The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz and its famous thermal water form a wonderful symbiosis, without which the long company’s success story simply would not have happened. Although for a time the water did become somewhat less important for various reasons, it has long since been again the focus of how we think and what we do – particularly now as we enter this anniversary year.

Während der Golfsaison beginnt der Arbeitstag von Greenkeeper Thomas Metz bereits morgens um halb sechs. Doch ans frühe Aufstehen war er sich schon als Bäcker-Konditor gewohnt. Ausserdem hat die Handarbeit des Konditors durchaus Ähnlichkeit mit der Pflege der prächtigen Park- und Golfanlagen des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

During the golf season, greenkeeper Thomas Metz’s working day starts at 5.30 a.m. But he has long-since been used to getting up early – thanks to his previous job as a baker and pastry chef. Furthermore, the dexterity required as a pastry chef has great similarities to that which is required when maintaining the magnificent parkland areas and golf courses at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Thomas Metz arbeitet seit gut sechs Jahren inmitten der wunderschönen Parks des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. Zu ­seinen Aufgaben gehört auch die Pflege der saftig grünen Golfanlagen der Golf Clubs Bad Ragaz und Heidiland. Greenkeeper nennt man diese rot gekleideten Heinzelmännchen.

Tag für Tag sorgen sie dafür, dass das äussere Erscheinungsbild des Grand Resort allerhöchsten Ansprüchen genügt und die Herzen von Gästen und Golfern erfreut.

Thomas Metz has worked in the glorious Grand Resort Bad ­Ragaz parks for just over six years. He is also responsible for maintaining the rich green golf courses of the Golf Club Bad Ragaz and Heidiland. These little elves in their red uniforms are known as greenkeepers and work day-in, day-out to ­ensure that the Grand Resort’s outdoor areas meet the highest standards of appearance and delight both guests and golfers.

Über den Atlantik und wieder zurück Es war ein langer, aufregender Weg, bis Thomas Metz sich in Bad Ragaz niedergelassen hat. Er wuchs in der Prättigauer Gemeinde Klosters auf und schloss in Chur eine Lehre als Konditor-Confiseur ab. Nach einigen Gesellenjahren in Lausanne, Appenzell und Andeer wanderte er 1988 nach Amerika aus. Zweieinhalb Jahre später zog es ihn ins kanadische Toronto. In verschiedenen der hoch angesehenen Four Season Hotels & Resorts gab er jenseits des Atlantiks als Patissier sein Bestes. Er wirkte bei verschiedenen Hoteleröffnungen mit und kehrte schliesslich 1992 aus Toronto in die Schweiz zurück.

In seiner Heimat Klosters arbeitete er darauf fünf Jahre im Hotel Walserhof sowie in Charly’s Bäckerei und Comestibles.

1997 flatterte ein neues Angebot aus Amerika ins Haus. Der zwischenzeitlich verheiratete Thomas Metz zog mit seiner Frau ins kalifornische Carlsbad und anschliessend nach Boulder, Colorado. 1999 wurde er Vater, und fünf Jahre später kehrte die Familie zur Einschulung des Sohnes in die Schweiz mit Endstation Bad Ragaz zurück. Hier machte sich Thomas Metz auf die Suche nach einer neuen beruflichen Herausforderung. Er entdeckte seine Leidenschaft für den Gartenbau und erhielt eine

Anstellung als Hilfsgärtner in der Region. Durch verschiedene Fachkurse und eingehendes Literaturstudium intensivierte er seine Passion für das Arbeiten in der Natur. So wurde er schliesslich zu einem der Glücklichmacher im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Vier Jahreszeiten – vier Glücksphasen Es ist die Abwechslung, die Thomas Metz jeden Tag aufs Neue gut gelaunt zur Arbeit gehen lässt. Im Frühling erwacht seine Lieblingsfarbe Grün, und damit erwacht auch die Energie des Greenkeepers. «Ich liebe den Frühling. Er hat etwas Beruhigendes und versorgt Gemüt und Körper mit neuer Energie. Man blüht richtig auf», schildert Thomas Metz seine Frühlingsgefühle. Der Frühling ist auch die Jahreszeit, in der die Greenkeeper den Kurpark mit prächtigen Farben bepflanzen und den Golfplatz in einen einzigen grünen Teppich verwandeln.

Im Sommer wird die Parkanlage bis ins letzte Detail gepflegt und in Schwung gehalten. Gleichzeitig sorgen die Greenkeeper dafür, dass sich die beiden Golfplätze in ihrer ganzen Schönheit präsentieren. Im Herbst schliesslich wird das Laub geräumt, alles wird auf die Wintermonate vorbereitet.

Tulpenknollen werden für den nächsten Frühling eingepflanzt, Bäume und Sträucher zurückgeschnitten, und so ist alles bereit, wenn der erste Schnee fällt und die Greenkee8 |

America in 1988. Two and a half years later, he moved to Toronto, Canada. He demonstrated his best pâtissier skills in several of the highly regarded Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts on the far side of the Atlantic and was also involved in several hotel openings before finally leaving Toronto and moving back to Switzerland in 1992.

Back home in Klosters, he then spent five years working in the Hotel Walserhof and Charly’s Bäckerei und Comestibles (a bakery and tea room). In 1997, he received a new offer from America. The now-married Thomas Metz and his wife moved to the Californian city of Carlsbad, followed by Boulder, Colorado. In 1999, he became a father and five years later, the family moved back to Switzerland to school their son, ending up in Bad Ragaz. Here, Thomas Metz decided to look for a new career challenge. He discovered his passion for gardening and found a nearby job as an assistant gardener. Through several specialist courses and intensive reading, he deepened his passion for working outdoors. And so, he joined the team at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Four seasons – four phases of happiness It is the sheer diversity that makes Thomas Metz smile as he heads to work each day. Spring marks the awakening of his favourite colour – green – and with it, the greenkeeper’s joie de vivre. “I love spring. It has something calming about it and

It’s the season when I truly blossom.” fills your body and soul with new energy. It’s the season when you truly blossom,” states Thomas Metz describing his spring fever. Spring is also the season when the greenkeepers plant out the resort’s park with magnificent colours and transform the golf course into a lush, green carpet.

In summer, every last inch of parkland is maintained and nurtured. The greenkeepers also ensure that both of the golf courses are presented in all their glory. In autumn, the fallen

per eine Zeit lang zu Schneeräumern werden. Nun gilt es, Schnee zu pflügen, Wege zu salzen und allfällige Gefahren aus dem Weg zu räumen.

Millimeterarbeit auf den Greens Die perfekte Instandhaltung der Golfplätze gehört im Sommer zu den Hauptaktivitäten des Greenkeepers. «Wenn die Golfer in der Früh ihre erste Runde drehen, muss alles tadellos sein», erklärt Thomas Metz. Dazu gehört das millimetergenaue Mähen der Spielbahnen. Jede Fläche hat eine andere Vorgabe der Rasenhöhe, und dabei ist mit den Maschinen höchste Vorsicht geboten. «Ein Gefährt im Wert von 100 000 Franken zu steuern, flösst einem ganz schön Respekt ein», weiss der Greenkeeper.

Die Abschläge werden dreimal wöchentlich gemäht, doch das Heiligtum der Golfplätze sind die Greens. Sie werden von Hand geschnitten, was viel Geschick und grosse Präzision erfordert. Handarbeit, die Thomas Metz mit seiner früheren Tätigkeit als Konditor vergleicht: «Es hat gewisse Ähnlichkeiten. Auch in der Confiserie arbeitet man mit sehr viel Fingerspitzengefühl und benötigt ein Auge fürs Detail.»

Vom Auge in die Seele «Die Arbeit der Greenkeeper wird von den Gästen haargenau beobachtet, und man wird ständig verglichen mit den Plätzen anderer Luxushotels. Da muss einfach mit höchster Präzision gearbeitet werden.» Thomas Metz kommt während seiner 10 |

leaves are cleared away and everything is prepared for the winter months. Tulip bulbs are planted ready for next spring, trees and bushes are trimmed and everything is made ready for the first snow of the season, when the greenkeepers temporarily become snow clearers. This is the time of year when they plough the snow, grit the paths and clear away any potential hazards.

Precision work on the greens In the summer, perfectly maintaining the golf courses is among the greenkeeper’s main activities. “When golfers head out to play an early morning round, everything has to be perfect,” Thomas Metz explains. This includes the precision mowing of the fairways. The grass has to be a specific length in specific areas, which can only be achieved by operating the mowers with the greatest of care. “A 100,000 Swiss franc machine ­demands a certain level of respect,” the greenkeeper knows.

The tees are mown three times a week but it is the greens that are the holy shrines of the golf courses. These are cut by hand, which naturally takes a great deal of skill and precision. Thomas Metz compares this manual work to his former work as a pastry chef: “There are certain similarities. As a pastry chef, you also need a great deal of dexterity and an eye for detail.”

Delights for the eyes and the soul “Greenkeepers’ work is subject to guests’ constant scrutiny and is forever compared to that at other luxury hotels. As such,

A Sie schätzen die Gespräche mit ihm und erwähnen immer wieder, wie sehr die Farbenpracht ihr Gemüt erfreut und wie gut die Anlage gepflegt ist. Dies macht wiederum den Green­ keeper glücklich.

Ganz am Anfang sei er mal mit dem Bunkerrechen durch das hohe Gras am Rande des Golfplatzes gefahren, als er einen Golfball fand, erzählt er eine Episode. Kurzerhand steckte er den Ball in seine Jackentasche, als ein Golfspieler schrie: «He, das ist mein Ball!» Thomas Metz, der geglaubt hatte, der Ball sei verloren, war das äusserst peinlich. Doch der Mann lachte und klopfte ihm auf die Schulter. Der neue Green­ keeper hatte sein Lehrgeld bezahlt.

Zu Hause pflegt und geniesst Thomas Metz, wen wunderts, übrigens auch einen wunderschönen Garten. Seine Frau ­arbeitet gerne mit, doch einfach ist das nicht. Einem perfek­ tionistischen Profi wie ihm kann man nämlich nur selten alles recht machen. «Und so läuft sie mir halt manchmal davon», schmunzelt Thomas Metz.

They enjoy speaking to him and frequently ­comment that the glorious array of colours delights their very soul as well as on how well kept the grounds are. This in turn makes the greenkeeper happy.

He tells us that when he first started, he was raking the grass at the edge of the golf course when he found a golf ball. He picked it up and put it in his pocket just as a golfer yelled: “Hey, that’s my ball!” Thomas Metz, who thought that some­ one had simply lost the ball, was mortified. But the man laughed and slapped him on the shoulder. The new green­ keeper had learned a lesson the hard way.

Back home, as you may expect, Thomas Metz also tends to and enjoys a wonderful garden. His wife also likes helping him in it, but that is not easy. It is hard to please a perfectionist professional like Thomas Metz. “Sometimes, she simply ends up walking off,” he chuckles.

Jetzt, 175 Jahre später, entstand eine neue.

Sanitärtechniker Sandro Paganini, dessen Churer Unternehmen Paganini Plan AG Integral die topmoderne neue Leitung baute, erzählt von seiner Arbeit.

In 1840, the first thermal water pipeline to Bad Ragaz was completed and put into service. Now, 175 years later, a new one has been created.

Plumbing engineer Sandro Paganini, whose Chur-based company Paganini Plan AG Integral built the new state-of-the-art pipeline, tells us about his work.

Herr Paganini, was macht Ihr Unternehmen und wie kamen Sie zum Auftrag in Bad Ragaz?

Sandro Paganini: Die Paganini Plan AG Integral macht Planungen im Bereich Sanitär, Heizung, Lüftung, Brandschutz und Sprinkleranlagen. Zum Auftrag in Bad Ragaz kamen wir, weil unser Unternehmen grosse Erfahrung im Bau von Mineralwasserleitungen hat. So haben wir vor vielen Jahren die Leitungen bei der Allegra Passugger Mineralquellen AG saniert. Ausserdem hat unser Unternehmen die Abfüllanlage der Mineralquelle Rhäzüns geplant und war auch schon für das Grand Resort Bad Ragaz tätig. Spannend am Auftrag in Bad Ragaz ist die Tatsache, dass dies erst die dritte Leitung ist. Die erste war jene aus Holzteucheln, die 1840 in Betrieb genommen wurde, die zweite die Zuführung aus Eternit Anfang der 1960er-Jahre.

Mr Paganini, what does your company do and how did you get the contract in Bad Ragaz?

Sandro Paganini: Paganini Plan AG Integral plans projects in the fields of plumbing, heating, ventilation, fire protection and sprinkler systems. We were given the contract in Bad Ragaz because our company has a great deal of experience in constructing mineral water pipelines. For example, we renovated the pipelines for Allegra Passugger Mineralquellen AG some years ago. We also planned the filling system used for the

Ausserdem sind wir der Frage nachgegangen, welche Bedürfnisse des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz heute und in Zukunft hat, wie sich also beispielsweise die Kapazitäten entwickeln sollen.

Rhäzüns mineral spring and we already worked for the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz as well. What made the job in Bad Ragaz ­exciting was the fact that this is only the third pipeline to be used here. The first was made from wooden pipes and went into operation in 1840 and the second was made from eternit at the beginning of the 1960s.

Worauf mussten Sie besonders achten?

Wir haben es mit einer Thermalwasserquelle zu tun, die man nicht einfach für längere Zeit abstellen kann, denn sie muss permanent zur Verfügung stehen. Wir mussten also berücksichtigen, dass die Arbeiten im laufenden Betrieb und etappenweise ausgeführt werden müssen. Ausserdem haben wir die Leitung so geplant, dass sie in einer Tiefe von mindestens 80 Zentimetern verläuft. So ist sie vor Beschädigungen durch Steinschlag und Temperaturschwankungen geschützt. In der Taminaschlucht stürzen immer wieder grosse Felsbrocken herab und wir wissen, dass die alten Leitungen mehrmals in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurden. Wir haben uns während der Projektierungsarbeiten für isolierte Kunststoffrohre der Fima Jansen im sanktgallischen Oberriet entschieden. Diese sind dank ihrer Beschaffenheit hervorragend geeignet, Erschütterungen abzufangen. Die Rohre müssen zudem gewährleisten, dass die Temperatur des Wassers konstant bleibt und das Quellwasser nicht verunreinigt wird.

