As the school year begins and summer winds down, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us for this year’s SummerFest series. From start to finish, it was a season to remember - especially the unforgettable energy of our Wicked Sing-a-Long, where a lively, boisterous crowd made the evening truly magical. There’s nothing quite like summer nights on the shores of Lake St. Clair.
In other exciting news, we are proud to welcome three new members to our Board of Directors:
Brent Ott, Victor Peltola, and Eric Smith. Each brings a wealth of professional experience, and we look forward to the valuable contributions they will make as we continue to grow and strengthen our organization.
At the same time, we extend our heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Ed Russell, a long-serving board member whose dedication has left a lasting mark. Ed served as Treasurer in recent years and offered critical insight into several of our renovation projects. With his deep expertise in the building industry, Ed’s guidance helped keep us on the right path. We are deeply grateful for his service and will truly miss his leadership on the board.
Our upcoming fall events offer something for everyone—whether you're looking to honor the past, learn something new, or create unforgettable family memories.
On September 18, we continue our 50th Anniversary commemoration of the end of the Vietnam War with a compelling presentation by author and retired Navy Captain Randy Hotton, Flying the P-3 Orion: A Vietnam War Pilot’s Story. The series expands through a city-wide partnership as we welcome Elizabeth Partridge, author of Boots on the Ground, for a multi-venue book talk and Q&A throughout the Grosse Pointes. It’s a unique opportunity to engage with history through the lens of powerful storytelling.
For those who love the sights, smells, and flavors of fall, we’re thrilled to bring back a seasonal favorite - the Carriage House Market! And for fans of spooky fun, keep an eye out for our upcoming Halloween-themed events, including something for your furry friends!
Be sure to visit the Events & Experiences tab on our website for the latest details and updates. This fall promises to be meaningful, festive, and full of discovery at The War Memorial.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT
This fall, The War Memorial’s Vietnam War Commemoration Celebration continues with two powerful programs that reflect on the experiences of those who served and the lasting impact of the war on American life.
The first takes place on Saturday, October 4 at 10 a.m., when acclaimed author Elizabeth Partridge leads a community conversation about her 2018 book Boots on the Ground: America’s War in Vietnam
Partridge, 73, is the goddaughter of legendary Depression-era photographer Dorothea Lange and an award-winning author of biographies for both adults and young readers. Her books have profiled figures such as John Lennon, Woody Guthrie, and Lange herself. With Boots on the Ground, Partridge turns her lens to the Vietnam era, weaving together the voices of soldiers, nurses, and civilians to tell the deeply human story of a turbulent chapter in American history.
The commemoration continues the following month with a keynote address at The War Memorial’s Veterans Day Breakfast on November 11.
That morning, Medal of Honor recipient Jim McCloughan will share his remarkable story of service, sacrifice, and brotherhood.
McCloughan is one of only 61 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest recognition for valor in combat, and he is the only living recipient from Michigan.
"It's not about the medal, but the action that has produced the medal,"
“Every other chapter is about the politics that were going on during the war… I sought out powerful photographs to bring the story to life.”
The book intertwines personal accounts with the politics of the time, offering readers a layered perspective on the war. “Every other chapter is about the politics that were going on during the war,” Partridge explains. “I arranged it by timeline, weaving together the personal stories with what was happening nationally. And because so much of history is visual, I sought out powerful photographs to bring the story to life.”
For Partridge, bringing Boots on the Ground to The War Memorial is not just about recounting history, but about creating space to reflect and honor the men and women whose lives were shaped by Vietnam. “Part of this program is about remembering and honoring this time in history that is very personal,” she notes.
A former Army combat medic, McCloughan distinguished himself during the battle of Tam Ky, Vietnam, May 13–15, 1969. Over the course of three harrowing days, he repeatedly risked his life under fire and is credited with saving the lives of 10 Americans and one Vietnamese interpreter.
“It was a very horrific battle,” McCloughan recalls. “Nothing can prepare you to see what I saw as a medic. I made sure, when I could, that my men never had to see what I did.”
For McCloughan, the Medal of Honor is a reminder of the men he served beside. “It’s not about the medal, but the action that has produced the medal,” he reflects. “A lot of recipients call it a two-edged sword. It’s a humbling honor to receive it. I received it for 89 guys who fought in that battle.”
Together, these two programs invite our community to listen, reflect, and learn from voices who bring both the history and humanity of the Vietnam War into focus.
