Welcome, September! As harvest season begins to unfold, we are surrounded by the vibrant colors and abundant yields that signify a time of celebration and gratitude. This season of reaping is not only about the fruits of the land but also about reflecting on the hard work and dedication that has shaped our community.

Since its establishment in 1924, our Chamber has been dedicated to nurturing and advocating for local businesses. Just as the harvest represents a time of culmination and achievement, our centennial is a testament to a century of unwavering support and commitment to the business community. We’ve navigated dramatic changes—from shifts in economic trends to advances in technology—but our core mission has remained steadfast: to support and promote local commerce.

As we welcome this new season, we are deeply appreciative of our long-standing members. We are proud and fortunate to have over one hundred members who have invested in our work over 25 years. Their loyalty and dedication have been instrumental in sustaining the strength and impact of the Chamber. Their continued support reflects a deep-rooted commitment to our shared mission and to the prosperity of our local businesses.

Equally important, we welcome and celebrate our new members, whose fresh perspectives and innovative ideas bring renewed energy and opportunity to our Chamber. Their involvement signifies growth and adaptation, ensuring that we continue to evolve and address the ever-changing needs of our business community.

Also, in this season, we are turning our attention to the future. As elections approach, it is akin to planting new seeds for the future of our community. The Chamber will continue a long-standing commitment to host local Candidate Forums, offering a platform for voters to hear from those running for office.

Just as farmers plant seeds to cultivate a successful future harvest, these forums will help our community make informed decisions that will shape the direction of our local governance. As we revel in the harvest and our centennial milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting local businesses and fostering community growth. Here’s to celebrating our past, embracing the present, and looking forward to a prosperous future.

In this new segment we will share the continued momentum and meaningful engagements our Chamber has maintained, as well as the promising endeavors that lie ahead through the following “Reviews and Previews”...

Reviews:

• Main Street: Chamber Staff has identified opportunities to advance strategic partnerships and foster economic development through Main Street. We have participated in a Main Street Steering Committee and congratulate the group for being recognized as a Connected Community and look forward to the opportunities Main Street may bring to Grants Pass.

• Lemonade Day: The impacts of the Lemonade Day event which drew in over 300 young entrepreneurs continued throughout the month. We celebrated the success of the new businesses at a fun party and several of the kids were able to review their learning and experiences at both a County Commissioners meeting as well as at a Collaborative Economic Development Committee meeting.

• Young Professionals Network: Our Young Professionals Network took the opportunity to forward their careers and learning with a professional development day at Rogue Community College. Lisa Parks, Dean of Business & Workforce Development reviewed trades and certification programs the college offers.

• Advocacy: As one of the most important functions of your Chamber, our team is always working to be the voice of businesses through our work with community partners. We participated in ongoing conversations with the Public Safety Funding Workgroup. We stayed engaged on the decisions after the Supreme Court ruling and the impacts it would have on options for the unhoused. We continue to meet with elected leaders, candidates, city staff, strategic partners and our membership to foster a business environment for business retention and growth.

Previews:

• Peerspective: In response to our business survey, which identifies strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for businesses, we will be hosting a PEERSPECTIVES panel to address one of the needs identified in the survey. Join us September 10th as we take the opportunity to learn from local experts about the impact of childcare on our workforce. Learn what opportunities and resources are available and how we can have an impact on solving the challenge.

• Board of Directors Succession Planning: With the end of the year in sight, our Board of Directors, as well as several of our committees, are planning for the evolution of Board leadership in executive roles, as well as recruitment of new Board and committee members. If you are interested in joining the Chamber Board or one of our influential committees, please reach out.

• Candidate Forums: We will host in-person candidate forums for the Mayor & Council races as well as Commissioner races. We will also host televised discussions with State candidates. This forum represents a crucial opportunity for our community to engage directly with candidates who are vying for a role in shaping the future of Josephine County. It is through such forums that the voting public can gain a deeper understanding of each candidate’s vision, goals, and values. Council & Mayor candidate forum will be October 15th with County Commissioners on October 17th.

• Ambassadors: Our Chamber Ambassadors are gearing up for the annual Ambassador Conference which will be held in Lebanon, OR this year. Ambassadors play a vital role in the Chamber by helping promote the Chamber, welcoming new members, and making Chamber events successful and enjoyable for everyone.

• Volunteer Recruitment: Our Visitors Center is recruiting volunteers who are interested in working one 4 hour shift per week. Visitor Center volunteers help welcome guests, connect them with local businesses and attractions as well as highlight the wonderful offerings throughout Southern Oregon. If you interested in this fun opportunity contact Shirley Liska at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center

• Open Office Hours: Open office hours continue this month. Terry Hopkins, our Persident & CEO will be hosting open office hours every Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. We encourage you to drop by, share your successes, discuss any challenges, and explore how we can work together to advance your business and our community. No appointment needed, just drop in and say hello.

Thank you for your unwavering support and active participation. Together, we are building a thriving and vibrant Grants Pass. ~ Terry H.

For the month of August. Our Young Professionals hosted two events, the quarterly Adopt-a-Street trash cleanup and Professional Development with RCC on Trades & Certificates. With the heat and many taking those last minute vacations before school starts, attendance to both events was a little less than normal but those smaller crowds created a more intimate setting, allowing for some engaging conversations.

While discussing the many facets of Rogue Community College with the Dean of Business & Workforce Development, Lisa Parks, it was interesting to learn that Healthcare is the top local industry. They offer many courses to support healthcare careers but also offer several trade apprenticeships. The need for these trades keeps growing. Another great program is the “Early College” program- which allows youth to start earning credits while still in high school.

It was a nice treat for RCC’s President, Randy Weber, Ed.D. to join our conversation. He mentioned RCC is always listening to the needs of the community and takes note of areas in which there is a lack of skillsets in the workforce then strives to tailor curriculum to support those needs. He stressed the importance of growing your staff, investing in their skillsets in efforts of promoting within. It was also mentioned that childcare is a critical point and to support the need for daycares, they have a grant program available for in-home care providers.

To be a part of the conversation on the matter of childcare, be sure to register for the BR & E Committee’s PEERSPECTIVES event on September 10th. Shout out to the Daydream Café for serving us a delicious lunch! In September, we will be hosting our Monthly Luncheon featuring Tina Gotchall.
