2017 Festival Band-in-Residence:

Jam Experiment

This year, it is our great pleasure to have a group of outstanding young musicians, Jam Experiment, as our first ever band-in-residence. Jam Experiment are a young jazz quintet now based in London, originally coming together at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, now studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. They won the 2014 Jazz North Introduces Scheme, shortly after their debut gig supporting Liane Carroll. They have played at leading jazz festivals across the UK, leaving audiences in awe.

The line-up includes the winner of the inaugural BBC Young Musician Jazz Award (2014), saxophonist Alexander Bone, with Rory Ingham on trombone, Toby Comeau playing keyboards & piano, bassist Joe Lee and drummer Jonathan Mansfield. No less than Alan Barnes said this was “one of the best young bands...a band that swings, has great arrangements and knows how to present itself. A really refreshing presence on the scene.” This is what the band have to say: “We (Jam Experiment) are incredibly excited to be the resident band at the 2017 Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Festival! The festival will be featuring a fantastic selection of artists and events. We will be coming with music from our brand new debut album. We’ll be showcasing this on Friday lunchtime. On Saturday, we’ll be giving a seminar in the morning, collaborating with local up-and-coming musicians from Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra in the afternoon, and running a late night jam session. We culminate the residency with a masterclass on improvisation, held on the International Jazz Day. We are so eagerly anticipating our residency, which will be a weekend filled with live playing, educating, and collaborating. We hope you can join us!” We also hope you can join Jam Experiment and the team at Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues for what promises to be a great 5-day Festival of top-quality live music and events. See you then!

A 30,000 year old flute found in Germany in 2008 would have played a pentatonic scale, showing that humans have had this music for longer than we have had writing, communal living, and agriculture. The Prehistoric Jazz Quintet is a group of well-established young jazz musicians, led by composer and pianist Misha Gray, whose original compositions explore these origins of music. Their style relies heavily on the musicians’ spontaneity and improvising skills, and the result is a lively combination of intense, intriguing and unique textures. Expect tracks from their new album, “Origin of the Species”. “(Misha Gray) has elements of the instrospection of a Bill Evans but is able to meld that with a seamless dynamic fire that reminded me of McCoy Tyner”. Having appeared at Gt British R & B Festival, Colne, won a Radio Lancashire songwriting competion for schools, and being a regular at Homes Mill Jazz Jams, she will be a popular feature at the Emporium in partnership with pianists, Trish Ferrarin and John Fuller. Expect some fine songs of her own as well as as some popular jazz standards.

Get The Blessing Date: Thursday 27 April, Doors 7:00pm, Stage 7:45pm to 10:30pm | Venue: The Grand | Tickets: Advance: £15 / £14 Members / £7.50 U16s | Line-up: Jake McMurchie - saxophone and electronics, Pete Judge - trumpet / flugel horn / piano / electronics, Jim Barr - bass / electronics / organ, Clive Deamer - drums / percussion

Julie Edwards and Kevin Dearden + Ed Barnwell Date: Thursday 27 April, 8:00pm to 10:00pm | Venue: Aspinall Arms | Tickets: FREE EVENT but table booking advisable. | Line-up: Julie Edwards - vocals, Kevin Dearden - bass guitar, Ed Barnwell - electric piano For the third year running we welcome vocalist Julie Edwards and guitarist Kevin Dearden, an experienced and popular jazz duo who have entertained previous Festival audiences with their fine interpretations of jazz and pop standards. You will also be able to enjoy the passionate piano playing of Ed Barnwell, who balances poised classical moods with effusive, rolling passages.

Get the Blessing wears its jazz credentials lightly but defiantly. They described themselves as “total outsiders” and “the punk entry” when they won the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with “All Is Yes”. Four critically-acclaimed albums down the line, the same could still be said to hold true, albeit with a little more wisdom at their disposal. Their latest release “Astronautilus” is dedicated to the memory of legendary saxophone player Ornette Coleman, who passed away in June 2015. Coleman’s early work was pivotal to the band’s formation in 2000 and continues to inspire their boldly monophonic instrumentation. Get The Blessing also retain their original line-up, with the rock-solid rhythm section of Portishead duo Jim Barr and Clive Deamer supporting the sax/trumpet front line of Jake McMurchie and Pete Judge. That they can still produce such creative and intelligent music - all balanced with wit and passion - as well as find time to work on other projects, is testament to the free spirit that they embody. “...may well be the most original and exciting band on the British scene at the moment.” Jazzwise Magazine 12

Jazz Jamaica Date: Friday 28 April, Doors 7:00pm, Stage 8:00pm to 10:30pm | Venue: The Grand | Tickets: Advance: £21 / £20 members / £10 U16s | Line-up: Gary Crosby - double bass, Denys Baptiste - tenor saxophone, Camilla George - alto saxophone, Mark Crown - trumpet, Harry Brown - trombone, Ben Burrell - piano, Shirley Tetteh - guitar, Pete Eckford - percussion, Rod Youngs - drums. A big band with a difference! Britain’s favourite ‘skazz’ (Ska/Jazz) band is the brain-child of original Jazz Warrior and veteran jazz double bassist, Gary Crosby. Powered by the rhythms of traditional Jamaican music (mento, ska, reggae) and the improvisational freedom of jazz, Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as “one of the UK’s leading good-time bands” (The Independent) from their exuberant live performances over the past 20 years. You don’t need to know about jazz to enjoy an evening with this all-star band - the music is infectious - they will have you dancing in the aisles! Don’t take our word for it – see what the papers say: “Breathtaking stuff. Britain has its own rival to the Buena Vista Social Club.” The Guardian “Jazz Jamaica would see off Jools Holland’s more famous Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.” The Times “Grooves from start to finish and is a completely successful amalgamation of Caribbean rhythms and the big band tradition.” Jazz UK Website: www.garycrosbybass.com/jazzjamaica/

Theo Travis - sax/flute/keyboard, formerly of Gong and The Tangent, joined Soft Machine Legacy in 2006. “Soft Machine Legacy is not a tribute project or an attempt to recreate the music of the 1970s. The music here is fresh, risky, and full of life. If 2013 CD, Burden of Proof proves anything, it’s that the spirit of exploration in music remains alive and well. Fittingly so, because that’s what Soft Machine was all about in the first place.” Dave Wayne, All About Jazz www.johnetheridge.com/softmachinelegacy/ Guitar legend Gary Boyle supports Soft Machine. Gary founded the legendary jazz-fusion band Isotope in 1973. In the late 70s, he was voted “New Star” in the Melody Maker poll.
