Day of Pentecost

Pentecost is Sunday, June 9, and all are invited to wear red to remind us of the fire of the Spirit.

Pentecost is the annual festival that marks the birth of the Christian Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means “fiftieth day” and is celebrated fifty days after Easter Day. As one of the seven principal feasts of the Church year, it is and is especially appropriate to administer the sacrament of Holy Baptism, which will take place during the 10:30 a.m. service. This year, our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd children and catechists will process and then light candles in the sanctuary to symbolize the seven gifts of the Spirit (11:1–3a): Wisdom, Understanding, Fear of God, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, and Piety. Spread the word about this great day for the body of Christ, the Church!

Adult Formation (June 9)

Parish Hall Forum Parish Hall Forums continue throughout the summer! Our topic this week will be: Exploring Pentecost and the Seven Gifts of the Spirit.

Join us in Trezevant Hall for breakfast at 8:45 a.m. followed by the Parish Hall Forum from 9:3010:20.

Public Theology (June 6) Mark your calendar for the next GSL Public Theology June 6, 5:30-7 p.m. at Celtic Crossing in the Cooper Young neighborhood. Join Father Ollie Rencher to discuss “Pentecost: Celebrating The Holy Spirit and Our Eternal Life.” Public Theology is a time of laid-back fellowship and open conversation facilitated at a public restaurant by a member of the clergy. Topics will focus on relevant issues of faith, spirituality, and current events. Both non-alcoholic and alcoholic refreshments will be available for purchase. All adults are invited to these drop-in gatherings, so bring a friend! For more information, contact the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher (901-252-6320, orencher@gracestlukes.org)

Young Adult BBQ (June 8) All young adults (20s and 30s) in the parish are invited to a summer BBQ hosted by Dan and Price Peacock. We will gather on Saturday, June 8, from 4:30 till 7:30 p.m. Burgers and Dogs are provided, but feel free to bring your favorite snack or drink to share. Spouses, kids, and friends are all welcome! EfM Completion and Promotion (June 16) On Sunday, June 16, we will celebrate Beth Moore Perkins’ completion of all four years of the Education for Ministry (EfM) program. Beth has completed the program while working full time at St. Jude’s with a busy life that includes family commitments and travel for work. She is very insightful and has a clearly spoken manner that she uses to contribute intellectually; in addition, she is especially supportive to individuals in the group. Her primary spiritual gift is faith, she has a steadfast knowing about God’s love that is evident in the way she lives her life. She is an inspiration to the group. Belvedere Chamber Music Festival (June 19-22) The 13th Annual Belvedere Chamber Music Festival will be at Grace-St. Luke’s June 19–22. Concerts are each evening at 7:30 and on Friday and Saturday afternoons at 3. As always the programs are made up primarily of music from the last hundred years. Some of the well-known composers represented are Prokofiev, Mahler, Villa-Lobos, Andre Previn, and Leonard Bernstein. Programs last approximately an hour with no intermission. All concerts are free and open to the public. There will be an opening reception in Trezevant Hall after the concert on Wednesday night. Please come and invite friends and neighbors. Summer Office Hours From June 7 through August 9, the Parish House will be closed on Fridays. The church offices will be open Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Outreach Ministry

Porter-Leath, a GSL Grantee Recipient For the past nine years, Porter-Leath has been the recipient of a GraceSt. Luke’s Community Support Grant. For those wishing to volunteer their time at Porter-Leath, opportunities at several locations across the city include reading in classrooms, playing with blocks, or just spending one-on-one time with a child that needs extra help learning their letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. Parishioners can choose to volunteer individually or in a group Monday through Friday between 9 and 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.gracestlukes.org/news/porter-leath/.
