The Athletic Department Mission at Grace

The Grace College athletic department exists for the purpose of glorifying God by helping make disciples of Jesus Christ, developing competent athletic teams, and sharing the Gospel message with the sport culture. The athletics program is an integral part of the educational mission of Grace College. Competition in athletics makes a significant contribution in the development of the total person and can be used effectively as part of the training program that prepares a person for service and leadership.

The Department of Athletics endorses and supports the Grace College “Mission Statement” which states “Grace College is an evangelical Christian community of higher education which applies Biblical values in strengthening character, sharpening competence, and preparing for service.”

PRESIDENT AND PROVOST

Dr. Ron Manahan is the fifth President of Grace College and Seminary and has served Grace for more than 30 years. From 1977 to 1986 he held the position of professor of Biblical studies. From 1987 to 1990 he served as vice president of college academic affairs; from 1990 to 1993 as Provost; and from 1993 to January 1994 as acting President. He was appointed President by the Board of Trustees in January 1994.

He holds a Diploma from Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music, a B.A. from Shelton College, and M. Div., Th.M. and Th.D. Degrees from Grace Theological Seminary. He has also completed Post-Doctoral research at Union Theological Seminary.

Dr. Manahan has served on the Board of Directors of the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music, the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Inc., and Lakeland Christian Academy. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Kosciusko County Community Foundation, Foundation Ministries Inc., and Women’s Oncology Research Development Foundation, Inc. He is an author, lecturer, and educator. He is married to Barbara and is a father of two children: Kelly Manahan, M.D., and Nathan Manahan. He and Barbara have five grandchildren.

Dr. William Katip, Provost

11 years at Grace College • Grace College graduate 1974 • Debbie Katip (wife) Dr. William J. (Bill) Katip was born and raised in Pontiac, Mich., and is a 1974 graduate of Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind. (double major in Bible and Psychology). Bill is also a 1977 graduate of Purdue University where he earned his M.S. in Clinical Psychology. In 1986 he completed his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Michigan State University.

Bill’s professional background includes 34 years of college administration, teaching and counseling experience.

His experience includes College Admissions, Student Life and Academic Affairs. Bill lived in Beaver Falls, PA from 1989 to 2007 and served for 10 years as the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Robert Morris University. In June, 2007 Bill moved to Indiana and became the Provost at Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind.

While living in Western Penn., Bill served on the Allegheny County Board of the Salvation Army and was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Advisory Board for the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a Board member of Beaver County Christian School and Grace College (Winona Lake, Ind.).

Bill enjoys water skiing, bowling, and spending time with his family. Occasionally he resurrects a part of his past and plays the piano, trumpet, or French horn. Bill celebrated the 35th anniversary of his marriage to Debbie Cahill Katip in July of 2009, and he is the father of four children. His oldest son, Mike, is a 30-year-old married Robert Morris University graduate. Scott is a 26-year-old married graduate of Robert Morris University, and twins (Adam and Holly) are 21-year-old juniors at Grace College.

Chad Briscoe, Director of Athletics

Third year at Grace College • Anderson University graduate 1996 • Jamie Briscoe (wife) brought in the largest recruiting class in the history of the men’s basketball program and helped the Golden Tornadoes reach the post-season both years.

Prior to Geneva College, he spent two years on the men’s basketball staff under former Head Coach Tim Buckley at NCAA Div. I Ball State University and also taught in the Physical Education Department. At Ball State, Briscoe helped the Cardinals achieve double figures in conference wins in the Mid-American Conference while reaching the MAC post-season tournament both years.

Briscoe was a standout player at Anderson University from 1991-95. Following graduation, Briscoe continued his basketball career overseas, playing professionally in Sweden. He played six years for Fackelbararna, Nassjo, and Bankeryd of the Division I Pro League of Sweden. During his playing days in Sweden, he also coached for four years and served as the head coach during the 2000-01 season at Sanda High School, which is a prep school for basketball. During that year at Sanda, eight of his student-athletes secured NCAA Div. I scholarships or signed professional contracts within Europe.

