Grameen Telecom Trust at the 7th Social Business Day

T

he objective of Social Business Day is sharing the experiences of social business entrepreneurs and experts in the field. The event also creates an opportunity for participants to engage in various interactive panel sessions and workshops to broaden their understanding in their specific areas of interest. The 7th Social Business Day (SBD) was observed on 28 July 2017, at Hotel Le Meridian, Dhaka. Around 250 international participants representing over 50 countries joined the conference. Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus welcomed the guests and said, “This is a gathering of social business practitioners, academics and enthusiasts what we call a family gathering. We wait the whole year for this day to come together and see each other and share our views.” At the beginning of the session, Ms Lamiya Morshed, Executive Director, Yunus Centre, delivered the welcome speech on behalf of Yunus Centre and thanked the guests. In keynote speech, Mr. Thomas Gass, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, the focal point of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) spoke about how sustainable development goals can be achieved and also mentioned how social business promotes a shared vision of humanity. He added, social business will be most successful in countries that are struggling to achieve SDGs. President of the World Olympians Association Mr. Joël Bouzou, while greeting said that many potential athletes cannot practice sports because of lack of facilities which can be resolved through social business. He added, everyone deserves equal opportunity to compete and to excel. He also discussed about the Olympic movement and society. These sessions were followed by signing of MOUs. Seven MOUs were signed for setting up Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) with seven renowned international universities at the event. The Autonomous University of Baja C a l i fo r n i a ( UA B C ) , M éx i c o, Chandigarh University, India, Catholic University of Zimbabwe, U n i v e rs i t y P u t ra M a l ay s i a , Bethlehem University, Palestine and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will be launching Yunus Social Business Centres (YSBC) at their respective campus. With these centres, the total number of YSBCs around the world now stands at 41. Ms. Parveen Mahmud, Managing Director of Grameen Telecom Trust and Md. Ashraful Hassan Chief Executive Officer, Grameen Telecom Trust presented in the Pecha Kucha session at the event. The Managing Director of Grameen Telecom Trust also presented a video on the activities of Grameen Telecom Trust. Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan (CFO, GTT); Mr. Manjur Ahmed (Head of HR and Admin, GTT); Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business, GTT); Md. Jahirul Islam Khan (AGM, PID, GTT), Major (Retd.) Mustafizur Rahman (Project InCharge, SCC, Zirabo, GTT) were also present during the presentations of GTT at the Pecha Kucha Session. It was followed by a presentation by Md. Mr. Hasan also presented a time lapse video of the construction process of Samajik Convention Centre, having capacity of 2030 seats convention centre at Zirabo, Dhaka. A video based online social business course was launched on the day with an aim to reach a target of enrolling half a million subscribers and break the Guinness Book of World Record for the highest number of enrollment in an online course. The course is designed by renowned a set of professional Mr. Wajed Salam from the United States. In his concluding speech Prof. Yunus emphasized on the importance of starting with small entrepreneurs and work consistently to realize

the vision of achieving three zeroes; zero unemployment, zero poverty and zero net carbon emission. “If I can make one village achieving zero unemployment, I would think myself successful. This small achievement will also make people believe in themselves. They will move on to achieve zero poverty and then zero net carbon emission. Gradually it will be two villages, then cities and one day whole country will achieve the three zeroes�, Prof. Yunus said.

Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur) Program 200th In-House Social Business Executive Design Lab What is Social Business Executive Design Lab? Social Business Executive Design Lab is an interactive session where the Nobin Udyoktas- NUs (New Entrepreneurs) present their investment proposals and share their stories to entrepreneurship. The chair of the event along with the team of Social Business of Grameen Telecom Trust carefully examine the investment proposals and approve with few suggestions. The Nobin Udyokta Program of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) has embarked into another milestone of success by crossing two-hundred (200) In-House Social Business Executive Design Labs on Sunday, 13 August 2017. The 200th in-house Design lab was held at the Social Business Learning Centre of GTT chaired by Ms. Jannat-E-Quanine (Former General Manager, Grameen Bank) where forty-three (43) NUs presented their business proposals. All the business proposals were approved in the design lab. With this GTT crossed Six Thousand and Eight (6,800) NUs and created more than Thirteen Thousand (13,000) jobs which contribute in the economy of Bangladesh. Among these 6,800 NUs, ninety-six (96) are female, one hundred and fifty-six (156) are students and five (5) are physically challenged.

