Ascending With Jesus During A Pandemic. Forty days after Easter Day, the church catholic (universal) celebrates the feast of the Ascension of Jesus. Always on a Thursday, it recalls our Lord’s exaltation by being taken gloriously up into heaven. The Acts of the Apostles (1:1-11) tell us that after his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus was seen for forty days before he ascended into heaven to be “seated at the right hand of God the Father.” Then his faithful followers awaited the promised Spirit of God and were not disappointed on the Day of Pentecost, which we will celebrate on May 31. During the COVID-19 pandemic and all that it brings, we are called to be a faithful Easter people of hope, justice, and love whose hearts and minds are ascending with Jesus. On this Eve of the Ascension and every day, let us dwell with him as he lives in us. Not only did Jesus promise to never leave his people comfortless, he promised to give us eternal life. - The Rev.
