S23 | Sponsored Architectural Study in Ireland, Scotland, and England
SOLO STUDY MEDIUMS USED: GOUACHE, WATERCOLOR, INK WASH
In the summer of 2023 I was lucky enough to win a scholarship to travel Europe for 6 weeks and use hand-drawing as a means of observing certain architectural narratives. I chose to traverse the British Isles, as I wanted to delve into the relationship between architecture and its landscape, particularly in the cases of stone buildings and locally-sourced construction. For six weeks, I completed over 120 sketches and paintings on-site, observing ruins, urban centers, and the ways in which residents interacted with their stone surroundings.
S20-S23 | Independent Project
Norwalk in Ink is an independent project, consisting of 116 drawings created over the span of three years. Each piece depicts a location in Norwalk, CT my beloved hometown, and is drawn on-site with pen & ink. All of the drawings were drawn on 6 x 8” dry wash sketchbook spreads, and use micron pens and Faber-Castell markers. Norwalk in Ink attempts to explore this small city through its details, specifically the ways in which its architecture has been used and transformed over the years. The following collection of drawings is only a portion of the complete project, which is on youtube as a sketchbook flipthrough: “Graham Murtha: Norwalk In Ink”).