He also has been involved with professional baseball, working with the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball team as a part of their minor league system from 1998-2000. He served as the General Manager for the Pulaski Rangers in the Appalachian League. Briscoe was honored when the Rangers were selected as the Organization of the Year in 1999.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Anderson University in 1996 and his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Ball State University in 2006. Chad and his wife Jamie have one child, Kate.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

In August 2007, Grace College embarked on a new era of athletics when Chad Briscoe was named the director of athletics. Briscoe, entering his third full year as the director of athletics at Grace, has already made a tremendous impact in his first two years.

Grace Athletics has undergone a change of culture under Briscoe’s leadership. During his first two years, the Lancers have achieved a higher degree of athletic excellence. The men’s basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight at the NAIA National Tournament in 2008 and 2009, the women’s tennis program enjoyed its most successful season in history in 2008, and women’s soccer recorded its best start ever with 10 straight wins in 2009.

He was instrumental in hiring six new head coaches, pioneering a new athletic Web site, and implementing a specific athletic recruiting day known as Red & White Day, which hosts potential student-athletes and parents on campus. The NCCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship was hosted at the Orthopaedic Capital Center for the first time in March 2009. Briscoe also emphasized deepening the Grace student-athlete’s relationship with Christ. His warm, genuine personality coupled with a passion for incorporating Christ into the athletic realm has been contagious.

Briscoe came to Grace from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn., where he served as the assistant director of athletics and head assistant men’s basketball coach.

He also taught in the Sports Management and Physical Education Department. During his time at Geneva, he

Andria Harshman Assistant Director of Athletics Andria Harshman is in her second year at Grace College, serving as both the Assistant Director of Athletics and the head volleyball coach. Prior to coming to Grace, Harshman was on the volleyball staff at the University of Notre Dame and has been a head volleyball coach at the high school level for five years. Harshman is a 2002 graduate of Grace College with a degree in Secondary Education. While at Grace, she was a member of the volleyball, track and field and basketball teams. Andria and her husband Brian have one son, Gaige.

Dr. Michael Harstine Faculty Athletic Rep. Dr. Michael Harstine is in his second year as the FAR for the Grace College athletic teams. Harstine is a 1990 graduate of Grace College, and is currently an Associate Professor of Business and the Director of the Orthopaedic Scholar Institute. Prior to returning to Grace, Harstine was the VP of Marketing at SYM Financial Corporation from 2000-2002. For nine years prior, he served as the VP of Marketing and Physician Services at Kosciusko Community Hospital. Harstine and his wife Julie have two children and live in Winona Lake.

Dr. Mark Soto Game Scorekeeper Dr. Mark Soto enters his 13th season as the Lancer scorekeeper. Dr. Soto is a professor of Biblical Studies in the College and Seminary and also is the Coordinator of the Distance Education Program.

Steve Copeland Sports Information Assistant Steve Copeland, a junior from Plainfield, Ind., has worked in the athletic department for three years. His is majoring in journalism and Bible. Copeland is the sports editor for Grace’s student newspaper and writes stories for the Web site.

Adam Basinger Sports Information Assistant Adam Basinger is a junior from Lima, Ohio. He is majoring in business administration, accounting and sport management. He is a statistician/photographer for Grace and a videographer for the volleyball team.

Josh Neuhart Sports Information Assistant Josh Neuhart is junior from Avon, Ind. He is a journalism and Bible double-major and has been working in the athletic department for three years.

Neuhart manages the Web site and covers sports for Grace’s student newspaper.

MEN’S SEASON PREVIEW

One season ago, Grace College’s men’s basketball team finished 2211 (11-5 Mid-Central College Conference), making its second straight Elite Eight appearance in the NAIA national tournament. This year, after losing 34.6 ppg from graduates Eric Gaff and Michael Wienhorst, the Lancers will need some new faces to step up in a big way if Grace is to continue its winning ways.

