyness. A few key areas to take inventory over are sleep quality, energetic endurance, emotional regulation, and physical movement. Cultivating a mindbody connection, and prioritizing your needs is one of the most powerful rst steps to fostering a healthier, more vibrant life.

DOCTORS BEST WELLNESS CENTER

What advice do you have for patients/clients to live a healthier life?

The best investment anyone can make is in their own health. That starts with getting real answers, not just symptom management. Functional medicine allows us to identify root causes—whether it’s hormone imbalance, nutrient de ciencies, or in ammation—and create individualized plans that prevent disease before it starts. My advice: get your labs done annually, manage stress proactively, move your body daily, and don’t ignore what your body is trying to tell you.

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

There’s nothing more ful lling than helping someone reclaim their vitality. Whether it’s a man struggling with low testosterone or a woman navigating perimenopause, seeing lives transformed through personalized wellness care gives my work deep meaning. I also feel proud to carry on the legacy of my late husband, Dr. Val Manocchio, who founded our center with a vision for longevity and preventive care.

Does cosmetic care o en equate to a better state of mind?

Absolutely. When someone feels good about how they look, their con dence and mental health improve. That’s why we’ve expanded into aesthetics—to o er a full mind-body approach to wellness. It’s not about vanity, it’s about vitality.

Who inspires you?

My two sons inspire me every day. One is studying to become a PA and the other is in medical school. Watching them pursue their dreams with purpose reminds me why I do what I do.

What is your health-care specialty?

I am a board-certified cardiologist and internal medicine physician. I have a boutique style medical practice located in East Fort Lauderdale.

How is AI and other technology changing your eld?

Technology is transforming medicine in exciting ways. In my practice, AI is helping with everything from improving diagnostics to streamlining day-to-day tasks. For example, we use AI-assisted ECGs that help detect subtle heart abnormalities earlier than ever before. I also utilize Olleyes, an innovative, portable visual screening device powered by AI, making it easier to assess eye health right in the o ce. Even writing o ce notes has become more e cient with AI-based dictation tools, allowing me to spend less time typing and more time focused on my patients.

What’s something about your business/practice, or the services you offer, that people may not know about— but should know about?

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

I tend to focus on how to prevent a disease or treat it before it becomes a much bigger issue. The field of cardiology is vast, ranging from the prevention of heart disease to replacing cardiac valves. While I love and appreciate my colleagues who perform life-saving procedures, I would rather my patients never have to undergo a procedure or major surgery to begin with if I can prevent it! I spend over 20-30 minutes with each patient (and in some instances more) focusing on in-depth questions and diagnostic tests and in some instances, genetic testing. By doing this, we are able to potentially get to the root of a condition before it causes major problems.

Can you share an experience with a patient/client that speaks to the core philosophy of your practice/ business?

For me, the greatest satisfaction comes from building true relationships with my patients. As a concierge physician, I’m fortunate to practice medicine the way it should be — with time to listen, explain, and personalize care. It’s rewarding to prevent disease rather than just react to it, especially when I help patients avoid heart attacks or manage conditions before they become serious. Knowing I’m making a lasting impact on someone’s life and health is what drives me every day.

What’s the biggest misconception patients have when you rst meet them?

Many new patients think they only need to see a cardiologist if they already have a serious heart problem. My goal is prevention. Whether it’s advanced screenings, in-depth risk assessments, or lifestyle planning, I help patients stay ahead of disease. Another common misconception is that concierge care is just about access. While 24/7 availability is part of it, the real value is having a physician who knows your entire story, proactively manages your health, and partners with you long-term.

My practice is based on communication. By having a small concierge practice, my patients are able to communicate with me 24/7. While the vast majority of the time this is not necessary, there have been a few times where this open communication saved an ER visit and has actually saved a life. A few years back a patient contacted me in the middle of the night with palpitations. This happened previously, so I recommended a heart monitor for her to have at home. This particular night, she had another episode and was able to send the strips from her device right to my phone. She was actually having a malignant arrhythmia and was advised to go to the hospital immediately for treatment. This ability to communicate and send data real-time was invaluable!

REJUVCHIP

Orlando, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Doral and Brickell Rejuvchip.com | 1-888-305-CHIP (2447 )

How are AI and other technologies changing your eld?

