What an amazing year 2020 turned out to be. As I write this article, we are in the middle of a pandemic having weathered drought, bushfires, storms and floods. School virtually closed for over four weeks and many students were home learning for much longer. We were closed for a day at the end of Term 2 due to a suspected COVID-19 case – thankfully it proved negative.
We have learnt a lot. As a school we managed the shut-down well and supported families with online and paper-based learning quickly and smoothly. We recognised the value of our IT system and the team who support it. We have learnt to do more things via video and online yet still appreciate and love face to face interactions.
We launched our new Core Purpose Statement and Graduate Profile and it has proved timely. The community have embraced it and there is a renewed sense of purpose and excitement about what we do as a school. We are learning to allow this purpose to shape every activity and guide our planning for students. New families are being attracted to the school as we share our vision for how we can partner with them.
Our students have done well to cope with such a topsyturvy year. Our Year 12’s faced a lot of uncertainty over the HSC, but as things got back to normal and due to the support we offered during the shutdown, they have risen to the challenge and we look forward to them doing well.
So many of our usual activities have been affected by the pandemic, especially our sporting program.
While some codes (Basketball and Oztag) were able to start up again, some were not. Our usual THACCCSA, CSSA and CIS sports events were all cancelled, denying students the opportunity to compete. We did get to hold our Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, however the Cross-Country Carnivals were victims of the situation. However, it was great to see the resilience of our students, and new physical games have sprung up in the playground to substitute.
Academically, we saw the Primary teachers working with the Association of Independent Schools on an early literacy project and we launched a blended learning trial across the school, seeking to learn lessons from our home learning experience.
The events of the year have led to a strengthening of the partnership between home and school and it bodes well for the future as we seek to implement our motto of equipping students for a flourishing and purposeful life. The people recorded in these pages have been through a once in a lifetime experience and our prayer is that the result is a strengthening of their character and a determination to overcome future obstacles as they seek to fulfil their purpose under God.
Mr Phillip NashCRITERIA: This Cup is awarded to a student who most typifies the goals we have as a school for our students. This is a person who exhibits Godly character, is collaborative, a committed learner in all circumstances, is creative and learning how to think critically, who is socially engaged with their relationships characterised by service to and care for others.
In early 2020 Principal Phillip Nash released a revised Core Purpose Statement and Mission Goals for Green Point Christian College. This was a result of a Vision Taskforce that was formed and met throughout 2019 to review and develop the Core Purpose and Mission Goals for GPCC. The key statements are as follows:
CORE PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The purpose of GPCC is to equip students for a life of redemptive action through a holistic education grounded in a Biblical perspective.
MISSION GOALS:
1. Students: The formation of students who display the attributes of the GPCC Graduate Profile.
2. Staff: The development of quality staff who serve our students well.
3. Parents: The support of families as the cornerstone of a flourishing society.
MOTTO:
In order for our students to be shaped in accordance with our Graduate Profile, our teachers (and staff) must model what this looks like. Thus, a Teacher Profile was developed that includes all the elements of the Student Profile plus more that are specific to the task of teaching. Whatever the Year level or subject area they teach in, each GPCC teacher will be helped to develop the characteristics below:
1. Godly in Character – growing in faith, engaged in a local Church, Biblically literate;
2. Collaborative – works well with colleagues, students and parents;
3. Strong Presence – listens actively, shows empathy, is patient, engaging, dynamic, enthusiastic, manages the classroom well, is adaptable, organised and clear, sets high expectations, instils confidence, and is well-prepared;
4. Life-long Learner – practices self-regulation, knows the content and how to teach it, engages in regular professional learning;
5. Creates a Supportive and Safe Environment – provides quality feedback, knows students and how they learn, displays pastoral care and concern for student welfare;
6. Uses a Range of Strategies – plans for and implements effective teaching and learning tools;
7. Values Real-World Learning – applies it through learning opportunities;
8. A Creative & Critical Thinker – reflective, innovative, discerning, encourages new ideas and innovative approaches, fosters risk-taking in student learning;
9. Socially Engaged – with students in co-curricular activities, mission and service opportunities, has their own commitment to social engagement outside of school.

During this year there has been many ups and downs, however we have grown closer together as a school community, both teachers and students, to provide support for one another during these uncertain times. Although online schooling was not ideal, we believe that our College has maintained the solid foundations for prioritising learning to the best of their ability. As College Captains, our roles in leadership have been unlike any other year. However, through this we have learnt life skills that have allowed us to adapt to this year’s dynamic nature, as well as being able to constantly plan and create new ideas in which we can uplift the rapport of the school community. We have learnt how to strengthen the school community through collaborative actions and further develop the importance of being there for one another, providing a place of support for those in need. Overall, although the struggles of this year have been tough, we believe as a Year 12 cohort we are now equipped to face further challenges that life throws at us.
Cody Battle and Felicity Bath (Year 12 Captains)
Throughout teaching and learning, we often speak to students about having a growth mindset, we encourage them to try new methods of finding answers, to not give up, to persevere. Never has this been more practically applied than throughout 2020. Students as young as five years old have “aimed high” and mastered the art of virtual class meetings, while discovering the importance of self-motivation and resilience during learning in what has been an unprecedented time for education. Our students embraced a blended learning model that will further equip them as they move through Primary and into Secondary. Our amazing students adapted to new routines and hygiene protocols, faced disappointment with optimism and even learnt new vocabulary such as social distancing, swab and sanitiser. What a year it has been.
