Commemorating the Feast of Saint Luke. October 18 marks the feast of Saint Luke observed throughout Episcopal and other traditions that celebrate saints of all sorts and conditions. On this day, Grace-St. Luke’s opportunities for worship (10:30 a.m. in person or virtual, 5:30 p.m. prerecorded virtual, 6 p.m. outdoors) and adult formation (9:15 a.m. virtual) will boost the celebration of our patron saint. Luke was a Gentile (one who is not Jewish), a physician, and one of Paul’s fellow missionaries in the early spread of Christianity through the Roman world. Church historians and theologians have identified him as the writer of both the Gospel which bears his name, and its sequel, the Acts of the Apostles. He had apparently not known Jesus, but was clearly much inspired by hearing about him from those who had known him. Widely known as an evangelist for the Gospel and the power of God to heal, transform and bring peace to the wounded, the timing of his feast day could not be more perfect. The dedicated ministry of Luke invites us also to honor all who have served and presently serve others through the healthcare profession. Today’s news and events are full of ways both to engage life at GSL and remember Luke, even by meditating on the second stanza of By all your saints still striving, “For Luke, beloved physician, all praise, whose Gospel shows the healer of the nations, the one who shares our woes. Your wine and oil, O Savior, upon our spirits pour, and with true hearts of Gilead anoint us evermore.” –The Rev. Ollie V. Rencher
