Editor’s LETTER Find Your Rhythm

Music has always been an integral part of my life. As a second grader, I would listen to the Jackson 5 single “ABC” on my plastic record player ad nauseam, along with the Osmonds’ “One Bad Apple” and Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World,” among others. I didn’t need bedtime stories, just a radio playing bedside to lull me to sleep.

As my tastes evolved, I moved on to R&B, soul (you couldn’t get me out of the house on Saturday mornings when Soul Train was on), funk, and eventually my greatest love, rock and roll. To this day, nothing energizes me more than an ear-splitting concert where I can get my ya-yas out, and nothing cures my road rage like blasting and wailing along to Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” My long-su ering husband has gamely sat through repeat performances of Bon Jovi, Joan Jett and Def Leppard, despite his penchant for smooth jazz.

Whatever music you love, be it classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, soul, country, reggae, ska, you name it, this is the place for you. South Florida is where cultures blend and genres collide. Music lovers can indulge in whatever they’re in the mood for any day or night of the week, from local legends to up-and-coming talents, in concert halls, beachside amphitheaters, the coolest of bars and the fanciest restaurants. Would it even make sense not to do a Music Issue?

So, this month, we bring you some of the top musical experiences available, even including a sound-healing spa treatment. We introduce you to a super-cool rabbi who counts performing live music among his hobbies. And our cover star, Fort Lauderdale native Tommi Rose, is not only a rising onscreen star but a musician and songwriter (whose dad is in a local rock band). And those are just the highlights.

Warmly,

BEATING CANCER TO THE PUNCH

Haymakers for Hope sets its next bout Haymakers for Hope, the nonpro t organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for cancer research and care, invites South Florida to “knock out” cancer — literally — with its rst charitable boxing event in Miami on March 6 at The Fillmore Miami Beach. For its charitable boxing matches, Haymakers for Hope selects “everyday” individuals from a pool of applicants to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see what they can do in the ring. All participants undergo a rigorous four-month training program with expert USA Boxing-registered trainers, honing their skills and preparing mentally and physically for the big night. The journey culminates in a gala, where participants compete in their rst o cial USA Boxing-sanctioned bout (against an opponent of similar size, age, weight, and skill level) in front of nearly 2,000 supporters. The event also features “Ring Card Warriors,” cancer survivors who take turns holding up ring cards between each round.

“For those who rise to the challenge, they walk away from this experience more con dent, in the best shape of their lives, and with a new community,” says Haymakers for Hope marketing manager Jordan McMillan. “It’s a conscious choice participants get to make. A cancer patient doesn’t get the choice of whether to ght or not. They are diagnosed, and their life is changed forever.” Tickets for the Miami boxing event start at $85. La Vie en Rose

ACTOR, SINGER, SONGWRITER, THE LIST GOES ON: TOMMI ROSE DEFINES VERSATILITY, AND

IT ALL STARTED RIGHT HERE IN FORT LAUDERDALE.

t first, it might be hard to pinpoint exactly where you’ve seen Tommi Rose’s face, prettily framed as it is by blonde strands and anchored with a perfect pout — or where you may have heard her soulful voice, which transcends her young age. A quick scan of her social media accounts and IMDb reveals an impressive and incredibly diverse résumé: from

recent acting roles in binge-worthy Netflix series like Outer Banks and Sweet Magnolias to past and current film roles with major actors to writing original music and screenplays. Or maybe you’ve simply spotted her around Fort Lauderdale, where the young star honed many of the skills that landed her where she is today.

The day I speak with Rose on the phone, she’s on an extended visit with family at her childhood home in East Fort Lauderdale due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, since she splits her time between the two cities. “I’ve shot three films in Florida, so I’ve had the opportunity to spend so much time with my family this past year,” she says. “I still get to come back to the same house I grew up in, and I think I’m lucky for that.”

Like many Fort Lauderdale kids, Rose’s childhood encompassed beach days, walks along Las Olas Boulevard, and devouring towering ice cream cones with friends at Jaxson’s in Dania Beach. But she admits that most of her free time outside of school — she attended Bethany Christian School in Rio Vista and then secured a fine arts scholarship to North Broward Preparatory School, from which she graduated two and a half years early — was spent inside local theater companies, rehearsing and starring in musical productions. Rose’s parents enrolled her at theater camp when she was only 3 years old in the hopes she’d burn off pent-up energy. She was hooked instantly. “I loved theater because it combined everything. I had the chance to act and sing, which

is what I do today,” she says, adding that she gravitated to improv. “I think every kid should have to take improv classes because it forces you to think quickly on your feet.”

