Our team represented Grande Prairie at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce AGM in Medicine Hat, where 28 policy resolutions were adopted—including three we co-sponsored on interprovincial trade, trucking, and regional air service. These directly impact our region’s economy, and we continue pushing for solutions.
Congratulations to Layne Gardner and the Peace River Chamber on their achievements! We value the Chamber network for connecting our members and strengthening our voice with government.

Staying Ahead in an Ever-Changing Digital World
Businesses are increasingly collecting and retaining data, and they have a public responsibility and legal obligation to safeguard this data. Overwhelming incident response costs and confusing legislative requirements make it difficult for businesses to overcome the fallout of a privacy breach without the assistance of a trusted cyber insurance broker and market.
Part 2 of this informational session will focus on the aspects of your business that are vulnerable to a cyber attack, best practices to manage and mitigate this risk, what is covered under a comprehensive, standalone cyber policy, as well as tailored claims scenarios and breach response guidelines.

Supporting homegrown policing solutions
Alberta’s government is providing $7 million in additional funding to Grande Prairie to help the community transition to a municipal police service.
The province is supporting the City of Grande Prairie with an additional $7 million in funding as it transitions to a municipal police service.
This new funding reinforces and builds on the province’s initial $9.7 million two-year commitment.
Since 2023, Grande Prairie has made significant progress in hiring officers and civilian staff, procuring equipment, and beginning the development of essential IT infrastructure for a municipal police service. This support from the province ensures that the city can keep the momentum of its transition going as it lays critical groundwork for the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS).
The funding will support the projected start-up costs associated with building and implementing the new service, including salaries, benefits, recruitment, equipment and training. The GPPS is expected to become the primary police service of jurisdiction for Grande Prairie in 2026.

CAPP REACTION TO THE SPEECH FROM THE THRONE
“CAPP and our members have recognized and appreciate the significant change in tone from Prime Minister Carney’s new federal government on the opportunities that can be created by building on Canada’s oil and natural gas industry. This has been evidenced by conventional energy being included in the Throne Speech and as one of the few industries explicitly included in the Prime Minister’s mandate letter to his Ministers.
In the speech from the Throne, King Charles also spoke about how the federal government is looking for projects of national significance that will deepen Canada’s connections to the world and create high paying jobs for Canadians.
CAPP estimates that the oil and natural gas industry alone has about $26 billion worth of projects under construction yet more than $100 billion planned or waiting for a final investment decision. These projects include LNG export facilities, pipelines, carbon capture projects, and upstream developments that have proponents ready to invest billions of dollars in Canada.
Canada’s oil and natural gas industry is ready to work with the federal government to build Canada into an energy superpower.”
-Lisa Baiton, CAPP President and CEO

Our Statement on Heightened U.S. Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
Last Friday, President Trump announced intentions to double steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada — even though doing so would be antithetical to North American economic security.
These tariffs are expected to come into effect Wednesday, June 4.

Our Statement on the U.S. Court’s Tariff Ruling
"Ultimately, the end of this trade war with the U.S. will not come through the courts. It will come when we have negotiated a durable, new agreement on trade that is trusted and respected by all involved," said our President and CEO, Candace Laing, in a statement responding to the recent U.S. court ruling that blocks some tariffs.
With other tariffs and trade barriers still in place, businesses continue to face economic uncertainty and disruption.

Canada’s Historic Opportunity to Develop Natural Resources
Modesty is no longer a virtue in a world demanding bold leadership. Canada has the potential to be an energy superpower — if we unleash the full potential of our natural resources sector, including responsibly expanding our energy and critical minerals industries.
In an op-ed published in the National Post last week, Bryan Detchou, Senior Director, Natural Resources, Environment and Sustainability, explored the generational opportunity Canada has right now to reshape the trajectory of our country for the next century — if we stop undermining our most productive sector.

Canada’s Critical Role in Solving the Energy Trilemma
The demand for energy is relentlessly climbing, but meeting demand is only one side of the equation. Finding a balanced approach to production that supports security, sustainability, and affordability — what is commonly referred to as the “energy trilemma” — is the other side.
In a recent op-ed for The Hill Times, Olha Sotska, Policy Advisor, explores the role Canada has in helping solve the energy trilemma.