The recent explosion of AI has had an amazing impact on my practice. I’m noticing my patients are arriving to consultations more informed and asking the right questions. Informed patients have a better experience because their expectations are more realistic, and they take a larger part in their care. Furthermore, they’re more compliant with taking all the indicated supplements, and leading a lifestyle more conducive to an optimal experience with their Rejuvchip.

What’s the biggest misconception patients/clients have when you rst meet them?

When patients come to their initial Rejuvchip testosterone pellet consultation, I’d say the biggest misconception that both men and women have is that testosterone is only important for sexual desire, enjoyment, and overall function. Of course, natural testosterone releasing into the body in a slow and constant fashion, as is the case with our bioidentical subcutaneous hormone chips, is absolutely the best thing we can do to maintain and even improve our sex lives. However, beyond all that, there are other important things in life. Namely, improved memory, energy and muscle mass. Not to mention, increased bone density, relief from in ammation and even better sleep. So, they come in expecting only a better sex life, and leave realizing they’ve found the fountain of youth!

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

When my patients can make important life changes such as becoming active again and getting o some of their chronic medications, this gives me immense satisfaction. Providing people with hormone balance helps prevent disease, gives them vital energy and incredible relief from the changes associated with aging. God bless the chip!

DR. KERICE PINKNEY, MD, FAAP

PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGIST/ ONCOLOGIST DIRECTOR, PEDIATRIC RESIDENCY PROGRAM

JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Hollywood, FL | 954-265-2234

What advice would you give patients to live a healthier life?

As a pediatric hematologist/ oncologist, I partner with parents and families daily to help children battle cancer. Life is precious and throughout my career I have seen that small things make a big di erence. Having a healthier life is multilayered—spending time with family and friends, being active, making healthy food choices and enjoying nature. Remember your sunscreen! While these things seem simple, they make a positive di erence in each person’s health and wellbeing.

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

My greatest satisfaction comes from seeing my patients ful ll their hopes and dreams. I want each child to have a life where they can achieve whatever goals their heart desires. The diagnosis of cancer is devastating for the child, their parents and their entire family. In addition to medical treatments, it o en involves missed days at

school, missed birthday celebrations with families and friends, missed work days for parents—the missing of normalcy. Being able to return to ‘regular life’ is an amazing feat for my patients. I celebrate each milestone with them. These milestones are varied and unique to each child. One of my proudest moments was watching a former patient graduate from medical school. She is now on her way to becoming an oncologist. Witnessing my patients have the successes they want to achieve in their lives makes my career rewarding.

Who inspires you?

My patients inspire me every day. Their resilience is astounding. I am also inspired by my patients’ parents who have to navigate life changing decisions- always hoping that they are making the best choices for their child during times of extraordinary crises. At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, our team is dedicated to walking hand in hand with each family through their journey.

LYTENING HYDRATION

(954) 540-0455

gabriel@lyteninghydration.com

What is the biggest misconception clients have when you rst meet them?

That hydration is just about drinking more water. In reality, proper hydration means replenishing electrolytes lost through sweat, stress, and daily movement. Lytening follows the gold standard in rehydration — the same guidelines used by the World Health Organization for oral rehydration therapy. Our formula enables rapid rehydration, which is why we’re trusted on sidelines from youth sports to college and semi-professional programs.

We’ve also developed proprietary, sportspeci c hydration protocols tailored to practice, game day, and recovery. These strategies have helped teams reduce cramping, prevent heatrelated illnesses, and keep athletes performing at their best.

What gives you professional satisfaction?

Working with athletic trainers, coaches, and athletes, especially at the high school level, is what fuels me. There’s so much raw potential in those environments, and I get to play a part in helping shape the leaders of tomorrow. Sports have always been a big part of my life, and now I get to, and now I get to be around what I love while delivering a healthier, more e ective solution focused on player safety and performance.

Who inspires you?

My parents. They came to the United States with nothing, but through relentless work, faith, and sacri ce, they built a life for our family. Their example taught me to never make excuses, to bet on myself, and to keep moving forward no matter how hard it gets. A lot of what I do is to honor them, not just by working hard, but by building something meaningful that can impact others the way their sacri ces impacted me.

What are the biggest misconceptions patients have when you rst meet them?

A surprising number of patients, especially a er an auto accident, believe that if they don’t feel pain right away, they’re ne. That’s one of the biggest mistakes. Hidden injuries like whiplash or nerve issues can take days or weeks to surface.