Rose credits her father — who’s a member of the Fort Lauderdale rock band Twisted Envy — for exposing her to a variety of music genres from a young age. She recalls their daily car rides to school, when he’d blast everything from Green Day to punk rock and regularly quiz her on music legends. “He would go down the list of all the famous guitar players. He would say their first name, and I’d say their last. So, he would go: ‘Jimi.’ And I’d go, ‘Hendrix.’ It was this game we’d play, and I think I could name like 50 at one point,” she says with a laugh. When the starlet is home in Fort Lauderdale, she’ll jump in to perform with her dad’s band at the Tin Roof or the Hurricane Bar & Lounge in Delray Beach; then, when she’s in Los Angeles, she transitions to belting out sultry jazz at The Velvet Martini Lounge on Sunday evenings. “Right now, I’m really into Ella Fitzgerald,” Rose says, though she quickly admits that her theater days still influence her sound. “Behind any genre that I do, there’s always a little bit of musical theater in there.”

The self-proclaimed musical theater junkie moved into TV and film during middle school, landing her first big lead playing aspiring singer Emma Scott Fitzgerald in the television series In Sanity, Florida alongside the legendary Burt Reynolds. That’s when Rose first realized she didn’t have to choose between singing and acting. She later snagged a regular role as Simone in Nickelodeon’s I Am Frankie, where she also showcased her vocal talents. From there, she’s booked a litany of notable feature film gigs, working with actresses Mira Sorvino and Mena Suvari. And this is set to be a big year for Rose: She stars in three soon-to-be-released movies that were filmed in Florida, including the thriller Lost In The Everglades, in which she plays actress Tori Spelling’s daughter, A Gunfighter’s Deal and Florida Wild, the latter two of which are Westerns. While the subtropical backdrops of Florida may seem an odd location for filming a Western period piece, Rose notes the state’s diversity. “A Gunfighter’s Deal was shot down the street from Florida Wild, which we filmed in Myakka City, and they look completely different,” she says. “Different landscapes, terrain, even the trees look different.”

Florida’s versatility resonates with Rose, who continues to blur the boundaries of singing and acting. When she was 14,

her vocal coach began pushing her to write her own music, and while she didn’t initially think songwriting was for her, Rose currently has seven original singles on all music platforms. “Now, I don’t know how I would live without writing songs,” she notes. When asked if her songwriting style is more dreamy fiction or Taylor Swift-inspired — weaving her personal life and relationships into the lyrics — she jokes that she’s blessed to have a life interesting and exciting enough that she always has something to write about. “My style of songwriting is strangely specific and uniquely personal. Very often, I’ll write a song just for myself, so I can get a feeling on paper, and it’s out-of-my-body-or-brain sort of thing, and my family and friends will be like, ‘No, you have to release that.’” She brings her guitar along to movie sets as a way to bond with coworkers through music and even has a song that will be released on the A Gunfighter’s Deal soundtrack. “I was on set and I was so inspired by the script and by my character, Rose, that I started writing this song. It gives

insight into my character and what it felt like to be her for a week,” she says. The actress sent it to the film’s director, R.J. Hendricks, and, to her surprise, he decided to put the song in the movie’s soundtrack.

Looking ahead, Rose is considering spending time in Nashville to pursue more music and is prioritizing collaborations with artists. “It fills my soul up, whether it’s writing or singing with another artist,” she says. “Music is this way of communicating, not just with words, but with melodies and harmonies.” Listen up: She’s got so much more to say. ■

Your therapist will start you o with a foot massage while you peruse a tablet of playlists that ranges from soothing classical sounds to tropical beats and even upbeat reggae tunes. “These are all specialized sounds that are meant to take spagoers into a deeper state of relaxation,” says Acqualina Spa Director Catherine Davalle. A er selecting the music that speaks to you, slip on headphones and slip away from any outside noise. Live Out Your Musical Theater Dreams

