he Social Business Day 2018 took Place at Infosys Electronic City Campus in Bengaluru, India on 28th and 29th of June 2018 to celebrate the groundbreaking idea of Social Business (SB) and to highlight its new developments. The annual event was participated by more than 1,200 participants from 42 countries around the world consisting of SB practitioners, social activists, leaders, change-makers, NGOs, corporates, academics, researchers, students, athletes, and actors. It created an opportunity for the participants to engage in different interactive plenary sessions and workshops to broaden their understanding in specific areas of The Monthly Co-ordination Meeting of Social Business Department . . .

It covered a wide variety of topics ranging from agriculture, health, and nutrition to creativity, technology, sports, and youth as the driving force behind social businesses. The theme for Social Business Day 2018 was “A World of Three Zeros: Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, Zero Net Carbon Emissions�. Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, in his speech, emphasized the risks of wealth concentration and how it has become a ticking time-bomb. He said that economic theory has fitted us with glasses with dollar signs. They do not let us see the world of people. He also said that we need bi-focal glasses which have dollar sign as well as global sign. We can create social businesses to solve the problem of wealth concentration. He elaborated how Social Business can help to achieve a world of Three Zeros. No problem is beyond human capacity and social businesses are like miracle seeds. Once we can create it, we can change the world. Emmanuel Faber (CEO, Danone) and renowned cardiologist Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty (Managing Director, Narayana Hrudayalaya) made keynote speeches where they both emphasized on the global impact of Social Business. A seventeen-member team of Grameen Telecom Trust led by Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust) participated in the event. The team included Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan (CFO & Board Secretary, Grameen Telecom Trust), Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business & Program Support, Grameen Telecom Trust), and other executives. Ms. Parveen Mahmud discussed about the Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneurs) Program in the 8th plenary session titled ‘Converting Unemployment into Entrepreneurship’ on the opening day. The speakers in this panel went deep into the NU Program in Bangladesh, discussing the process through which new entrepreneurs are selected and mentored, and how young individuals are given financial and entrepreneurial leverage by different Social Business funds. Three plenary sessions on the themes “A World of Three Zeros”, “Science and Technology for Social Business”, and “Past and Future of Microfinance as Social Business” were held on the first day. The sessions were led by the leading academicians and prominent practitioners in the field of Social Business including Manoj Kumar (Co-Founder and CEO, Social A l p h a ) , S te ve H o l l i n g wo r t h (President and CEO, Grameen Foundation), Cam Donaldson (ProVice Chancellor, Yunus Chair in Social Business and Health, Glasgow Caledonian University), Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim (Professor & Head, General Education Program, University of Liberal Arts B a n g l a d e s h ) , M a s a h i ro Ka n (Former Executive Director, World Bank, Japan), Andrea Jung, (President and CEO, Grameen America), K. Paul Thomas (Managing Director and CEO, ESAF Small Finance Bank), and Ratan Kumar Nag (Former Managing Director, Grameen Bank). on Global Initiative for Tire Recycling, Youth4SDG Social Business Challenge, Kannada Version of the book ‘Banker to the Poor’, and announcing the winners of SBYA Champ. The day ended with a comedy debate titled “Social Business is a Completely Crazy Idea” leading the day towards a light and fun closure. Six country forums were held simultaneously in the program for giving opportunities to the country representatives to discuss their social business programmes, establish close contacts, and plan social business actions in their own countries and regions. Eight PechaKucha sessions (a special kind of presentation) on Global Social Business Summit 2018 and on some mega projects e.g. Construction of Health Care Infrastructure, Introduction to Grameen China, Danone Communities Social Business, Grain of Sand, Yunus Yoshimoto Social Action Company, INK, and Yunus Social Business India were presented in the program. The concluding day opened with the plenary session ‘Corporates in Social Business’ which added to the global discourse of how corporates can engage in social development for which social business can be a passageway. The second day’s PechaKucha sessions featured the following initiatives: Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing- A Unique Social Business, Technology for Social Impact, ‘Simple Learnings, Simple Perspectives’, ‘Chittagong1 Social Business Centre’, 1

‘Yunus Sports Hub’, ‘YSB Global Experiences’, ‘Perfect Day’, ‘Creating A Thriving Social Business Ecosystem: for the youth by the youth’, ‘Social Business Academia Conference 2018’, and ‘Updates on YSB Foundation Taiwan’. There was a pre-conference on Social Business Academia 2018 on the second day. This preconference was basically for academics and researchers to create network and exchange views on academic developments in preparation for the next Social Business Academia Conference to be held in Wolfsburg, Germany in November 2018. Another special event on that day was signing a MoU between NITI Aayog and Yunus Social Business India. The event was to establish formal relationship between the two organisations. In the event total ten panel sessions took place during the two-day program. Some of the topics were“Financing Social Business”, “Harnessing Creativity for Solving Social Issues”, “Converting Unemployment into Entrepreneurship”, and “Social Business and Sports”. IN-HOUSE NEWS Social Business Monthly Co-ordination Meeting The Monthly Co-ordination Meeting of Social Business department of GTT takes place in the first week of each month. The last months were no exception. The 12th Monthly Co-ordination Meeting was held at Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) on Sunday, April 13, 2018. It was presided over by Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust). In the meeting, various aspects of accounts related to Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur)

The 13th Social Business Monthly Co-ordination Meeting was chaired by Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan (Chief Financial Officer & Board Secretary, GTT), which was held on Monday, June 11, 2018. In the meeting, strategies for recoupment collection before and after Eid-ul-Fitr was set. Besides the uniform agendas, a few other issues such as operational issues in field level, IT equipment and operational software were also discussed and necessary guidelines were provided.

