Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus speaking at the inaugural session.

“The idea of social business is spreading reading across the world d in in a serious seririou se ous d playing a significant role in solving way, opening many frontiers, and social problems” said Grameen Bank founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus on June 28, 2013 at the 4th Annual Social Business Day, 2013. This year about 1,000 participants from home and abroad gathered in Dhaka to participate in the event with the theme of “turning visions into realities” at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel. The objective of this event was to create awareness about social business by sharing experiences of social business entrepreneurs and experts . Citing successes of social businesses, Professor Yunus said people working on spreading the idea of social business are being invited to solve social problems even in the developed world. “The European Union has made a policy on social business. Africa is also coming up, while Brazil is opening its doors for social business,” he noted. Continued on page 2...

The Nobel Laureate told the audience that people with very small amount of money can launch social businesses and become successful and thus solve a social problem. He ruled out the idea that only well endowed people, major corporations and foundations can set up a social business. The “Banker to the Poor” said his vision is to see one percent of the total investment of a country being made in social businesses within the next five years. “We have to show the success stories at the ground level. One example can change people’s mind,” said the microcredit guru. About the future of social business, Professor Yunus said, “We have just started social business. It will bring a paradigm shift in world business.” The occasion coincides with the birthday of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. The day’s proceedings commenced with birthday wishes from friends around the world. Sir Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Group, with his team, wished Professor Muhammad Yunus through a pre-recorded video. Delegates from China came to the venue with placards reading “We need You” as a mark of respect for the Nobel Laureate. Speaking at the function, US Ambassador H.E W. Dan Mozena said Professor Yunus had not only given a model but also an opportunity to poor people to invest and lift themselves out of poverty and become contributing members of the society. The successful models of microcredit and social business have proved critics wrong; the banker to the poor is now termed the “dreamer and builder of new life”. Prince of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia His Highness Yam Tunku Ali Redhauddin said social business has become a mainstream model rather than an alternative form of business. He said poverty had largely been eradicated in Malaysia, but some issues in the country are yet to be addressed. “We need social business not only to solve social problems in a country, but also to make the world a better place for everyone,” the Crown Prince said.

During the day, a web portal, socialbusinesspedia.com, was launched. It will have all the updates and realtime information about global social business activities. The web portal was jointly developed by Grameen Solutions and Grameen Communications. In addition the Social Business Marketplace showcased social business companies running successfully in Bangladesh and around the world giving clear insights into the world of social business. The stalls displayed various products and programs from countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Five successfully in progress Social Business projects screened at SB Design Lab of the Yunus Center were presented at the programme. The projects included: ID Group Project (Yunus Centre), Softy Project (Grameen Fabrics & Fashion Ltd), SDRS Social Business Project (SDRS & Grameen Telecom Trust), Blind Rehabilitation Project (Grameen Trust & Sampan Group) and Grameen Japan Auto mechanic Ltd. (Grameen Shikkha & SK Dream). Another part of Social Business Day was “reports from the academia” which featured presentation of reports from different universities around the world where social business is taught. Dr M Azizur Rahman, Vice Chancellor of Uttara University, Dhaka; Professor Dr Nurul Momen, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka International University; Professor Rafiqul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business, Daffodil International University, Dhaka; Professor Cam Donaldson, Yunus chair in Social Business and Health, Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland; and Dr Ashir Ahmed, Associate Professor, Kyushu University, Japan, presented the status of social business courses at their respective universities. Apart from aforementioned universities, other universities around the world have also introduced courses on the topic. The inaugural ceremony was followed by six panel discussions and two plenary sessions which were addressed by delegates from home and abroad. The whole event was smoothly anchored by Naveed Mahbub, Chief Entertainment Officer (Naveed’s Comedy Club).

A view of opening plenary session

Experts from home and abroad have called for using social business as a tool for development. Speaking at plenary sessions of the 4th Social Business Day programme, they said social business is an effective solution and powerful answer to social problems which can contribute to poverty reduction. Binod Chaudhary, Chairman of Chaudhary Group, Nepal, said, billions of dollars are spent every year around the world to lift people out of poverty. But their fates have not changed much. “The world will have to follow the philosophy of Professor Yunus to eradicate poverty. This is the way to go,” he said. Emmanuel Faber, CEO of France based Danone, told the opening plenary that social business is a highly innovative idea and powerful answer to social problems. He said more than a dozen French companies, with combined annual revenue of $200 billion, have set up social businesses in the country. Clementine Lalande, project manager of Yunus Social Business in Haiti, said social business is a powerful tool for developing the country (Haiti), which has suffered serious deforestation. Saskya Bruysten, co-founder of Yunus Social Business in Germany, said many governments in Africa

were interested in n the social business concept. Martin Loeffler, Chi Chieff E Executive Officer (CEO) off ti Offi Grameen Caldas, a social business consulting firm and incubation centre in Colombia, said the fledgling concept, which is the brainchild of Professor Muhammad Yunus, has already gained much momentum. “The idea has already got so much attention _ you just need to look at the number of people who have taken part in Social Business Day. Among them are lot of corporations _ so we see that they already believe in it.” UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman said social business was the new way to reach out to the people in need. With the charity model not being sustainable and exhausting, social business is the way to go. “This is a way to find a measurable and sustainable impact of the solutions intended to help people,” she said. The Hollywood actress also said the younger generation was imbedded with the idea of social business. “So, we will have to raise awareness and convince younger generations.” Ms. Parveen Mahmud FCA, Managing Director, Grameen Telecom Trust and Ms. Lamiya Morshed, Executive Director, Yunus Centre also participated the sessions among others.
