In Georgia hundreds of thousands of people are experiencing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, but aren’t diagnosed. Unfortunately, undiagnosed dementias can lead to unnecessary ER visits, massive expenses, excessive caregiver burden, and life-threatening medical complications.
Georgia Memory Net (GMN) is funded by the Georgia Department of Human Services, and authorized by the Georgia General Assembly and Governor of Georgia. GMN is built on a foundation of close partnerships between the state, dementia experts at Emory University, and interdisciplinary memory assessment center teams, who help Georgians get accelerated and accurate diagnosis. GMN now runs Memory Assessment Clinics around the state. It’s the model that many states are now hoping to emulate.

Dear Friends, December is a month of holidays. And while most of them are associated with gift giving and receiving, it’s also a good time to look back at all the gifts GPB has provided over the last year in the form of quality television, informative radio, innovative education and digital ventures and all-important community engagement. Thank you for making all that possible. Without the vital support you provide we wouldn’t be able to serve you and others across the state with these things and more!
This is also a time of reflection about what matters to us, and one of those things for me is GPB. You see, you have a very intimate relationship with GPB’s product –the entertaining and engaging programming that comes to you across a number of mediums enhancing the quality of your life. I have the wonderful blessing of seeing everything that goes into making that possible. The people who work at GPB are the most dedicated group I’ve ever known. They believe in the mission of this company, and regardless of what part they play, they’re invested in our shared success. A few months ago, I asked the company to engage in an exercise of sharing words they thought embodied GPB. I thought it was a great idea for a staff t-shirt… GPB is… but what I got instead was an absolute reminder of what we mean to the communities we serve as well as one another. Words like community, education, love, knowledge, truth, trust and so many more peppered my email for days. It was affirmation. We are doing the right thing. You know what else is affirming? You! And the time you spend with us. You’ll see as you look through the schedule that GPB TV has a lot of wonderful holiday programming coming up this month as part of our annual Season of Giving. In addition, you’ll see some new items from FRONTLINE to American Masters, and of course the exciting new Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas premiering Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m.
Read on to hear about GPB’s work in the community through education, engagement, high school football and more. We are here for you and because of you. Thank you so much for your investment and your trust. See you in 2023 for another year of quality.
Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman GPB PresidentPremiering Mon., Dec. 19, 9 PM
Learn how to prepare the perfect three-course Christmas dinner with Dame Mary Berry in this new special filled with her time-tested recipes as she and some special friends show how to plan, shop and prep for a delicious, stress-free day.
The author of over 70 books, including the bestselling Mary Berry Cooks, she was the much-loved judge on The Great British Baking Show and has been teaching the world to cook for over four decades.
“It goes without saying that Christmas is a very special time of year, but over the last couple of years it has become challenging for us all, whether it’s the emotional hardship of lost loved ones, the economic hardship of cooking for large families or a combination of both,” said Berry. “In this special, I am going to bring together everything you need with tips to make it a festive day to remember fondly.”
In this new special, Mary shares her ultimate Christmas feast using her definitive tried and tested recipes, including Lemon and Herb Roast Turkey and a show-stopping Festive Trifle with layers of custard, cream, sponge cakes and pear, topped with spun sugar.
Checking in with friends who share recipes reflecting their own heritage, Mary visits the home of Chef Angela Hartnett, where she cooks up rich Pumpkin Ricotta Tortelli, a seasonal tradition for her Italian family. Monica Galetti welcomes Mary to her London restaurant, where she prepares a twist on Samoan Palusami with Smoked Haddock, Cavolo Nero and Sourdough. And Mary and TV host Rylan Clark visit a “pick your own” vegetable farm where they cook up a yummy dish of Brussels Sprouts with Peas and Cashews.
GPB Education has launched a multi-faceted outreach and awareness initiative in five communities across the state that have been strategically chosen according to their location and socioeconomic data, including neighborhoods in Bibb County, Muscogee County, Fannin County, Jackson County and Atlanta.
As part of the campaign, GPB Education is working with community partners, including the Georgia Family Connection Partnership (GaFCP), to distribute 3,500 backpacks that contain learning activities, school supplies and information on how to access GPB Education and PBS Kids content (English and Spanish).
Additionally, GPB Education has created a new webpage at gpb.org/education/welcome, which helps serve as a guide to its website content. The target age will be Pre-K and Kindergarten students.
“We know all families want to support their child’s learning and development at home but may not necessarily have the tools and resources they need,” said GPB director of education Laura Evans, “With the help of our amazing network of community partners, this initiative allows us to put high-quality, research-based learning resources directly into the hands of families who need them most.”
In addition to the distribution of backpacks in the communities, GPB Education is conducting targeted canvassing in under-resourced neighborhoods to let parents/caregivers know about the resources and encourage them to explore materials appropriate to the grade level of their children.
Statewide, these efforts are being supported by GPB Education Outreach Specialists who help educators and families integrate digital learning into the education of the children in their care through informational sessions, professional development workshops and ongoing support for educators and schools as well as libraries, teaching museums, childcare centers and Head Start programs.
If you’re already thinking of a getaway for next year or want to start planning your next great adventure, tune in for Travel with Rick Steves, featuring episodes covering travel and culture across every continent.
Steves, the author of 30 travel guidebooks and longtime host of the Rick Steves’ Europe TV series, says he was attracted to radio because of the opportunity it provides to interact with listeners.
“Radio provides a virtual café for travelers to meet up, sharing tips, insights and discoveries,” says Steves. “On my radio show, rather than being the tour guide, as I am on TV, I get to host the coming together of experts on various cultures and travel themes with our callers and listeners.”
Look for a new character on the PBS KIDS programming lineup beginning December 26. Watt, a little lightbulb with big ideas, is the star of City Island, a new series of animated digital shorts for early elementary school-aged children that features a civics curriculum, highlighting topics like cooperation, conflict resolution and city planning to foster young viewers’ understanding of how cities and communities work.
City Island, a new PBS series of animated digital shorts for early elementary school-aged children.
Set in City Island, in each episode Watt meets all the cheerfully optimistic members of the community and learns about how they make the city run, exploring different locations like the library, airport, planetarium, art museum and more, all while working together to find the best solutions to simple problems and show that great ideas are one of our most precious resources.
In addition to civics, the series also touches on a social studies curriculum, including geography and economics.
GPB also provides a wealth of learning resources for Pre-K – 12 students on these topics as well, including the Georgia Studies digital collection, Let’s Learn Georgia, Lights, Camera, Budget! and Econ Express. Visit gpb.org/education for more.
GPB is a proud media partner of The Moth, helping to promote the art and craft of storytelling and honor and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience. This fall, The Moth launched their inaugural Pop Up Porch Tour, traveling to six cities to foster new connections and strengthen relationships with communities throughout the American South. The tour culminated in Atlanta at Ponce City Market, where hundreds of visitors learned about The Moth, listened to stories from the archive and participated in one-on-one story coaching sessions.
We were pleased to sponsor an Introduction to Storytelling Workshop for Georgia Parent Support Network Youth MOVES while The Moth was in town as well, during which participants learned about the power of a story as an empathetic communication tool. The stories continue with The Moth GrandSLAM Championship in Atlanta this month. Join GPB and The Moth for a night of fine storytelling at Center Stage on December 5. Visit gpb.org/community for more information.

