What the August 1 Deadline for U.S. Trade Deals Could Mean for Canada

The U.S. administration’s deadline for trade deals arrives later this week and will likely will be hugely impactful for Canada and other U.S. trade partners.Sofar,fivecountrieshavestruckdealswiththeU.S.aheadofthe August1deadline:Britain,Vietnam,Indonesia,thePhilippinesandJapan.

Negotiations between Canada and the U.S. have reached an “intense phase,” according to Prime Minister Carney. If a deal comes to pass by August 1, the implications for the existing patchwork of tariffs and tariff threatsthatCanadafacesarenotclear. However, manyareexpectingthat acertaindegreeoftariffswillbeunavoidable.Overtheweekend,President TrumpannouncedthattheU.S.andEuropeanUnionhadagreedtoatrade deal setting a 15% tariff on most goods, which may be reflective of a tariff baseline that the U.S. administration may seek to set with other trade partners.
