A Message from Amzie Williams About two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of serving as an adult staff member for Happening at St. Columba. For those who do not yet know the magic that is Happening, it is a spiritual retreat for youth and led by youth in grades 10-12. I attended Happening in Mississippi some years ago, and still carry the lessons and friendships gained during that time with me to this day. The pure magic of the weekend comes from the fact that the youth run the show. It allows them to hone their leadership skills, empathy, as well as a safe space to share their personal stories. Truly I tell you, people walk away from these weekends different humans, I do almost every time. Grace St. Luke’s is full of the Happening magic as we had seven youth go through the weekend as Happeners and 9 of our youth returned to serve on Happening Staff. Watching these youth coordinate, delegate, and plan an entire weekend gives me hope that they will be influential leaders in our community. However, it is watching their acts of selfless kindness and compassion that assures me they will be Christ-like leaders in our community.