Although our co-curricular activities this year have been limited, the opportunities we have had were rich. Our school leaders attended the National Young Leaders’ Day and consequently used their gifts to creatively lead our Chapel services, both live and over video. Collaboratively, each student participated in the creation of a Genesis mural for NAIDOC. We have utilised the facilities and expertise in our Secondary Science, English and Creative Arts Faculties to enrich our learning and have seen students excel in academic programs, including STEM, Maths Olympiad, Robotics and NESA WriteOn competition, with two students receiving Gold and Silver awards for excellence in writing.
Through our Chapel services and daily devotion times, students have focused on the five attributes of our Graduate Profile, learning what it means to be; Godly in Character, Collaborative, Creative & Critical Thinkers, Socially Engaged and a Life-long Learner. May God continue to build on these foundations as our students grow and develop.
Mrs Nicole SmithIt was an early start on the train for the awesome Young Leaders’ Day. My favourite speaker was John Coutis. He was so enthusiastic and spoke about the challenges without having legs and how he overcomes everything with enthusiasm. Thomas Goodwin
I had a truly amazing day. Some of my favourite things that the speakers said was to believe in myself, that I have value and I can make a difference. I am encouraged to share this message with other students, that God has made them perfectly. Bella Turner
Attending the Young Leaders’ Day was a perfect opportunity to learn and become a better leader. Thank you teachers for organising such an event. Micah Ricardo

Kyne:
Q. How has COVID-19 affected you?
Eloise:
Thank you so much for your continued support and advice. We are so very fortunate to have a wonderful community and ethos at GPCC. What has been a very difficult time in our lives, has been handled in such a professional and humane way. Our leaders and our teachers need to be commended for such a wonderful and patient approach. We sincerely appreciate you, from the bottom of our hearts … thank you.
A. Honestly, I think it’s been really good because I’ve gotten to spend a lot more time with my family and sister and brother, and I’ve made friends with people that I probably wouldn’t have, which is something good.
Kyne:
Q. It’s a pretty hard time for many people. How did you become a Christian?
Eloise:
A. I think I became a Christian when I was in Year 3. Mrs Boyd was teaching me and I was telling her that I was unsure of God and stuff. Mrs Boyd said “you know I’m going to help you through this” and every day she talked to me and chatted with me about the Bible and stuff. And then one day I said, "you know, I think I'm ready to believe in God."
Kyne:
Q. They are great friends and great teachers aren’t they? Would you like to give the Primary students any advice?
Eloise:
A. Probably my one thing for you guys is to just keep trusting in God because He is here for you and He has a plan for you.
ONLINE LEARNING IS BETTER THAN SCHOOL LEARNING –NOAH
HILLI strongly believe that online learning is much better than school learning. These are my reasons why.
Firstly, I know that online learning is better than school learning because you get to sleep in. Everyone knows that sleeping is extremely important because it helps you grow and it is stressful to get to school on time.
Secondly, I have experienced that it is much more fun. You get to wear mufti every day and you even get to bring home your own computer, if mum and dad let you. You can play on your computer after school; it’s so much fun, you must try it.
Lastly, I know that if you do learning at home it will save mum and dad money because they don’t have to drive you to school. It is also more sustainable because if you are not driving to school you won’t use as much petrol and make pollution, which makes it better for the environment and your ecological footprint.
So that is why I strongly believe that online learning is better than school learning.
SCHOOL LEARNING IS BETTER THAN ONLINE LEARNING –JAYMIN TURNER
I strongly believe that it is extremely important that children have face to face learning through school learning instead of home learning. Here are my very true reasons.
Firstly, I am certain that it is easier to learn with an amazing well trained teacher being around. You can ask your teacher questions and get a great answer. For instance, if I needed help with maths, I can ask the teacher and keep going with work.
Next, I know that kids could get distracted at home. You might see something and focus on that when you are supposed to be listening. I know this because when I was in online learning I was distracted by my fish and my window.
Lastly, I am certain that kids will miss their friends. At recess and lunch you might have nothing to do at all except eat, look at the clock and fidget, but at school you can play and talk with your friends.
In conclusion, I certainly know that school learning is so much better than home learning.
It was a dilemma! I have so many skills to show my students, how can I do it? I know ... the “flipped classroom”. With the aid of my very creative and talented children, “Mrs Lumby Cooks" was born. This enabled my students to keep cooking at home and make the recipes we should have been doing at school. So now there is an ongoing resource for the future. I hope the families appreciated their efforts and talents and that it took the pressure off mum and dad at mealtimes.