If you secretly belt Broadway smashes in the shower, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts is a place where musical dreams come true. Aspiring singers of all ages can enroll in musical theater classes year-round at the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center. These start with Intro to Musical Theater classes for kids and teens, where students will work on proper vocal production and breath control to build up to singing popular Broadway show tunes. Adults who fantasize about performing in a live musical show can enroll in the 10-week A er Work Players classes during the summer (they take place on Monday nights so attendees can work their day jobs) to learn from the pros how to sing, dance, and act on the big stage. Serenaded ByCrooners

Enveloped in rich woodwork, tu ed velvet booths and moody lighting cast from crystal chandeliers, Anthony’s Runway 84 oozes a sexy supper club vibe that hits all the right notes. Feast on whopping plates of chicken parmigiana and spicy vodka rigatoni while being serenaded by crooners who’ll transport you to another era. “When it comes to modern-day supper clubs, some people have the music, some have the food, or some have the ambiance without the food or music. Runway is the only place in town that has all those components,” says Runway partner Marc Falsetto. The supper club’s nightly entertainment is

curated by the in-house music director, and the five-piece house band “The Takeoffs” is often joined by musical talents from around the country. The evening starts with throwbacks to the ‘50s and ‘60s — think Sinatra and The Rat Pack — and progresses into Motown and Elvis, followed by newer hits later in the night. To guarantee the best seat in the house, table reservations open 45 days in advance. “If you book the main room, there’s no bad seat in the house; everyone can see the music,” advises Falsetto. “Come for dinner, stay for the entire show, and then grab an expresso martini at the bar.” runway84.com

Music On Demand

Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale checks the boxes for dining and shopping — and now, live music. An outpost of the request-based show and bar, Howl at the Moon recently opened on the corner of Las Olas and 6th Avenue. (You’ll know you’ve arrived by the line outside.) Expect a high-energy atmosphere, with people sipping on cocktail buckets, dancing at tables, and singing along to the in-house band that plays nonstop. The talented group of musicians can do it all, trading o to play di erent instruments and lending their vocal talents to belt out a wide range of genres. The audience is encouraged to request their favorite songs —everything from ‘80s rock to ‘90s pop and today’s top hits. While most Howl at the Moon venues operate exclusively from Thursday to Saturday, the Fort Lauderdale location is open six to seven days a week. Of course, it is. howlatthemoon.com/ fort-lauderdale

Reserve Fridays for Music Under the Stars

If the idea of beach breezes and music strikes an appealing chord, gather your lawn chairs and blankets and kick off the weekend at an al fresco concert on the beachfront lawn of the Las Olas Oceanside Park (LOOP) on Fort Lauderdale Beach. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Friday Night Sound Waves , a free concert series that runs from

November to May. These Friday night concerts under the stars feature an eclectic range of music by both local talent and national bands, often paying tribute to pop and rock icons like Green Day, Blondie, No Doubt and Def Leppard. If you show up at 5 p.m., you’ll enjoy pre-concert games along with local artisans and food and drink vendors. theloopflb.com

He’s Got the Spirit

SHAPED BY PASSIONS LIKE MUSIC AND MARTIAL ARTS, RABBI MARK ROSE’S PATH TO SUCCESS HAS BEEN ANYTHING BUT ORTHODOX.

abbi Mark Rose’s path to becoming a rabbi and the Southern Regional Director of NCSY (National Council of Synagogue Youth) has been anything but conventional. The journey that brought him from Calgary, Alberta, to Boca Raton is one of a spiritual awakening as well as personal and professional growth.

Growing up in Calgary, where cowboy hats are more common than yarmulkes, Rose was part of a small, highly assimilated Jewish community. While Judaism was always present in his life, it was more of a cultural reference than a religious pursuit, as was the norm among Calgary’s small, fully integrated Jewish population. His youth was shaped by diverse passions, notably music and martial arts, which continue to inspire him to this day in his current leadership role.

He became a talented guitarist— and still finds time to write and play his music. Rose parlayed his marital arts skills —he earned black belts in three disciplines — into a career competing in martial arts events and running his own studios in Calgary, all by the age of 19.

It was after the death of his father in his mid-20s, which coincided with the birth of his first child, that he began to seek spiritual meaning and looked to his Jewish roots for solace and inspiration. Around the same time, he pulled back from his martial arts commitments and took a job as a flight attendant, allowing him more time to pursue his deepening commitment and explore his new interest by getting involved in Calgary’s Jewish community. Ultimately, this led to Rose’s desire to travel to Israel to become a rabbi and receive his semicha, or official ordination.