Another big myth? That chiropractic is just a “quick crack.” In reality, it’s about targeted healing, especially a er trauma. The care our team has provided over the past 4 decades focuses on reducing in ammation, restoring movement, and preventing chronic pain.

Finally, people o en are very nervous for their rst treatment. Concerns that it will be painful or risky. It’s not. In fact, our approach with all patients is extremely gentle and speci c. We use diagnostic imaging, detailed assessments, and proven techniques to treat safely and e ectively. The goal isn’t just short-term relief, it’s long-term recovery.

What advice do you have for patients to live a healthier life…

The human body is built to heal itself , that’s not just philosophy, it’s supported by science. Research shows that the central nervous system plays a crucial role in self-regulation and healing. But like any complex system, it needs a clear path and occasional guidance, especially a er something disruptive, like an sports injury or auto accident. Chiropractic care provides that structure. Spinal manipulation can reduce in ammation, improve nervous system function, and help the body heal more e ciently a er musculoskeletal trauma.

I o en remind patients that living a healthier life comes down to consistent, everyday habits. One of the most powerful things you can do is move your body regularly. Whether it’s walking, stretching, yoga, or strength training, daily movement helps keep your joints mobile, your muscles engaged, and your spine functioning properly.

In today’s world, many jobs are highly sedentary, which leads to long hours of sitting and poor posture , o en without us even realizing it. Over time, this creates tight hips, weak core muscles, and spinal imbalances, which can contribute to chronic back and neck pain.

On top of that, we’re constantly looking down at our phones. This repetitive forward head posture , now commonly referred to as “text neck,” places excessive strain on the cervical spine. Research has shown that for every inch the head tilts forward, the pressure on the neck doubles, accelerating wear and tear on spinal discs.

Taking regular movement breaks, and being mindful of how you sit, stand, and use your devices can go a long way in preventing pain and long-term damage. Small habits, practiced daily, create long-term health.

Reimaginelifecounseling.com

How are AI and other technologies changing your eld?

The mental health counseling eld has been increasingly changing due to AI and other technologies. On one hand, AI and other technologies have been increasing accessibility, e ciency, and personalization. AI-powered chatbots and virtual therapists provide 24/7 support, which helps bridge gaps in care for underserved populations. Additionally, telehealth platforms expand access to counseling services, particularly in remote areas. However, these advancements also raise ethical concerns, including data privacy and the importance of maintaining human empathy. It is important that clients receive empathetic, individualized, and personalized care with ongoing guidance to ensure mental health stability.

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

The mental health counseling eld brings me an immense amount of satisfaction in many ways. When I rst began working towards my professional license in 2015, I didn’t know what this eld would mean to me, but I quickly began to realize it once I started working with my clients. The rst time I meet with a new client, I strive to ensure that he or she feels safe and welcome; building rapport with my clients is at the utmost importance for me. It is a beautiful thing to see my clients open-up and trust the process, but ultimately, helping clients meet their personal goals and build mental strength and control brings me the greatest satisfaction.

Who inspires you?

My family is my biggest inspiration. When I am working with my clients, I treat them in a way and create a space that would be good enough for any one of my family members, especially my daughters. Every time I step into my o ce, I practice empathy and provide therapy in a way that my family would be proud of and in a way that every client deserves.

WESTON MEDICAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS 1605 Town Center Blvd., Ste. D, Weston, FL 33326 954-389-1800 | www.westondiet.com

How is AI and other technologies changing your eld?

AI and emerging technologies are transforming internal medicine and metabolic health in profound ways. We’re now able to personalize treatment plans using predictive analytics, remote monitoring, and even AI-driven nutritional guidance. These tools help identify subtle patterns in lab results, glucose data, hormone uctuations, and lifestyle habits that might be missed otherwise. For patients managing obesity, diabetes, or hormonal imbalances, this means earlier interventions and more precise care. AI doesn’t replace the physicianpatient relationship, it enhances it by freeing up time and allowing us to focus more deeply on the human aspects of healing.

What’s the biggest misconception patients/clients have about what it takes to live a healthier life?