Mrs Virginia LumbyIt will be fun, they said! It will be innovative, they said! It will be easy … said no one ever!! Drama online! What a stretching experience. The students were ever keen – poor Year 8 weren’t expecting so many files to fill in, but it did involve photographs, movies, vocal recordings and a lot of silliness. Some parents witnessed their child rushing around the house looking for a kooky hat, a set of dumb bells, and even a dad who was prepared to dress up with them. Year 9 were good sports – they played charades online. The delay made winning difficult, but loads of House points were collected. Year 10 had to perform remotely for their monologues – such a wealth of talent and perhaps having no audience, but the camera allayed many fears. The Year 12 classes were most interesting – at one stage we had mums and kids online joining in the laughter and greeting one another. What I learnt was that students and educators are far more inventive and adaptable than I ever gave them (or myself) credit.
Mrs Kerrie RochfordThe impact of COVID-19 provided an immense challenge as to how to deliver appropriate lessons to the students and provide for their pastoral care needs at the same time.
I had only just learnt the names of the students, so it was a challenge to recognise them online, especially as many joined “Teams” without the camera and appeared as an “Avatar” image. My seating plan was of no use!
This time was an opportunity to reflect on my teaching skills, readdress my pedagogy and to “flip” the classroom. For example, I was able to stream pre-recorded videos of the main content and let the students have access to it. This allowed me to spend more time with individuals and address specific needs. Students were able to watch the video again (and again). The students have been able to use these resources to assist them with their revision for future tasks.
I was impressed with how students completed their work online using OneNote. I was able to mark their work and monitor their progress. I was even able to share the students’ work with the parents during the online Teacher / Parent interviews.
The biggest overall challenge, as Year 12 Advisor, was keeping in contact with the cohort and explaining the changes to the HSC requirements, especially as they were constantly changing.
I loved being able to turn off my camera and have a cheeky cup of coffee whilst teaching, especially as this was a more challenging way of teaching, but thoroughly fulfilling.
Mr Paul ChambersThe one problem with COVID-19 poems is the words are forced to try to practise social distancing Caleb Ricardo (Year 8)
COVID-19 POEMPart of being in community is working together to face periods of adversity and change. This year has definitely been full of challenges, particularly with the overwhelming effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been wonderful to see both students and staff face this challenge with creativity and positivity, to enable our learning in Secondary School to continue smoothly, whether online or in a classroom. It is definitely through struggles that often our greatest times of growth occur, particularly spiritually as we realise that it truly is only through God that we can endure.
I wish to thank our wonderful group of Year Advisors who have been key leaders within our community for our students. It is often through the different Year groups that the characters of our students are molded and shaped to reflect the Graduate Profile. The Year Advisors have encouraged, comforted, disciplined, and loved their students with the grace that God gives to them. Thank you to Mrs Kerrie Rochford (Year 7), Mr Chris Haines (Year 8), Mr James Wright (Year 9), Mr Matthew Newell (Year 10), and Mr Chris Lewis (Year 11).
This year our Year 12 Year Advisors have had to deal with the stress of the HSC and all the uncertainty that COVID-19 added to this year for our senior students. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Mr Paul Chambers and Mr Daniel Witanowski, for their dedication and love for this year’s Year 12. Thank you for all you have done over the past five years for this cohort of students and also in your support of me.
My thanks go to the Prefects for 2019 – 2020 who have led the student body in such a way that reflected the love Christ has for each of us. Thanks go to Cody Battle (Captain), Felicity Bath (Captain), Nicholas Kaalim (Vice Captain), Breanna Reynolds (Vice Captain), Haven Barr, Elijah Cashin, Jessica Gilshenen, Jemilla Harvey,
Luke Moody, Evan Mereau, Isabella Munro, Evie Nagle, Zachary Smith, Jenaya von Heupt, and Alisha Woodruff. You have each contributed to the further development of a Christian culture at this College and have modelled a high standard for others to follow during a very difficult year affected by COVID-19. Thank you for loving our Lord and caring for the College. Stay strong and courageous for our Lord in the future.
Thank you also to our wonderful staff and Faculty Coordinators. Your dedication to our Secondary students and their welfare and education reflects Christ’s love. Your commitment and hard work are much appreciated.
Finally, to Year 12 - Your last year of school has not been what we were expecting, but you have continued the good fight and completed your HSC. Congratulations and may our Lord protect and keep you as you head out on your future pathways. Always remember to look up from yourself and be willing to make the hard choices in life that makes the life of someone else better, even if it costs you some comfort. May you truly reflect our Graduate Profile and find your strength in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is hard to believe that five years have passed since I became the Year Advisor for this wonderful group of students. It has been a privilege and honour to guide them during their educational journey and watch them change from children to fine young adults. I have been continually impressed at the array of academic and sporting skills demonstrated. As a cohort, we have shared many great experiences together. For example, the Year 9 Camp at Galston and the Year 10 Camp in Sydney encouraged the students to be collaborative through building community and fostering co-operation. My prayer is that the students will reflect on their time fondly at the College and feel that they are equipped for life (educationally and spiritually) and become life-long learners. A massive thank you to all the Devotions Teachers (especially Mr Witanowski as Deputy Year Advisor), who have supported the students spiritually, emotionally, socially and academically.
COVID-19 made Year 12 an extremely challenging year and was full of uncertainties and constant changes. I thank the students for their resilience during this challenging time and I congratulate them on their graduation and wish them all the best with future studies, careers and beyond.
