The Holidays Are the Perfect Time to Check In on Older Relatives

The holidays give many Georgians the opportunity to spend time with older relatives. It’s also a time when we may notice new symptoms from our older loved ones, which might include memory loss or cognitive decline.

If you notice these signs in someone you care about, it’s time to talk about getting a diagnosis for Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Georgia Memory Net provides accurate and accelerated diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias at Memory Assessment Clinics around our state, and via telemedicine.

Don’t wait. Schedule a conversation with a Primary Care Provider to ask if a referral to GMN is the right next step. Visit GaMemoryNet.org/referral to learn more.

A Word from President & CEO

Dear Friends,

What a year it has been for GPB! It’s hard to believe we’re coming up on the one-year anniversary of the launch of our new brand and release of our five-year strategic plan, as well as the commemoration of our 65th year of service to the state of Georgia this past May. It goes without saying, of course, that this year hasn’t been without challenges. Public media stations across the country continue to navigate budget cuts brought on by the defunding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

While we still have a way to go, I must say that the rescission was a catalyst reminding Georgians just how much GPB means to them, and the engagement and conversations we’ve had since July have been nothing short of astounding. In the face of everything, GPB is immensely grateful to YOU, our loyal donors. As we begin our annual Season of Giving this month, please know that everything GPB offers across our platforms is a gift to you this year as it has been each of the last sixty-five years.

From the 30-plus hours of live coverage of the Georgia High School Association Football Championships to local holiday programs, a new documentary on celebrated southern writer and Columbus native Carson McCullers and a nostalgic look back at the impact of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, GPB’s focus remains on carrying our donors’ generosity forward in a way that best serves Georgians.

As always, I’m hopeful that you and your loved ones will enjoy a peaceful and joyous holiday season. We look forward to spending 2026 with you and thank you again for all your support throughout this year.

Warmly,

Our most sincere thanks and gratitude to all of the people who have supported GPB with a monetary donation over the past year. This has been a challenging time for public media, and we are inspired and energized by the overwhelming support that you have shown. GPB is stronger for you and stronger because of you.

Unwrap Our Gift to You During Season of Giving:

Miss Scarlet Season 6 Streams Exclusively For GPB

Donors Beginning December 7

With the holiday season underway, now is the perfect time to reflect upon the past year and give our thanks. GPB, like stations across the country, faced new challenges with the closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 2025. As donors like you are our most reliable source of revenue, we want to thank you during this Season of Giving for your ongoing support of Georgia Public Broadcasting. From our education initiatives and high school sports to local news and podcasts, GPB belongs to you, and your decision to support GPB year after year allows us to continue to serve Georgians across the state.

As part of our way of saying thank you, we want to remind you about our exclusive donor benefit, GPB Passport. A streaming hub for all things GPB and PBS, the PBS App provides many hours of TV content, including local favorites like A Fork in the Road and View Finders, as well as beloved national productions like Finding Your Roots, Antiques Roadshow and dramas from MASTERPIECE. With GPB Passport, donors have access to even more: over six-thousand hours of programming.

And speaking of MASTERPIECE, we’re thrilled to present you with a special gift this season! As part of our Season of Giving, we present to you two new streaming opportunities, including a chance to reconnect with one of our favorite lady detectives: Eliza Scarlet. Beginning November 29, Season 1 of Miss Scarlet will be available to stream for free for thirty days on the PBS App. And exclusively for GPB donors, the upcoming Season 6 of Miss Scarlet will be available to stream in advance beginning December 7 with GPB Passport, allowing you to indulge in Eliza’s latest escapades a little over a month before the season premieres Sunday, January 11 on MASTERPIECE. It’s the perfect respite from a busy holiday season and a chance to relax, reconnect with your favorite characters and find out what life has in store for Eliza.

