ABSTRACT

The municipality of Marathon presents a rich reserve of cultural heritage and natural landscapes, with great ecological and historical value. Its preservation is important for historical, social, cultural and environmental reasons. Nevertheless, a large number of the cultural legacy remain unknown, many have been degraded, while they have not been preserved enough for such an important cultural asset. They are also under constant pressure from environmental and man-made risks that lead to material deterioration, ecological degradation and in many cases partial or complete destruction. Furthermore, the distinction between environmental and anthropogenic risks is often indiscernible since many environmental risks have anthropogenic causes.

The study of the threats facing the natural and cultural heritage of the municipality of Marathon was carried out both on a large scale, at the district and municipality level, and on a small scale, with the analysis of selected examples. The results suggest a sequence of risks that may act either individually or combined together. This results in continuous pressure on ecosystems and tangible cultural assets. At the small scale, the degree of impact between the study areas can differ significantly, mainly due to the local characteristics of each area. In this case a different degree of vulnerability is found between the risks in the different examples.