Mr Paul Chambers YEAR 12 ADVISORI am sure that many of you will read reports about the challenges with schooling this year. I have seen this as an opportunity for teachers and students to adapt to the way that we learn, improving educational practice. I have been impressed and inspired in the way that the Mathematics Faculty have improved their teaching of Mathematics and connected in a fruitful way so that students can thrive. The teaching of Mathematics is evolving and prospering as a result.
Congratulations to the scholars of Green Point Christian College, many of whom constantly apply themselves at a high level to the demands of their academic Mathematics courses. A strong year with above average results in the HSC bears testament to the quality of the teaching and student participation. It is immensely encouraging to see that success at Green Point Christian College is possible at the highest of levels in Mathematics.
I am so thankful and share my respect towards the students for the optimistic attitude to their education. For the students who have made a resolution to put in extra time in study or homework and to continue to try their best, I admire your tenacity towards attempting the academic nature that is Mathematics. You will be enhanced in your character and resilience for taking on the challenge that studying Mathematics offers.
From the students taught at the highest Extension 2 HSC Mathematics Course to the newest in Year 7, I am appreciative for the passionate teaching and expert standards demonstrated by our skilled team of Mathematics educators; Mr James Wright, Mrs Carla Turner, Mr Chris Harris, Mr Matthew Newell, Mrs Keegan Raeside and Mr Paul Chambers.
Mr Troy KastelanTeaching English always provides opportunities to lead students in the ways that they understand and engage with their own ideas, their peers and their community. This year, it has been our privilege to teach units of work that have enabled us to explore our identity, identify ways in which we overcome adversity, learn about the narratives that shape our world, define what it means to be a hero and understand the nature of power in society. These units and more have been particularly relevant to the current issues we face as individuals, families, communities and human beings. We have loved teaching students to make valuable connections between their study of English and the real world.
In what has been a challenging year for us all, I am so grateful for our wonderful English teachers. Their creativity, innovation, good humour, collegiality and perseverance has been invaluable as we have navigated significant change and uncertainty in teaching our students. It is a privilege and honour to work with them and to witness their passion, deep concern and love for their role as teachers, mentors and advisors.
Ultimately, we are grateful that “in the beginning was the Word”, the One who is the Light that “shines in the darkness”. (John 1:1, 5)
Mrs Jillian McKayAs Louis Pasteur once wrote, "A bit of Science distances one from God, but much Science nears one to Him”. In a year of huge change our priority in Science is still to explore the world God has given us.
We feel blessed to have Mr Yule with us this year. As a GPCC graduate, Mr Yule brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and love for God and the College. Although 2020 will not be remembered for all the excursions and field trips we went on, we are grateful for our initiatives with Blended Learning by introducing STILE and Teams. We hope students embrace the technology as they prepare for their future in a Blended world.
Lastly, a proud recognition to our Year 12 students who have been resilient and excelled despite adversary. Thank you.
Mr Stuart Drennan
This year we have been reminded of the value of the arts, not only, as Joni Mitchell sings, “you don’t know what you've got ‘til it’s gone”, but because the arts are what helped us make sense of it. We knew what we had - we just never thought we would lose it. Art has always amplified common experiences and this year is certainly no different. The arts helped process shared experiences as we expressed them through the creative channels of Visual Arts, Drama, Photography and Music. Even though it might seem impossible to teach practical subjects online, the opposite proved true. The CAPA Department embraced online learning not only for its challenge, but more importantly for the unique possibilities it presented. The creative brain’s tendency to think outside the square has a distinct advantage in these so-called unprecedented times, and no doubt will continue to do so in the months ahead.
With the cancellation of many creative opportunities, a big one being this year’s Secondary School musical “Beauty and the Beast”, the students were flexible, resilient and remained positive, even amid significant disappointment. These are valuable character attributes not just for these times, but will serve them well when it is all over.
Mrs Angela ScottStudents learning Japanese or French at GPCC this year have had a rich and enjoyable experience despite the year’s many setbacks. Preparations for Shizuoka Kita High School’s annual visit in March were well underway with thirty GPCC families excited about hosting, exchanging cultures, and making new friends, but unfortunately the experience was unable to take place. Our alliance however, remains strong and we hope to conduct reciprocal exchanges again from 2021 onwards.
Online education brought its challenges for language learning, but many positives also shone through and will remain part of our pedagogical landscape. For Stage 6 French and Japanese students, Microsoft Teams provided an excellent platform for oral communication practice via distance. Stages 4 and 5 students enjoyed learning Japanese at their own pace using College created videos on Microsoft Streams to develop sound listening, reading and writing skills.
Despite the closure of physical international borders in 2020, the pandemic experience has brought the world closer together and our ties with Japan and French-speaking countries continue to flourish.
Mr Charles Wheeler2020 has been a great year in Biblical Studies and Studies of Religion. God has blessed us with many students who have adapted very well to the tricky time of learning from home. Fortunately, we were able to provide students with a similar program to normal lessons, despite it being a challenge getting students access to class materials. One thing that has been apparent throughout online learning is just how much students miss the classroom environment and the school community when it is inaccessible. This is especially true of Biblical Studies classes as we ordinarily discuss the deeper things of life together as smaller learning communities. Nevertheless, students have strongly engaged with the course content, as they were challenged to consider the extraordinary message of the Bible, its relevance today and the role genuine spirituality plays in our lives.