“Studying Judaism ignited a love of learning for me,” mused Rose, who admits he wasn’t crazy about school as a child. “Now, I had found the subject that sparked my interest and intellect in ways I hadn’t imagined. I was committed to gleaning as much knowledge as I could, and the year we spent in Israel was a dream come true.”

After Rose received his semicha, the family returned to Calgary, where Rose taught in Jewish day schools and threw himself into community

work. Contemplating a move that would offer a more vibrant Jewish life for his growing family, he jumped at the opportunity to take a position with NSCY (National Council of Synagogue Youth) in Ottawa. After great success in a short time there, the family relocated to the Toronto area in 2018, where Rabbi Rose was directly involved in expanding the organization’s outreach and capabilities.

Through Torah, tradition, and engaging social programs in high schools and community centers, NCSY fosters a strong Jewish identity. The organization also offers retreats, summer programs and trips to Israel, inspiring Jewish teens to become future leaders and advocates for their community. More than ever, NCSY also provides a safe space for Jewish teens to gather amid rising antisemitism.

In 2023, Rabbi Rose, his wife, Devorah, and their seven children (ranging in age from 4 to 23), relocated to Boca Raton, where Rose took on the role of Regional Director South for NCSY. In this role, he oversees the organization’s efforts in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

“More than ever, we are providing support, resources and community for Jewish teens. Our membership has grown dramatically as more teens feel vulnerable to antisemitism, misinformation and confusion and are seeking fellowship and answers,” he says. “We equip them with the tools to navigate the challenges they face — directly, indirectly and online — while providing opportunities to engage and build relationships with their peers and mentors. We are busier than ever, hosting events and sending more teens than ever to Israel. It is a privilege to provide guidance and strengthen our teen community at this crucial stage in their development.”

Despite his leadership responsibilities, Rabbi Rose makes it a priority to engage with the teens directly. Whether attending events, offering mentorship, or simply listening, he remains deeply committed to his mission.

As he continues to inspire the next generation, one thing is clear: Rabbi Mark Rose is not just spearheading an organization—he is shaping the future of Jewish youth, one connection at a time. ■

Come sail away

IF YOU WANT A RELAXING YET EXHILARATING VACATION THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR VIEW OF CRUISING FOREVER, BOOK A VIRGIN VOYAGE. ADDICTION IS GUARANTEED.

raveling, for me, is life’s ultimate luxury.

Cruising, however, has never been my thing. Having sailed with three different cruise lines, I thought my mind was made up and that the rest of my wandering the world would always start in the air.

Eleven days aboard Virgin Voyages’ sleek Resilient Lady changed that mindset. After several friends gushed to me about the experience, I talked my husband — who shared my impression of seaborne travel —into giving it one more shot. (The notion of an adults-only ship, which all Virgin ships are, added to the appeal.) So, we studied the available itineraries and booked passage setting out on a journey that began with a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Puerto Rico and took us through ports of call in Colombia, Curaçao, Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Lucia and St. Maarten.

SETTING SAIL: DEPARTURE FROM SAN JUAN

The journey begins in the heart of Puerto Rico’s bustling capital, San Juan. As you board the Resilient

Lady, you’re immediately struck by the modern and dynamic design of the ship. Gone are the stuffy, traditional cruise interiors of the past, replaced by bold colors, sleek lines, and an atmosphere that feels more like a luxury hotel than a floating city. The ship’s design is infused with Virgin’s signature flair for creativity and fun, and little details everywhere reflect the cheeky British humor that is part and parcel of the Virgin brand (case in point: the onboard ice cream shop called Lick Me Till…).

An energetic vibe permeates the ship even during the boarding process, and there’s a hipness to this cruise line that’s unlike most others. There are no cheesy performances, no formal dress codes, and certainly no buffet lines— in fact, there is no buffet. Instead, the ambience is relaxed, hip, and chill. If you’re part of the exclusive RockStar VIP experience, prepare to be treated like one.