The biggest misconception is that health is purely about willpower or quick xes. Many patients come in believing that diet and exercise alone will solve everything, or that medications are the only option. In reality, sustainable health is about balance between hormones, metabolism, mindset, and lifestyle. It’s not just calories in and calories out; it’s how your body is processing and responding to those calories. A truly healthy life includes stress management, restorative sleep, hormone balance, mindful nutrition, and movement that feels

good. That’s where an integrative medicine approach makes all the di erence, by combining the best of conventional medicine with evidence based holistic practices, we address the root causes and support the body’s natural ability to heal.

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

The most rewarding part of my work is witnessing transformation, not just in lab results, but in con dence, energy, and quality of life. Helping someone reverse prediabetes, regain hormonal balance, or lose weight sustainably a er years of struggle is incredibly ful lling. But even more meaningful is when a patient says, “I feel like myself again.” That’s the true goal, not just adding years to life, but adding life to years.

Who inspires you?

I’m inspired by my patients, their resilience, their trust, and their determination to change their lives. But I’m also deeply inspired by the growing community of integrative physicians who are bridging the gap between traditional medicine and lifestyle medicine. Clinicians like Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Sara Gottfried have paved the way for blending science with soul, and that’s the direction I believe medicine must go. Healing is not just about protocols; it’s about partnership.

STEPHEN G. GEORGE, MD

MEDICAL DIRECTOR, PEDIATRIC SPINE SURGERY

Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedic, Sports Medicine & Spine Institute 786-624-2225

nicklauschildrens.org/spine

What gives you satisfaction in your eld?

As a pediatric spine surgeon, I have the privilege of helping children with spinal disorders—whether present at birth or conditions that develop over time. These disorders can have a profound impact not only physically, but emotionally as well. It’s important to recognize how much a spinal condition can a ect a young person’s sense of self. Treatment o en involves education and conservative measures, and in some cases, surgery is necessary. Regardless of the approach, what brings me the greatest satisfaction is witnessing a child who once felt de ned or limited by their condition grow into a resilient, con dent, and unstoppable young adult. To be part of that transformation is an incredible honor.

What’s the biggest misconception patients have when you rst meet them?

One of the most common conditions I treat is scoliosis in children, which is an abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine. A common misconception among patients and their families is that scoliosis is painful or physically limiting. This is rarely the case. Most children with scoliosis experience no pain and can lead completely active lives—even a er surgery in more severe cases. In fact, you’d be surprised to know how many high-level athletes have been treated for scoliosis.

Who inspires you?

Without a doubt, my two incredible children (ages 5 ½, and 1 ½). I’m inspired by their ability to wake up each morning, with a renewed sense of innocent curiosity, love, hope, and energy. It’s simply amazing. They innately trust that my wife and I will not let them down and always do our best. This motivates me as a father, husband, and surgeon.

What’s the biggest misconception patients/clients have when you rst meet them?

Many people have heard and read con icting information about the safety of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy (BHRT). I work to dispel the myths, misconceptions and misinformation regarding the safety of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. I have recently published my third book, Are You Hormone Curious? The Science of Hormone Therapy for Men and Women Explained. You can order it for no charge on my practice website, LowTEFlorida.com, or you can stop in at my o ce and pick up a book. I love sharing the science and safety behind hormone therapy.

What advice do you have for patients/ clients to live a healthier life?

There are many factors involved in living a healthy life. I personalize the treatments based on the patients’ speci c issues and their lab work. Balancing hormones, optimizing thyroid and lling in nutritional gaps is key. However, they must commit to doing their part ~ Diet changes, exercise, self-care, etc. We talk about “balancing hormones”—not only do they need to be balanced in you, but in your partner, too.

What gives you professional satisfaction?

Many of my new patients come in feeling poor, with fatigue, brain fog, low libido, weight gain, etc. I love my work because rst, I can educate the patient during our free telephone consultation, reviewing their labs line by line, mapping out a plan for health and happiness, and then I make it happen! It is so rewarding to hear and see the changes my treatments make in people’s lives.

EYE SURGEONS & CONSULTANTS

4651 Sheridan Street, Suite # 100, Hollywood, FL 33021 954-894-1500 | www.myeyesurgeons.com

What was the most rewarding experience in your profession?