Year 7 have been introduced to the God of the Scriptures, how He has spoken to humanity through the person of the Lord Jesus and the impact for good Jesus has had on the lives of many important historical figures. Year 8 began the year with an objective investigation into the resurrection of Jesus and the reliability of the Bible. This was followed by an in-depth look at Christian organisations making a difference in the world and a unit of work about how we treat other people in our community. Year 9 have examined their own views of God, Jesus and the Bible and thought deeply about how they have related to God. They have also engaged in a depth study of the Gospel account by John the Disciple. Year 10 have discussed big questions about standards for ethical behaviour, different worldviews from which decisions are made and tackled assessment tasks focussing on suffering and forgiveness.
Year 11 Studies of Religion students are well into their in-depth study of the world’s major religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) exploring sacred sites (synagogues, mosques, cathedrals and temples) in and around the Sydney region. While Year 12 have rounded off their phenomenological approach to religious education focussing on the practices, significant figures and ethics of the main three religions. Overall, God has been very gracious to us this year and I am confident that His Word will not return to Him empty.
Mr Greg Masters2020 has been a very interesting year in PDHPE. There have been many highlights and plenty of challenges to overcome. I have been impressed by the resilience of our students and staff. As always, we have aimed to develop useful and practical programs that help to equip our students for life. We have covered a range of topics from physical fitness to resilience, to building healthy and positive relationships. There has yet again been a focus on our students gaining and maintaining healthy levels of personal fitness. All students are required to complete a range of fitness activities at the start of every Physical Education lesson. I am confident that the skills and resilience that our students have developed will help them in the future. A special thanks to the PDHPE teachers: Mrs Kirk, Mr Wellington, Mr Lewis, Mrs Nihill and Mrs Stewart for their dedication and commitment.
Mr Andrew McGillivrayThroughout 2020, the Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) Faculty have continued their project of teaching students about the world through a biblical perspective. Our Geographers have sought to bring the outside world into the classroom and into the houses of our students during lockdown. Our Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture teachers have risen to the challenge of an isolated world by encouraging a spirit and context of hospitality in all they have done. Our historians have brought the distant past into the present, revealing great capacity for both good and evil across the generations. In 2020, HSIE at Green Point Christian College has been a diverse Faculty, united by a desire to love and care for their students. I am thankful for all they have done in the service of God. I am also thankful to the parents who entrust their children to our care. It is an honour to partner with them.
Mr Michael Street130,000 tonnes of plastic finds its way into waterways and into the ocean every year (WWF Australia, 2019). Year 10Y Geography studied Environment Change and Management, and in May they conducted a litter audit of the boundary between the oval fence and Egan’s Creek to investigate the nature of plastic pollution at school. Students were surprised at the number of items and how many were plastic. There was some interest in who may be most responsible, but due to run-off and wind conditions, it was concluded that it is a school-wide responsibility. There is further scope for audits in different areas focusing on microplastics and other single use plastic. Well done to these students.
Mrs Amber ErasmusIt is with great pride that I reflect on the way the Technologies’ teachers adapted and thrived during the online learning period this year, creating videos, new content and even completely new units of work.
Aside from the online learning time, Technologies staff and students busily worked to complete projects and practical work that required access to the specialised equipment found at school.
Despite the challenges, we saw some amazing projects, incredible dishes, innovative creations, ambitious endeavours and intricate designs from our students across the full range of subjects within the Faculty.
My thanks and appreciation go to the dedicated teachers within the Technologies Faculty for all their hard work and willingness to constantly go above and beyond for their students – particularly in this challenging year.

KYNE BAIRD - YEAR 6 (1)
Kyne had a splendid year in 2019, competing at CIS Athletics in both High Jump and Discus (he missed out by a place in qualifying for NSW All Schools). His passion is BMX racing and representing Australia; he competed at the BMX World Titles in Belgium (where he finished an outstanding 12th out of 160 competitors) as well as the BMX Trans Tasman, where Australia won. His ultimate goal is to represent his country at the Olympics.
WADE BARR - YEAR 9 (2)
Wade found success in endurance events including Athletics, Cross Country and Triathlon, making it through to CIS in both long-distance Athletics events and Cross Country. After coming first at the CSSA Individual Triathlon in 2019, he went on to place a phenomenal 5th at NSW All Schools in 2020, making the NSW team to compete at Nationals in Queensland. Even though this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it led to him being selected into the CCAS Triathlon Squad and he plans to train hard to qualify for Nationals again in the future.
In 2019, Gabe Beckett represented NSW and placed 3rd for his division at the Judo National Championships held on the Gold Coast. His selection in the NSW team followed his performance in qualifying events, with a Bronze medal at the Sydney International event and a Silver medal in the NSW State Titles. In addition to their usual club training, the NSW team participates in a six week intensive training program in Homebush to prepare for the National Championships. Although the National Championships were cancelled in 2020, Gabe has continued to train hard with aspirations to represent NSW and compete in national and international tournaments once they resume. He has also commenced training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is really enjoying this as another grappling sport. Gabe hopes to continue learning and perfecting his techniques across both sports.