THE ROCKSTAR VIP EXPERIENCE

Those who opt for the RockStar VIP package will discover that the Resilient Lady becomes their playground. From priority boarding to personalized services, RockStar guests enjoy the royal treatment starting before they board, receiving black electronic bracelets as opposed to

red ones that indicate their passenger status. The experience begins with a private check-in, bypassing the usual crowd and heading straight to a luxurious suite appointed with everything from plush bedding to state-of-the-art technology. A tablet allows you to operate the television, lighting system (which offers various ambient lighting choices that change colors to suit your mood and, um, in-room activities), oceanview windows and terraces with seating, and a red macrame hammock.

A RockStar concierge is at your service 24/7. When our air-conditioner didn’t cool as we thought it should, our agent popped up at the door within minutes; a service crew was summoned, and the issue was resolved.

One of the most notable aspects of the RockStar VIP experience is its level of personalization. Your RockStar agent is available to curate every detail of your voyage, from arranging private shore excursions to securing reservations at the most sought-after restaurants on board to ensuring you have the exact firmness of pillows you prefer. But

Located on the top deck of the ship, Richard's Rooftop is exclusive to Rockstar VIP passengers.

perhaps the most iconic perk is access to Richard’s Rooftop, an exclusive VIP area located on the top deck that can only be accessed via a gold magnetic card. With its giant circular upholstered lounging beds and cabanas, a hot tub and cool shower, an extensive menu of light bites and a full bar (all food and drink can be ordered from and delivered to your lounger), it’s tempting, especially during full days at sea, to camp out there the entire day (and we did). The intimate atmosphere extends to the service. After one afternoon spent at Richard’s, we were on a first-name basis with all the bartenders and servers (shout out to Ruffy and Mayvelin), who never allowed a glass to dip lower than halffull before they appeared asking if we’d like a refill. From 5 pm to 6 pm daily, it’s Happy Hour, which entails live music, flowing champagne and free drinks (i.e., they are not deducted from your bar tab). Happy, indeed.

DINING AT SEA: AN EPICUREAN ADVENTURE

The culinary experience aboard Virgin is a major highlight of the trip. Rather than reporting to a central assigned table in the dining room each night, sailors choose from more than 20 restaurants that rise far above the standard cruise ship fare. The focus is on high-quality ingredients, creative menus, and unique concepts that cater to every palate.

The Wake is a sophisticated yet relaxed steak and seafood restaurant with an impressive selection of wine and cocktails. Cozy and intimate, Extra Virgin offers handmade pastas, pizzas, and exceptional wines (it’s one of the most popular spots on the ship, so if you go, be sure to reserve — reservations go fast). The Test Kitchen is perfect for adventurous foodies, as it offers a set tasting menu (wine or cocktail flights can be added for a charge) featuring dishes rivaling those of a Michelin-star establishment. (We went twice; the menu changes every few days.) There are plenty of more

Opposite: The party is ongoing aboard Virgin's fleet of ships, day and night. Above: The Test Kitchen offers a tasting menu of experimental gourmet dishes. Right: Cocktails are always a highlight.

laid-back options as well: Razzle Dazzle offers a colorful and eclectic menu with plant-based dishes and indulgent comfort food, while Gunbae is a Korean barbecue spot where you’ll be sat with fellow sailors, and your server will challenge you in a round of drinking games. If you’re just too worn out to leave your cabin, you can order Ship Eats Delivery to your room through the Virgin app.

Let’s talk about bars. From the ultra-cool The Social Club, a lively spot to enjoy cocktails and people-watching, to the Aquatic Club, a laidback option for imbibing by the pool, there’s no shortage of places to unwind with a drink in hand. (I loved the Sip Club, with its velvet banquettes and demure bar, and bonus: in the afternoons, they serve afternoon tea complete with scones, jam and clotted cream— with or without accompanying bubbly.) For oenophiles, The Wine Cellar is an intimate space to sample wines from around the world, paired with delicious bites that enhance the tasting experience.

ENTERTAINMENT: WORLD-CLASS SHOWS AND ACTIVITIES

One of the most talked-about shows on the Resilient Lady is UNTITLED , combining circus arts, live music, and stunning visuals. It’s a sensory experience that blurs the lines between performance art and traditional theater. Persephone , in my opinion, is also not to be missed, and if you can get reservations to the dinner show Another Rose , do it — not only was the five-course meal fabulous, the show, which is interactive, was highly entertaining and hilarious, a mix of music and mayhem with performers bopping around the room, over the tables and across the stage.

