THE WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL The Washington National Cathedral is located at Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues in Washington, D.C. The sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the United States, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of the cathedral began in 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was completed in 1990, when the finial was placed in the presence of President George H.W. Bush. State funerals for two American Presidents, Dwight David Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan, were conducted here, as was a memorial service for President Harry Truman.