JESSIE BLACKWELL - YEAR 8 (4)
Jessie represented GPCC at the CIS Swimming Carnival in 50m and 100m Freestyle and the relay team. She placed 3rd in CSSA Individual Triathlon and also came 8th in the Teams event at NSWCIS Triathlon. In Athletics, Jessie broke the school records in all running events and won the 800m at CIS and silver in the 400m. She is the U12 NSW All Schools Champion for 800m and bronze in the 400m. Both times were qualifiers for Athletics Australia Nationals (which is her greatest achievement of the year). This event was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID. Outside of school athletics, Jessie is the NSW Country Champion for 800m and 400m and received bronze in the 200m. Jessie is focused on making National qualifying times again in the 400m. Her long term goal is to make a National team and represent Australia in the future.
Olivia had a very strong year in 2019, winning the CSSA State Biathlon, competing and making it into the top 15 for NSW SLS Championships in the Swim/Ironwoman Final and winning the Central Coast Branch Surf Swim title for the 2019/20 season. Her goals are to be a professional Ironwoman and swimmer, and to keep training her hardest.
Nicholas, who has been playing soccer for many years, was selected as the Goalkeeper for the NSWCSSA team in 2019. They made it to the Grand Final at the National Christian School Games and won Gold. After playing with the North Shore Mariners and an experience playing at a soccer academy in Germany this year, Nicholas was recently accepted into the Sydney FC Senior Academy, where he trains and is playing with the National Youth League Squad. He is continuing to work hard towards achieving his goal, which is to play at the highest level.
Crosby loves the challenge and energy of competitive sport. In 2019 he swam at Zone and CSSA, competed at Zone Athletics, CSSA Cross Country and CSSA Biathlon, where he placed 4th in Individual. Crosby's passion in sport is Judo. Last year he won the National Schools Championship as well as received fourteen 1st places and two 2nd places (across both 2019/20), including NSW State Champion. His experience of training for three weeks in Japan has added to his main sporting goal, which is to represent Australia in Judo.
RAJ SHARMA - YEAR 7 (8)
Raj has played cricket since he was five years old and his dream is to play at the highest level. He was selected in 2019 to play for the NSWCIS Cricket Team, who was undefeated for the tournament and won the Grand Final. Raj was then selected for the NSW Team, where they played in Adelaide in the National Championships. The team came third, with Raj bowling beautifully for the tournament. He has made the Northern Districts squad and aspires to play for his country one day.
Lachlan enjoys all sports, but tennis and cricket are his favourites. Lachlan represented the school at both sports, highlighted by winning the CSSA Open Boys Tennis Gala Day by overcoming his sister in a tight match and then winning the Gold Medal at the National Christian School Games in the mixed doubles by teaming up with Shannon. Lachlan was also selected to play Second Grade Senior Cricket, winning the Brisbane Waters Cricket Club Junior of the Year Award for the 2019/20 season and also playing in the Under 21’s side. Lachlan aims to keep playing cricket at senior level, but also keep his hand into tennis and golf.
MILLIE TARDITI - YEAR 9 (12)
In 2019 Millie was selected to be part of the Australian U13 Futsal team in Barcelona. She has represented Newcastle at State level, School Nationals and Nationals and has been selected for three more international tours and looks forward to her tour in the UK. Millie also plays football, and she aims to be a member of the WPL next season, whilst playing Futsal internationally.
Sophie was selected in the NSWCIS team for the NSW All Schools Cricket Championships this year. She was also selected in the Northern Districts team for the NSW State Challenge Squad. This was a selection trial to make the NSW Metro and ACT/NSW Country teams for the National Under 19 Championships. Unfortunately, this was cancelled but hopefully she can continue her amazing form in the Sydney grade competition over the coming season to qualify for the Nationals Team.
SHANNON SPENCER - YEAR 12 (10)
Shannon has represented the school in Tennis and competed at State and National Level as well as winning several outside tournaments run by Tennis Australia. In 2019 she was the Singles and Mixed Doubles winner at the National Christian School Games, selected for the NSWCIS Team and represented NSW in the Pizzey Cup, won the U16 Girls Singles and Doubles at the Rod Laver Junior Championships, winner of the U18 and Open Mixed at the NSW Country Championships and made it to the Australian National Junior Championships in Melbourne. Shannon is looking forward to pursuing academic studies and her tennis career after school.
Lachlan Spencer, Brooke Hewitt, Eden Matterson (ex-student), Shannon Spencer and Nicholas Kratochvil represented CSSA at the National Christian School Games in Queensland in 2019.