If you’re looking for something a bit more chill, head to The Manor, the ship’s sleek nightclub, where you can enjoy live DJs, dance the night away, or simply relax with a cocktail in hand. The vibe is chic, sophisticated, and never too loud, which makes for the perfect atmosphere for a night of fun.

For those who prefer to take part in activities during the day, there’s no shortage of options. From fitness classes and wellness workshops to cooking demos and art installations, the Resilient Lady offers something for everyone. One standout is The Redemption Spa, where you'll choose from a range of luxurious treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate. Whether you’re opting for a soothing massage or indulging in a rejuvenating facial, the spa is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

PORTS OF CALL: EXOTIC DESTINATIONS

While the experience aboard the Resilient Lady is incredible in its own right, the journey is made even more memorable by the incredible destinations you’ll visit.

Top: Several variations of ambient lighting are available in all cabins. Above: Sip is a sophisticated lounge that specializes in cocktails and offers traditional British afternoon tea. Right: The man behind the brand, Richard Branson.

LITTLE DETAILS EVERYWHERE REFLECT THE CHEEKY BRITISH HUMOR THAT IS PART AND PARCEL OF THE VIRGIN BRAND.

First stop: Cartagena, Colombia. This historic city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its charming colonial architecture and vibrant streets. You’ll have the chance to explore the cobbled lanes of the walled city, visit the famous Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, or simply relax by the beach. Wander freely if you like or book an excursion (there are several to choose from) with a guide who can show you the highlights, including the best stops for shopping for the country’s highly prized emeralds. Interacting with the locals is always a high point of every vacation for me, and the Colombians are warm, friendly and generous.

Next, the Resilient Lady makes its way to Willemstad, Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island known for its colorful colonial buildings and pristine beaches. Stroll along the Handelskade waterfront, visit the nearby Hato Caves, or just flop down on one of Curaçao's idyllic beaches.

The ship then glides to Oranjestad, Aruba, where you can bask in the island’s year-round sun and delicious breezes, explore the striking landscapes of Arikok National Park, or indulge in water sports like snorkeling, kite surfing, and diving. (Tip: Before you go anywhere, hail a taxi, get to Linda’s Dutch Pancakes and indulge.)

In St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, you’ll be greeted by turquoise waters and some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches. Stroll through the bustling markets, explore the island’s rich history, or simply relax by the sea. Finally,

the Resilient Lady makes its way to Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where you can shop for local goods, enjoy beachside cocktails, or take part in water sports like jet skiing, paddle boarding, or sailing.

RETURNING TO SAN JUAN

As our journey wrapped up in San Juan, we were left with a completely different view of cruising (and planning our next one). Virgin Voyages is in a class all its own, having come up with countless ways to set the cruise experience so far apart from most standard cruise lines that one has to sail it to believe it. The recipient of Travel+Leisure’s #1 Mega Cruise Ship Award in 2024 and voted the #1 Best Large Cruise Ship in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, the line has ships in four homeports across the U.S. (including Miami) and proffers an array of itineraries ranging from short jaunts to lengthier sojourns to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Europe, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, among others. Meant to Last

To honor his wife of 25 years, John Heyman is creating a legacy for her that will elevate nursing education and medical mentoring programs in south Florida.

Four years ago, Kathy faced a myriad of health challenges, beginning with diverticulitis, then colon infections and an inflamed liver and, finally, aggressive, inoperable breast cancer. Her many stays at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital ended in late September 2024 when she was discharged to go home under hospice care. She died on October 11.

John is grateful to Kathy’s care team, led by Dana Sands, MD, staff surgeon in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and Director of the Colorectal Physiology Center at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital.

“All the doctors and nurses and everybody else at Cleveland Clinic did everything humanly possible,” says John. “They gave us hope.”

To honor Kathy, John supports educational and career programs at Weston Hospital. He elected to provide ongoing support of the Early Medical Education Mentoring Programs, which Dr. Sands leads, and specifically, he made a significant financial gift to fund nurse training in appreciation of the nurses in the fivetower unit.

“I cannot say enough about all of the doctors and all of the nurses and all of the healthcare professionals at Weston Hospital, especially Dana Sands, who gets heavily invested in her patients,” says John.

“She would – even on days that Kathy wasn’t there for a surgical reason – check on her at night and call me on her way home to let me know how Kathy was doing.”

