chairman’s message Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! I hope this year will be as successful as 2018, if not even more. Since relocating to Mooresville in 2005, I have always been impressed by the ability of the South Iredell community to embrace change, growth and the prosperity that follows. We are blessed in this area to have a long legacy of leadership that not only cherishes the past but continues to look forward. This year’s theme for the Chamber is fittingly Legacy of Leadership. 2019 will be a year to focus on leadership and those that have made and continue to make a difference in our community. I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to say that it has been my pleasure to serve on the Board this past year as Steve Midkiff led the Chamber as Board Chair. Steve’s temperament and perspective has provided a fertile environment for the Chamber to continue its successes. Every January we look forward to the Chamber’s signature event, the Annual Business & Community Awards Luncheon and this year will be no different. We are all excited to welcome one of our own Mooresville residents who embodies leadership and comes with his own legacy. Jim Popp, the son of Joe Popp and professional football executive and coach will be our 2019

keynote speaker. Jim has had a storied career in the Canadian Football League, managing players, team personnel and maybe most importantly, winning the big one! Jim has been associated with 5 Grey Cup titles. It is with humility and excitement that I accept the charge as 2019 Board Chair. Together with the 2019 Board and the exceptional Chamber staff I look forward to a year of continued success and the new opportunities that come with living in such a dynamic community. Thanks again for the trust and opportunity that has been extended to me as your 2019 Board Chair. Best wishes, John Wheeler, Chairman MSI Chamber of Commerce

Coach Jim Popp “...Most Successful General Manager In The History Of The Canadian Football League.” treal Alouettes; 2017 with the Toronto Argonauts. Jim Popp is the most successful General Manager in the history of the Canadian Football League. In 2011 he was named Executive of the Year in the country of Canada. He was the youngest General Manager in Professional Sports at one time and the only General Manager in the history of the CFL to have seven straight years of 12 wins or more in a season.

Coach Jim Popp’s hometown is Mooresville. He is a keynote speaker who has five Grey Cup Championships under his belt. James (Jim) Popp is a North Carolina native and is the general manager of the Toronto Argonauts football club of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He has spent the last 27 seasons in the Canadian football league with 24 playoff appearances during this time. His teams have appeared in 19 of the last 24 Division Championships and 11 of the last 24 Grey Cup Game appearances. Popp has won five Grey Cups (1995 with the Baltimore Stallions; 2002, 2009, 2010 with the Mon-

He coached at the NCAA collegiate level for five seasons: The Citadel (198890) under Coach Charlie Taaffe; North Carolina (1987) under Coach Dick Crum; and Michigan State (1986) under Coach George Perles. As a scholarship athlete, he also played college football under Perles as wide receiver and defensive back for three seasons at Michigan State (198385). His position coaches at Michigan State were Coach Nick Saban (multiple national champion head coach at the University of Alabama) and Coach Charlie Baggett. Popp has been recognized as one of the brightest minds in professional sports. He is known for his ability to both build expansion teams and rebuild established franchises into championship organizations as well as the ability to hire, develop

and mentor top executives and coaches that are spread across North America. Fourteen of his former players have been elected to the Canadian Football Hall-ofFame. Jim Popp comes from a hard-working, disciplined and loving family that has deep roots in football thanks to his dad, Joe. The senior Popp was an outstanding athlete during his time. He too became a renowned football coach concluding his distinguished coaching career in 1991 in the National Football league with the Cleveland Browns. Jim’s mother Peggy, at one time ran five businesses. His brother Joey is a multi-talented radio and television personality in Charlotte, NC. His sister Karen is currently a partner with Sidley Austin law firm in Washington, D.C. and a Duke law professor. Put this all together and it looks like this: pro sports, business, media, and law – all good models for a man who has to deal with all five aspects in his job. Popp is married to Kimberly Hamilton Popp. Kim and Jim have six wonderful children, all born in Canada and are dual citizens. The Popp family splits their homes between Toronto and Jim’s hometown of Mooresville, North Carolina, where he also is a member of the Mooresville Sr. High School Sports Hall-of-Fame.
