As we step into a season of growth, I’ve been inspired by the story of Tupelo, Mississippi— a once-struggling town that became a national model for community and economic revitalization. Known as the “Tupelo Model,” their approach centered on empowering local leadership, investing in education, and fostering strong collaboration between business, government, and civic groups.

Tupelo’s success came from uniting public and private sectors under a shared vision. By developing local leaders, diversifying their economy, and making strategic, community-led investments, they created lasting prosperity. What’s most compelling is that the work we’re doing here in Josephine County mirrors many of these same principles.

At the Chamber, our mission is deeply rooted in this kind of collaborative development. This month alone highlights that commitment:

• Concerts in the Park returns to Riverside Park, bringing families, neighbors, and local musicians together at the heart of our community.

• Wine Stroll held in Historic Downtown will draw hundreds to shop local and celebrate the best of Southern Oregon’s wine and charm.

• Lemonade Day on August 9 will empower over 300 young entrepreneurs to launch their first businesses, learning critical skills that shape future leaders.

These events do more than entertain—they create connections, spark opportunity, and build pride in our region. The Tupelo Model reminds us that strong communities aren’t built overnight, but through steady, intentional investment in people and place.

Thank you for being part of that vision.

In Memory of Karen Henningsen

Terry Hopkins President & CEO, Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce

541-956-4100 • thopkins@grantspasschamber.org

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Karen Henningsen, our accounting contractor, who unexpectedly passed away in April.

Karen had worked with the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce since 2021 and quickly became more than just the person balancing our books— she became part of our Chamber family. The relationships we build within these walls are not just professional; they’re personal. We work closely, we support each other through the ups and downs, and we celebrate the milestones, both big and small. Karen was someone we relied on—steadfast and trustworthy.

Anyone who has worked in a busy office knows the value of a good accountant. Karen kept us on track, gently wrangled our receipts, reined in our budgeting chaos, navigated changing leadership in the Chamber and made sure we knew that “miscellaneous” was not a valid line item—no matter how creative we tried to be. Her commitment, candor, and sharp eye made her not only a trusted professional but a joy to work with.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Karen’s family and loved ones. She will be dearly missed by all of us here at the Chamber and by the many local businesses she supported with diligence and care.

In honoring Karen, we are reminded that the work we do is only as meaningful as the people we do it with. And Karen made our work—and our lives—better. ~Rest in peace, Karen. You will not be forgotten.

Kate Lasky-Voted Library Director of the Year

Grants Pass, April 25, 2025 — The Oregon Library Association (OLA) honored Josephine Community Library Director Kate Lasky as its 2025 Librarian of the Year today at the awards banquet which culminated its annual conference in Eugene. Helping to present the award to Lasky was Curry Public Library Director Jeremy Skinner, who was instrumental in Lasky’s nomination for the honor and has served with Lasky on OLA statewide committees. In his nomination letter of support, Skinner said, “For many librarians in Oregon, Kate Lasky is a caring friend, a cheerleader, and an inspiration. It is not clear how she makes time for all of this, but she is the first person to reach out and offer encouragement when she learns any of us are in need. She is a role model, demonstrating the impact that one individual can have when they are deeply committed to both personal and professional development in the service of others.”

Latitude Wine Tours

Southern Oregon’s boutique wine tour experience

Owner of Latitude Wine Tours, Faith Lemire-Baeten, grew up in California wine country, where her parents instilled in her a love for supporting and drinking local wine. After moving to Southern California for her engineering degree, she missed the rolling hills of vines and promised herself she'd return to wine country one day. After completing her degree and working in manufacturing for four years, Faith moved to Southern Oregon with her fiancé, where the vineyards beckoned once again. After a little deliberation, she joined a local tasting room team and never looked back.

Today, with experience as a tasting room manager for an internationally distributed winery and as an award-winning wine director, Faith takes an accessible, educational, and entertaining approach to wine. She has her WSET III with Merit, as well as four years of both local and international wine experience. Faith takes wine seriously, without the snobbery.

Faith started Latitude Wine Tours to share her love of Rogue Valley wine country with locals and tourists, explorers and connoisseurs alike. She offers private, five-hour tours to three unique wineries, curated to match each group's specific interests and tastes. These tours are more than just a simple driving service; Faith goes above and beyond to ensure a personalized, engaging, and educational experience. Tours start at just $150 per person, which includes transportation, engaging education, and tasting fees. Guests are transported in our well-equipped 2025 Hybrid SUV, suitable for groups of 2-7 adults.

Whether you are a casual wine explorer or a seasoned connoisseur, Latitude Wine Tours is designed for wine enthusiasts of all levels. We sweat the small stuff so you don't have to. Let us curate your perfect day out in wine country!

A Band of Brothers

A Band of Brothers This Band was established in 2021 with the hope to bring great music to good people and foster an environment of good times and fellowship wherever our sound leads them. Their eclectic set of oldies and classical hits with a little Southern Oregonian flair is sure to bring you to your feet and make you sing along.

The Jack Maybe Project This group was born from the fog-draped forests of the Pacific Northwest, where a wandering monster named Jack Maybe roamed—heavy-hearted and searching—for others who knew the weight of inner demons. He found them in a band of kindred souls: horns that wail like ghosts, drums that thunder like anxiety’s pulse, banjo strings that twist like doubt, and a guitar that hums with fleeting hope. Together, they craft raw folk and blues meant to call those demons by name, dragging them from the shadows into the firelight. Their music is both a reckoning and a release—haunted, honest, and human. The Jack Maybe Project now travels town to town, blurring the line between myth and melody, offering songs for those still finding their way.