That’s where Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) comes in to save the day. Unlike treatments that only address surface-level symptoms, BHRT gets to the root of the issue by optimizing hormonal levels at the cellular level. It’s like fixing the foundation of a house before adding the finishing touches.

I know, I know - “hormones” can sound intimidating and to be fair it is a complex topic. But I have seen firsthand, the benefits my patients experience are nothing short of game-changing: More energy and mental clarity, better physical resilience, improved mood and stress management

Melasma is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives, can trigger the overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Sun exposure is also a significant contributor to melasma, as ultraviolet (UV) rays can stimulate the melanocytes in the skin to produce more pigment. In addition to hormonal changes and sun exposure, other factors like heat, certain medications, and skincare products can exacerbate melasma. Psychological stress and a lack of proper skincare routine can also contribute to the worsening of symptoms. My approach to treating melasma involves a combination of professional treatments and at-home care. Topical agents containing ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, and retinoids can help lighten the dark patches. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy are also effective in reducing hyperpigmentation and improving skin’s appearance.

Look, I get it - the wellness world is full of fads and quick fixes these days. But BHRT as a fundamental solution that empowers people to thrive, must remain the foundation on which we build our treatment programs.

And the gravy? Improvements in hormone balance can amplify the effectiveness of other wellness therapies. It’s all about building that solid foundation first.

Prevention is key in managing melasma. I always stress the importance of daily sun protection, including wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing. Developing a consistent skincare regimen with products that are gentle on the skin and do not trigger inflammation is crucial in managing melasma long-term.

At LowTE Florida® we provide individualized treatment based on your biochemistry and your medical history using the proven bioidentical hormone pellets grounded in science, not guesswork. For more information, go to: LowTEFlorida.com or call 954-791-4498.

Melasma is a complex skin condition that requires a personalized approach to treatment. I strive to educate my patients on the causes, triggers, and available treatment options to help them achieve clearer, more even-toned skin. By understanding melasma and implementing preventive measures, individuals can effectively manage this condition and improve their skin health and confidence.

BALANCED HORMONES CREATE A FIRM FOUNDATION

UNDERSTANDING MELASMA: INSIGHTS FROM A DERMATOLOGIST

Melasma is a common skin condition that presents as dark patches on the face, most commonly seen on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. As a dermatologist, I encounter many patients seeking treatment for this condition, which can significantly impact their self-esteem and confidence.

Hormones are the foundation of good health. Think about it - hormones are the body’s chemical messengers, regulating everything from sleep and metabolism to mood and immunity. When this delicate hormonal balance gets thrown off, it can wreak absolute havoc on a person’s overall wellbeing with a cascade of downstream health impacts.

WHAT'S COOKING withBELKYS NEREY

THE WSVN ANCHOR— WHO ALSO HOSTS THE EMMYNOMINATED SHOW “BITE WITH BELKYS” — TAKES A TIMEOUT TO ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS ON FOOD AND DRINK.

What is your idea of the ultimate romantic dinner with your husband — cooking at home or restaurant?

Totally depends on what kind of a week we’ve had. We love restaurant date nights but if it’s been a crazy week we enjoy staying home, heating up some leftovers and cozying up on the couch with a good bottle of wine and a movie.

If you’re cooking, what’s the dish?

Whatever random thing I saw on my Instagram feed that I need to test to see if it’s legit. Half that stuff is nonsense — it looks so great on IG, but it’s a fail in real life. But every once in a while, you strike gold.

How does your heritage play into what you cook and/or eat?

I’m Cuban and he’s Greek. When we host, we always make way too much food. More is more when it comes to sitting down at the table.

What’s your “spot” as a couple to celebrate occasions?

Don’t put me on the spot! Suffice

to say we are blessed to have so many great restaurants in Miami.

How have the two of you influenced each other when it comes to food?

My style is Rachael Ray and he’s more of an Alton Brown. I would say I am prone to spontaneity and winging it and he embraces the chemistry of cooking.

Signature cocktail?

Belkys: Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth over ice with a twist of orange peel he makes for me. Demetri: Manhattan next to a fireplace.

Favorite country to dine around in?

OMG, where to begin? We love Spain, but last year we went to Italy and did some damage. We do serious research before we travel to find some good places and get some reservations.

What’s your motto when it comes to eating/ drinking/indulging? 70% discipline, 30% go wild.