She also discussed about internal audit report, reporting method, monitoring system, maintenance of fixed assets and unit offices, capacity building, and taking responsibilities.

The 14th Monthly Co-ordination Meeting was held on Monday, July 10, 2018. In this meeting, the next one year NU program expansion plan of GTT including the set-up of new unit offices were presented. The issues related to admin, NUPMS software, and IT were also discussed. The meeting was chaired by Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust).

33rd Board Meeting and AGM of Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) GTT holds its board meeting regularly. In continuation, its 33rd Board Meeting was held on June 07, 2018 in the meeting room of Yunus Center. The meeting was presided over by the Honorable Chairman and Managing Trustee of GTT, Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus. In the meeting, issues related to infrastructure development, construction along with the other agendas were discussed.

Nobin Udyokta-NU (New Entrepreneur) Planning Workshop Participated by seven Panel Officers and twelve Area Managers, a workshop titled ‘Review of the Present Status of Nobin UdyoktaNU (New Entrepreneur) Program Unit Wise and Planning for the Fiscal Year July 2018 - June 2019’ took place at GTT corporate office on July 09, 2018. Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, GTT) delivered the welcome speech and inaugurated the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to overcome the challenges of NU project and making significant progress in future. Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, SB & Program Support) discussed the strategies to make significant progress overcoming the challenges. Present status of the unit offices were discussed in the workshop. An annual planning for the year 2018 was formulated in the workshop jointly by the Area Managers and the Panel Officers.

Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) organized the 18th Employee Induction Program at the Social Business Learning Centre (SBLC), GTT on April 17, 2018. Twenty-seven new employees of Social Business department participated in the program where they were acquainted to the vision, mission, and goal of the organization. All the department heads also gave presentations introducing their respective departments’ activities and shared their views and experience of working for GTT. In-House Training Risk Management & Internal Audit

A training on Risk Management & Internal Audit was arranged by Internal Audit department, GTT. It took place at SBLC, GTT on July 26, 2018 and was facilitated by Mr. Forhad Karim Khan (AGM, Internal Audit). All employees of Finance & Accounts and Internal Audit department participated in the training. Moreover, four employees from HR & Admin and two from IT also participated. The objective of the training was to update the trainees of different aspects, frameworks, and standards of Internal Audit and Risk Management from contemporary resources and real world examples in an interactive manner.

Negotiation Skill & Supply Chain Management A training on Negotiation Skill & Supply Chain M a n a g e m e n t , f a c i l i t a t e d b y M r. M d . Maniruzzaman (Manager, Admin & SCM), was arranged by Admin department at SBLC, GTT on May 10, 2018. In the training, there were nine participants from HR & Admin, three from

Finance & Accounts, one from SB, two from IT, two from SCC, and two from Internal Audit department. The objective of the training was to equip the participants with different negotiation styles, strategies, and tactics through interactive session.

External Training GTT arranges external training to develop the skill and expertise of the employees. The employees from different departments of GTT participated in five external trainings. In May 2018, three employees from Internal Audit and Legal & Asset Management participated in a training on ‘Land Purchasing, Verification, Registration System, False Deed & Land Development Tax’. Three employees from Finance & Accounts and one from IT took training on ‘Business Intelligence with MS Excel’. Both of the trainings were organized by BD Jobs. Three employees from IT department took another training on ‘Free Workshop on CISA’, organized by Rosetta Technologies.

In June 2018, two staffs from SB, three from IT, and one from Samajik Convention Centre (SCC) participated in a training on ‘Digital Content Marketing’, organized by Portonics Limited. The objective of the training was to enhance the skills of the trainees in writing contents for digital marketing. Four employees from HR & Admin and one from F&A participated in a training on ‘Employee Separation, Final Settlement & Disciplinary in the light of BD Labor Law-2006 (Amendment 2013) BD Labor Law-2015’, organized by BD Jobs in July 2018. The main objective of this training was to make the trainees more adept in crafting settlement with the job-leaving employees.

Exposure Visits Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) has successfully been promoting Social Business (SB) since its inception. Professionals and students from all over the world come to GTT under different programs to learn the implementation process of Social Business.

Visitors from Malaysia

A team from Malaysia led by Mr. Idris Jusoh (Honorable Member of Parliament and Former Minister for Higher Education, Malaysia) visited Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) on September 27, 2018 to learn the work of GTT and to know how SB is being operated in Bangladesh.

In the meeting, Ms. Parveen Mahmud (Managing Director, GTT) shared her experience of working in the sector of SB and informed the delegates about the leaders in this field as well as their contributions. She was assisted by Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, Social Business), Mr. Abu Nayeem (Manager, SB), and Mr. Mehdi Imam (Deputy Manager, SB)

A four-member team, led by Mr. Sourav Roy (Chief of CSR), Tata Steel Limited, visited Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) on June 5, 2018 to study Nobin Udoykta and Sustainable Innovation program fund. Manager, SB) participated in the discussion. Earlier the team visited Yunus Centre and had a discussion with Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus.

Another twenty-member delegation from S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJMIR), Mumbai, India visited Grameen Telecom Trust (GTT) corporate office on July 31, 2018 to learn about the Social Business (SB) operated by GTT. The visit was organized by Yunus Center under its immersion program.

Mr. Jayanta Kumer Bosu (Team Leader, SB) GTT along with Mr. Abu Nayeem (Manager, SB) conducted a presentation to the delegation explaining how GTT works in the field of SB, how GTT grew its SB programs like New Entrepreneur (Nobin UdyoktaNU) and Social Business Learning and Innovation Fund (SBLIF). Both the presenters replied to a number of questions regarding the success and challenges faced by GTT to implement NU program, the scale of operation etc. The event ended with signing on visitors’ book and a photo session.
