2016 preview: grace Women’s Soccer not satisfied with last year’s success Grace’s women’s soccer program has experienced a rejuvenation in the past decade, growing from an afterthought into a national contender under head coach Michael Voss. Last year the Lady Lancers put an exclamation point on the program’s rise by reaching the NAIA National Championships for the first time. But despite a myriad of milestones last year — winning an NAIA Opening Round match, posting a 15-3-3 record, finishing the year ranked No. 11 in the NAIA poll — Voss is far from satisfied. He has his sights set higher. “We want to go further. The achievements we experienced last year were the culmination of years of work behind it,” Voss said. “This team is eager to live up to the expectations that the past has set for us. They’re honored that they get to take over. This group is eager to take ‘possession-attacking futbol’ forward and help Grace become the best team in the nation.” Despite graduating several key pieces from last year’s groundbreaking roster, the Lady Lancers still return an experienced core in 2016. Grace’s defense will look to be a impenetrable force this fall. Junior goalkeeper Abby Schue ranked No. 6 in the nation last year with a 0.55 goals against average. She notched the thirdmost shutouts (11) in the NAIA thanks to a robust backline. Senior Maile Grout figures to play a key role in the midfield, according to

6

Voss. She has grown into a “complete 360 degree player” who has tremendous vision to connect Grace’s midfield. “[Grout] will be a key point for our team,” he added. Meredith Hollar headlines Grace’s attack after earning NAIA All-American status last season. The senior forward tied for the team lead with nine goals last fall, including six game-winning strikes. “Meredith [Hollar] is a powerful forward who continues to make improvements in her game. She’s an excellent teammate who is an absolute handful to defend.” Voss hopes Grace’s offense can be improved this year with a more lethal attack. Last season the Lady Lancers boasted an impressive resumé by beating seven teams who were ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA. But half of Grace’s wins on the season were by one goal. As a result, Voss noted that the team’s goalscoring ability needed to improve this fall. “We won games by narrow margins last year,” he said. “We need to do a better job of scoring goals and putting

teams away.” To reach Grace’s aspirations, the team will need to maintain unity. The returning core must quickly mesh with a large incoming class if Grace is to replicate last year’s success, according to Voss. Joining Grace this year are seven newcomers. Sophomore Flavia Villaça de Faria and freshmen Isabel Applequist, McKenna Cruz, Olivia Johnson, Joana Schimmel, Liz Van Wormer and Corinne Villalobos complete a talented, dynamic group. “We need a strong unity and a resolve that does not waver. It shouldn’t matter who we play. We need to play at our potential. We set our own standard and live up to that mark. That will be the biggest challenge for us. Everything else will take care of itself.”