The camp was rich in Christian belief and that is something I have never had before because I was at a public school. The best bit about camp for me was the groups where you get to chat and ask questions about the Bible. Gabriel Irazabal
Year 7 camp was a great experience that I don’t think I will forget. It was full of fun, skipping, basketball and great sessions of Christian discovery. The water slide was great fun, especially when you accidentally hose your partner halfway down the slide. There was a great high ropes course that improved our teamwork skills and challenged us. Paddle boarding was an amazing experience especially when we hung around on the sand bank. Climbing was also a great teamwork building activity. Overall, Year 7 camp was amazing. Millie Pettiford
Camp was really fun, it helped me to get to know more people and secure lots of friendships. My friends and I all thought the waterslide was the most fun activity there. I’m glad I got to know people better as I am pretty new to the school, even though I was on the netball team last year. I can’t wait to see next year’s Year 7 go to camp and enjoy it as much as I did. Rachel Smith
Highlights of the Year 7 camp were: all the activities we participated in, the leaders who were amazing, the food, and the movie. Sophee Uzelac
Wade Barr, Oliver Carblis, James Drennan, Luke Falconi, Hamish Hall, Oscar Masters, Connor Widdowson, Mr Andrew McGillivray, Mr Richard Hall and Jack Thompson (ex student).
This year I had the amazing experience of being able to participate in the best school trip I have ever been on, and visit the outback communities of Brewarrina and Gulargambone. In Brewarrina we spent lots of quality time interacting with the Christian community of the town by attending church and youth services led by Pastor Isaac and his son Doug. We played multiple sports games with them, sharing food, sharing testimonies, talking around the campfire and discussing faith at gatherings. The people who live there are quite inspiring, even though their living situations are far from perfect, they love everything they have and love everyone around them. This inspired me to make Jesus my own Saviour and personally become a Christian.
After we left Brewarrina we travelled to Gulargambone where we stayed for three nights. Here we spent a lot of time getting to understand each member of our team, having good chats and playing fun games around the campsite like cricket and mafia. We were also able to do fun activities like visiting Hickeys Falls and the Pilliga Bore Baths with Pastor Henry and his wife, who are truly inspirational people.
This trip was one of the best weeks of my life and I encourage anyone who is considering going in the future to give it a shot for sure, because I can guarantee that you won’t regret it.
Wade BarrBefore I went on this mission trip, I had high expectations; I had teachers, past students and parents tell me how amazing this trip would be. Even on the bus trip on the first day I began to see what they were talking about; the seven of us became much closer as new friendships were formed and old ones were strengthened.
The next day we went to Youth and I was astounded at the small size of the church and the difficulties that many of the children in the community experienced. It was that night that I shared my testimony with the youth there. Even though I had written this down, saying it out loud to this community was a completely unique and impacting experience for me. The next day we went to church and did a skit on the prodigal son. After this James and Jack (past Year 9 mission trip student who came back) did a sermon; but we were all captured by Doug’s sermon at the end.
The next day we went up to the tops of the mountains and saw massive forests all laid around us which gave me a feeling of insignificance in the face of such massive and amazing creation. We then went to Doug’s house to have dinner and while the community shared their lives with us, I think we were all impacted by the power of their love for each other and how welcoming they were to us, even through the terrible circumstances they had to go through.
The next day we went off to Gulargambone and met the lovely park owner, but what was really remarkable was the falls we visited the day after with Pastor Henry. We all had a great time jumping from rock to rock at the bottom of the falls, but the top of the falls was the real discovery. Watching from the top of the falls I thought about the amazing power of God’s creation. That night we had a campfire and all shared experiences from our lives; this was one of the highlights of the trip.
The next day we went to the bore baths which were very relaxing and warm, much bigger than I had expected. We then went to Pastor Henry’s church and he shared with us parts of his story which was very inspiring, it made me realise many of the things I take for granted.
To end our final night, we played two and a half hours of mafia which passed very quickly. However, a few of us didn’t want the experience to end so we spent a few hours (while everyone was asleep), looking at the stars and marvelling at God’s amazing creation.
All in all, this mission trip blew my expectations away every day and was one of the best experiences of my life. The trip is something I extremely recommend to everyone who might be interested. Thank you so much Mr McGillivray and Mr Hall for providing us with this wonderful experience.
Oliver CarblisOur new 2020/2021 Prefects had a different sort of Leadership Training Camp this year. In August our students came all kitted out to go on a three day Leadership Training Camp at Toukley, but due to further COVID restrictions, we had to reschedule their training to be held at the College. Mrs Gavin, Mr Masters, Mr Lewis and Mrs Stewart led our Prefect Leadership Camp, designed to equip our students to lead the College community from a Christian perspective.
INTERVIEW WITH HAVEN BARR (YEAR 12) WHO HAS COMPLETED
HIS GOLD DUKE OF ED AWARD
Why did you decide to do the Duke of Ed?
Originally I did the Duke of Ed Bronze for the fun hikes with friends. I also heard that it was a well respected award which you could add to your resume. I decided to continue the award for a challenge. It was fun and hard, yet rewarding work, and definitely worth it.
What did you do for your Award?
Skill: Playing guitar, boat licence
Service: Youth leading for Years 5 and 6 Thrive program through GPBC
Sport: Swimming
Project: Nias (Indonesia) ministry and Compassion Insight trip
Could you share your favourite story of the Award?
The hikes were definitely my favourite part. It was amazing when we stopped at a waterfall and took group photos with a drone that one of my friends had brought along.
Were there any challenges you encountered along the way and how you overcame them?
