DeMolay for the Young or Young at Heart

The members of Tenleytown—Chevy Chase Chapter, Order of DeMolay, held their semi-annual installation of officers on September 25, 2005. The event was held at the Singleton Masonic Hall, and the Chapter was pleased to have in attendance the Grand Master of Masons in the District of Columbia, the Deputy Grand Master, the Grand Secretary, and the Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. The Grand Lodge officers did not come empty handed; they brought a sizeable contribution to assist Nation’s Capital DeMolay. Such a collection of Masonic support of DeMolay in the District of Columbia is unprecedented in recent years.

Nation’s Capital DeMolay has enjoyed a particularly good year. The two DeMolay chapters in DC are sponsored by Singleton-Hope-Lebanon Lodge No. 7 and HiramTakoma Lodge No. 10. Members from these chapters have, for example: competed in ceremonial contests in Dallas and Albany to hone their ritual skills; worked side Kurt Hamrock, Executive Officer Nation’s Capital DeMolay

by side with the Masons to hand out hot dogs at the Palisades Park on July 4; volunteered to work with the athletes at the local Special Olympics; traveled to Orlando to attend the DeMolay International convention; and organized lots of fun activities such as lasertag, go-karting, video game tournaments, and paintball outings.

These successful activities likely will result in positive membership growth for Nation’s Capital DeMolay in 2005, just as it grew in total membership in 2004. This growth is particularly impressive, because young men only remain “active” DeMolays until they turn 21. After that, they become “Senior” DeMolays and no longer appear on a chapter’s membership roster. So, positive growth means that the chapters are bringing in more new members each year than they are losing when the members turn 21.