I am a pioneer of five-minute laser cataract surgery and recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. Cataract surgery previously was highly invasive whereby the patient had a shot to the eye, and a large incision closed with numerous sutures at the conclusion of the procedure. Now, a laser can perform 90% of the procedure flawlessly in about 30 seconds. From start to finish, this painless procedure takes only five minutes which includes implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). There are no shots, no stitches, nor any patches! The patient can resume normal activities the very next day including driving, working, and exercising. I personally wore eyeglasses from age 6 until 56 years old, and contact lenses from age 13 until 56, when I had a colleague perform the 5-minute laser cataract surgery with implantation of a multifocal lens on my own eyes, one week apart. I have not worn glasses

nor contact lenses in the seven years since the July 2014 laser procedures. My quality of vision is outstanding for driving, viewing a computer, and reading, including all the focal lengths in between.

There are a lot of health and wellness professionals in South Florida. What separates you and your practice from others in your field?

For decades, South Florida physicians have called me “The physician’s physician.” I have had the honor and privilege to serve as the ophthalmologist to several hundred physicians (and their family members) in South Florida. The physicians in the area know which physicians have certain areas of expertise and utilize this inside knowledge to seek out the best of the best medical and surgical care for themselves and their family members. Additionally, I have physicians, including fellow ophthalmologists, come statewide to seek my care at Eye Surgeons & Consultants, especially for laser cataract surgery and laser glaucoma surgery.

UNDERSTANDING PSORIASIS: A DERMATOLOGIST’S PERSPECTIVE

NO MORE FIREWORKS IN THE BEDROOM?

Have you lost that loving feeling?

As we enter Psoriasis Awareness Month, it’s important to spotlight this chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Psoriasis is a complex autoimmune disease that manifests as red, scaly patches on the skin. As a dermatologist, I have encountered numerous patients struggling with the physical and psychological toll of psoriasis.

It’s not your fault! Well, it’s not your brain or heart, but your body may not be producing the hormones that support your sex drive, or your ability to have sex and sexual satisfaction! As men and women enter middle age, your hormone production declines and can leave you feeling not so sexual.

The exact cause of psoriasis remains unclear, but it is believed to be a result of an overactive immune system triggering the rapid growth of skin cells. This leads to the formation of thick, inflamed patches, commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. The impact of psoriasis extends beyond the skin, often causing itching, pain, and a significant emotional burden due to the stigma and misconceptions associated with the visible symptoms.

Declining hormones can be the culprit. Besides messing with your sexual relations, you may notice difficulty sleeping, lack of energy, loss of mental focus and memory, feeling moody, anxious, and depressed. Many people notice weight gain, decreased muscle strength, joint pain and reduced sexual desire and performance. Returning your hormone levels to what they were maybe 10-15 years ago may make you feel and look more like your more vibrant younger self!

One of the most significant challenges in managing psoriasis is the lack of understanding and empathy from the public. It is vital to educate people that psoriasis is not contagious and is not simply a cosmetic issue. It is a systemic disease that requires comprehensive care and support. Individuals living with psoriasis should not face discrimination but instead be met with compassion and acceptance.

A significant part of healthy aging is feeling fit, strong, energic, happy and enjoying the ability to enjoy sexual relations.

So why use Bio-Identical Hormones? Because they allow your body to feel and function as it did maybe 10-15 years ago. Restoring your youthful hormone balance is paramount to feeling and looking your best. Balanced hormones can help you meet the demands of life without turning down the speed-dial.

On top of it all, research has shown that optimizing your hormones with Bio-Identical Hormone pellet therapy is protective to the heart, bones, breasts, brain and relationships!

As a dermatologist, I am dedicated to providing holistic care for my patients with psoriasis. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition and may include topical medications, phototherapy, systemic medications, or biologic agents. It is equally important to address the emotional impact of psoriasis, which can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. Counseling, support groups, and open communication are valuable tools in navigating the challenges of living with psoriasis.

Hormone replacement therapy has been getting a lot of attention lately. Many practitioners go to a week-end course and add BHRT to their practice – without the in-depth knowledge and passion of Carolyn Zaumeyer.

At LowTE Florida® we provide individualized treatment based on your biochemistry and your medical history –grounded in science, not guesswork. For more information, go to: LowTEFlorida.com or call 954-791-4498.

Psoriasis Awareness Month serves as a platform to advocate for greater understanding, support, and access to effective treatments for individuals living with psoriasis. Together we can work to break the stigma, support ongoing research, and promote empathy, respect, and inclusivity for those affected by this condition.

