Welcome to the Festival

Clitheroe is a relaxed rural Lancashire market town surrounded by magnificent countryside. Local people and visitors like our fine shops, pleasant castle grounds, excellent cafes, restaurants & hotels, and splendid performance venues. It’s an ideal place for a jazzy bank holiday weekend!

Festival organisers, Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues (RVJ&B) have pulled together the best programme yet over five action packed days with Stacey Kent, Alan Skidmore, Andy Sheppard, Soweto Kinch and Northern Jazz Orchestra & Georgina Jackson leading the way at The Grand! The Atrium Cafe Bar will be a lively venue with John Ellis, Dread Supreme, Baked a La Ska, Julie Edwards, & Mark Lewis Trio, and there is another Saturday Street Party in Clitheroe’s Castle Street, Rose & Crown’s Blues Stage, village jazz gigs, free gigs on the street, in cafe bars, pubs & clubs, six skills workshops, lively youth jazz and children’s events. Trish Ferrarin - President’s Message Festival President and Workshop Director “Hi and welcome to the 6th Annual Ribble Valley Jazz Festival. I am delighted and honoured to be the Festival President for 2015. I am a piano teacher and jazz music tutor working in Blackburn and Lancashire, predominantly with young musicians. I also support Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues’ big band project, Ribble Valley Jazz Collective, and tutor regular Improvisation Workshops.

So I am familiar with all the great work undertaken by Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues, Lancashire’s Premier Jazz Hub. Over May Day Bank Holiday weekend we’ve got everything from Stacey Kent to Soweto Kinch, street festivals, workshops, local talent, student bands, community bands… which of means there will be a celebration of excellent music throughout the weekend with excellent choice of styles and venues, and frequent chances to dine in comfort at one of many fine eating places.

The Asaf Sirkis/Sylwia Bialas International Quartet is a Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues prefestival warm-up gig. The band brings contemporary electro-acoustic collaboration between Asaf (Lighthouse Trio), and Polish vocalist, Sylvia Bialas. Expect soulful melodies, atmospheric sounds with strong grooves, utilising some uncommon jazz instruments!

Influences range from contemporary, classical, Polish folk, South Indian and Middle Eastern sources - ballads to high energy electric delivery. An excellent and popular gig at the Atrium Cafe Bar. The band will showcase their new album, “Dreams, Dreams.”

Arun Ghosh appears at The Grand as part of Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues pre-festival warm-up programme. Conceived in Kolcata (Calcutta), bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester, and now living in London, Ghosh’s musical style represents his rich cultural heritage. The clarinetist and composer, who will bring a healthy dose of Rock’n’Roll spirit, is a leading light in UK jazz.

He was awarded ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year’ at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2014.

This Festival opening special brings a unique blend of youth & experience with BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2014, Alexander Bone, bringing his Chetham’s College inspired trio for the opening session and popular local jazz legend Eric Ainsworth and guests Lyn Fairbanks and Dean Masser taking prime spot - an exciting gig for both bands, especially when they team-up for a couple of end-of-session tunes!

Eric and his guest will play popular jazz standards to an experienced Lunchtime Live audience, eagerly anticipating release of his debut CD. The Alexander Bone Trio, also known as Jam Experiment, are becoming festival favourites, having appeared at Marsden and Lancaster Jazz Festivals in 2014. Contemporaries of Chetham’s School of Music, they will continue studies in London at music conservatoires in autumn 2015.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the iconic album “A Love Supreme”, the Ribble Valley Jazz Festival is proud to present the highly regarded British saxophonist Alan Skidmore.

Alan is joined by a terrific line-up including Pete King, Steve Melling & Andy Cleydhert to pay homage to drummer Elvin Jones and the genuine legend of jazz, John Coltrane. The focus is on Elvin, but the music is very much Coltrane’s. This gig is an excellent mainstream jazz introduction to our festival, bringing top UK jazz figures who play gigs all over UK and Europe.

Expect a mixture of standards but with some original compositions.

A Dread Supreme Line-up: Richard Ormrod - saxophones, Sam Hobbs - drums, Trevor Roots - vocals, Simon Beddoe - trumpet, Chris Campbell - guitar, Bob Birch - keyboards, Kenneth Higgins - bass, Spear / percussion, Supa - sound engineer.