THE NU AWARD CEREMONY: Award giving ceremony of Best Nobin Udyoktas of 2016. Since 2015 Grameen Telecom Trust organizes "The Best NU" award to encourage the NUs to be successful entrepreneurs. This year this award ceremony of Best Nobin Udyokta -2016 took place on 28 July, 2017 at Polli Mongol Karmashuchi (PMK) at Zirabo, Dhaka. Ten (10) Nobin UdyoktaNU (New Entrepreneur) of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) were awarded the title of Best Nobin Udyokta 2016 based on eight (8) point parameter set by the Nobin Udyokta

Program of GTT. Out of these award recepients, four (4) NUs were female and six (6) NUs were male. Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business, Grameen Telecom Trust) awarded the Nobin Udyoktas with crests. He also gave a motivational speech to inspire the Nobin Udyoktas. The ceremony was facilitated by K.M. Saleheen (Coordinator, Social Business, GTT), Major (Retd.) Benazir Ahmed (Coordinator, Security and Admin, GTT) and sixteen (16) area managers of the NU program of GTT were also present at the occasion.

NUs affected in flood People from many parts of Bangladesh have been severely affected by the recent flood especially people from the Northern part of the country. NUs from different regions are affected by the flood. Their homes and shops have drowned/damaged, shops closed and businesses severely affected. There is a sharp decrease in their sale. GTT has already invested in 6793 NU’s business plan covering 17 districts with 50 unit offices. 235 NUs from 14 unit offices have been severely affected by the flooding. GTT plans to review/reschedule the recoupment from NUs in order to help them overcome the situation. It also provided proper assistance according to their needs.

GRAMEEN TELECOM TRUST AND FOREIGN DELEGATES Field exposure trip by GTT for foreign delegates A field exposure trip was organized by Grameen Telecom Trust facilitated by Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business, Grameen Telecom Trust) for two delegates from Malaysia. The trip aimed to give a better exposure to the Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur) Program of GTT. The delegates visited ten (10) NUs and witnessed their activities; they also visited the unit office in Bhulta, Naraynganj and had a practical experience of the whole process of the NU program. The field exposure trip ended with a visit to Panam Nagar which is a historical archaeological town in the former capital of Bangladesh, Sonargaon. Foreign delegates at the field visit

A team from Indonesia visited GTT on 22 August, 2017 to learn about activities of GTT. The team was headed by Mr. Ruli Oktavian Santosa (Architect) comprising of Ms. Yanti Wadamayanti (Doctor); Mr. Boedhi Siswanto (Financial Consultant); Ms. Garlika Achmad Martanegara (Architect); Ms. Endang Ristiarti (Volunteer) and Mr. Eriko Yulianto Adjie (Architect). They all belong to an NGO, YAHINTARA (Architect, Green Nusantara Foundation). A power point presentation and a video was presented before the guests focusing on the Nobin Udyokta program.

Delegates from Tata Power and Yunus Social Business India On 26 April 2017, a five member delegation team from Tata Power India and Yunus Social Business India visited Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) to learn about its program and activities. They were Mr. Manipal Singh (Lead- Strategic HR, Tata Power); Mr. Pramod Singh (Head – Strategy & New Products (SNP), Tata Power); Mr. M a n i s h G u p t e ( G ro u p H e a d – R i s k Management/Capex/Audit/QMS, Tata Power); Ms. Aarti Wig (Country Director, Yunus Social Business India) and Mr. Rahul Batra (Programme Director, Yunus Social Business India). They were greeted by Ms. Parveen Mahmud FCA (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust) and followed by short introductory session. Presentation of GTT and its programs were given followed by several questions and answers about the methods and sustainability of the programs that were explained by the MD and others present at the event. The objective of the meeting was to give a clear understanding about Social Business Projects run by GTT.

GTT’S IN-HOUSE NEWS 14th Employee Induction Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) regularly organizes induction for its newly appointed staff. This is a continuous process. GTT organized its 14th Employee Induction on Sunday, 02 March 2017 at the Social Business Learning Centre (SBLC) of GTT. Fifty-Three (53) newly appointed field officers and One (1) newly appointed officer at the corporate office under the Nobin UdyoktaNU (New Entrepreneur) Program participated in the program where they were acquainted to the vision, mission and goal of the organization. Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan, FCA (CFO & Board Secretary, Grameen Telecom Trust) inaugurated the Induction

and welcomed the new employees. The program was facilitated by the heads of all concerned departments, senior managers and managers of GTT. Presentations were given to give a better insight on the innovative concept of Social Business and the activities of GTT. All the department heads gave a presentation introducing their respective departments’ activities and shared their views and experience of working for GTT.

