CARIASO LEADS HER TEAM TO SUCCESS
ASales is often a male-dominated field, but in hotel sales, it’s usually the ones in heels who take the lead

fter an immersion in thirteen departments during her on-the-job stint in a hotel, it took Cay Cariaso only three days to fall in love with Sales. “It was the calls,” she began, the glint in her eye evident as she looked back. “It was the calls, the blitzes, meeting with travel agents, and knowing that you sealed the deal.”
Cay could easily focus on her climb up the ladder — and rightfully so. Starting as a Sales Coordinator at Manila Galleria Suites, her rise followed a traditional yet meteoric path.
She worked her way up through managerial positions at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, spent time in the National Sales Office as Business Development Manager, and eventually became Director of Sales at Intercontinental Manila.
She held this key role in two other properties before landing at Grand Hyatt Manila, but it was here that she truly found home.
“There’s something magical about this hotel,” she muses. “It compels me to keep telling stories to my
clients and pushes me to fulfillment every single time.”
A Grand Vision for Growth: Cay’s Secret to Success
While she speaks passionately about her pursuit of excellence (and hitting the numbers!), nothing excites her more than talking about her team.
Heading a group of six, she notes that this is the first time she’s led an all-male sales team—a stark contrast to the traditionally female-driven world of hotel sales.
“Sales is often a male-dominated field, but in hotel sales, it’s usually the ones in heels who take the lead,” she quips.
Adapting to a different mentorship style was a learning curve, but one she embraced wholeheartedly.
“When I was on the come up, my bosses practiced the ‘it’s my way or the highway’ method, but with
me, it’s my team member and me together — we work both ways.”
Her secret? A deep investment in people.
Cay firmly believes that in Sales, success isn’t just about the numbers – it’s about developing individuals who can sustain those numbers longterm.
“Quotas are non-negotiable in this field but understanding what makes your people tick should also be of equal priority.”
Despite considering herself more rational than emotional, she doesn’t believe in a one-size-fitsall leadership style.
“I don’t subscribe to a cookie-cutter method for my team members. They are built differently, so I know their roadmaps don’t always intersect with each other. But it warms my heart to know that I walked the path with them.”
Her open-door policy fosters trust, coupled with an unwavering belief in her team and pushes them to be better than they were yesterday.
“What matters is that we’re clear on the goal – because no matter the path, we all reach the same finish line.”
How Cay ‘C’s’ It: Advice for Future Leaders
When asked about the advice she can lend to emerging leaders, she cheekily summarizes it in 3 Cs:
Confidence, because before anything else, you must know how to sell yourself;
Continuous learning, because we must keep evolving with our guests’ needs; and lastly,
Customized cultivation, because the paths people take differ, and won’t always align with the vision you have. But if a clear goal is set, we will all reach the finish line.