“This team will have to come of age,” said 33-year head coach Jim Kessler. “Several players are going to get an opportunity that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

It’s about who steps up to the challenge.”

Grace will add stability from last year with three returning starters, led by senior forward David Swanson who recorded 12 double-doubles last season (13.5 ppg and 9.2 rpg) and guards Kyle Plumlee and David Henry, who will bring consistency to a deep guard rotation. However, injuries to wingmen Jake Peattie and Dayton Merrell, who were slotted to share time at the small forward position, will shake up the lineup at the start of the season. According to Kessler, both players hope to return to the lineup at some point during the course of the season.

Sophomore Duke Johnson will play a significant role this year in trying to fill Gaff ’s NAIA All-American shoes. Johnson’s 6’11” frame gives the team rebounding and a defensive presence which also takes pressure off Swanson on the offensive end. “( Johnson’s) perimeter shot and in-

The Grace College men’s basketball program has been identifiable by one common trend over the last 32 seasons -- head coach Jim Kessler. “Coach K,” beginning his 33rd season at the helm of Lancer basketball program, is just eight wins shy of 600 victories with a career record of 592-466. He is tied for 11th among active coaches in the NAIA for coaching victories.

It is the journey, not the destination, that keeps Kessler around the game of basketball. In his fourth decade as the Lancers’ basketball coach, Kessler enjoys not only the practices, but also the opportunity to see the impact Christ has on the players he coaches. It has been his mission of the past 30-plus years to help his players grow in their faith through mission trips, community service projects, inseason outreach opportunities and Lancer basketball camps. As a result, in 2005 Kessler was given the first ever NAIA Coach of Character award, given to one coach across all sports in the NAIA who exhibits the values that the NAIA embraces—respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Last year, Kessler was inducted into the inaugural Grace College Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the MCC Coach

of the Year at the end of the season. Other awards include: NAIA Coach of the Year (1992), NCCAA Coach of the Year (1982, 1992) and NCCAA Hall of Fame (1994).

Kessler has led the Lancers on multiple international mission trips over the years, including trips to the Philippines, Bahamas, Egypt, Germany, France and Kenya.

He has made extensive contributions on Grace’s campus by establishing campus projects that have raised funds for the college library and for other equipment and programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life at Grace. In the local community, Kessler has organized annual tournaments to benefit local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund. For his contributions to the lives of youth in the Warsaw community, Kessler received the 2005 Pete Thorne Memorial Award. In 2006, he received the NABC Guradians of the Game National Award for Service.

Kessler is a 1970 graduate of Grace College where he had a four-year playing career with the Lancer men’s basketball team. He is married to Susanne and the couple has four daughters -- Kim, Sarah, Jenny, and Janelle, four sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren. Kessler and his wife reside in Winona Lake, Ind.

Jon Yeh, Assistant Coach

8th season at Grace College • Eastern Nazarene College head coach (2004-2007) • Illinois Wesleyan University graduate • 15 years of coaching experience During his time at Grace, Yeh recruited four Indiana Top 40 workout participants (Abernethy, Springer, M. Moore, and K. Johnson). He helped lead the Lancers to a second-place finish in the NCCAA National Tournament, and the team improved their record every year except one. He also recruited the nucleus of players that led Grace to their back-to-back NAIA Elite Eight finishes in 2008 and 2009.

“It’s very exciting to return to a basketball program and an institution that I know so well. In addition, I’m looking forward to working with the student-athletes, having coached some of them at Lancer Camp.”

Mark Delaney, Assistant Coach

1st season at Grace College • Ashland University graduate 2006 • 6 years coaching experience Mark Delaney joins the Grace Lancers’ coaching staff for the 2009-10 season. He comes to Winona Lake from Northern State University, where he was a graduate assistant for a year under legendary coach Don Meyer.

Prior to Northern State, Delaney was the head coach/athletic director at Monclova Christian High School (Ohio) for a year. His extensive resume includes being an assistant coach at Cedarville University for a year, an assistant coach at Ashland High School for two years, and the head freshman coach at Wooster High School for a year.