How did you go about the project?

We started by conducting a study, which included a look at the technical situation. A dive even took place to find out the con­ dition of the spring and of the pumping systems in it. You have to know that the water can be pumped out of the spring or taken from the natural overflow. We also asked ourselves whether it was still necessary to keep the existing rock reser­ voir as an interim reservoir, as well as about the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz’s current and future needs, for example, how cap­ acities are likely to develop.

To what did you have to pay particular attention?

We were dealing with a thermal water spring that you couldn’t simply turn off for a prolonged period as it has to be perman ­ ently available. This meant that the work had to be carried out in stages with the supply still working. We also planned the pipeline in such a way that it runs at a depth of at least 80 centi­metres. This protects it against damage caused by falling rocks and temperature fluctuations. Large chunks of rock still occasionally fall from the walls of the Tamina gorge and we know that the old pipelines fell victim to these several times. When planning the project, we decided to use insulated plastic pipes from a company called Jansen based in Oberriet, St. Gallen. The properties of these pipes make them ideal for absorbing any vibrations. The pipes also have to ensure that the water temperature remains constant and that the spring water does not become polluted.

What will happen to the old eternit pipeline?

It will remain in place. It’s still in a good condition and is now being used as a jacket for an emergency pipeline that has been created in parallel to the new main supply pipeline. In the future, two pipelines will therefore cover the four and a half

auf die Notleitung umgeschaltet werden. Die neue Versorgungsleitung weist allerdings einen grösseren Durchmesser auf als die alte. Wir haben sie im Januar probehalber in Betrieb genommen. Das Wasser wurde dabei nur für Reinigungs- und Spülzwecke verwendet, denn neue Leitungen weisen zu Beginn immer Verunreinigungen auf. Jetzt sind beide Leitungen für den Kurbetrieb im Einsatz.

Gab es besondere Herausforderungen beim Bau der neuen Leitung?

Sicherlich die hohen Hygieneanforderungen, die an das Thermalwasser gestellt werden. Eine andere Herausforderung war die Beschränkung der Bauzeit durch den Winter und der Umstand, dass wir uns in einer Schlucht befinden, die im Sommer von vielen Touristen besucht wird. Zum Glück war der vorletzte Winter so mild, dass wir früh mit den Arbeiten beginnen konnten. Man darf auch nicht vergessen, dass das Terrain im hinteren Teil der Schlucht sehr heikel ist, weil wir uns dort in einer Grundwasser-Schutzzone befinden.

Erlebten Sie auch Überraschungen?

Ja, wir stiessen bei der Aushebung des Grabens für die Leitung auf Überreste der alten Holzteuchelleitung von 1840.

Das Holz ist natürlich verrottet, aber die Leitung war noch gut als solche erkennbar. Wir wussten nicht genau, wo die früheren Leitungen verliefen, denn darüber gibt es keine Aufzeichnungen. Dass sie sich in unmittelbarer Nähe der Strasse befanden, war aufgrund der Gegebenheiten in der Taminaschlucht aber klar. Trotzdem gab es zwei, drei Stellen, wo uns der Verlauf der alten Leitungen sehr überrascht hat. Man bekommt grossen Respekt vor der Leistung der damaligen Leute, die mit relativ bescheidenen technischen Mitteln innert kurzer Zeit eine derart gut funktionierende Wasserversorgung zustande brachten.

One thing to note though is that the new supply pipeline has a larger diameter than the old one. We tested it in January, but the water was only used for cleaning and rinsing purposes as new pipelines always have some level of contamination ini­ tially. Both pipelines are now being used for the spa.

Did any particular challenges arise when constructing the new pipeline?

Without a doubt, the high hygiene requirements in relation to the thermal water. A further challenge was the limited con­ struction time due to the winter and the fact that we were working in a gorge that is visited by a high number of tourists in the summer. Fortunately, the winter before last was so mild that we were able to start the work early. You also have to remem­ber that the terrain in the rear section of the gorge is extremely delicate as this is a groundwater conservation area.

Were there any surprises?

Yes. On excavating the trench for the pipeline, we came across the remains of the old wooden pipes from 1840. The wood was naturally rotten but the pipeline was still recognisable. We didn’t know the exact course of the early pipeline as there aren’t any records of this. However, it was clear that it must have run extremely close to the road due to the conditions in the Tamina gorge. Despite this, there were two or three places where the course of the old pipeline surprised us. You have a huge sense of respect for what the people back then achieved in building such a well-functioning water supply system in a very short time with relatively modest technical equipment.

The thermal water pipeline through the Tamina gorge has been the lifeblood of the spa resort in Bad Ragaz for 175 years.

Dieses Jahr feiern die Gemeinde Bad Ragaz und das Grand Resort Bad Ragaz das Jubiläum 175 Jahre Thermalwasser. Doch die Geschichte des Kur- und Badewesens begann bereits im Mittelalter. Allerdings nicht in Bad Ragaz, sondern im finsteren Schlund der Taminaschlucht.

This year, the municipality of Bad Ragaz and the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz are celebrating the 175th anniversary of the thermal water. Use of the thermal water for bathing and regeneration goes much further back, however – all the way to the Middle Ages. Not in Bad Ragaz, but in the murky depths of the Tamina gorge.

Das zumindest berichtete der grosse Schweizer Chronist Aegidius Tschudi (1505–1572). Viele Geschichtsschreiber vertraten eine ähnliche Auffassung – durch Urkunden gestützt wird dies allerdings nicht. Denn erst ein Dokument aus dem Jahre 1382 gibt den ersten gesicherten Hinweis auf die Thermalquelle. Allerdings ist jetzt sogar bereits von einem Bad die Rede, das dem nahen Kloster Pfäfers gehörte.

It is said to have been a hunter who, sometime around the year 1240, happened upon the thermal spring of the Tamina gorge that was to make Bad Ragaz world famous. Or so we are told by the eminent Swiss chronicler Aegidius Tschudi (1505 to 1572). Many historians of the time portrayed a similar version – albeit without any form of supporting documentation. Indeed, the first verified evidence of the thermal spring originates from 1382. Now there was however already mention of a spa, belonging to the nearby monastery in Pfäfers.

Arrested for adultery As early as the 15th century, the spa was described as the “illustrious thermal spring”. And, the description continued, “while difficult and perilous to reach, its wonderful location and arrangement make it almost impossible to describe.” The thermal spring was considered to be “as valuable as gold, with its water so pure, so healthy,” and “beneficial to every possible physical constitution of its visiting guests.” The renowned physician, alchemist, philosopher and theologian Paracelsus (1493/1494 to 1541) also described the healing power of the thermal water of Pfäfers in 1535. | 17

A visit to the Tamina gorge was not a pleasant experience, however. Patients were lowered into the murky gorge on ropes and spent around a week with the warm water in the holes carved out of the rocks, with only brief interruptions. These conditions did no harm to the popularity of the thermal spring, however, and the authorities found themselves faced with the task of protecting visitors from being raided en route, while also ensuring discipline at the gorge itself. In 1479, a guest was arrested for committing adultery at the spa and was freed after having pledged not to enter the spa for “a hundred years”.

Ein Vergnügen war der Aufenthalt in der Taminaschlucht allerdings nicht. Die Kranken wurden an Seilen in den dunklen Schlund hinabgelassen und hielten sich mit nur kurzen Unterbrechungen rund eine Woche in den aus dem Fels herausgeschlagenen Löchern mit dem warmen Wasser auf. Dem Ruhm der Thermalquelle tat dies aber keinen Abbruch, und so sah sich die Obrigkeit vor die Aufgabe gestellt, die Anreisenden vor Überfällen zu schützen, aber auch vor Ort für Disziplin zu sorgen. 1479 wurde ein Gast festgenommen, weil er sich im Bad des Ehebruchs schuldig gemacht hatte.

Als er schwor, das Bad «hundert Jahre» nicht mehr zu betreten, blieb er straflos.

Von Pfäfers nach Bad Ragaz Auf eine Zeit der Blüte zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts, die sich in einer Verbesserung der Infrastruktur niederschlug, folgte der Niedergang. Dass die Thermalquelle 1595/96 versiegte, tat ein Übriges, und auch später kam es immer wieder einmal vor, dass das Wasser ausblieb. 1630 wurde das Thermalwasser erstmals in einer Leitung aus Lärchenholz aus der Schlucht herausgeleitet und das erste Badehaus gebaut. Die heute noch mehrheitlich erhaltenen Gebäude des Alten Bad Pfäfers entstanden zwischen 1704 und 1718 und beherbergten zeitweilig mehr als 300 Genesungssuchende.

From Pfäfers to Bad Ragaz The spa’s heyday at the beginning of the 16th century, which was reflected in the improvement of the infrastructure, was followed by its decline. This decline was consolidated by the fact that the thermal spring dried up once in 1595/1596 and again later on. For the first time in 1630, the thermal water was channelled from the gorge through a larchwood pipe, and the first bathhouse was built. The buildings of Altes Bad Pfäfers,, most of which are still standing today, were constructed between 1704 and 1718 and at times accommodated more than 300 visitors seeking recuperation.

The fact that the bathing facilities were relocated from Bad Pfäfers to Ragaz in the 19th century was due not least to political reasons: the young canton of St. Gallen implemented a policy that was targeted against the power of the church, ending the some 1100-year existence of the monastery in Pfäfers and confiscating its property, including the spa. The new owner felt compelled to modernise the spa facilities and to make the atmosphere more pleasant. After all, Pfäfers had little to offer that could compare with the flair of other renowned spas of Europe.

Big plans for the future At the request of the St. Gallen government, the parliament decided to divert some of the water from the Tamina gorge and set up a new spa close to the small village of Ragaz. A new road was built between the village and Bad Pfäfers, and in just a few months the cantonal engineer Friedrich Wilhelm Hartmann had succeeded in constructing a wooden water pipeline. Almost exactly 175 years ago, more precisely on 31 May 1840, the memorable moment had come: in the presence of a large group of dignitaries and onlookers, the warm water flowed from Bad Pfäfers to Ragaz for the first time to celebratory fireworks and the peal of bells. And, to the delight of all present, the water had lost very little of its heat during transport.

It soon became clear that the future lay not in taking the baths in the dark, forbidding gorge, but in a spa resort in Ragaz. “The time has truly come,” said the St. Gallen Landammann Christian Friedrich Fels, “to think, not with speculation but with realism, of implementing a large-scale plan that will encompass the next 10 or even 50 years, and to ask ourselves: what might Ragaz become if the water is used appropriately, how should

Vor 175 Jahren, genau gesagt am 31. Mai 1840, war der feierliche Moment gekommen: Im Beisein zahlreicher Honoratioren und Schaulustiger, unter Freudenböllern und Glockengeläut, floss das erste Mal warmes Wasser vom Bad Pfäfers nach Ragaz. Und siehe da: Unterwegs hatte es kaum etwas von seiner Wärme eingebüsst.

Schnell zeigte sich, dass die Zukunft nicht dem Bad in der dunklen, unwirtlichen Schlucht gehörte, sondern einem Kurort Ragaz. «Die Zeit ist wirklich da», so der St. Galler Landammann Christian Friedrich Fels begeistert, «in der man ohne gewagte Spekulation an die Ausführung eines grossen Planes denken darf, wo man auf 10, auf 50 Jahre hinausblicken und sich vorstellen muss: Was kann Ragaz bei sachgemässer Leitung werden, wie soll von Anfang an gebaut und der ganze Platz benutzt werden, damit bei künftigem Wachsen der Anstalt planmässig fortgefahren werden kann?»

A powerful visionary was needed to transform Ragaz into the destination that Landammann Fels had dreamed of. This visionary appeared in the form of Bernhard Simon (1816 to 1900), who originated from Canton Glarus and had grown up in modest circumstances before becoming a highly acclaimed architect in the Russian city of St. Petersburg from 1839 onward. Forced to return to Switzerland by health issues, he first worked in the railway industry before returning to architecture in 1860.

In March 1868, Bernhard Simon acquired the Hof Ragaz estate with the existing spa and hotel, as well as the spa in Pfäfers and the thermal spring. As part of the acquisition, he was required to commit to building a new hotel, a park, a public hall

fragtesten Architekten aufgestiegen. Gesundheitliche Probleme zwangen ihn zur Rückkehr in die Schweiz, wo er zunächst im Eisenbahnwesen arbeitete und sich ab 1860 wieder als Architekt betätigte.

Im März 1868 erwarb Simon die Domäne Hof Ragaz mit dem bestehenden Bad und Gasthof sowie das Bad in Pfäfers und die Thermalwasserquelle. Dabei musste er sich verpflichten, in Ragaz ein weiteres Hotel, eine Parkanlage, einen Kursaal, eine Trinkhalle und neue Badeeinrichtungen anzulegen. Sofort machte sich Simon ans Werk. Am 1. April 1868, also nur wenige Tage nach dem Erwerb, kam es zum symbolischen ersten Spatenstich und trotz mancher Hindernisse, etwa in Form von Hochwasser, konnte das Hotel Quellenhof Ende Juli 1869 seine ersten Gäste empfangen.

Theodor Fontanes Schilderung Bernhard Simon führte den Kurbetrieb streng und penibel.