head coach michael voss Head coach Michael Voss enters his 10th season at Grace as the program’s all-time winningest coach. Since accepting the job in 2007, Voss has aggressively recruited women who not only compete at a high level on the field, but who also have a passion for bringing glory to God. Voss’s trademarked soccer style of “possession-attacking futbol” has resulted in a complete revamp of Grace’s women’s soccer team, climaxing in a ground-breaking 2015 campaign. The Lady Lancers were ranked as high as No. 7 in the NAIA and qualified for NAIA Nationals for the first time in team history. Grace won its first NAIA tournament game (2-1) over Park and ended the season with a 15-3-3 record. During the 2015 season, Grace went undefeated in nonconference play, defeating the No. 2, No. 11 and No. 16-ranked teams in the process. From 2009-14, the Lady Lancers made five trips to the NCCAA National Championships in Kissimmee, Fla. The 2014 season saw Grace reach the NCCAA National Championship match. Voss holds the top six single-season marks in Grace’s program history. Voss’s successful recruiting has been on display as the team earned both the Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year awards from 2013-15. In 2012 a pair of Lady Lancer freshmen (Mallory Rondeau, Carianne Sobey) earned First Team NCCAA All-American honors. Rondeau was named the NCCAA National Player of the Year in 2014, and Sobey was an NAIA Third Team All-American in 2015. Additionally, the Lady Lancers under Voss have consistently been graded as one of the smartest teams in the nation. Over the past six years, Grace’s team GPA has never been lower than 3.60. The Lady Lancers’ team GPA ranked first across all NAIA women’s soccer programs in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 and was second in the NAIA in 2010 and 2014. Individually, the Lady Lancers have produced 39 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and seven CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-Americans since 2011. Voss’s desire to disciple the women of Grace’s soccer team is clearly seen in his organizing missions trips for the Lady Lancers. In the spring of 2014, Voss led his team to minister in Nicaragua. The team has also traveled to the Cayman Islands and to Peru. In March 2012, Voss was named an assistant coach for the Women’s National Team of Haiti. His three-year commitment included identification, training and development of Haiti’s WNT, U-20, U-17 and U-14 WNT. Prior to coming to Grace, Voss and his family worked as missionaries to the southern jungle of Belize, Central America. He coached the Toledo United Professional Futbol Club, fighting for a CONCACAF Champions Cup bid. Voss also worked at the Calvary Chapel Christian Schools in Murrieta, Calif.; from 1996-2005 he was the athletic director, the director of soccer and the head girls’ soccer coach. Voss started the soccer program and compiled a record of 102-51-17. Voss, who has earned six Coach of the Year honors, attended Santa Clara (Calif.) University from 1991-93 and was a member of the soccer team that finished 20-1-2 and was NCAA Div. I National Finalist in 1991. He would complete his undergraduate work at Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in 1996 studying religion with an emphasis in Biblical studies and Greek. He is licensed with a USSF “C” and an NSCAA “Advanced National Diploma.” He is a “Certified Athletic Administrator” from the NIAAA. Michael and his wife Summer live in Winona Lake, Ind., with their three boys, Justus, Cole, Landan, and their daughter, Kaina. 8

inside possession-attacking futbol Welcome to Grace College Women’s Soccer!! The team and coaching staff are simply stoked you are here!! Every person involved in our program wants you to know about Possession-Attacking Futbol -- what we are about and most importantly what we stand for. We are a university level soccer program in the United States of America who knows that we have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and that the punishment for that sin is death (Romans 6:23). However, we also know that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ because when we were still lost in our sin, he died for us, substituting his death in place of ours (Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8). Yet, that is not the whole story. Jesus rose from the grave and conquered death (Luke 24:6-7). Since we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Jesus was raised from the dead, we are saved (Romans 10:9-10). In this we have an eternal destination of heaven. This changes everything!! This is the beginning of Possession Attacking-Futbol. Since this is true, our desire is to demonstrate these truths found in the Bible through soccer. Our brand of Futbol is a considerate style. We desire to share the ball ridiculously and get everyone on the field involved. This is an extremely creative, demanding and dynamic style of intentional possession where every player attacks. Each player is vitally important. The idea is that you would see the Lord in the style we play and the personality of the players that play on the pitch; in quite simply the way we all go about playing this game….from hours before the match to way after the match. (1 Cor. 12) We want you to know Christ and have an eternal home in heaven!! Jesus is standing at the door and knocking. We want to encourage you, hear his voice! Open the door! He will enter your life and you will never be the same!! (Rev 3:20) This is the reason for OUR joy! There is a peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7) and a joy that is simply inexpressible (1 Peter 1:8-9) for those who have found their hope in Christ. This is why we are a part of Possession-Attacking Futbol and why we desire to “Ball it up!”

Kris, You did it! Its a joy to see you successfully complete this phase; you experienced soccer and education while building independence. You ploughed through assignments, schedules, fears, and challenges. Thank God for facetime, texting, streaming, and great weather – otherwise dad would’ve lost more hair! Know that your education is your passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. May the love and favour of our Lord Jesus Christ rest upon you. We are confident of this: that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. We love you: Dad, Mom, Chels

This is my prayer for you: that your love will grow more and more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love; that you will see the difference between what is important and what is not and choose what is important; that you will be pure and blameless for the coming of Christ; that your life will be full of the many good works that are produced by Jesus Christ to bring glory and praise to God.