MEN’S COACHING STAFF

Yeh returns to the ranks of the Lancers basketball staff this season after a three-year head coaching stint at Eastern Nazarene College. He was an assistant coach under Jim Kessler from 1999-2006 at Grace College. While at Eastern Nazarene, Yeh led the program to its most wins in six years in 2008-09, won the Commonwealth Coast Conference Sportsmanship award twice, and recruited players who won conference Rookie of the Week honors three times in his last two seasons.

“I know I have grown tremendously as a coach in the three years I was away from Grace,” Yeh said. “I look forward to blending my experience with that of Coach Kessler and Coach Zawlocki to help keep Grace as an elite program.”

Don Zawlocki, Assistant Coach

5th season at Grace College • Bethel graduate 1982 • 27 years coaching experience • NCCAA All-American 1982 Don Zawlocki enters his fifth season on the Grace coaching staff. Coach “Z” brings a wealth of experience to the practice floor and sideline for the Lancers with over 20 years of coaching at the Indiana high school level.

A majority of his responsibilities include working with post players along with the Lancers defensive attack. Coach Zawlocki is currently a high school math teacher at Whitko High School. He and his wife have one son, Danny, and the family resides in South Whitley, Ind.

Kyle Plumlee

kyle plumlee Fifth-year senior and captain Kyle Plumlee enters his final year at Grace College. Kyle began his college career at Manchester College. In his sophomore year at Manchester, he started in eight games and shot 83 percent from the free throw line. He finished the season ranked third on the team in assists and fourth on the team in steals. In his first season of play with the Lancers last year, Plumlee played in 32 games and scored in double figures in six of those games. Senior captain David Swanson returns for his final season in a Lancer uniform.

He enters the 2009-10 season as a main scoring threat as well as a key post player.

Swanson has appeared in every contest throughout his tenure with the Lancers (104 games).

In his career, Swanson scored in double figures in 37-of-104 career games, and collected 16 career double doubles. He was named 3rd Team All-Conference in the MCC, NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete and NABC Honors Court member his junior year. He was named team Rookie of the Year his freshman year. With a productive senior year, Swanson will become the 41st Lancer to add his name to the 1,000 point club and will most likely record his name on the top ten rebounding list.

David Henry enters the 2009-10 season as a veteran playing in all 69 contests in two years at Grace. He has seen action in both of the Lancer Elite Eight tournament runs. He has stepped into a leadership role as an all-around contributor by nearly doubling every statistical category from his freshman year to his sophomore year. Henry has led the team two years in a row in free throw percentage with a career-average of 84 percent, ranking him fourth all-time. Henry scored a careerhigh 19 points against both Indiana Tech and Taylor University last season. He averaged 8.7

Stephen Kaufman returns in a Lancer uniform for his junior year.

In his freshman season, he saw minutes in 12 games before a shoulder injury sidelined him. Before the injury, he recorded eight points while pulling down seven rebounds. As a sophomore, Stephen played in 17 contests. He connected on 7-of-18 shooting which totaled 39 percent. He shot 75 percent from the free throw line a year ago. He netted 17 points Year Frosh.

Duke Johnson

Derek “Duke” Johnson enters his second season with the Lancers.

Last year he was named to the MCC All-Newcomer Team.

Johnson saw action in all 33 games as a freshman. He dropped in 216 points, averaging 6.6 points per game. He scored a career-high 20 points going 9-of-9 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in Grace’s win against Indiana Tech.

Duke recorded double figures in scoring six times, four of which were against conference opponents. He pulled down 115 rebounds on the season with an average of 3.5 per game. During the NAIA Tournament, he had a big game against Black Hills State and scored 17 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked one shot. Dayton Merrell returns to the Lancers for his sophomore year. Last season, he came off the bench and recorded minutes in all 33 games.

Dayton shot 39 percent from the field going 48-of-122. He scored a career high 19 points against Indiana Tech where he shot 78 percent (7-9) from the field.