There were definitely challenges on the hikes, especially the four day Gold hikes! It was tough to walk the lengths we did, but it was great to be with friends, or part of a team where we could motivate each other to keep going and then enjoy the accomplishments together.
I also found the requirement of consistent sport/skill/service hours of one hour a week challenging to fit into my schedule. However, it soon became natural as I kept up the routines and I really enjoyed each aspect.
Have you noticed any change in yourself since you started the Award?
I am now a lover of nature, and definitely have a stronger passion for accomplishing any goals I have. I’ve seen improvement in my guitar playing and swimming, and am continuing my service in youth leading which I have grown to love doing.
Do you think doing the Award has helped make you ready for university, travel, work? How will you use these skills you have picked up for your future?
I have learnt some skills along the way for how to use a map and compass. The residential project to Indonesia with Compassion gave me insight into another way of life, as I was able to experience and see into the Nias community and culture, and develop relationships there which I will never forget.
In relation to future plans, I am striving to use this accomplishment to help me get into university.
Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you in doing your DOE?
I am very thankful for my parents who have supported me every step of the way throughout the award, and also for Mr Witanowski who has been my award leader. I would also love to give a massive shout out to Joel Wynter for doing the Silver award with me.
“ALWAYS WAS. ALWAYS WILL BE”
At the conclusion of Term 2 all students in Primary School participated in a collaborative artwork recognising and honouring our First Nations Peoples who occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We also honoured and recognised God as Creator over all lands and all people, creatures of the sky and those under the sea based on Genesis 1 –Genesis 2:2. Students worked as Grades to complete part of the Creation narrative, each hand playing a part in creating something of beauty. Congratulations students on a spectacular work of collaboration.
NAIDOC is celebrated not only in indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. It is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Our students participated in a number of activities including each Primary class participating in NAIDOC lessons with Mrs van Wyk in the Library and designing and painting their own dot painting artwork. Our Year 10 Food Technology classes cooked 600 Wattle Seed pikelets for our Secondary students to enjoy in their Devotions Class to celebrate NAIDOC week.
Congratulations to Amelia McKay (5D) and Ellen Bowen (4M) who were awarded certificates in the WriteOn 2020 Competition. Amelia received a Gold certificate for her story entitled “Memories”. Ellen received a Silver certificate for her Poem entitled “The Messy Bedroom”.
The NESA annual WriteOn Competition is open to all NSW Primary students in Years 1 to 6. This competition provides students with the opportunity to become published authors. Students compose an imaginative text of up to 500 words, based off a stimulus image.
Only six of these awards are given out across NSW in each section, so to have two recipients in our midst is a great honour. For Amelia, this is the second consecutive year she has received a Gold award and will be published in the WriteOn 2020 anthology of work. We congratulate both girls on their outstanding achievements.
PROUDLY SUPPORTING:
Online Chapel at the College has looked very different due to the COVID restrictions, but our students continued to meet together in their Primary classes or Secondary Devotion groups to hear from God’s Word. Thanks so much to our staff for your hard work in making online Chapel happen each week.
In Primary School, the Year groups have still been able to present their items via video, and the worship on camera has been a joyous experience. Mrs Smith has presented the good news of Jesus alongside with the Biblical Studies program run during class time. Special thanks to Mr Kieren Turner, Mr Joshua Baker, Mrs Karen Munro, Year 6 Prefects and to Mr Jonathan Oppel for filming and editing the videos each week.
In Secondary School we give particular thanks to Mr Jonathan Oppel who has filmed and edited every Chapel video. It has been a rich time to read from the Bible and to hear what God has to say about who Jesus is and to consider how we must respond to both this claim and the actions of Jesus the Saviour. We have had a number of guest speakers including (at time of writing) Jemilla Harvey (Year 12), Evan Mereau (Year 12), Tally Pakofe (Year 11), Oscar Smith (Year 11), Mrs Jillian McKay, Mrs Zoe Anderson, Mrs Rebecca Gavin, Mr James Leonard, Mr Andrew Watt, Mr Christopher Harris, Mr Michael Street, Mr Marc Erbsleben, Mr Phillip Nash, Mr Phillip Heard, Mrs Lauren McMahon, Mr Matthew Cohen, David Spragg and Andre Gardiman. Each of these people have brought something of their personal experience of Jesus to the Chapel services and this has helped immensely in the preparation each week.
We pray that God might reveal Himself to us as we read the Bible and celebrate knowing Him.
In 2020 we held an Open Day in February but unfortunately our August Open Day was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Our Open Days showcase our College and our students, and is an opportunity for the wider public to come and talk to our students and staff, to see our excellent facilities, and to experience the wonderful community here at Green Point Christian College.

In early September, Nicola competed in the Brussels Diamond League Athletics meet taking out the event with a jump of 1.91m. Nicola is an outstanding ambassador for Christ and an international star athlete.
11. Daniel Webber (2006) returned to GPCC in early September to chat with some students (potential thespians) about getting into the acting industry. Daniel is known for his roles in “The Dirt” (Ince Neill), “Close” (Pvt Paul Large) and “11,22,63” (Lee Harvey Oswald). COVID has brought him back to Australia for the time being. The College is grateful that Daniel was able to share his vast experience with our up and coming actors.
