The War Memorial’s mission has been the guiding force behind our 75 years of community engagement, cultural enrichment and civic pride.
The spacious Italian Renaissance-style home was built in 1910 for Marion and Russell A Alger, Jr It was designed by architect Charles A. Platt of New York and named “The Moorings.”
For the next two decades, “The Moorings” was the family headquarters for Russell, Marion, and their children, Josephine, Caroline (Fay), and Russell III, and for their wide range of business and charitable interests
After Russell’s death in 1930, the philanthropic Marion chose another way to enrich the communityby donating the entire estate In 1936, it became a temporary branch of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
In 1949, after the Alger’s grandson, Henry Chaney, Jr., died in World War II, a new focus was found, and the estate was formally dedicated as the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Associationa nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization - to serve as a perpetual memorial to those who served and died in World War II; and be a continuing center for educational, cultural, and charitable activities in the community.
Today, more than 75 years later, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association (more commonly known as The War Memorial) continues its pursuit as a unique community hub for southeast Michigan with a mission to honor those who served, to enrich our community, and to deliver exceptional experiences.
Programming takes place in all areas across our five-acre campus, welcoming approximately 100,000 individuals with over 3,000 functions annually, which include events to honor veterans, engagement experiences for adults and children, and a myriad of community events, family celebrations, and premier hospitality services

Our veterans are not just names in a history book. They are our fathers and our brothers, our mothers and our sisters, they are our friends and our neighbors. They are the heroes next door Their stories of sacrifice and courage must be preserved and shared with every generation so that we as a community may always be mindful of the selfless, brave individuals that are responsible for keeping our nation free
We accomplish this feat in multiple ways including the honor roll plaques we have on our walls and website, the Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge sculpture, our annual Memorial Day celebration, the military, historic and artistic exhibits in our gallery, our VetConnect Seminar Series and even more veteran focused events, giving our community a place to gather, reflect, and honor.

In 2025, The War Memorial will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War's end with a yearlong series titled "Conflict and Healing: Exploring the Legacy of the Vietnam War " The program will include militar and art exhibits, documentary films, author talks, health seminars, and a speech by a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient It will also feature legacy events like the Vietnam Veteran Luncheon, Memorial Day Ceremony, and Veterans Day Breakfast, along with our Vet-to-Vet meet-ups This initiative aims to bolster veterans and strengthen their supportive connections to each other and to the community they protected.

Memorial Day Ceremony*
May 26th, 2025
This time-honored ceremony will include musical tributes, remarks of remembrance and honor, and a recitation of the names of Grosse Pointe residents who lost their lives in service to our country
The War Memorial Veterans Committee has a goal to offer more initiatives and programs for veterans, from family events to seminars that are pertinent to those who have honorably served our country, and their loved ones.
March 27th, 2025
This special lunch honors National Vietnam War Veterans Day Veterans and their families are invited to gather, share stories, and express gratitude for their bravery and sacrifice during the Vietnam War in a supportive environment
September 11th, 2025
A solemn celebration of togetherness in the wake of tragedy. Moments of silence will be observed for the airplane crashes that hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, a field near Shanksville, PA, and for all lives lost on 9/11/2001.
November 11th, 2025
This annual tradition includes the presentation of thank-you notes handmade by local students, keynote remarks, and a gourmet breakfast We offer a space for local service-members to experience camaraderie over a meal together

A legacy program, serving students aged 7-12, Ski-Hi provides 7 weeks of transport for Grosse Pointe students to Pine Knob Resort in January & February Students can take ski lessons, or spend the evening on the slopes with friends Snowboarders welcome too!
Our summer mini-camps inspire children through activities like animation, space exploration, art, and self-defense These workshops foster independence and confidence, helping kids learn new skills, build friendships, and create lasting memories
All year long
The War Memorial offers engaging youth classes, including gymnastics, ballet, art, self-defense, cooking, and more. These programs inspire creativity, build confidence, and teach valuable skills in a fun and supportive environment.

On the second Saturday of the month, join us for a morning of themed crafts, games, performances, and family fun Second Saturdays are designed to offer a preview of our classes, camps, and programs while parents enjoy free coffee and kids burn off energy indoors on these winter mornings.

For many Metro-Detroit families, summertime means family fun on the lake and at The War Memorial, that means SummerFest! Our annual summer fun series will return with family-friendly concerts and movies on ou lakefront lawn. All SummerFest events are free and open to everyone from everywhere! Bring your lawn cha blanket, or enjoy from your boat All events are rain or shine In the event of inclement weather, events will take place in the War Memorial Ballroom

A delightful Sunday brunch with your family and a special visit from the Easter Bunny! Afterward, head to the back lawn for an unforgettable Helicopter Egg Drop, where kids can hunt for colored eggs to exchange for treats and prizes