WANT MORE FOOT TRAFFIC? THINK BACKLINKS—AND MAYBE BACKFLIPS

We’re all always looking for ways to drive more people to our storefronts— whether that be a physical address or a website. And while the digital age may have changed how customers find us, one thing hasn’t: like flies to a light, customers follow buzz.

That’s where backlinks —and backflips—come in. Let me explain!

Backlinks bring traffic online. Backflips bring energy in person. Together, they get your business moving in the right direction.

What’s a Backlink—and Why You Want One

Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your business. Think of them as digital referrals, the word of mouth of the internet—the more you get, especially from credible sources, the more Google rewards you with better visibility.

How to build backlinks:

• Partner with local press and bloggers. Reach out when you have news, events, or new offerings.

• Get listed in local directories. Make sure your business is on Google Maps, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and community guides.

• Collaborate with others. Offer to guest post on a partner’s site or cohost a campaign.

These links don’t just boost your SEO—they funnel great leads straight to you proverbial door!

Time to Backflip

A backflip is anything that grabs attention and gets people talking. You want customers saying “Did you see that?”—and telling their friends. A cool party trick to start the buzz is essential.

Backflip-worthy ideas:

• Create an Instagram moment. A great photo wall or branded prop can do wonders.

• Offer surprise perks. Special flash sales, inspiring speakers, and the like.

• Host a can’t-miss event. Think local artist pop-ups, dog adoption days, or mini wellness classes.

When your business feels like an experience, not just a transaction, people come back for more—and bring others.

The best strategy ties your backlinkbuilding to your backflip-moments.

Here’s a roadmap to get you buzzing:

1. Host a community event

2. Invite media or influencers

3. Get featured online

4. Share that content everywhere!

That’s online credibility + real-world energy —and it’s how foot traffic becomes lasting growth. So the next time you’re looking to boost your bottom line, remember: a few great backlinks and one bold backflip can turn curiosity into customers.

Final

You hold several leadership positions across the Cleveland Clinic Florida Market. How do these roles intersect to support your mission in cancer care and research?

In my roles at Cleveland Clinic, I help align vision and strategy by serving as a bridge between our cancer centers in Florida and Ohio, as well as across other specialties. These interconnected roles make it possible to enhance the many aspects of quality care, from staff recruitment and the development of the infusion and wellness centers to growth in key clinical areas and advancing research and education.

As Medical Director of the Maroone Cancer Center, what are some of the most exciting advancements or programs currently underway?

In 2023, I was honored to receive a VeloSano grant, the first time research dollars were used directly to support patient care practices in Florida. VeloSano is a year-round fundraising movement dedicated to raising funds for cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. This support made it possible for us to explore immersive virtual reality as a therapeutic tool for patients undergoing cancer treatment at Cleveland Clinic. I’m especially grateful to Dr. Rafael Arteta-Bulos and our research fellow Maria Heran Montes, whose collaboration and dedication have been so important. Together, this project allowed our patients a chance to momentarily escape to calming places, whether a tropical forest, beach, island or lake house, in hopes of easing their anxiety and making their treatment experience just a little bit better. We’ve also launched an Integrative Oncology program that offers patients with cancer cuttingedge treatments and research, as well as a holistic approach to care, including mental health support, art and fitness therapies, massages and more.

How does community involvement in events like VeloSano and Florida for the Cure impact the progress of cancer research at a local level? Cancer research, and the search for a cure, depends on strong collaborations, often built over decades of hard work. Just as important is the support from community members and organizations who help fund and advocate for research, making it possible to move discoveries from the lab to patients faster. It’s essential to bring people together in a positive, hopeful setting, like Florida for the Cure, where participants can walk, bike or run for a meaningful cause. Seeing camaraderie in action, while breaking a little sweat, is a powerful moment in the journey toward a cure. Every dollar raised and every step taken that day brings us closer to reducing the burden of cancer.

Florida for the Cure is coming up on September 27. What can participants expect from this year’s event at Markham Park? We encourage everyone to begin their journey before Sept. 27 by registering online at Give.VeloSano.org and jumpstarting their fundraising. On event day, you can run, walk, bike or even join us virtually to help make a real difference. It's going to be a powerful and inspiring day, bringing our community together to support a global movement to end cancer. As we head into our second annual VeloSano event in Florida, it’s amazing to see how much has already been accomplished in just two years. This is more than an event – it’s a movement to be proud of!
