Maximise Site

Activiate the ground plane & entries to draw in public and create a visual shopfront for the design school. House both studio and staff on each level, both accessed through main atrium. Encourage cross fertilization between different faculties, collegiality and camaraderie between student and staff. As you move through the building you will glimpse all hustle and bustle of design.

Connect to Musk Avenue to create a delightful, inviting and accessible ground plane. Utilise the steep fall across the site to house lectures & workshops which require higher ceilings. Provide naturally ventilated access that celebrates views of kelvin grove and landscape

Orient the building to North to maximize pleasant morning sun. Deep veranda’s and Western facing screening to block the harsh afternoon sun.

Allow North-Eastern breezes to naturally ventilate balconies. Protect the South-East to South-West with screening. Minimise areas which require airconditioning

Refurbish and re-purpose heritage maisonettes and community building with long term studios, meeting rooms and workshops. Re-sculpt the landscape around the building to make the site accessible but also create a sanctuary in the small scale Dalton buildings.

Create a delightful way of moving through the building and encourages spontaneous interaction between the users.

Provide facilities to allow students to stay longer, casual spaces around formal learning that encourage spontaneous interaction. Eg. kitchenettes, computer labs, breakout space, cafe and long term studios

1. Take inspiration from the angular heritage form and propose new structures in a modern and coherent way to create a synergy between the old and new 2. Refurbish and re-purpose heritage maisonettes and community building with long term studios, meeting rooms and workshops.

3. Re-sculpt the landscape around the heritage building to make the site accessible but also create a sanctuary in the small scale Dalton buildings.

4. Integrate the materials pallette or the heritage site in a new way to create a delightful contrast between the old and new, whilst developing a unique sense of place 5. Play with Dalton’s idea of “Light, shade and shadow” to create and inviting facade with varying scales and qualities

Wagners Earth Friendly Concrete • Traditional concrete that uses a geopolymer binder system made from the chemical activation of two industrial waste by-products • Reduces the carbon emissions associated with normal Portland cement and also has a much lower embodied energy.