Meist schon vor sechs Uhr morgens begab er sich auf Inspektionsrunde und scheute sich auch nicht, in den Vieh- und Pferdeställen nach dem Rechten zu sehen. «Herrisch im Gehabe und im Reden – er sprach ein zackiges Hochdeutsch – liess er sich bisweilen zu masslosen Ausbrüchen hinreissen», heisst es in einer Biografie. Derselbe Bernhard Simon konnte jedoch auch sehr grosszügig sein und förderte das Dorf Ragaz nach Kräften. Dies ungeachtet der Tatsache, dass es immer wieder Spannungen zwischen ihm und den Dorfbewohnern gab. Doch als Simon starb, wurde er unter grosser Anteilnahme der Ragazer zu Grabe getragen.

He set to work without delay. On 1 April 1868, just a few days after the acquisition, a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony was held and, despite a range of setbacks that included flooding, the hotel Quellenhof was ready to receive its first guests by the end of July 1869.

Depiction by Theodor Fontane Bernhard Simon’s approach to running the resort was strict and meticulous. His daily inspection round generally commenced before six o’clock and also took in the cattle and horse stables. “Masterful in demeanour and speech – he spoke a sharp High German – he was occasionally prone to excessive outbursts,” reports a biography. The very same Bernhard Simon could also be extremely generous and did all he could to promote the village of Ragaz, despite the frequent tensions between him and the residents. On his death, however, Bernhard Simon was laid to rest with the heartfelt sympathy of Ragaz villagers.

In the Belle Époque, by 1914 Ragaz had evolved into a spa destination of international renown, with 106,000 nights being recorded in 1913. The German poet Theodor Fontane (1819 to 1898) commented in a letter: “My wife is suffering from severe rheumatism and is at her wits’ end – Ragaz is her last hope. A Swiss spa with all the trimmings and, undoubtedly, with all the costs. Naturally, I took a look in Baedecker and found a river called Tamina. Somewhat reminiscent of The Magic Flute, it sounds very appealing. But nevertheless a great story, this Bad Pfäfers. As long as it is considered a spa, it will be nothing more than a gorge, a big oven into which the visitors are | 21

106 000 Logiernächte registriert. Der deutsche Dichter Theodor Fontane (1819–1898) berichtete in einem Brief: «Meine Frau laboriert an einem Rheumatismus, hochgradig und schon nicht mehr schön. Da ist denn bei Ragaz der letzte Trumpf. Schweizerbad mit allen Schikanen und wahrscheinlich auch mit allen Kosten. Habe natürlich im Baedeker nachgeschlagen und unter anderem einen Fluss verzeichnet gefunden, der Tamina heisst. Er erinnert ein bisschen an Zauberflöte und klingt soweit ganz gut. Aber trotzdem eine tolle Geschichte dies Bad Pfäfers. Soweit es nämlich als Bad in Betracht kommt, ist es nichts als ein Felsenloch, ein grosser Backofen, in dem man hineingeschoben wird. Da hockt man dann wie die Indianer. Und die Dämpfe steigen siedeheiss von unten herauf. Wer da nicht mehr zustande kommt, der kann überhaupt einpacken.»

Neubeginn in den Fünfzigerjahren Die Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkriegs und die Verarmung grosser Bevölkerungsschichten in der Zwischenkriegszeit bereiteten dieser Erfolgsgeschichte vorerst ein Ende. 1920 zählte man gerade noch 56 000 Logiernächte. Der Zweite Weltkrieg erwies sich für den Bädertourismus als ebenso verheerend wie der Erste Weltkrieg, und 1941 brannte zu allem Übel auch noch der Dachstock des geschlossenen «Quellenhofs» aus. Zwei Jahre später musste die 1911 gegründete Bad und Kuranstalten Ragaz-Pfäfers AG sogar Nachlassstundung beantragen, sodass die Aktien der Familie Simon an die St. Galler Kantonalbank übergingen. Sie war ab 1952 alleinige Eigentümerin der Kuranstalt.

Mitte der Fünfzigerjahre waren die mageren vier Jahrzehnte vorüber. Doch war lange nichts investiert worden, sodass

inserted. They perch there like Native Americans. And the boiling vapour rises from below. Anyone who does not find themselves transformed in this environment can give up and go home.”

A fresh start in the fifties The devastation of the First World War and the poverty suffered by large sections of the population in the interwar period brought this success story temporarily to an end. In 1920, just 56,000 nights were recorded. The Second World War was equally catastrophic for bathing tourism as the First and, to make matters worse, in 1941 the top floor of the closed Quellenhof was destroyed by fire. Two years later, the company Bad und Kuranstalten Ragaz-Pfäfers AG, which had been established in 1911, was even forced to apply for a moratorium on debt enforcement, with the shares held by the Simon family being transferred to St. Galler Kantonalbank. From 1952, the bank was the sole owner of the resort.

By the mid-fifties, the lean times of the preceding four decades had come to an end. With no investment having been made for sometime, however, large sums of money were needed to restore the resort, renamed Bad Ragaz in 1937, to its former glory. The idea to convert the Quellenhof into a hospital or even demolish it was discarded in 1953. Instead, it was decided to create a new, first-class hotel.

The switch to year-round operation The resurrected Quellenhof opened its doors in June 1957 with the new Medical Health Center, and the sizeable investment had paid off: between 1956 and 1968, the number of nights in Bad Ragaz rose from just below 97,000 (almost as many as in

With the construction of the Pizolbahnen in 1954, however, Bad Ragaz became a winter sports destination, and those responsible for the spa resort were faced with the challenge of providing a year-round service – if only with a view to realising a return on their extensive investment. The Hof Ragaz was made “winterproof” first in the 1970s, followed by the Quellenhof in the 1980s. In order to meet the increased demand for thermal water, the company also embarked on modernising the tapping of the spring.

The 1980s and 1990s brought even bigger changes, however: the emergence of the wellness concept and the political upheaval in Eastern Europe in 1989/1990 that gave rise to new potential – not only for customers but also for competition – and called for appropriate concepts. As early as 1988 an investment budget of 78 million Swiss francs was approved.

Precisely 150 years after the celebrated launch of the thermal water pipeline, 31 May 1990 marked the completion of the renovation of the historical Palais and part of Hof Ragaz, as well as further infrastructure improvements. In 1992, the opening of the new wellness and fitness area To B. The Leading Health Club completed the transformation of Hof Ragaz, followed in 1995/1996 by the demolition and rebuilding of the Quellenhof with a budget of over 70 million Swiss francs.

Classic spa tourism was in crisis during this period, and this was felt by both of the Grand Hotels. The company management set itself the goal of becoming Europe’s leading health,

Mit dem Bau der Pizolbahnen (1954) hatte sich Bad Ragaz jedoch zu einem Wintersportort weiterentwickelt, und auch die Verantwortlichen des Kurbetriebs hatten sich nun mit der Frage eines ganzjährigen Angebots zu befassen – dies schon deshalb, weil sich die kostspieligen Investitionen amortisieren mussten. In den Siebzigerjahren wurde zunächst der Hof Ragaz und in den Achtzigerjahren der Quellenhof wintertauglich gemacht. Um den gestiegenen Bedarf an Thermalwasser zu decken, nahm das Unternehmen ausserdem die Erneuerung der Quellfassung in Angriff.

Doch die Achtziger- und Neunzigerjahre brachten noch grössere Veränderungen: Das Aufkommen des Wellnessge-

dankens und die politischen Umwälzungen in Osteuropa 1989/90, die ein neues Kunden-, aber auch Konkurrenzpotenzial entstehen liessen, verlangten nach zeitgemässen Konzepten. Bereits 1988 war ein Investitionsbudget von 78 Millionen Franken bewilligt worden. Am 31. Mai 1990, exakt 150 Jahre nach dem Jubel über die Thermalwasserleitung, feierte man die Renovation des fürstäbtlichen Palais und eines Teils des Hofs Ragaz sowie weitere Verbesserungen der Infrastruktur. 1992 wurde der neue Wellness- und Fitnessbereich To B. The Leading Health Club des Hofs Ragaz in Betrieb genommen, womit dessen Umgestaltung abgeschlossen war. 1995/96 folgten der Abriss und Wiederaufbau des Quellenhofs mit einem Volumen von mehr als 70 Millionen Franken.

In diesen Jahren befand sich der klassische Kurtourismus in einer Krise, und das bekamen auch die beiden Grand Hotels zu spüren. Die Unternehmensleitung verfolgte daher das Ziel, zum führenden Health, Spa & Golf Resort Europas aufzusteigen, zu dem auch ein Casino gehören sollte. Wichtigste Bedingung für den Erfolg dieser Strategie war jedoch die Verlängerung der Konzession für das Thermalwasser, die eine Laufzeit bis 2017 hatte. 2003 war die weitere Nutzung der «Thermalquelle Therme Pfäfers zum Quellwasserbezug für Trink-, Therapie-, Bade- und Heizzweck» unter Dach und Fach, wobei diese erneuerte Konzession eine Laufzeit bis 2067 hat.

Das Wasser machte es möglich Unter der operativen Leitung von Peter P. Tschirky verwirklichte das Grand Resort Bad Ragaz schliesslich bis 2009 die Umgestaltung des Kursaals zum Business- und Event-Center, eine Totalrenovation des Hofs Ragaz vom Vier- zum Fünfsternhotel, ein drittes Hotel im neuen Spa-Suiten-Tower sowie die neu gestaltete Tamina Therme. Ausserdem wurden der Wellbeing-Bereich und das Medizinische Zentrum sowie das Therapiegebäude erweitert. Am 1. September 2014 eröffnete last but not least die Clinic Bad Ragaz, die Rehabilitationsmedizin auf höchstem Niveau bietet. Derzeit ist eine neue Leitung für das Thermalwasser in Bau, in 175 Jahren erst die dritte (siehe Seite 12).

Vom ersten Badebetrieb in der Obhut des Klosters Pfäfers bis zum Grand Resort Bad Ragaz war es wahrlich ein langer Weg. Möglich gemacht hat ihn zu allen Zeiten das 36.5° C warme Thermalwasser. Ob Mensch des Mittelalters oder des 21. Jahrhunderts, ob Suche nach Heilung oder nur Entspannung – die Wertschätzung für dieses unbezahlbare Geschenk der Natur verbindet über Generationen und Jahrhunderte hinweg.

The most important condition for the success of this strategy was, however, the extension of the licence for use of the thermal water, which was due to expire in 2017. In 2003, the continued exploitation of the “Therme Pfäfers thermal spring for the use of spring water for drinking, therapeutic, bathing and heating purposes” had been established, with a new licence having been granted until 2067.

All thanks to water By 2009, under the operational management of Peter P. Tschirky, the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz had transformed the Kursaal into the Business & Events Center, upgraded the Hof Ragaz from a 4-star to a 5-star hotel, added a third hotel in the new Spa Suites Tower and redesigned the Tamina Therme. In addition, the wellbeing area, the Medical Health Center and the therapy building were extended. Last but not least, 1 September 2014 saw the opening of the Clinic Bad Ragaz, which offers rehabilitation medicine of the highest standard. A new pipeline for the thermal water is currently under construction, only the third in its 175-year existence (see page 12).

The route from the spa facility run by the monastery in Pfäfers to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz of today has been a long one.

Every step of the way, this has all been made possible by the 36.5°C thermal water. Whether in the Middle Ages or in the 21st century, whether for convalescence or relaxation – appreciation of this priceless gift from nature has been a common denominator throughout the generations and the centuries.

Er war ein vielseitig interessierter, aber wohl nicht zuletzt deshalb ruheloser Geist: Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus von Hohenheim (1493/94 – 1541), heute besser bekannt als Paracelus. Als Arzt, Alchemist, Theologe und Philosoph ebenso verehrt wie geschmäht, führte ihn sein ebenfalls von Ruhelosigkeit geprägtes Leben durch das Elsass, Süddeutschland, die Schweiz und Österreich.

Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus von Hohenheim (1493/1494 to 1541), better known as Paracelsus, was a somewhat restless man with many different interests. Both revered and reproached as a doctor, alchemist, theologist and philosopher, his restless life took him through the Alsace, southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Die Heilkraft des Thermalwassers von Pfäfers erachtete Paracelsus als so bemerkenswert, dass er dazu 1535 eine kleine Schrift verfasste. Er widmete sie Johann Jakob Russinger, Abt des Klosters Pfäfers und Paracelsus′ Patient. Der Titel des Büchleins: «Über das Bad Pfäfers in der Oberschweiz – seine Tugenden, Kräfte und Wirksamkeit, Ursprung und Herkunft, Richtlinien und Verordnung». Es enthält neben mancherlei Spekulationen über den Grund für die Existenz der Thermalquelle sehr konkrete Aussagen über die Wirksamkeit des Wassers und bei welchen Krankheiten es helfen könne. So etwa bei «gekrümmten, kraftlos gewordenen Gliedmassen oder Lähmungen», bei «gichtigen Erkrankungen» und «an Auszehrung leidenden Körperteilen».

Als früher Pionier der Balneologie rühmte Paracelsus die Heilkraft der Pfäferser Thermalquelle.

«Baden bis zur Genesung» Paracelsus erteilte auch Anweisungen, wie man sich während der Kur verhalten solle, nämlich: «Ganz bis zur Genesung baden, und wenn eine Badekur nicht genug bewirken sollte, dann diese verlängern bis zum Erfolg. Mit Speis und Trank soll man mässig und sorgsam umgehen und auf gar keine Weise Völlerei betreiben. Sich warm halten, sich nicht mit kaltem Wasser waschen, sich auch vor Wind hüten, desgleichen sich mit Kleidern und Schuhen gut schützen. Nicht der Unkeuschheit huldigen und nicht durch solche Dinge die Kräfte des Bades aufs Spiel setzen !»