A Dread Supreme is a 7-piece ensemble with strong roots in Jamaican music and jazz. It commits to breaking down musical barriers, doing this with a massive band comprising horns, drums, percussion, bass, keyboard, guitar & vocals. It will bring an amazing sound to the Atrium, thanks to Jazz North’s Northernline showcase. Expect some Coltrane! Garforth Arts Festival said ‘This is a real band, the music is exciting, interesting, varied, uplifting and positive.’ This gig will pack the Atrium!

Dave Smith is a very experienced musician having worked for Roland, the piano and keyboard specialists, in Japan. His keyboard which he built himself not only looks like a Hammond, it sounds like one. The sound can be likened to Jimmy Smith meets JJ Johnson. Dave will be accompanied by Eddie Taylor on trombone, and they are working on a version of Nessum Dorma! A Spread Eagle Dinner Jazz session, so book early for a table on: 01200 441202.

The Cheating Hearts are a Lancashire based five piece band of experienced musicians. It begins with the arrival in Clitheroe of the Jazz Train from Manchester! On board will be a jazz band. On arrival in Clitheroe they’ll process into the town centre. Castle Street will be closed to traffic for a full day of festival events with live music in the main marquee, and stalls and activities along the street. In the bars and cafés there will be live music from stomping jazz to rocking blues. There’ll be buskers, face-painting, food stalls, balloons with special stalls from local traders, including Cheesie Tchaikovsky’s bread stall and Rose & Crown’s Hog Roast. And special tasters to be savoured in Cowman’s Famous Sausage Shop.

Clitheroe’s main street will thrive on Saturday Street Jazz Festival Day with lively local bands playing a range of jazzy styles from 11am to 5pm. Two marquees on either side of Castle Street will host 6 bands throughout the day. Two bands feature young musicians from local schools and community groups. They are supported by three bands with vast experience presenting street music.

11am - 12pm Clitheroe Royal Grammar School - An experienced school swing band that has produced several CDs and played abroad under the leadership of Nigel Spooner.

12pm to 1pm - Batala, a form of Samba Drum music, originates in North Eastern Brazil. Batala Lancaster is a community samba reggae drumming band presently based at Ellel Village Hall, south of Lancaster University campus.

1pm - 2pm Red Hippo play a stunning mix of sousaphone, Irish whistles, saxophones and strings. Their musical world is influenced by traditional folk music with jazz influenced arrangements having paid their dues to the worlds of jazz, folk, world music and ska. Be prepared for some “posh jazz chords”.

2pm to 3pm Beltones - An ensemble comprising 4 saxophones, baritone horn and drummer, playing jazz numbers from early blues, through ragtime, big band and more modern. Their repertoire draws on jazz, Keizmer, show tunes, film scores, and classical works.

3pm to 4pm Marmaduke Schnitzel - Comprises seven experienced young musicians who are students of jazz with music tutor and festival President, Trish Ferrarin, making their second festival appearance.

4pm to 5pm Bassa Bassa - A jazz dance legend, this Leeds-based big band has played WOMAD and Glastonbury. Strong jazz foundations blend with blasts of Ska, Latin, African and funk. It has a colourful and energetic stage presence of musicians who are obviously enjoying themselves.

Eric Ainsworth, a Lancashire & North West jazz legend has played in most jazz venues with many well known musicians. Resident at The Grand’s Lunchtime Live, usually last Friday monthly, Eric plays regularly at the Spread Eagle Sawley, and Bayley Arms Hurst Green. Come to Clitheroe Library to listen to Eric’s jazz piano and interesting stories about his life in jazz spanning 60 years. You’ll be able to get a copy of his debut CD too, to be launched at the festival’s Lunchtime Live Friday Jazz gig.

Paula and Gill make their festival debut performing their arrangements of of some popular Jazz, Blues & Folk songs for Clitheroe library visitors. You can sit in reception area for a few minutes. “I Have a Duck Who Can Roar!” is a production especially attractive to children, but definitely accessible to all ages! It’s a totally new production, words and music by Chris Bridges, illustrations by Ann Gilligan of Green Monster Arts. Characters will be introduced through distinctive musical themes by the Living Story Music Ensemble. The production, commissioned for 2014 Marsden Jazz Festival and played to two sell-out audiences, in a programme lasting just under an hour. Baked A La Ska are the “heavy, heavy sound” of Manchester Ska - an 11 piece band of oddballs & pranksters brought together by keyboardist & wizard, John Ellis. Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues is one of the most exciting and progressive music and arts organisations which priorities increasing participation in jazz and blues for both audiences and musicians, and expecially for young people, all year round!