For the season, Merrell contributed 132 points averaging 4.0 points per game. He ranked third on team in three point percentage at 34 percent. In his first season, he shot 22-29 from the free throw line for 76 percent ranking him second on the team. Dayton pulled down 50 Year Frosh.

Lee Ross

Lee Ross comes to the men’s basketball lineup after redshirting last season. He is coming off a preseason wrist injury, but is already back in the lineup. In high school, Lee was a starter for the South Bend Riley Wildcat team that was the 2008 SemiState Runner-up. He averaged 12 points per game as a senior.

Ross was selected Student of the Month multiple times while attending South Bend Riley.

Nick Achille joins his high school teammate Lee Ross in a Lancer uniform this year. Achille was a two-year varsity player at South Bend Riley High school. He helped his team make it to the state semi-final in his junior season. Achille averaged 12.5 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game during his senior year. He had a career game where he scored 20 points, dished out seven assists, and grabbed eight rebounds.

He led his team in free-throw percentage at 96 percent as well as winning the Most Improved Player award in his senior season.

Danny Goins

Daniel Goins comes to the Lancers out of Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Goins averaged 10.2 points per game, 3.1 steals per game and dished out 3.4 assists per game in his senior season.

He was a two-time All-Conference academic team member and played in the Ohio Division I All-Star game this past year. While at Winton Woods, Goins played football all four years and

started at defensive back during his junior and senior years.

Coach K: “Daniel comes to Grace as a high school starter from a storied program in Cincinnati. Danny hails from a family with a great basketball tradition and possesses the same athleticism and skill that give him great promise as a college point guard. His ability to turn the corner and get to the hoop, score off the dribble, or pull up from long range paint a bright future for him.

Like other young players, his ability to contain penetration and defend the basketball will determine his ultimate contribution to the 2009-10 Lancers.”

Jay Hinkel Jay Hinkel comes into a Lancer uniform out of Lawton, Mich. A graduate of Mattawan High School, Hinkel is a sixfoot two-inch guard who shot 85 percent from the free throw line as a senior at Mattawan. Jay was a member of the National Honor Society in high school.

He was named All-Academic Big 16 during his senior year. During his time at Mattawan, Jay played football as well as basketball.

Taylor Long joins the Lancers out of Warsaw Community High School. Long was a two-year starter for the Tigers who went 33-12 during that time with a sectional championship coming in his junior year. During his senior season with the Tigers, Long shot 82 percent from the free throw line and 46 percent from behind the threepoint line. He averaged 4.8 points per game on 58 percent shooting from the field. He received the Men’s Basketball Senior Award at Warsaw Community last season. He was selected as the Most Improved Player his junior year. He was also selected as a Scholar Athlete in his time at Warsaw. In 2004, Taylor traveled to Kenya, Africa, with the Lancer basketball team and coaching staff.

Coach K: “Taylor is a ‘get done’ kind of player. He is very fundamentally sound and plays a near errorless game.

If you watch carefully, you soon realize that the team he plays with wins a high percentage of the time because he unselfishly brings out the best in others.

He is a hard worker and a good addition to our team.”

TANNAN PETERS Peters was the second leading scorer at Huntington North last year, averaging 10 points per game. He finished with 208 points his senior season with a career-high of 23 points. He pulled down 85 rebounds and led the team in rebounding with 5.3 per game. He recorded an 82 percent free throw percentage going 28-of-34 on the year. He shot 32-for-109 from beyond the arc his senior year. During his junior season, Peters shot 43 percent from thee-point range, connecting on 42-of-108 attempts. He was named North Central Conference Student-Athlete of the Week as a senior, and he participated in the Nancy Rehm All-Star Classic workout during his senior year.

Peters will add size and athleticism to the Lancers roster.

Coach K: “Tannan presents a classic match up challenge to our opponents. He can hit the 3-pointer, yet at six-foot-six, can play inside with his back to the basket. He has excellent passing skills and has a good feel for the game. He grew up on tough competition at Huntington North and has a package that makes him a valuable piece in the Lancers’ future.