The 28th Board Meeting

The 28th Board Meeting of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) was held on 14 June 2017 at Yunus Centre. The meeting was chaired by Honorable Chairman and Managing Trustee of GTT, Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus. All departments updated the Board of Trustees on various operational issues. After the presentations and discussions, the board took a number of decisions and set future plans.

The meeting started with a welcome address by the Honorable Chairman, Prof. Muhammad Yunus. It was followed by a report on GTT’s activities presented by Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust) and also the ex-officio. The meeting approved the proceedings of the previous meeting and follow up of 12 previous issues. The Board also discussed twenty-one (21) agendas.

Nobin Udyokta Screening Exercises The Screening Exercise is the first stage of Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur) Program of GTT that scouts young and aspiring entrepreneurs who are children of Grameen Bank borrowers. GTT not only provides investment but also supports the NUs with financial literacy. It’s a day-long group interactive exercise aiming to explain the details of the Nobin Udyokta Program (NUP). The Twenty-Sixth (26) Nobin Udyokta Screening Exercise of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) was held with Thirty-Two (32) participants on 9 May 2017 at Ullasonatola High School Room, Saghata, Gaibandha. The day-long exercise included briefing, discussion and break away sessions which were conducted by A. M. Saifur Rahman (Area ManagerNU, Grameen Telecom Trust). The Twenty-Seventh (27) Nobin Udyokta Screening Exercise of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) was held with Twenty-One (21) participants on Saturday, 20 May 2017, at the market place of Dhamurhat Upazilla in Naogaon District of Bangladesh. The day-

long exercise was the first Screening Exercise under the Nazipur unit office GTT that included briefing, discussion and break away sessions which were conducted by Md. Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan (Panel Officer, Grameen Telecom Trust); Md. Sohidullah (Area Manager, Grameen Telecom Trust) and other field officers of GTT. The Twenty-Eight (28) Nobin Udyokta Screening Exercise of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) was held with Thirty-Two (32) participants on Monday, 22 May 2017, at the Baroghariya market place in Chapai Nawabganj Sadar under Naogaon District. This was the first Screening Exercise in Chapai Nawabganj Sadar unit office of GTT conducted by Md. Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan (Panel Officer, Grameen Telecom Trust) and unit in-charge of Rohanpur unit office and Shibganj Unit office.

Refreshers Training Al ong wi t h re g ula r I n- house employee induction and trainings, GTT also provides regular refreshers training to the NU staff for betterment of field management, service delivery and program. The 7th Refreshers Training for the field staff of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) was held on 30th and 31st July 2017 at the Social Business Learning Centre of GTT. The program was designed to enhance the capacity and skills of the employee who work for the Nobin Udkyota Program of GTT. Sixty-Four (64) field officers under Nobin Udyokta Program participated in the training session. Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan (CFO and Board Secretary, GTT) inaugurated the program. In his inaugural speech he emphasized the importance of training. He also said the knowledge one gets from the training, becomes their lifelong possession. GTT), Mr. Forhad Karim (Senior Manager, Internal audit, GTT) and Ms. Rafi Akter (Assistant Manager, HR & Admin, GTT) discussed about the activities of their respective department. In the second and final day of training Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business, GTT) discussed vividly on strong and weak aspects of Nobin Udyokta program and gave directions on overcoming the shortcomings. In the second phase the panel officers of the Nobin Udyokta program exchanged views with their respective area officers. In her concluding remarks, Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, GTT) in her speech said, GTT has been able to attract the world with its social business program. People from other countries are interested in the Nobin Udyokta Program. She congratulated the participants and gave them credit for this success. She also called everyone to work more attentively and with joy.

Social Business Monthly Co-ordination Meeting The regular Social Business Monthly Coordination Meetings took place as usual at Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT). The fourth and last Social Business Monthly Co-ordination Meeting was held on 10 September 2017. It was presided by Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan, CFO and Board Secretary, Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT). The first “Social Business Monthly Coordination� meeting was took place On Sunday 11 June 2017. The second Social Business Monthly Co-ordination Meeting was held on Monday 10 July 2017 at Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) and the third meeting was held on 10 August 2017 at Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) and was presided by Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust) respectively. the first meeting, Iit was decided that from now on, this meeting will be held every month at GTT with the objective of discussing the various field level issues and technical issues related to the social business programs of GTT, i.e. Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur) Program and projects under Social Business Learning and Innovation Fund.