One of GPB’s most-beloved holiday programs is returning for the twelfth year, and it is sure to be a delight for viewers once again. Described as “enchanting,” “resplendent” and “magical,” A Southern Celtic Christmas celebrates in music, dance, poetry, song and story the high spirits and mystical beauty of the Christmas traditions of the Celtic lands and their connections with similar traditions of the American South.
Produced in Ireland, in the mountains of Appalachia and on the stage of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University, highlights of the program include performances by Grammy Award winners “First Lady of Celtic Song” Moya Brennan, bluegrass and Celtic banjo virtuoso Alison Brown and Riverdance composer Bill Whelan.
Beloved Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney is featured in a rare interview filmed in Glendalough, the beautiful ruins of the 6th century monastic settlement that provides the setting for his poem, “St. Kevin and the Blackbird.” Noted Yeats scholar and director, Irish tenor and storyteller James Flannery, provides a performance of the poem that is one of the highlights of the program.

A mother tracks down the first person ever diagnosed with autism, now an elderly man living in rural Mississippi, to learn if his life story holds promise for her own autistic son. Her journey exposes a startling record of cruelty and kindness alike but leads to hope that more communities are learning to support people on the spectrum.

Dr. James Lah is the Director of Emory’s Cognitive Neurology Program, and is the Co-Director of Georgia Memory Net. As a renowned expert in the fields of neurology and dementia, we asked him about the state of Alzheimer’s disease in Georgia.
We know Alzheimer’s disease can lead to memory loss. What are other possible effects of the disease?
People may show the symptoms of Alzheimer’s in a unique way. While most experience memory difficulty, some have trouble with communication, organization, or processing visual information. Some have trouble recognizing their own limitations. Some patients may have sleep disturbances, irritability, paranoia, delusions, and even aggressive or violent behaviors.
What’s on the horizon for the treatment of Alzheimer’s?
The first wave of “disease-modifying therapies” are on the horizon. These treatments will heighten the urgency of early diagnosis, as many are expected to be ineffective beyond the earliest stages of disease.
If I think I or a loved one might have Alzheimer’s, what should I do?
Discuss your concern with your primary care provider. For those on Medicare, the free Annual Wellness Visit includes routine screening for memory loss and cognitive decline.
Georgia Memory Net (GMN) is a statewide program that makes diagnostic evaluation accessible to all Georgians, and supports families living with Alzheimer’s and related disorders. GMN can work with your primary care physician to provide diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and support services.
