A Death in Our Parish Family Dana Frazer died on Saturday, September 21, 2019. The burial liturgy was offered at Grace-St. Luke's on Tuesday, September 24.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant, Dana.

Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

This Week and Beyond

Food Pantry Sunday (Sept. 29) Food Pantry Sunday is this Sunday. Items needed are tuna, peanut butter, dried milk, toiletries, and hygiene products. Bring your items and place them in the basket as you go to communion on the 29th. Monetary gifts are also welcome. Volunteers are always needed! Parish Hall Forum: Living as Christians of Inclusion and Welcome (Sept. 29) On this Memphis Pride weekend join the Rev. Amy M. George and the Rev. Meredith Jane Day at 9:15 a.m. this Sunday for a conversation about inclusion in The Episcopal Church. Come learn more about our history as a welcoming denomination, as well as explore and discuss ways that we can become more open to all in our community.

Public Theology (Oct. 3) Taking GSL Formation to the Community Offered 5:30-7 p.m. at Celtic Crossing All are invited to Public Theology, a GSL monthly formation offering at Celtic Crossing in the Cooper Young neighborhood. We’ll see you Oct. 3 for “Steps to Peace in a Violent World.” The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, rector, will facilitate a conversation about the challenges of and proven steps to one’s peace in a full, complicated, and broken society.

Blessing of the Animals (Oct. 6) We invite you to bring your dogs, cats, hamsters, lizards, fish, birds, snakes, and hedgehogs to the GSL Church nave for the Blessing of the Animals in commemoration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. We ask that all creatures be leashed, caged, or otherwise contained. Each animal will receive an individual blessing from the clergy.

Episcopal Youth Community Sept. 29, Rite 13 and J2A are not meeting this Sunday due to Exodus.

EYC Sept. 29, Jr. high meets at 4 p.m. and Sr. high meets at 5 p.m.

High School Prayer Breakfast (9th - 12th Grade), Tuesday, Oct. 1, 7-8 a.m. at Ugly Mug on Poplar.

Biscuits & Bible (6th - 8th Grade), Wednesday, Oct. 2, 6:45-7:45 a.m. in the Red Room.

Inspired: A Skeptic’s Guide to Reading the Bible (Oct. 9, 16 & 23; 6 – 7:30 p.m.)

As author Rachel Held Evans writes, “If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it?” This three-week course will discuss how to read the Bible in a new way.

Vestry Nominations Now Open

The GSL Vestry is the elected lay leadership team of fifteen (15) people who collaborate with the Wardens and the Rector to support the mission, administration, and ministries essential for operating as a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee. Nominations for five (5) open Vestry positions may be received through Sunday, October 6, and must be followed by a Nominee Information Form no later than noon on Friday, October 11. The Vestry election will take place at the Annual Meeting of the Parish on Sunday, November 24, at 9:30 a.m. in Trezevant Hall. The Nominee Recommendation and Nominee Information forms may be directed to the Vestry Nominating Committee online, via email to Nominating Committee Chair, Kurt Patton (kurt_patton at yahoo.com), or via hand-delivery to the Parish Office. Episcopal Bookshop Speaker Series Eighty years young, lifelong Episcopalian and multi-time cancer survivor, Catherine Hess, has recorded her faith journey in poetry and song. She will speak at the Episcopal Bookshop, on the campus of St. Mary's Cathedral, on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 10:30. This is the first in a series of speaker events at the Episcopal Bookshop beginning in October. All are invited. For further information, please contact the Bookshop at 901-527-5684.