The KOZ Band

The Koz Band is a professional 5-piece band based out of Eugene, Oregon. Specializing in 70’s, 80’s and 90’s Rock. Playing music from an epic era and covering iconic bands like Rush, Journey, Van Halen, Foreigner, Styx, Loverboy, and more, performing the songs you remember the way you remember them.

The Lack Family In 2008

The Lack Family sold everything to hit the road, leaving behind their home and family. 16 years later they have been to 29 countries and all 50 states, with hundreds of amazing stories, and 16 original albums! They say, “The adventure is saying yes when you’re not sure how it’s going to come together!” They travel all over the world to bring a message of hope. Whether you are rocking out with them or being swept away in harmonies, you are sure to have an experience!

July 8th The Lack Family

TOBAGO BREEZE With their unique style deemed Yacht Rock & Soul, they are an increasingly popular professional entertainment act based in Southern Oregon. This polished high energy female fronted group includes members who have appeared and recorded with major headliners in multiple genres.

With a global social media following of almost 50K followers, at concerts, audiences enthusiastically sing and dance to favorite nostalgic radio hits from the 70’s -80s. You’ll recognize songs originally performed by America, Anita Baker, Bob Marley, Carol King, Christopher Cross, Crusaders, Donald Fagan, EWF, Gino Vannelli, Maria Muldaur, Michael Jackson, Nicolette Larson, Pablo Cruise and many other legendary artists.

Lemonade Day Returns August 9th

Growing Young Entrepreneurs and a Stronger Community •••Registration OPEN••• http://LemonadeDay.org/grants-pass

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the 5th annual Lemonade Day, taking place this year on August 9th. What started as a national youth entrepreneurship program has become one of our most impactful community-building events—combining hands-on learning, small business education, and pure summertime joy.

This year, over 300 young entrepreneurs will set up lemonade stands throughout our community, but what may look like a simple refreshment stand is actually the culmination of months of preparation and learning. Participating youth have followed a robust curriculum that teaches real-world business skills: developing a product, writing a business plan, securing a location, managing money, marketing creatively, and giving back to their community.

Lemonade Day checks all the boxes of the Chamber’s mission: it inspires entrepreneurship, strengthens our community, and develops tomorrow’s workforce. These young participants are not just learning how to sell lemonade—they’re learning how to think critically, solve problems, deliver great customer service, and dream big. Along the way, they are guided by local mentors and supported by generous sponsors who believe in investing in our youth.

This initiative would not be possible without our incredible partners. Northwest Community Credit Union returns as our Title Sponsor, and our Community Sponsors—YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of the Rogue Valley, and Josephine Community Library—play a vital role in outreach and education.

On August 9th, we invite you to join us in celebrating these incredible young minds. Stop by a stand, buy a cup, and invest in the future of Grants Pass—one glass of lemonade at a time.

Legislative Update: Protecting Business Interests

The Oregon Legislature is moving into a critical phase as final committee deadlines have passed and attention now shifts to floor votes. As of April 9, top concerns for employers include SB 916, allowing unemployment benefits for striking workers, and HB 2548 and HB 3838, which propose new “Standards Boards” to regulate wages and employment conditions by industry—setting a dangerous precedent. SB 174 could raise insurance costs by expanding ‘Bad Faith’ lawsuits, and SB 426 would unfairly hold property owners liable for unpaid subcontractor wages, discouraging new construction.

Other employer-impacting bills still alive include mandated job posting requirements (HB 2746) and the elimination of the 90-day notice-to-sue protection (HB 2957).

Meanwhile, proposals to impose new alcohol taxes (HB 3197, HB 3940) and to divert Transient Lodging Tax revenues from tourism promotion (HB 3962) could negatively impact vital industries in our region.

In mid-May, legislature must complete floor votes in the first chamber and transfer bills to the opposite chamber for further action. Final adjournment (sine die) is scheduled for June 30.

We will continue to advocate vigorously for a strong business climate and keep you informed as the session progresses.

What’s new for 2025?

This year, we are launching an exclusive weekday Buffet Brunch from May through June 4th. Adult prices start at $59.95 and the excursion is just like our standard Brunch with a 4-Hr., 36-Mi. round trip adventure through the Hellgate Canyon. However, when you stop at the Hellgate River Lodge Restaurant for Brunch, you have a full open buffet rather than a family-style service.

Our Young Professionals Network (YPN) had an amazing turnout for our April Monthly Luncheon, hosted at the vibrant an innovative meeting space at RE/MAX Integrity. We were honored to have Dana Pearce and James Conway with the City of Grants Economic Development Department as our speakers. They did a great job explaining their role in the business sector and in the community. They both did a little dive into their personal backgrounds and what led them to their current roles. Dana’s journey began in social work and then business ownership, her need to do more for the community made this position an ideal fit. James, with a history in customer service, his passion is fostering trust and strong relationships between government and business owners; this skillset plays a vital role in the engagement of a thriving downtown.

The purpose of Economic Development is to create a healthy and diverse economic base and relies on dedicated community partners such as Visit Grants Pass, Main Street Grants Pass, Rogue Workforce PARTNERSHIP, IVCanDo, SOREDI and the Chamber to make this region a great place to live and do business.

The presentation also identified the different resources for capital improvement projects such as grants and loans. We also learned about the Urban Renewal Plan which helps specific areas in the city that are poorly developed or underdeveloped. Other resources mentioned were the Small Business Tool Kit which is a roadmap to starting, building, managing and growing your business. This and more information can be found at www.grantspassoregon.gov