Paracelsus was so amazed by the healing powers of the thermal water in Pfäfers that he wrote a short book on them in 1535. Entitled “Über das Bad Pfäfers in der Oberschweiz – seine Tugenden, Kräfte und Wirksamkeit, Ursprung und Herkunft, Richtlinien und Verordnung” (“About Bad Pfäfers in Upper Switzerland – its virtues, power and effectiveness, source and origin, rules and regulations”), he dedicated this to Johann Jakob Russinger, abbot of the monastery in Pfäfers and Paracelsus’ patient. As well as several speculations about why the thermal spring exists, the book also contains very specific statements about the effectiveness of the water and the health problems that it can help with. These include “hunched, weak limbs or paralyses”, “gout” and “body parts that are wasting away”.

Solche Ratschläge mögen uns heute schmunzeln lassen, Tatsache ist jedoch, dass Paracelsus zu den Pionieren der Balneologie, also der Lehre von der therapeutischen Anwendung natürlicher Heilquellen, zählt und viele der in Bad Pfäfers und Bad Ragaz tätigen Mediziner dieselben Fragen beschäftigten wie ihn: Welche Heilwirkungen hat das Wasser der Thermalquelle und wie lässt es sich am effektivsten nutzen?

Die führende Rolle von Bad Ragaz «Körperwarmes Wasser ist ein ideales Medium für das Training und die Wiederertüchtigung des Behinderten. Die medizinische Abteilung der Thermalbäder und Grand Hotels Bad Ragaz wurde daher ganz in den Dienst der modernen Rehabilitationsmedizin gestellt.» Diese Worte stammen von Wilhelm Martin Zinn (1916 – 2000), der 1957 seine Arbeit in Bad Pfäfers und Bad Ragaz aufnahm. In seiner Funktion als Leiter des Medizinischen Zentrums etablierte der renommierte Rheumatologe ein Zentrum, das aufgrund seiner multidisziplinären Arbeitsweise stets Weltruf genoss. In Zinns Amtszeit fiel 1969 die Aufgabe des Bades in Pfäfers zugunsten der Klinik in Valens, über die er kurz zuvor schrieb, dass dort die medizinischen Leistungen «auch dem schwerer Geschädigten unter Spitalbedingungen zugutekommen» würden.

“Bathe until fully recovered” Paracelsus also provided instructions about how to behave during treatments, namely: “Bathe until you are fully recovered, and if one bathing treatment does not suffice, extend this until it does. Eat and drink moderately and carefully, and never give yourself over to gluttony. Keep warm, do not wash in cold water, protect yourself against the wind and wear warm clothes and shoes. Do not engage in unchastity or similar activities that could compromise the healing effects of bathing!”

Such advice might make us chuckle today but Paracelsus was among the pioneers of balneology, the teaching of the therapeutic use of natural healing springs. He dealt with the same question as many of the doctors who worked in Bad Pfäfers and Bad Ragaz: what healing powers does the thermal spring water have and how can it be used most effectively?

Bad Ragaz takes on a leading role “Body-temperature water is the ideal exercise and rehabilitation medium for the disabled. As such the medical department of the thermal baths and Grand Hotels Bad Ragaz is entirely dedicated to modern rehabilitation medicine.” These were the words of Wilhelm Martin Zinn (1916 to 2000), who began to work in Bad Pfäfers and Bad Ragaz in 1957. Within the scope of his work as director of the Medical Health Center, the renowned rheumatologist established a center that enjoyed continuous global prestige due to its multidisciplinary methods.

In 1969, during Zinn’s time as director, the spa in Pfäfers shut down in favour of the clinic in Valens. Shortly before this, Zinn had written that the clinic’s medical services would “also benefit seriously injured patients under hospital conditions”. | 27

Pionierarbeit in Bad Ragaz Wer die Ausbildung zum haki® -Therapeuten macht, lernt bei Harald Kitz sogar zu jonglieren. «Denn die haki® -Methode verlangt ein Gespür für unterschiedliche Rhythmen. Eine normale Behandlung folgt immer demselben Rhythmus, der kopflastige Mensch braucht jedoch unterschiedliche Rhythmen, um sich fallen lassen zu können. Ich stamme aus einer Kärntner Familie, in der die Musik eine sehr grosse Rolle

Absolut neu an der haki® -Methode ist die Möglichkeit, sie auch im Wasser anzuwenden. «Die Tamina Therme ist schweizweit die erste Therme, in der wir das praktizieren, wir leisten hier also Pionierarbeit», verrät Harald Kitz. «Bei haki® flow, so der Name der Behandlung, liegt der Gast auf dem Wasser. Gesichert wird er durch dehnbare Bänder an den Fussfesseln, zudem bekommt er unter die Knie eine Schwimmhilfe, sodass er das Gefühl hat, wie in einer Hängematte zu schweben. Berührung, Druck und Dehnung erfolgen dann auf die gleiche Weise wie auf der Behandlungsliege.» Wer haki® flow erleben dürfe, verliere schnell das Raumgefühl. «Das Becken der Tamina Therme wirkt dann unendlich gross und dieses Gefühl kennt der kopflastige Mensch nicht. The name haki ® stands for both its creator, Harald Kitz, as well as for the words haptic (from the Ancient Greek word for touch) and kinetic (from the Ancient Greek word for move­ ment). “It’s about a lot more than just different massage strokes”, says Harald Kitz. “The language and the scents used, the presence of the therapist and the images that arise in the guest’s imagination are also very important. Furthermore, I don’t want this method to be overly difficult for massage ther­ apists so that it wears them out. I want to make sure that they enjoy their work and can maintain the level of excellence that I expect from them.”

Pioneering work in Bad Ragaz Anyone who participates in the training to become a haki ® therapist must learn how to juggle. “This is because the haki ® method requires practitioners to develop a feeling for different rhythms. Normal massage treatments always use the same rhythm, but people who are trying to relax their minds require different rhythms in order to truly let go. I grew up in a family from the Carinthia region of southern Austria in which music played an important role. That is why I consider each individual to be like a musical instrument. I need to compose a personal­ ised form of touch for each person in order to give them a sense of security. This feeling of security is extremely import­ ant for people who are stressed, especially when they are try­ ing to let go and fully relax.”

Menschen, die mit Liebe zu ihrem Beruf auf eine spielerische Art professionell sind und das Erlernte anwenden können.»

In der Tamina Therme werden neben dem erwähnten haki® flow mit einer Dauer von 75 Minuten folgende Varianten angeboten: Bei haki® stretch & relax (Dauer 50 Minuten) konzen­triert sich die Behandlung speziell auf den Bereich Schulter, Nacken und Kopf. Zum Teil wird auch an den Füssen gearbeitet, um den Körper bestmöglich zu erden. Die so erreichte Harmonie im Nerven- und Muskelsystem führt zu Ausgeglichenheit und Regeneration. haki® sacral (Dauer 25 Minuten) zielt darauf ab, Verspannungen im Rücken zwischen Lendenwirbelsäule und Gesäss zu lösen. The latest version of the haki ® method involves performing the massage while the guests are floating in water. “The Tamina Therme is the first Swiss spa to offer this treatment. We are trying something completely new,” reveals Harald Kitz. “The treatment is called haki ® flow. During the treatment the guests are ‘lying’ on the water in the Tamina Therme. Elastic bands fastened to their ankles ensure that they don’t float away, and a flotation device placed under their knees offers additional support, giving them a similar feeling to lying in a hammock.

The treatment then involves touch, pressure and stretching in the same way it would on the massage table.” During haki ® flow, guests soon lose their sense of space. “Guests feel like the pool in the Tamina Therme has become infinitely large, which is a new sensation for people who are trapped in their own thoughts. The moment that someone can lose their sense of space they can let go of their stress, and that is the nicest feeling that a person can experience.”

Four treatment options Harald Kitz began training the therapeutic team at the Tamina Therme in the haki ® method last December. haki ® flow ­requires therapists to be particularly attuned to guests’ needs.

“The treatment rooms are familiar territory, but having to interact with a stranger while at the same time floating in water ­requires a great deal more trust from the guests. That is why it is important for me to find the right team so that we can work together to become the best,” says Harald Kitz, describing his goals. “It doesn’t make a big difference if the team is made up of doctors, massage therapists or physiotherapists. What’s important is that everyone on the team is musically inclined and that they are able to transport guests into a completely different state of mind using different movement patterns. I need people who are genuinely committed to their profession, who approach their daily work with a playful professionalism and can successfully apply everything that they have learned.”

Alongside haki ® flow, which is conducted in 75-minute sessions, the Tamina Therme also offers the following haki ® massages: haki ® stretch & relax treatments (50-minute sessions) focus specifically on the shoulders, neck and head; however these treatments also involve the feet in order to keep the body grounded. The harmony that this treatment creates in the nervous and muscular systems results in a state of b­ alance and regeneration. haki ® sacral (25-minute sessions) targets tension in the lower back between the lumbar region of the spine and the bottom. Weltmeister-Märchen Wenn Leidenschaft auf Motivation und Können trifft, kann Grossartiges entstehen. Etwas, das manchmal sogar zu Tränen rührt. So geschehen an der Saunaweltmeisterschaft letzten Oktober im österreichischen Bad Hofgastein. Diana Laig und Maik Brandenburg holten sich mit ihrer Aufführung «Rotkäppchen - neu verfilmt» verdient den Weltmeistertitel.

Ihr Aufgussspektakel kam bei Publikum und Jury so gut an, dass nicht nur Schweiss, sondern auch ein paar Tränen flossen. «Unsere Performance hat die Leute emotional berührt, einige haben tatsächlich geweint», erzählt die Weltmeisterin.

Das Bad Ragazer Team hat sich intensiv auf die WM vorbereitet. Monatelang wurde dreimal wöchentlich geprobt und an der Performance gefeilt.

Das Thema Rotkäppchen schwirrte Diana Laig schon länger im Kopf herum. «Nur der Wolf fehlte noch», sagt die sympathische junge Frau und lächelt verschmitzt. Den Wolf fand sie schliesslich in Maik Brandenburg. Als er im Frühling 2014 zur Tamina Therme stiess, war er sofort begeistert von Dianas Idee. Mit viel Liebe zum Detail kreierten die beiden das Aufgussspektakel und entwickelten eine spürbare Leidenschaft, die das Saunapublikum fasziniert. Sie verpacken den Aufguss in drei Akte, entführen das Publikum in eine Zauberwelt und machen den Saunagang zu einem bleibenden Er­ lebnis für alle Sinne. Storytelling in der Sauna - eine Kunst, die die beiden Saunameister perfekt inszenieren.

A world-class fairy tale When passion, motivation and skill are combined, great things can ensue. Things that sometimes even bring you to tears.

This is precisely what happened at the Sauna World Cup last October in the Austrian town of Bad Hofgastein. Diana Laig and Maik Brandenburg deservedly won the title of world champions with their performance of “Little Red Riding Hood – the remake”. Their spectacular infusion performance touched the audience and the judging panel so much that it drew not only sweat but also a few tears. “Our performance moved people emotionally; some of them even cried,” Diana Laig comments.

The Bad Ragaz team put a great deal of hard work into preparing for the World Cup. They practiced three times a week for months, gradually refining their performance.

The theme of Little Red Riding Hood is one that had been floating around Diana Laig’s head for a long time. “All that was missing was the wolf,” says the amicable young lady with a mischievous smile. She finally found the wolf in the person of Maik Brandenburg. On joining the Tamina Therme team in spring 2014, he instantly loved Diana’s idea. The pair worked together to meticulously create the infusion spectacle and developed a tangible passion that fascinated the sauna ­ ­audience. They divided the infusion into three acts, whisked the audience away to a magical world and transformed the sauna session into a lasting experience for all the senses. ­Storytelling in the sauna – an art that the two sauna specialists perfectly mastered.

Wer die landschaftlichen Reize in der Umgebung des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz kennenlernen und dabei noch etwas für die Gesundheit tun möchte, hat ein abwechslungsreiches Outdoorprogramm zur Verfügung. «Wir bieten Wandern, Jogging, Nordic Walking sowie Fahrrad- und Mountainbiketouren auf ganz unterschiedlichen Leistungsstufen. Ausserdem Yoga, Pilates, Fuss fit und Wassertraining», sagt Annik Disch, Teamleiterin des Bereichs Body & Sports. «Die kürzeren Touren führen in die nähere Umgebung von Bad Ragaz, beispielsweise in den Giessenpark oder auf den Guschachopf direkt oberhalb des Dorfs», sagt Annik Disch.

«Wenn wir länger unterwegs sind, geht es in die Bündner Herrschaft, Richtung Valens, St. Margrethenberg oder auf den Flumserberg. Und an heissen Sommertagen ist natürlich die schattig-kühle Taminaschlucht sehr verlockend. Das Tolle an der Region Bad Ragaz ist, dass sie alles bietet, flaches Gelände ebenso wie steile Berge.» Die sportlichen Begleiter bringen ihre Gäste vor allem an eher unbekannte Ziele, man profitiert gewissermassen von Insidertipps.

Zu den vielseitigen Outdooraktivitäten zählt auch, wie bereits erwähnt, Nordic Walking, eine Sportart, von der manche glauben, sie erfordere keine besondere Technik. «Aber das ist ein grosser Irrtum», meint Annik Disch schmunzelnd, «denn Nordic Walking ist etwas anderes als nur mit Stöcken zu laufen. Wir bringen unseren Gästen die richtige Technik bei, und spätestens wenn sie die Rumpfspannung spüren und es bergauf geht, merken sie, dass Nordic Walking kein ‹easy going› ist.»

Wer sich lieber auf dem Fahrrad fortbewegt, hat jederzeit die Möglichkeit, im Resort kostenlos einen Flyer, ein City-, Eoder Mountainbike auszuleihen und selber die Gegend zu erkunden. Oder sich mit einem der sportlichen Begleiter individuell oder in der Gruppe auf den Weg zu machen. «Wer es

Annik Disch and her team come up with all sorts of fantastic ideas to offer Grand Resort Bad Ragaz guests an attractive outdoor programme.