Tannan is a quality young man with a good upside as he learns to use his size and skill to his advantage.”

Coach K: “Elliot is one of the guys on the team who never gives up. He has a little fire in his belly. If he is up by 10, he is not happy until he is up by 20. If he is up by 20, he is not happy until he is up by 30. He is only a freshman, but he has that competitive quality in him that will make him a steady contributor.”

Nathan VanDuyne

Nathan VanDuyne will suit up in a Lancer uniform to begin his college career. In high school, he was named the 2008 Wabash County Player of the Year. VanDuyne graduated from Northfield High School where he scored 789 career points. During his senior season with the Norsemen, he averaged 13.1 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, and 1.4 assists per game.

Nathan was named 1st Team All-Conference in the Three Rivers Conference in both his junior and senior seasons. VanDuyne led his team to a 2008 Sectional Championship as well as a 2008 Regional Final appearance. He was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player two times during his career at Northfield and hopes to

bring energy to the Lancers.

Coach K: “You could make a training video with his fundamentals in the post. He is a consistent hard worker who maximizes his ability while playing in the land of the giants which helps to offset his lack of height. He is a great teammate and a terrific Christian young man who represents Grace College basketball well.”

2010 NCCAA Women’s National Tournament Grace College and the Orthopaedic Capital Center will play host for the second consecutive year to the NCCAA Women’s National Tournament on March 11-13. The eightteam tournament welcomes elite teams from seven different regions of the United States, all with an eye on a national championship.

The NCCAA is an association of Christ-centered collegiate institutions whose mission is to use athletic competition as an integral component of education, evangelism and encouragement. The NCCAA serves its members by setting association standards, developing communication resources, providing regional and national competition, as well as partnering in outreach to surrounding communities and to the world. The NCCAA is committed to equipping student-athletes and coaches to make a positive impact for Christ.

The national tournament also features a unique service project. All of the teams will have the chance to work with local organizations in serving the community of Winona Lake and Warsaw, Ind.

MCC AND THE NCCAA

It is the purpose and function of the Mid-Central College Conference to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program. The MCC seeks to maintain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The MCC encourages its member schools to keep athletics in the proper perspective by stressing the supporting role of athletics in the total education process. It emphasizes dedication to academic achievement above athletic excellence. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership.

the frontcourt, last year’s struggle can be a strength.

“We have added a lot of depth to our inside play,” Blum said. “Boykin brings that defensive punch, and Emily brings that toughness. I think our strength this year will be our post play.”

Up-Tempo Offense For the post players to have an impact, however, they have to be able to get up and down the floor in the Lady Lancers’ run-and-gun style of offense.

“My post players know they need to sprint down the floor,” Blum said.

“It’s not a point of ‘can they do it?’ It’s a point that they have to.”

That’s where six newcomers and a deeper bench comes into play.

“We want to run the floor and get them tired,” Eley said. “We just want to beat up on the other team the whole game. That’s the whole point of having a deeper bench. Now, we can go hard the whole time because someone can back you up.”

Junior Kiera Gray and sophomores Hannah Lengel and Kate Ball will most likely start in the backcourt

for Grace.

Gray led the team with 14.6 ppg last year, her forte lying in her ability to penetrate. Lengel and Ball will have more of a scoring role this year in the absence of a pure spot-up shooter.

“Kate will be our number one option in shooting the three’s,” Blum continued. “I want her to be in lock-and-load position.

She has the green light, and I think that will make her more comfortable.”

Blum has also encouraged Lengel, who led the Lady Lancers in three-point percentage last year, to shoot more.

Junior Autumn Heflin, a transfer from Sinclair Community College, will also play a significant role for the Lady Lancers. She scored more than 300 points and averaged 8.7 ppg at Sinclair. “Autumn is the silent assassin,” Blum said. “She can play defense, and she is one of the best passers I’ve seen.”

Junior co-captain Morgan DiAntonio is also one of Grace’s best passers. She led the Lady Lancers with 73 assists last season and will complement Lengel at the point guard position.