Anyone who wants to get out and explore the beautiful natural landscape around the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz while also boosting their health can avail of a diverse outdoor programme. “We offer hiking, jogging and Nordic walking as well as road and mountain bike rides for people of all different abilities. We also offer yoga, Pilates, foot fitness and water gymnastics,” comments Annik Disch, head of the Body & Sports team. Guests can simply turn up to the shorter activities, for the longer ones they are asked to pre-register by no later than the previous day.

“The short trips take guests to areas near to Bad Ragaz, for example to the Giessenpark or to the Guschachopf view point just above the village,” says Annik Disch. “If we’re heading out for longer trips, we visit the Bündner Herrschaft, head towards

anspruchsvoll mag, kann mit uns auf dem Mountainbike zur St. Luzisteig an der Grenze zum Fürstentum Liechtenstein oder auf den Ochsenberg oberhalb von Maienfeld fahren», sagt Annik Disch. «Dazu muss man kein durchtrainierter Mountainbiker sein.»

Spazieren allein reicht nicht Ist das Wetter wirklich schlecht, kann zwar die eine oder andere Tour nicht stattfinden, ansonsten aber ist Regen für das Outdoorprogramm kein Hindernis. «Gerade unsere Gäste aus dem arabischen Raum lieben den Regen», weiss Annik Disch. Wichtig sei vor allem, die Pulsfrequenz zu erhöhen.

Spazieren sei zwar gut und schön, aber es heisse nicht umsonst: «Ohne Schweiss kein Preis». Gerade Menschen, die viel sitzen, sollten sich täglich eine Stunde lang intensiv bewegen. «Allerdings achten wir in unserem Programm immer darauf, dass das Angebot alters- und bedürfnisgerecht ist.»

Sie und ihr Team möchten die Touren mit den Gästen nicht mehr missen. «Da die Gruppen nie mehr als acht Personen zählen, geht es oft sehr lustig zu und her», sagt Annika Disch.

«Man kommt miteinander ins Gespräch, und im Herbst kann es schon einmal vorkommen, dass alle zusammen noch in einem Weintorkel der Bündner Herrschaft einkehren, um den Tag gemütlich ausklingen zu lassen.» Das ganze Team freut sich bereits wieder darauf, mit den Gästen in traumhaft schönen Landschaften unterwegs zu sein. «Und ich bin sicher», so die Teamleiterin, «dass jeder Gast in unserem abwechslungsreichen Programm etwas findet, das ihm zusagt.»

Valens or go to the St. Margrethenberg or the Flumserberg mountains. And on hot summer’s days, the cool, shady Tamina gorge is extremely enticing. What makes the Bad Ragaz region so great is that it offers a little bit of everything, from flat countryside to steep mountains.” The guides from the sports team mainly take their guests to lesser known places, enabling them to benefit from a good few insider tips.

As mentioned above, one of the many outdoor activities available is Nordic walking, a type of sport that many people don’t realise involves technique. “But they couldn’t be more wrong,” Annik Disch says with a grin. “There’s far more to Nordic walking than just walking with sticks. We teach our guests the right technique and when they feel their glutes as they head uphill, they quickly realise that Nordic walking is far from ‘easy going’.”

Those who prefer cycling can borrow a Flyer, city, electric or mountain bike from the resort and head out to discover the area for themselves. Members of the sports team also take guests out on individual or group bike rides. “Those looking for something a bit more demanding can join us on a mountain bike ride to St. Luzisteig on the Liechtenstein border or to the Ochsenberg mountain above Maienfeld,” comments Annik Disch. “You don’t have to be a highly experienced mountain biker to join these rides.”

Simply walking is not enough Although some activities have to be cancelled if the weather is particularly bad, rain is not generally an obstacle for the outdoor programme. “Our Arab guests in particular seem to love the rain,” Annik Disch comments from experience. The most important thing is to raise the heart rate. Walking is all well and good, but there also is a good reason behind the saying “no pain, no gain”. An hour of intensive exercise a day is particularly recommended for those who spend a lot of time sitting down. “In offering our programme, we are always careful to ensure that the activities are suitable for people’s age and needs.”

Annik Disch and her team no longer want to miss out on tours with guests. “As we have a maximum group size of eight, tours are often a great laugh,” she says. “You get to speak to each other and in the autumn, we sometimes even get the chance to stop off in a Bündner Herrschaft wine cellar as a relaxed way to end the day.” The entire team is already looking forward to heading back out into the beautiful natural landscapes with their guests. “And I’m certain that all of our guests will find something they like in our diverse programme,” Annik Disch comments.

A laser treatment with the secret laser can be used, for example, to help minimise wrinkles. Den 25. Oktober 2014 wird Roland Schilter, 50, verantwortlich für die Grosskundenbetreuung einer Firma im Facility Management, wohl nicht mehr so schnell vergessen. Denn an diesem Tag stürzte er in der Freizeit von einer Leiter und brach sich dabei beide Füsse sowie den rechten Daumen.

«Der rechte Fuss musste operiert werden, der linke wurde mit einem Gips stabilisiert», erzählt Roland Schilter. Anfang November kam er zur Rehabilitation in die Clinic Bad Ragaz, wo er fünf Wochen lang blieb.

25 October 2014 was a date that will be hard to forget for 50-year-old Roland Schilter, head of key account management at a facility management company. What started as a normal Saturday ended with him falling from a ladder and breaking both feet and his right thumb. “My right foot had to be operated on; my left stabilised with a plaster cast,” comments R ­ oland Schilter. In early November, he started a five-week inpatient rehabilitation programme in the Clinic Bad Ragaz.

«Es war super!»

«Mein Tagesablauf sieht so aus, dass ich nach dem Frühstück, so gegen halb zehn Uhr, den ersten Termin beim Physiotherapeuten habe. Von ihm werde ich massiert und erhalte ganz bestimmte Übungen, damit der Vormittag nicht immer gleich abläuft. Nach dem Mittagessen steht eine Wassertherapie auf dem Programm. Im warmen Thermalwasser versuche ich, den Fuss zu mobilisieren und mich so gut es geht zu bewegen», erzählt Roland Schilter. Die Samstagnachmittage und Sonntage stehen den Patienten zur freien Verfügung.

Wenn er über die Zeit in der Clinic Bad Ragaz spricht, kommt er ins Schwärmen: «Es war super – magnifique ! Und das fanden auch andere Patienten, mit denen ich mich unterhalten habe. Es tat einfach sehr gut, sich zu erholen und dabei nicht nur körperlich, sondern auch mental neue Kraft zu finden.

Schade, dass ich 50 Jahre alt werden musste und es solche Umstände brauchte, ehe ich eine so schöne Erfahrung machen durfte», meint Roland Schilter lachend. «Ich werde sicher mit einer gewissen Wehmut Abschied nehmen.» Zu Beginn sei er noch der Meinung gewesen, dass zwei Wochen Rehabilitation mehr als genug seien und er danach sicher schnell wieder nach Hause wolle. Doch als er gemerkt habe, wie gut die Behandlungen und die Infrastruktur der Clinic Bad Ragaz seien, habe er beschlossen, das Angebot wie vorgeschlagen zu nutzen. Für eine nachhaltige Rehabilitation sei dies das Beste.

When talking about his time in the Clinic Bad Ragaz, Roland Schilter cannot hide his enthusiasm: “It was great – ­magni­fique! And the other patients I spoke to felt the same. It was great to recover and not only gather physical strength but to find new mental strength as well. It’s just a shame that it took me 50 years and circumstances like these to discover such a wonderful experience,” laughs Roland Schilter. “I was definitely a little sad to leave.” Initially, he had thought that two weeks’ rehabilitation would be more than enough and that he would then want to return home quickly. But when he saw how good the treatments and the infrastructure at the Clinic Bad Ragaz were, he decided to use the services as suggested. This is the best option for sustainable rehabilitation.

Not a “conveyor belt hospital” The professionalism of the care staff and the medical team also played a major part in creating the overall positive impression. “The doctors who treated me were all very friendly and professional. You simply can’t compare the place to a normal hospital as even the medical area of the Clinic Bad Ragaz feels like a five-star hotel. I never felt like I was in a hospital. Everything is more relaxed and you never get the sensation of being in a soulless ‘conveyor belt hospital’ where you are nothing but a number.”

And what part of your stay in the Clinic Bad Ragaz has stayed with you? “I have the memory of a wonderful period, but also the fact that I was able to get to know new and interesting ­people either through fun chats in the bar or at the excellent jazz concert that I was able to attend,” comments Roland Schilter. “And it’s without a doubt that I will recommend the Clinic Bad Ragaz to anyone who finds themselves in a similar predicament to I did after my accident and wants outstanding medical care.”

Jede freie Minute stecken sie in die Planung und Organisation ihrer Triennale, diskutieren Zeitpläne, kontaktieren Sponsoren. Denn die Bad RagARTz, eine der weltweit grössten Kunstausstellungen unter freiem Himmel, ist ihr grossartiges Lebenswerk. Sie ist aus dem kulturellen Leben der Region, über die sie weit hinausstrahlt, nicht mehr wegzudenken.

It is a cold, grey January day in Bad Ragaz without any signs of spring. Yet despite this, the upcoming season is just around the corner for Rolf and Esther Hohmeister, and the time between now and the opening of the Bad RagARTz will just fly by. They spend their every free minute planning and organising their triennial festival, discussing schedules and contacting sponsors. After all, the Bad RagARTz is one of the world’s largest outdoor art exhibitions and their proud life’s work. It is also an intrinsic part of the cultural heritage of the region in which it is held and enjoys fame that stretches far beyond this.

Europe’s largest sculpture park From 9 May to 1 November 2015, Bad Ragaz, Bad Pfäfers and Vaduz will transform into Europe’s largest sculpture park for the sixth time and once again offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy works of art of all sorts of shapes, sizes and materials.

Rolf and Esther Hohmeister regard this as very important in a world in which life moves ever faster; where the lines between illusion and actuality, virtuality and reality become ever more blurred.

Bad RagARTz therefore aims to create an art trail that offers more actuality than illusion. Rolf and Esther Hohmeister firmly believe that happiness and art go hand in hand. As such, seeing, understanding and loving art should offer people a way back to finding themselves again. “Bad RagARTz is a work of art in itself; a brand en route to major success. Far away from the rigid limits imposed by museums, the art has escaped the isolatory ivory tower and reached out to people.” This is how Rolf Hohmeister summarised the last festival.

Was er und seine Frau in den vergangenen 15 Jahren geleistet haben, um Kunst erlebbar zu machen, weist beeindruckende Dimensionen auf: 218 Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus 26 Nationen nahmen an den letzten fünf Ausstellungen teil. Auf dem elf Kilometer langen Skulpturenweg gab es insgesamt 650 Führungen für Erwachsene und 163 für Kinder.

Bei der Bad RagARTz 2012 standen rund 2000 Tonnen Kunst in Bad Ragaz und Vaduz sowie 145 Kleinskulpturen im alten Bad Pfäfers. Die Kunstwerke hatten Transportwege von rund

60 000 Kilometern hinter sich und ruhten auf Fundamenten aus 1000 Tonnen Beton. Das Budget betrug 1,8 Millionen Franken, doch war der Einritt stets frei und wird es auch bleiben.

Ein derart grosses Projekt zu realisieren, verlangt nicht nur Organisations-, sondern mitunter auch Improvisationstalent.

Und das sogar bei der Polizei. Schmunzelnd erzählt Rolf Hohmeister: «Als wir einmal eine Skulptur der Künstlerin Beverly Pepper durch den San-Bernardino-Tunnel transportieren mussten, stellten wir fest, dass die Ladung zu breit war.

Was also tun? Ich rief die Bündner Kantonspolizei an, und die war doch tatsächlich so hilfsbereit, den Tunnel zwölf Minuten lang für den Gegenverkehr zu sperren.»

Hilfsbereite Behörden Auch mit der italienischen Polizei hatte das Ehepaar Hohmeister schon Kontakt. «Wir waren einmal für die Bad RagARTz in Pietrasanta in der nördlichen Toskana unterwegs. Der Name der Stadt – heiliger Stein –

Rolf Hohmeister chuckles as he says: “Once, we had to transport a sculpture by the artist Beverly Pepper through the San Bernardino tunnel and suddenly realised that the load was too wide. But what could we do? I called the Graubünden cantonal police, who were only too happy to help and closed the tunnel to oncoming traffic for a whole 12 minutes.”

Helpful authorities The Hohmeisters have also had contact with the Italian police.

“We once travelled to Pietrasanta in northern Tuscany in relation to Bad RagARTz. Even the town’s name, which translates as ‘holy stone’, suggests the importance of marble working both here and in the neighbouring city of Carrara. Unfortunately, we left our car in a no-parking zone and promptly received a 29 euro fine,” commented Rolf Hohmeister. “I put 30 euros in an envelope and sent it to the Pietrasanta police.”

Rolf thus presumed that the matter had been resolved and was astonished to receive a letter a few days later in which an official thanked him kindly for paying the fine. “Clearly foreigners visiting Italy don’t usually follow the rules,” Rolf Hohmeister suspects. “And as the fine was only 29 euros, the police had even sent me my change by taping a one-euro coin into the envelope.”

As we are talking about the police: the Hohmeisters no longer have to get permits for the Bad RagARTz; the exhibition has long since been part of the Bad Ragaz life.

“We simply have to comply with laws and regulations,” comments Esther Hohmeister. “For example, by ensuring that buses can get through every where and that we don’t impede wheelchair users.”

«Ich habe dann 30 Euro in ein Kuvert gesteckt und an die Polizei von Pietrasanta geschickt.» Für ihn war die Sache damit erledigt. Umso mehr staunte er, als er eines Tages einen Brief erhielt, in dem sich die Beamten mit freundlichen Worten für das Bezahlen der Busse bedankten. «Offenbar nehmen es Ausländer in Italien damit nicht so genau», vermutet Rolf Hohmeister. «Und da die Busse nur 29 Euro betrug, hatten die Polizisten gleich noch eine Euro-Münze Retourgeld ins Kuvert gesteckt und mit Klebestreifen befestigt.»

Apropos Polizei: Für die Bad RagARTz müssen Hohmeisters keine Bewilligungen mehr einholen. Die Ausstellung gehört längst zu Bad Ragaz. «Wir haben lediglich die Gesetze und Vorschriften einzuhalten», sagt Esther Hohmeister, «also beispielsweise dafür zu sorgen, dass Autobusse überall durchkommen und Rollstuhlfahrer nicht blockiert werden.»

Das Ehepaar rechnet erneut mit grossem Andrang, auch und vor allem an der Eröffnung am 9. Mai. «Wir erwarten 10 000 Besucher», sagt Rolf Hohmeister. «Und wir werden unsere Schau nicht mit einer sterilen Vernissage eröffnen, sondern mit einem grossen Fest. Am 15. August gibt es dann die Dorf-Art, an der die Künstlerinnen und Künstler mit der Bad Ragazer Bevölkerung, darunter natürlich auch den Kindern, in Kontakt kommen sollen.» Zur Bad RagARTz gehören ausserdem Konzerte, Literaturtouren und ein Philosophicum am 13. Juni.

Dass die Gemeinde und das Grand Resort Bad Ragaz dieses Jahr 175 Jahre Thermalwasser feiert (siehe S. 16), wird man auch an der Bad RagARTz merken, steht sie doch ganz im Zeichen der Farbe Blau. Für Rolf und Esther Hohmeister symbolisiert Blau nicht nur das Wasser, sondern auch den Himmel, die Zukunft, den Frieden und die Jugend – wichtige Begriffe in einer Zeit der Gewalt und von weitverbreitetem Pessimismus.

The Hohmeisters are once again expecting large throngs of visitors, especially at the opening on 9 May 2015. “We’re ­expecting 10,000 visitors,” Rolf Hohmeister comments. “And we won’t open our exhibition with a stiff vernissage, but with a huge party. Dorf-Art (“Village-Style Art”) will then be held on 15 August 2015 and give the people of Bad Ragaz, including the children of course, the chance to meet the artists.” Bad RagARTz also involves concerts, literary tours and a philosophicum on 13 June 2015.

This year, the municipality and the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz are celebrating the 175th anniversary of the thermal water (see p. 16). This is also being commemorated by the Bad ­RagARTz, which is dedicated to the colour blue. For Rolf and Esther Hohmeister, blue does not just symbolise the water but also the sky, the future, peace and youth – important terms in an age often dominated by violence and wide-spread pes­ simism.

Unweit des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz liegt tief im Innern des Berges eine faszinierende Tunnelwelt verborgen – der Versuchsstollen Hagerbach. Auch bei unseren Gästen erfreut er sich grosser Beliebtheit.

Hidden deep in the heart of the mountain, not far from the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is a fascinating underground world – the Hagerbach Test Gallery. This is extremely popular among our guests.

Die Schweiz ist ein Land des Tunnelbaus. Im Moment wird gerade der 57 Kilometer lange Gotthard-Basistunnel vollendet, der Ende 2016 in Betrieb gehen soll. Möglich ist solch ein gigantisches Projekt nur mit modernster Technik. Sie unter realistischen Bedingungen weiterzuentwickeln, war das Ziel des Tunnelbau-Ingenieurs Rudolf Amberg, als er 1970 zwischen Bad Ragaz und dem Walensee den Versuchsstollen Hagerbach in den Berg treiben liess.

Switzerland is a country that is famed for its tunnels. Work is currently coming to an end on the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel, which should open in late 2016. Such a huge project is only made possible by the latest technology. To develop such technology under realistic conditions was the aim of the tunnel construction engineer Rudolf Amberg when he had the Hagerbach Test Gallery cut into the mountain between Bad Ragaz and Lake Walensee in 1970.

sondern auch als Filmkulisse und Eventlocation. Der Versuchsstollen Hagerbach verfügt über ein Restaurant und Seminarräume, ab und zu wird tief im Inneren des Berges sogar geheiratet.

Eine kleine Grubenbahn bringt die Besucher in die verschiedenen Stollenabschnitte, wo sie besichtigen können, was dort alles passiert. So hat beispielsweise die Rhätische Bahn einen 50 Meter langen Tunnelabschnitt originalgetreu mit Gleis und Oberleitung nachbauen lassen, um die Sanierung ihrer «echten» Tunnels im 1:1-Modell auszutesten und zu optimieren.

Kino im Eisenbahnwagen Im Versuchsstollen Hagerbach haben sich zahlreiche Unternehmen wie ROWA, Sika, Implenia, Aco, Elkuch und Amberg Engineering eingemietet, um hier neue Techniken des Tunnelbaus zu erproben und Materialprüfungen vorzunehmen.

Und bis vor drei Jahren nutzten Feuerwehren aus ganz Europa den Stollen, um an Autowracks und ausrangierten Eisenbahnwagen die Tunnelbrandbekämpfung zu üben. Heute dienen die Wagen als Kino, in dem die Besucher Wissenswertes über das Verhalten bei einem Tunnelbrand erfahren.

Einmaliges Erlebnis Der Besuch des Versuchsstollens Hagerbach ist für Meeting-, Incentive- und Eventgäste des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz eine hochwillkommene Abwechslung und erfreut sich auch bei Individualgästen grosser Beliebtheit. Es hat nämlich seinen ganz besonderen Reiz, sich mit einem Pressluftbohrer in der Hand und ausgerüstet mit Helm und Gehörschutz als Tunnelbauer zu versuchen, ein Sprengloch in den Fels zu bohren und danach an einem Ort zu stehen, wo noch nie zuvor ein Mensch gestanden hat.

Die Besuche finden nach telefonischer Anmeldung in der Regel gruppenweise statt. Möglich sind auch individuelle Führungen, die je nach Wunsch 60, 90 oder 120 Minuten dauern und auch in englischer Sprache angeboten werden. Im Restaurant Hagerbach finden zudem das ganze Jahr über viele öffentliche Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Partys, Zirkusvorführungen, Cabaret- und Burlesqueshows sowie kulinarische Themenabende statt. For example, Rhaetian Railway had a true-to-original 50-metre tunnel section built with a track and aerial line in order to test and optimise the process of renovating its “real” tunnels using a 1:1 model.

Cinematic train carriages Several companies such as ROWA, Sika, Implenia, Aco, Elkuch and Amberg Engineering have leased areas in the Hagerbach Test Gallery in order to trial new tunnel construction methods and conduct material tests. And until three years ago, fire brigades from all over Europe used the tunnels to practice firefighting on car wrecks and decommissioned train carriages.

Today, the train carriages are used as a cinema and show visitors interesting films about how to behave in case of a tunnel fire.

A unique experience A visit to the Hagerbach Test Gallery provides a welcome change for Grand Resort Bad Ragaz meeting, incentive and event guests, as well as being popular with private guests.

There is simply something appealing about donning a helmet and ear defenders, picking up a pneumatic drill and trying to drill a blast hole in the rock as a tunnel constructor before standing somewhere that no man has ever stood before.

Visits generally take place in groups following prior booking by telephone. However, individual 60-, 90- or 120-minute tours (including in English) are also available. The Restaurant Hagerbach hosts many public events such as concerts, parties, circus performances, cabaret and burlesque shows and themed culinary evenings all year round. Es gibt sie tatsächlich noch, die echten Geheimtipps. Der Chapfensee ist einer davon. Der idyllische See liegt oberhalb von Mels in Richtung Vermol und ist mit dem Auto gut erreichbar. Die letzten paar Hundert Meter werden zu Fuss zurückgelegt, und dann offenbart der See, wunderschön eingebettet in ein geschütztes Naturreservat, seine ganze Pracht.

Die Bergkulisse im Hintergrund ist malerisch, spezielle Feuerstellen – meist sogar mit Holzvorrat – laden zum Picknick ein, und auf der kurzen Wanderung um den See kann man den Fischern zuschauen, die hier insbesondere Bach- und Regenbogenforellen aus dem glasklaren Wasser ziehen. Der Blick vom Aussichtspunkt Chapfenstein hinunter ins Seeztal, die östliche Ebene des Walensees, ist so grossartig wie die ursprüngliche, wildromantische Moorlandschaft, die den See umgibt. Eigentlich ist der Chapfensee ein Stausee, der durch einen Zufluss und zwei grosse Stauwehren mit Wasser bewirtschaftet wird. Doch das ist kaum noch erkennbar. Für die Besucher ist der See Glanz- und Mittelpunkt eines Stücks Natur, das einem in seiner einzigartigen Schönheit für immer in Erinnerung bleibt.

There really are still some well-kept secrets. The Chapfensee is one of them. This idyllic lake is situated above Mels on the way to Vermol and is easy to reach by car. The last few hundred metres are covered on foot, and then the lake reveals itself in all its glory – nestling beautifully in a protected nature reserve. With a picturesque mountain backdrop and special fire pits – most of them stocked with firewood – it’s the perfect place for a picnic. A short walk takes you to the lake where you can watch the anglers as they pull brown and rainbow trout from the crystalclear waters. The view from the Chapfenstein view point down towards the Seez valley, the eastern plain of the Walensee, is just as magnificent as the primordial, wildly romantic moorland that surrounds the lake. The Chapfensee is actually a reservoir, which is fed by a tributary and two large weirs – not that you would recognise it as such. For visitors, the lake is the highlight and centerpiece of a part of nature which creates a lasting memory, thanks to its unique beauty.

Vom Grand Resort Bad Ragaz aus ist es, zum Beispiel mit dem E-Bike, über Pfäfers, Vättis und Gigerwald bequem erreichbar. Der Weg ins abgeschiedene Hochtal führt auch über die Staumauer des Gigerwaldsees. Hier ist das ­Bergrestaurant Gigerwald ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. Ebenfalls lohnend ist der Besuch der winzigen ehemaligen Walsersiedlung St. Martin am westlichen Ende des Gigerwaldsees. Der Weiler mit seinem nur im Sommer geöffneten rustikalen Gasthaus sowie das denkmalgeschützte Kirchlein ­ St. Martin waren einst Mittelpunkt im Leben der aus dem Oberwallis eingewanderten freien Walser, die ihre Siedlung Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts aufgaben.

The Calfeisen valley, in the midst of a wild, imposing mountain landscape, is in the municipality of Pfäfers. It is easily reached from the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, for example by electric bike, via Pfäfers, Vättis and Gigerwald. The path to the remote high valley also leads over the dam on the Gigerwaldsee, where the Gigerwald mountain restaurant is a favourite destination. It is also worth visiting the tiny former Walser settlement of St. Martin, at the western end of the Gigerwaldsee.

The hamlet with its rustic inn, which is only open in the summer, and the chapel of St. Martin, which is protected as a historic monument, were once central to the lives of the free Walser migrants from the Upper ­Valais, who left their settlement in the mid17th century.

Die zumeist erstaunlich flache Strecke von Bad Ragaz nach Thusis ist eine Kultur- und Genussroute, die Rad- und E-BikeFahrer unweigerlich in ihren Bann zieht. Ein Höhepunkt der beliebten Rheinroute ist schon die Fahrt durch die Bündner Herrschaft – mal ganz nah am Rhein, mal quer durch die malerischen, in Rebberge eingebetteten Dörfer. Nach Chur geht es weiter dem Rhein entlang über Felsberg nach Reichenau, wo Vorder- und Hinterrhein ineinander verschmelzen. Es folgt die Einfahrt ins Domleschg, den blühenden Garten Graubündens, bewacht von Burgen und dem Piz Beverin. Auf dem Hochplateau mit den verträumten Dörfern Bonaduz und Rhäzüns werden noch einmal faszinierende Landschaften durchfahren, ehe die einzigartige Tour in Thusis endet.

The stretch from Bad Ragaz to Thusis, which is for the most part surprisingly flat, is a cultural route and leisure trail which invariably casts a spell over cyclists and riders of electric bikes. A highlight of this popular route along the Rhine is the journey through the Bündner Herrschaft – sometimes skirting the river, sometimes passing through the picturesque villages nestling in the vineyards. After Chur the route continues along the Rhine via Felsberg to Reichenau, where Upper and Lower Rhine merge into one another. Then you enter Domleschg, known as “the garden of Graubünden”, guarded by castles and the Piz Beverin. On the high plateau, with the sleepy villages of Bonaduz and Rhäzüns, the unique tour passes yet again through fascinating scenery before ending in Thusis.

The most popular items naturally also depend on the time of year. But whether summer or winter, the same rapid speed is required if the guests at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz are to enjoy the products’ full and outstanding quality.

Was gerade gefragt ist, hängt immer auch etwas von der Jahreszeit ab. Doch egal, ob Sommer oder Winter – schnell muss es gehen, wenn die Ware in hervorragender Qualität die Gäste des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz erfreuen soll.

Alles muss klappen «Wir verkaufen Ware mit einer massiv beschränkten Haltbarkeit», sagt Jann Rageth. «Zeit ist deshalb gleichbedeutend mit Qualität. Fangfrischer Fisch hat beispielsweise nur eine Haltbarkeit von zwei bis sechs Tagen, es muss beim Transport also alles wie am Schnürchen klappen, zumal an der Logistik mehrere Partner beteiligt sind.» Die Geschwindigkeit hat natürlich ihren Preis. «Werden wir beispielsweise mit lebenden Lobstern aus Boston beliefert», so Jann Rageth, «zahlen wir dafür siebenmal mehr als für den Transport tiefgekühlter Ware aus Vietnam.»

Was die Rageth Comestibles AG beziehen kann, ist also immer auch von der Verkehrslage abhängig. «In den meisten Fällen lassen sich zwar alternative Vertriebskanäle nutzen, aber als beispielsweise 2010 der isländische Vulkan Eyjafjallajökull den Flugverkehr lahmlegte, bekamen wir einige Tage lang keine Ware aus Island. Ähnliches erleben wir, wenn ein Schneesturm die Flughäfen im Nordosten der USA heimsucht.»