Overall, Blum hopes the depth of this year’s team can help push the women’s basketball program over the edge in several lofty categories.

“We put some high expectations on ourselves,” Blum continued. “But we think we can achieve our goals if we stick to our game plan.”

WOMEN’S SEASON PREVIEW

The starting lineup may have several familiar faces, but all in all, this year’s women’s basketball team is much different than the squad that finished 10-25 one year ago.

Blum added more personnel with three freshmen and three transfers.

But he also reinforced strategies by stressing defense, postplay and an up-tempo offense.

Defense One of Grace’s goals this season is to finish in the top four in the MidCentral College Conference. For that to happen, Blum noted that it is necessary to improve their defense. Last year, Grace gave up nearly 69 points a game while averaging 62 themselves.

“We lost a lot of games last year in the final 6-7 minutes,” Blum said. “But if we are right around that 60-point range we will be okay. We have made it a mindset that we have to defend.”

Post-Play Whenever lone senior and cocaptain Demetria Eley got in foul trouble last year, Blum was frequently left with only two post players to work with, sophomores Kayla Skaggs and Hayley Cashier.

Although all three averaged around 10 ppg, three post players were not enough to run a consistent offense, especially if fouls or injuries became a factor.

So this year, Blum added two much-needed post players—freshman Emily Bidwell and Indiana Tech transfer Danielle Boykin. Now armed with a five-player rotation in

He has accumulated a 44-103 (12-68 MCC) coaching record at Grace and looks to improve upon last season’s 10-25 record.

The Lady Lancers have increased their win total in every season except one under Blum’s coaching.

Blum, a 1993 graduate of Grace College, is no stranger to the game of basketball. He is a former NAIA All-American and NCCAA Player of the Year from his playing days as a Lancer under Coach Jim Kessler.

In high school, Blum scored 1,576 career points at Oregon-Davis and became the only player to have his number retired in school history. He then played two seasons at Valparaiso University before transferring to Grace for his final two seasons, leading Grace to a 59–11 record in those years. He was a starting guard for the Lancers’ 1992 NAIA National Championship team.

While his playing pedigree is exemplary, Blum has also shown he knows how to work the sideline, as well. In his first stint as an interim head coach at Indiana Wesleyan University in 1995, Blum led the men’s team to an NC- men’s basketball team.

Blum and his wife Michelle reside in Warsaw, Ind., and CAA National Championship. Skip Forbes enters his fourth season with the women’s basketball team as an assistant coach. However, he is no stranger to Grace basketball, as he was the men’s assistant coach from 1983 to 1995, which included an NAIA National Championship team in 1992.

Coach Forbes earned an engineering degree at Broome College and was a religious studies professor at Grace prior to retiring two summers ago. He and his wife Carol reside in Winona Lake, Ind.

DEMETRIA ELEY Demetria Eley returns to the Lady Lancer lineup as the lone senior and co-captain. As a freshman, “D” was selected to the MCC AllNewcomer Team and was selected as an NAIA Player of the Week. In her second year with the Lady Lancers, she had a career-high 26 points in back-to-back games. In the same season, Eley was honored by being selected MCC All-Conference Honorable Mention and was selected as an NCCAA Second-Team All-American. During her junior season, Eley finished second in scoring Year Frosh.

Autumn Heflin joins the Lady Lancers as a junior transfer from Sinclair Community College. While at Sinclair, Heflin scored over 300 points and averaged 8.7 point per game. Her field goal percentage ranked her 21st in the National Junior College Athletic Association. She averaged 5.8 rebounds per game while collecting 3.2 steals per game. Heflin shot 85 percent from the free throw line for the Tartans. Heflin was named Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week and was selected to the OCCAC Third-Team All-Conference. Autumn is sure to bring some experience to the Lady Lancer roster.