Beeinträchtigt werden kann die Lieferkapazität allerdings auch durch Umweltkatstrophen wie Tankerunglücke oder wenn ein Bestand überfischt ist. «Davon ist zwar nur eine kleine Gruppe von Meerestieren bedroht, aber es kommt immer wieder einmal zu Importregulierungen oder sogar -ver-

When transported, this means that everything has to run like clockwork, especially as several logistics partners are usually involved.” Speed naturally comes at a cost. “For instance, we pay seven times more for the transportation of live lobsters from Boston than for that of frozen goods from Vietnam,” explains Jann Rageth.

It also depends on the transport situation what products Rageth Comestibles AG can obtain. “Although it’s usually possible to employ alternative sales channels, that isn’t always the case. For example, when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano grounded all flights back in 2010, we didn’t receive any goods from Iceland for several days. A similar problem ensues if a snow storm hits the airports in north-east America.”

However, delivery capacities can also be affected by environmental disasters such as tanker spills or if stocks have been overfished. “Despite only a small group of sea creatures being endangered, import regulations and even bans are sometimes introduced, as was the case with sturgeon in the Black and Caspian Seas when their stocks were decimated by the high demand for caviar.”

«Das heisst, dass wir die Ware schon hier am Lager haben müssen, wenn sie bestellt wird», erklärt Jann Rageth. «Angesichts der hohen Verderblichkeit der Ware ist das natürlich mit einem hohen Geschäftsrisiko verbunden und man sitzt gewissermassen ständig auf glühenden Kohlen.» Doch die Tatsache, dass der Familienbetrieb nun schon fast 90 Jahre existiert, beweist, dass man die Wünsche der Kunden nicht nur sehr gut kennt, sondern auch stets zu deren voller Zufriedenheit zu erfüllen weiss – allen Schneestürmen und Vulkanausbrüchen zum Trotz.

With 23-year-old Fabio Galizia as his chef de partie, Roland Schmid also has a major young talent on his team. Wolfsbarsch, Brokkoli, Tomate und Eierschwämme für vier Personen

Sea bass, broccoli, tomato and chanterelles – serves four

Wolfsbarschfilet: 4 portionierte, entgrätete und geschuppte Wolfsbarschfilets von ca.

70 g, 20 ml Erdnussöl, 10 g Butter, Salz, Pfeffer aus der Mühle.

Wolfsbarschfilet mit Salz würzen und in Erdnussöl auf der Haut glasig braten. Zum Schluss eine kleine Butterflocke dazugeben. Fisch mit Pfeffer würzen.

Sea bass fillet: 4 sea bass fillet portions, each weighing approx. 70 g, 20 ml peanut oil, 10 g butter, ground salt and pepper Season the sea bass with salt and fry in the peanut oil skin-side down until translucent. Finally, add a small flake of butter and season the fish with pepper.

Eierschwämmeschaumsauce: 25 g gehackte Schalotten, 75 g Eierschwämme gewaschen, 100 g kräftige Bouillon, 100 g Rahm, 20 g geschlagener Rahm, Salz, Pfeffer aus der Mühle.

Schalotten in Butter andünsten, Eierschwämme hinzugeben und leicht salzen. Bouillon und Rahm dazugeben und 3 Minuten köcheln lassen.

Sauce in einen Mixbecher geben und sehr fein mixen, durch Sieb passieren. Kurz vor Gebrauch Schlagrahm dazugeben und mit dem Mixstab alles kurz aufmixen.

Chanterelle foam: 25 g finely chopped shallots, 75 g washed chanterelles, 100 g strong stock, 100 g fresh cream, 20 g whipped cream, ground salt and pepper Sauté the shallots in the butter, add the chanterelles and lightly season with salt. Add the stock and the fresh cream and simmer for 3 minutes. Pour the sauce into a mixing bowl and blend until smooth, pass the sauce through a sieve. Add the whipped cream just before serving and blend everything together briefly with the stick blender.

Gebratene Eierschwämme: 10 ml Olivenöl, 100 g kleine Eierschwämme, 10 g Butter, 10 g Schnittlauch, Salz, Pfeffer aus der Mühle.

Pilze am Stiel mit einem kleinen Messer abschaben und das Ende abschneiden. Pilze unter fliessend kaltem Wasser kurz waschen. Pilze in einer sehr heissen Pfanne 2 bis 3 Minuten in Olivenöl braten und mit Salz würzen. Zum Schluss eine kleine Butterflocke, Pfeffer und Schnittlauch dazugeben. Pilze auf ein Küchenpapier geben und sofort anrichten.

Brokkoli-Ecrasé (Stampf): 1 Stück Brokkoli, 10 g Olivenöl, 10 g Schalotten fein gehackt, 80 g Crème fraîche, Salz, Pfeffer, Peperoncino.

Brokkoliröschen vom Stiel lösen und halbieren. Alles mit einer Prise Salz in einen Dampfdrucktopf geben. Den Topf bei höchster Stufe auf den Herd stellen, bis das Ventil ganz oben ist, dann für 3 Minuten auf mittlere Hitze stellen (Stufe 4 bis 5). Den Topf unter fliessendem Wasser abkühlen lassen und wenn möglich Crushed Ice in den Topf geben. Brokkoli auf ein Sieb geben und durch eine Kartoffelpresse drücken. Schalotten in Olivenöl glasig dünsten, den Stampf sowie die Crème fraîche hinzugeben. Das Ecrasé mit Salz und Pfeffer und etwas Peperoncino abschmecken.

Tomatencreme: 5 Stück reife Eiertomaten, 1 dl Olivenöl, 10 g Zucker, 10 g Salz, je 1 Stiel Rosmarin/Thymian/Salbei, 1 Knoblauchzehe, je 10 g geröstete Haselnüsse, Walnüsse, Pinienkerne (3 Minuten bei 200 Grad im Ofen), 30 ml Olivenöl, 20 g Sherryessig, Salz, Pfeffer aus der Mühle.

Eiertomaten halbieren und mit der Schnittfläche nach oben in eine ofenfeste Form geben, mit Salz und Zucker würzen und mit Olivenöl beträufeln. Rosmarin, Thymian, Salbei und Knoblauch grob hacken und alles auf die Toma-

Wash the chanterelles briefly under cold, running water. Fry the chanterelles in olive oil in a very hot pan for 2 to 3 minutes and season with salt. Finally, add a small flake of butter, pepper and chives. Tip the chanterelles onto kitchen paper and serve immediately.

Broccoli mash: 1 head of broccoli, 10 g olive oil, 10 g finely chopped shallots, 80 g crème fraiche, salt, pepper and pepperoncino Separate the broccoli florets from the stem and halve them. Put everything into a pressure cooker with a pinch of salt. Place the pressure cooker onto the stove on the highest setting until the valve is fully open, then turn down to the medium setting (level 4 to 5) for 3 minutes. Cool the pressure cooker under running water, if possible adding crushed ice. Drain the broccoli in a colander and then press it through a potato ricer.

Steam the shallots in olive oil until transparent, then add the broccoli and the crème fraîche. Season the mash with salt, pepper and a little pepperoncino.

Tomato cream: 5 ripe plum tomatoes, 1 dl olive oil, 10 g sugar, 10 g salt, 1 sprig each of rosemary, thyme and sage, 1 clove of garlic, 10 g each of roasted hazelnuts, walnuts and pine nuts (3 minutes at 200°C in the oven), 30 ml olive oil, 20 g sherry vinegar, ground salt and pepper Halve the plum tomatoes and place in an ovenproof dish with the cut surface upwards, season with salt and sugar, drizzle with olive oil. Roughly chop the rosemary, thyme, sage and garlic and sprinkle onto the tomatoes.

Place the tin in the oven at 150°C and stew for 45 minutes. Remove the herbs from the stewed tomatoes and blend them with the olive oil, pine nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and vinegar until smooth. Finally, season the cream with salt, pepper and a little vinegar before heating everything in a pan and serving.

Tomatenchutneyzigarre Tomatenchutney: 4 reife Eiertomaten, 20 ml Olivenöl, 10 g fein gehackte Schalotten, 10 g Ketchup, 10 g Tomatenpüree, 20 ml Bouillon, Salz, Pfeffer aus der Mühle, Tabasco, Ingwer, Sherryessig.

Eiertomaten vom Strunk befreien und am Boden die Tomate mit einem Messer kreuzförmig einritzen, dann für 20 Sekunden in kochendes Salzwasser geben und danach gleich im Eiswasser abkühlen. Tomaten schälen, vierteln und vom Kerngehäuse befreien. Aus den Filets kleine Würfel (ca. 3 x 3 cm) schneiden. Concasse auf Küchenpapier legen und zur Seite stellen.

Olivenöl in einem Topf erhitzen, gehackte Schalotten dazugeben und alles glasig dünsten. Ketchup, Tomatenpüree und Bouillon hinzugeben und alles leicht reduzieren lassen. Die Tomatenwürfel dazugeben und ca. 15 Minuten auf kleiner Flamme köcheln lassen (Masse muss dick sein). Das Chutney zum Schluss mit etwas Salz, Pfeffer, geriebenem Ingwer, Tabasco und Essig abschmecken. Die Masse im Kühlschrank abkühlen lassen.

Zigarre: 2 Filoteigblätter, 20 ml Vollei, 100 g fertiges Tomatenchutney, Fritteuse zum Frittieren.

Filoteig in Quadrate von 12 x 12 cm schneiden und in Folie packen. 4 Quadrate nebeneinander legen und leicht mit Vollei bestreichen, auf jedes Quadrat wieder ein neues Quadrat legen.

Je 1 Esslöffel vom Chutney auf ein Küchenpapier legen.

Auf jedes der 4 Quadrate einen Strich Chutney ca. 2 cm breit geben, dabei je ein 1 cm Platz an den beiden Seiten lassen.

Freie Flächen dünn mit Vollei bestreichen, dabei nicht zu viel Ei nehmen.

Beide Seiten nach innen einklappen und dann wie eine Zigarre aufrollen.

Die Filoteigzigarre für 3 Minuten in der 160 Grad heissen Fritteuse goldgelb frittieren und dann leicht salzen, diagonal halbieren und je zwei halbe Zigarren pro Person geben.

Frittierter Rucola: 50 g frischer Rucola, Salz, Fritteuse zum Frittieren.

Rucola waschen, trocken schleudern und vom Stiel befreien, dann bei 160 Grad für ca. 30 Sekunden knusprig frittieren und auf ein Küchenpapier geben.

Anrichten: Das Brokkoli-Ecrasé in einen Ring geben, der mittig in einem heissen Pastateller platziert ist. Mit dem Löffel etwas Tomatencreme rundherum geben. Den Eierschwämmeschaum leicht über die Tomatencreme nappieren. Danach die gebratenen Eierschwämme auf dem Schaum verteilen.

Das Wolfsbarschfilet mit der knusprigen Haut nach oben auf den Stampf setzen. Etwas Rucolafrit auf die Fischhaut geben und die Tomatenchutneyzigarren mit der Schnittfläche zum Gast an den Fisch stellen.

Die Kreation des jungen Kochtalents ist auch optisch ein Genuss !

Tomato chutney cigars Tomato chutney: 4 ripe plum tomatoes, 20 ml olive oil, 10 g finely chopped shallots, 10 g ketchup, 10 g tomato purée, 20 ml stock, ground salt and pepper, tabasco sauce, ginger and sherry vinegar Remove the stalks from the plum tomatoes and score a cross in their base with a knife, place them into boiling, salted water for 20 seconds then instantly cool in ice water. Peel the tomatoes, quarter and core them. Cut the fillets into small cubes (approx. 3×3 cm). Tip the concasse onto kitchen paper and put aside.

Heat the olive oil in a pan, add the chopped shallots and steam until transparent. Add the ketchup, tomato purée and stock and leave to reduce slightly. Add the diced tomatoes and simmer over a low heat for approx. 15 minutes (the mixture must be thick). Finally, season the chutney with a little salt, pepper, grated ginger, Tabasco sauce and vinegar to taste. Leave the chutney to cool in the refrigerator.

Cigars: 2 sheets of filo pastry, 20 ml whole egg, 100 g ready-made tomato chutney, deep fat fryer Cut the filo pastry into squares measuring 12×12 cm and wrap them in a plastic film. Place 4 squares next to each other and lightly brush them with whole egg. Place a new square onto each square.

Take 1 tablespoon of chutney per square and place it on a sheet of kitchen paper. Add a streak of chutney approx. 2 cm wide to each of the 4 squares, leaving a 1-cm gap on each side.

Lightly brush the free areas with whole egg, being careful not to apply too much. Fold in the two sides, then roll up like a cigar. Fry the filo pastry cigars in the deep fat fryer at 160°C for 3 minutes until golden yellow, then lightly season with salt, halve them diagonally and serve two halves per person.

Deep fried rocket: 50 g fresh rocket, salt, deep fat fryer Wash and spin dry the rocket, remove the stems, then deep fry at 160°C for approx. 30 seconds until crispy. Place the rocket on kitchen paper.

Serve: Place the broccoli mash in a ring in the centre of a hot pasta dish. Use a spoon to swipe a little tomato cream around the mash. Lightly drizzle the chanterelle foam over the tomato cream, then sprinkle the fried chanterelles onto the foam. Place the sea bass fillet on the mash, crispy skin up.

Dress the skin with a little deep fried rocket and place the tomato chutney cigars on the fish with the cut edge facing the guest.

In Munich, Sandra Klotz learnt how to assess a beer’s quality.

Sommeliers bringt man vor allem mit Wein und Tafelwasser in Verbindung. Mittlerweile gibt es sie aber auch für Bier. Sandra Klotz, Restaurantleiterin der Zollstube, ist eine von ihnen. Jetzt überrascht sie mit einem ganz besonderen Bier – gebraut aus Thermalwasser!

Sommeliers are generally associated with wine and mineral water, but there are also those who specialise in beer. Sandra Klotz, restaurant manager of the Zollstube, is one of them. Now she has introduced a special new beer to the menu that is brewed using thermal water.

Sandra Klotz kennen und schätzen viele Gäste des Grand ­Resort Bad Ragaz als langjährige Leiterin des Restaurants Zollstube. Was sie vielleicht nicht wissen: Die Liechtensteinerin ist auch Diplom-Biersommelière. «Die Ausbildung gibt es schon seit 2004 und findet in München statt», erzählt sie.

«Der Lehrgang ist sehr streng und intensiv. Denn von der Bierzusammensetzung bis zur Brau- und Ausschanktechnik wird alles behandelt. Degustationen gehören natürlich auch dazu. Allerdings nur in homöopathischen Dosen !»

Many Grand Resort Bad Ragaz guests know and respect ­Sandra Klotz as the long-time manager of the Restaurant ­Zollstube.

What they may not know though is that the Liechtensteiner is also a certified beer sommelier. “The certification programme has been around since 2004 and is available in Munich,” she explains. “The course is highly challenging and intensive. It covers everything from beer composition to brewing and ­dispensing techniques. Tastings are also an important part, obviously, but only in healthy doses!”

Kein Bier aus Massenproduktion Zu ihren Aufgaben als Biersommelière gehört es nun, sich über neue Bierkreationen zu informieren und auf die Wünsche der Gäste einzugehen, aber auch, sich mit anderen Biersommeliers zu treffen und auszutauschen. In der Zoll­ stube hat Sandra Klotz derzeit rund 17 Biere im Angebot.

«Das kann saisonal variieren, und wenn ein Bier nicht so geschätzt wird, nehme ich es aus dem Sortiment. Was die Gäste mögen, ist nämlich ganz unterschiedlich, sie sind mal mehr, mal weniger experimentierfreudig, und oft hängen die Vorlieben auch vom Wetter oder der Jahreszeit ab. Im Sommer schätzt man eher ein leichtes, im Winter dagegen ein starkes, dunkles Bier. Doch genau diese Abwechslung ist das Schöne an meinem Beruf.» Ihre Biere stammen vor allem aus der Schweiz und umliegenden Ländern. «Ich achte bei mei-

Die Frage, was ein gutes Bier ist, lässt sich allerdings gar nicht so einfach beantworten. «Gut ist ein Bier dann, wenn es schmeckt und keinen Fehler hat. Also beispielsweise nicht nach Butter schmeckt, sofern das nicht – wie beim Pilsner Urquell – gewollt ist.» Der Alkoholgehalt kann beim Bier übri­ gens stark variieren, im Moment liegt die Obergrenze bei 67,5 Volumenprozent.

Qualität steht zuoberst Besonders stolz ist Sandra Klotz darauf, dass sie nun ihr ­eigenes Bier anbieten kann – gebraut aus dem Wasser der Thermalquelle in der Taminaschlucht. «Es ist ein Spezialbier, denn das Thermalwasser hat einen hohen Anteil an Carbona­ ten und einen geringen an Kalium, es eignet sich also nicht für jede Biersorte.» Anlass für die Kreation eines eigenen Biers war das Jubiläum «Bad Ragaz feiert 175 Jahre Thermal­ wasser». Zur Eröffnung des Kunstevents Bad RagARTz soll es das erste Mal ausgeschenkt werden. Hergestellt wurden ­200 Liter, für die insgesamt 400 Gramm Hopfen nötig waren.

Den Auftrag, das Bier zu brauen, erhielt das kleine Unter­ nehmen Sevibräu im nicht weit entfernten Sevelen, wo ­Andrea und Dominik De Gregorio mit viel Liebe dazu bei­ tragen, die Biervielfalt in der Schweiz zu fördern und bereits zu den Lieferanten der Zollstube zählen. Ihre Philosophie: «Qualität kommt vor Quantität und steht immer im Vorder­ grund.» Das gilt sicher auch für das neue Bier aus dem ­Wasser der Bad Ragazer Thermalquelle.

The question of what makes a good beer is not an easy one to answer. “A beer is good if it tastes nice and has nothing wrong with it. For example, beer shouldn’t taste of butter – unless this is intentional like with Pilsner Urquell of course.” The alcohol content of beer can also vary greatly, with the world’s strongest beer currently at 67.5 percent alcohol by volume.

Quality is king Sandra Klotz is particularly proud of the fact that she can now offer her very own beer – brewed using thermal source water from the Tamina gorge. “It’s a special beer as the thermal ­water contains a high level of carbonates and a low level of potassium, meaning that it’s not suitable for all types of beer.”

The beer was created to mark the 175th anniversary of the thermal water pipeline and will be served for the first time at the opening of the Bad RagARTz sculpture festival. 200 litres were produced, for which 400 grams of hops were required.

The task of brewing the beer was given to the small company Sevibräu in the nearby town of Sevelen. Andrea and Dominik De Gregorio are devoted to the promotion of beer diversity in Switzerland and have already supplied beer to the Zollstube for many years. Their philosophy: “Quality comes before quantity and is always the main focus.” And this also applies to the new beer brewed using Bad Ragaz thermal water.

His “best buddy”, New Zealander Sir Bob Charles, also loves Bad Ragaz. He enjoyed his hour of glory here on 6 July 2012 when he beat his age of 76 by a colossal ten shots. A new tour record! “I’ve had a few amazing days in my career. Today was one of them. I felt young again,” Charles commented after his spectacular performance.

All the tour professionals have a great time during their week in Bad Ragaz. “For many of us, this is the best week of the year,” comments Paul Wesselingh, Bad Ragaz champion 2013.

19th Swiss Seniors Open The European Senior Tour will be held in Bad Ragaz for the 19th time from 3 to 5 July 2015. This year though, the organisers have introduced two major changes: the tournament will now be called the Swiss Seniors Open and the prize money will be increased by EUR 20,000 to a total of EUR 300,000, with EUR 45,000 going ­to the winner. “The new name is better suited to the event because it’s the only Swiss tournament on the Euro­ pean Senior Tour,” explains Ralph Polligkeit, President of the Organising Committee. Additionally, the tourna­ ment’s new name will further highlight the event’s ­international character. 72 of the world’s best profes­ sional golfers over the age of 50 will tee off at the tour­ nament. The Swiss Seniors Open is the longest-running event on the European Senior Tour, which is held on the same course every year. Zweitausend Bäume und vier Seen Für das Design der Anlage verantwortlich zeichnete der renommierte Schweizer Golfplatzarchitekt Peter Harradine, dessen Vater Donald bereits den 18-Loch-Parcours des GC Bad Ragaz entworfen hatte. Knapp 2000 Bäume und Büsche liess Peter Harradine auf dem Gelände des GC Heidiland pflanzen. Massive Erdverschiebungen waren notwendig, um die Fairways mittels künstlich errichteter Hügel zu trennen.

Zudem platzierte Harradine einen künstlich angelegten See in der Mitte des Platzes. Der Fluppibach, der vor dem neunten Grün die Spielbahn kreuzt, war vorhanden.

Ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Anlage ist der grosszügig ausgestaltete Übungsbereich. Auf der Driving Range stehen 21 gedeckte und 50 Rasenabschlagplätze sowie ein grosses Putting Green und ein Approaching-Grün mit Übungsbunker zur Verfügung. Die perfekte Infrastruktur für die 2005 gegründete Golf Academy. Zur Anlage gehört ein Klubhaus mit Golfbistro, Sekretariat, Golfshop und Garderoben.

Two thousand trees and four lakes The course was designed by the prestigious Swiss golf course architect Peter Harradine, whose father Donald designed the 18-hole course at Golf Club Bad Ragaz. Peter Harradine had almost 2,000 trees and bushes planted on the Golf Club Heidiland site. Huge amounts of earth had to be shifted to create the artificial hills between the fairways, and Harradine also created an artificial lake in the centre of the course. The Fluppibach stream, which crosses the fairway just before the ninth green, was an existing, natural feature.

An important part of the facility is the huge practice area. The driving range has 21 covered and 50 grass tees as well as a large putting green and an approaching green with a practice bunker. All in all, the perfect infrastructure for the Golf Academy founded in 2005. The facility also includes a club house with a Golf Bistro, an office, a Golf Shop and cloak rooms.

In den ersten beiden Monaten nach der Platzeröffnung wurden vier Hole-in-One gespielt. «Seit 2009 listen wir nur noch die in Turnieren erzielten Asse auf», sagt der Präsident. 27 waren es in den letzten sechs Saisons gewesen.

Stolz ist man im GC Heidiland auf den hervorragend gepfleg­ ten Platz. Da die Anlage ebenso wie der 18-Loch Champion­ ship Course des GC Bad Ragaz zum Grand Resort Bad Ragaz gehört, können bei der Golfplatzpflege alle Synergien ge­ nutzt werden; so pflegt die Greenkeeper-Equipe beide Golfwie auch die Parkanlagen des gesamten Resorts, und auch der Maschinenpark wird für alle Unterhaltsarbeiten gemein­ sam verwendet. Der Präsident darf zu Recht behaupten: «Der GC Heidiland hat einen der bestgepflegtesten 9-LochPlätze der Schweiz.»

Wie gut die Greenkeeper arbeiten, haben sie beim grossen Hochwasser 2013 eindrücklich bewiesen. «Der Platz des GC Heidiland liegt im Überflutungsgebiet des Fluppibachs.

Beim Bau wurden Vorkehrungen getroffen, damit ein 100-Jahr-Hochwasser dem Platz nichts anhaben kann», sagt Ralph Polligkeit. Trotzdem setzte Anfang Juni 2013 ein 30-Jahr-Hochwasser Grüns, Fairways und Abschläge kom­ plett unter Wasser. «Der Platz musste eine Woche geschlos­ sen bleiben, die Greenkeeper standen fast rund um die Uhr im Einsatz», so Polligkeit. Nach einer Woche war der Spuk vorbei, die Spuren der Naturkatastrophe waren nach einem Monat nicht mehr sichtbar.

Klein, familiär und sportlich Der 9-Loch Executive Course war ursprünglich als Public Course geplant. Während der Planungsphase reifte aber die 70 |

This makes the course challenging even for experienced players while “it also offers golf novices the chance for quick success,” comments Ralph Polligkeit, Chairman of the Golf Club Heidiland and ­Director of Golf & Sports at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Thanks to the short par-3 holes, golfers not only quickly get their first par but also frequently get a hole-in-one. In fact, the latter happened four times in the first two months after the course opened. “Since 2009, we have only kept a list of the holes-in-one played during tournaments,” the Chairman comments. 27 were recorded in the last six seasons.

The Golf Club Heidiland team is proud of the outstandingly maintained course. As both this facility and Golf Club Bad ­Ragaz’s 18-hole Championship Course are part of the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, all synergies can be used when tending the courses. As such, the greenkeeper team maintains not only the two golf courses but also all the parkland within the resort, using the full range of machinery available for all their tasks.

The Chairman can quite rightly claim: “The Golf Club Heidiland has one of the best maintained 9-hole courses in Switzer­ land.”

The greenkeepers’ skills truly came to the fore in the great flood of 2013. “The Golf Club Heidiland course lies in the floodplain of the Fluppibach stream. When it was built, precautions were taken to ensure that none of the water levels reached in the last 100 years would affect the course,” comments Ralph Polligkeit. Despite this, when the levels hit a 30year high in early June 2013, the greens, fairways and tees were completely flooded. “The course had to remain closed for a week and the greenkeepers worked tirelessly almost around the clock,” states Ralph Polligkeit. A week later and the nightmare was over; all traces of the natural disaster were gone within a month.

Der Klub wuchs in den Folgejahren kontinuierlich, 2013 wurde mit 430 erwachsenen Mitgliedern ein neuer Höchststand erreicht. Aktuell zählt der GC Heidiland knapp über 400 Mitglieder. Die Nachfrage ist konstant, bietet der GC Heidiland Golfinteressierten doch seit zehn Jahren eine attraktive Möglichkeit, in den Golfsport reinzuschnuppern und am regen Klubleben teilzunehmen, ohne dass dafür hohe Gebühren anfallen. «Ein Angebot, das gerade in Zeiten, wo berufliche Mobilität einen hohen Stellenwert hat, viel Anklang findet», weiss Polligkeit.

Wenn der GC Heidiland 2015 in seine zehnte (volle) Saison startet, ist ein eingespieltes Team am Ruder. Gut 100 Veranstaltungen werden jährlich im GC Heidiland durchgeführt, insgesamt 30 000 Golfrunden pro Jahr auf dem Parcours gespielt. Der junge, sportlich-familiäre Golfklub ist mittlerweile aus der regionalen Golfszene nicht mehr wegzudenken. www.gcheidiland.ch

Small, casual and sporty The 9-hole Executive Course was originally planned as a public course. During the planning phase, however, the developers became convinced that there was room for a second golf club in the region. The idea took off, especially as golf boomed in Switzerland at the start of the third millennium. “When founded in November 2004, one year before the golf course even opened, the Golf Club Heidiland already had 130 members,” Ralph Polligkeit recalls.

When the course opened in 2005, memberships doubled to 264. The club continued to grow in the years that followed with membership figures hitting a new high of 430 in 2013. Today, the Golf Club Heidiland has just over 400 members. Demand is constant; after all, for ten years now, Golf Club Heidiland has offered newcomers to golf an attractive opportunity to try out the game and take part in active club life without having to pay high fees. “This is an offer that many people take up, especially in today’s world where occupational mobility is of great value,” states Ralph Polligkeit.

When Golf Club Heidiland starts its tenth (full) season in 2015, a well-practised team will be at the helm. More than 100 events are held at the Golf Club Heidiland every year and 30,000 rounds of golf per year are played on the course.