BRITNY ADAMS Britny Adams comes to the Lady Lancers after spending her freshman year at Lincoln University (Pa.). During her freshman year at Lincoln, Adams averaged 4.7 points per game in 14 minutes per game. She shot 40 percent from behind the arc. She graduated from Bloomingdale High School where she set a school record with 1,056 points in her career. Adams averaged 19.6 points per game her senior year. She was a four-year starter at Bloomingdale and Team MVP in her junior and senior seasons. Adams was 1st Team All-Conference in her junior and senior years.

She owns the record for the most points in a game (38) and most three-point field goals in a career (86).

Danielle Boykin is a sophomore transfer from Indiana Tech.

Boykin went to Bonita Vista High School in San Diego, Calif., where she led her team to a league championship in her senior year. She was also named the Mesa League Player of the Year during that season. She received the Union Tribune award in her junior and senior seasons. As a freshman at Indiana Tech, Boykin averaged 6.3 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. She shot

Rianne Aguilar

Rianne Aguilar comes to the Lady Lancers from Marion, Ind. Aguilar went to Marion High School where she helped her team go 33-11 over the past two seasons. She averaged 11 points per game while pulling down five rebounds per game during her senior season. During her junior and senior years, she was named Team MVP as well as All-Conference Honorable Mention. Aguilar won the Unsung

Hero award during her sophomore season. While at Marion, she lettered in volleyball, softball and basketball.

Coach Blum: “She has a lot of potential to be a great guard in our conference. Rianne’s athletic ability to defend and get her shot off in traffic has been a joy to watch. She will only get better as the season goes along, and with more college playing experience she will gain confidence in her game.

I look for Rianne to contribute by using her size advantage on the offensive end and to make it difficult for her opponents to score on our defensive end. I love her toughness, heart and passion for the game.”

Emily Bidwell joins the Lady Lancers out of Pierceton, Ind. Bidwell graduated from Whitko High School where she averaged double figures in both points (12.6) and rebounds per game (11.6) during her senior year.

She recorded 243 rebounds, which set a singleseason school record. Bidwell was selected to the Three Rivers All-Conference Team as well as the Times-Union All-Area Team. She led her team to a Three Rivers Conference championship during her junior year, which was the first conference title in school history. Bidwell also ranks in the top-10 in five different categories for girls’ basketball at Whitko High School.

Coach Blum: “She is going to be a great asset to our program for four years. Once she gets

comfortable with the college game, she is going to be a force inside.

Emily, in her first year, is going to be called upon to rebound and to play solid defense in the lane. She is a relentless rebounder and plays hard at all times. Emily will continue to improve as the year goes along, and with dedication and work ethic, she is going to be a big contributor this season.”

Samantha Fields

Samantha Fields graduated from MadisonGrant High School where she averaged 8.0 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game during her senior season. She was also a captain and led her team in assists with 6.0 per game her last season.

In high school, she lettered in both softball and basketball. Fields will also be playing softball for the Lady Lancers in the spring. She was the starting shortstop for Madison-Grant, who won the 2A state championship this past year, their first one in school history.

Coach Blum: “She has been a blessing to our program. I love her work ethic every day in practice. She plays hard, is always encouraging and has a willing heart to learn something each day

1st year at Grace College • Grace graduate 2006 • Kyle Carter (husband) Carter served as the head coach for Warsaw’s junior varsity squad from 2006-08. She finished 2008 as the varsity head coach, leading the program through a transition for a new head coach. Her squads earned multiple awards and had a reputation of always being disciplined and structured.

“We look forward to Jenna leading our Cheer Team program,” said Grace Athletic Director Chad Briscoe.

“She was very impressive in the interview process and brings a passion to impact students’ lives for Christ.”

CHEER TEAM

This fall, the Grace College Athletic Department announced the hiring of Jenna Carter as the new head coach for Grace’s cheer team.

Carter graduated from Grace College in 2006. Prior to accepting the head coaching job at Grace, Carter served on the cheerleading staff at Warsaw Community High School.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to lead the cheer program at Grace,” said Carter. “I look forward to working with student-athletes and to help build the program.”