That happens to be quite a lot. For devoted Scarleteers (that’s the nickname for the Miss Scarlet fandom), you might remember that Season 5 ended with a marriage between Ivy and Mr. Potts, the departure of Patrick Nash and a new page turned in Eliza’s relationship with Detective Inspector of Scotland Yard, Alexander Blake. Season 6 opens with Eliza charting new territory: she’s still uncovering culprits for crimes across her area of London, but she’s keeping a rather important secret from her family, colleagues and friends. Eliza’s personal and professional lives are converging in ways she’s never encountered before, shaking her confidence and trust at times in both her detective skills and her emotions.

Thankfully, she’s not alone. While Eliza and Blake clashed early in Season 5, Season 6 opens with his support of Eliza’s detective skills. While his predecessor, William ‘The Duke’ Wellington, seemed to doubt her at every turn, Blake’s encouragement of Eliza’s business is a refreshing change. Clarence and Ivy, once they understand what’s troubling Eliza, are also there to support her while encountering troubles of their own as Clarence struggles with feeling inadequate as Eliza’s employee and Ivy contends with living under one roof with both Mr. Potts and Eliza. Some familiar faces at Scotland Yard depart the show this season as new characters arrive, and one familiar face returns, as seen in the initial preview: fan-favorite Moses Valentine returns to London for a handful of episodes, both seeking Eliza’s help and offering his own.

Catch up on Eliza’s first investigations for free on the PBS App beginning November 29 and stream Season 6 of Miss Scarlet before anyone else with GPB Passport beginning December 7. And if you can’t get enough mysteries this season, check out some of our other favorite female sleuths with GPB Passport in The Marlow Murder Club, Magpie Murders and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like Celebrates the Legacy of Fred Rogers and Brings Back the Magic of Childhood

Regarded as one of the most tumultuous and transformative years in American history, 1968 was marked by civil unrest that included Vietnam War protests and the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy.

But amid the uproar and bleakness of that year, a calming figure emerged that would change the face of television and show that the medium could be more than entertainment – it could be a force for good and a safe place to learn and grow for children. On February 19, 1968, Fred Rogers made his national debut in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, where he brought valuable life lessons to millions of children with original episodes for over 30 years until the show ended in 2001. Since that time, millions more have been impacted by the encore broadcasts.

As a young child in the early ‘70s, I tuned in daily for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in anticipation of an adventure in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe or a visit with Mr. McFeely the delivery man.

With the pop of the dial to Channel 8 (Georgia Educational Television - as GPB was formerly known) on my parents’ Zenith television, I was transported to Mister Rogers’ world.

From the moment he greeted his television audience at the beginning of each episode as he changed into one of his colorful sweaters until the time he said goodbye, I always felt welcome. Whether he was talking about something as simple as his fish or explaining feelings of loss, the direct connection I felt with him when he was speaking has stayed with me throughout my lifetime. He gave me and countless others the gift of feeling seen and heard with his reassurance, instilling a basic lesson in the kindness we should all show each other.

The tribute special Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like captures the magic I felt as child, as host, actor Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in the 1970s, celebrates the legacy of the program.

“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood inspired all of us to be better,” said Keaton. “Better parents. Better children. Better people. We all gained self-confidence and self-esteem just by watching him.”

“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood inspired all of us to be better. “
- Michael Keaton

Original cast members Joe Negri (“Handyman Negri”) and David Newell (“Mr. McFeely”), as well as Fred Rogers’ widow, Joanne Rogers, also appear in the special, along with guests including Judd Apatow, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Kratt, John Lithgow, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Sarah Silverman and Esperanza Spalding.

Children Enjoy Meeting PBS KIDS Favorite Daniel Tiger and More at Be My Neighbor Day

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood at GPB’s Be My Neighbor Day event in late October. Hosted in partnership with Compassionate Atlanta’s CompassionCon festival in Decatur’s Legacy Park, the event offered opportunities for young attendees to meet Daniel Tiger and learn the values of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, including kindness, patience and handling emotions.

This year’s activities included painting kindness rocks, planting seeds to learn patience and participating in a movement course where children earned capes and Daniel Tiger ears!

GPB is deeply grateful to the representatives of Compassionate Atlanta, who’ve expressed that our participation in CompassionCon amplifies the work that they do in bringing compassion to life.

Additional partners included the Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta Community Foodbank, UGA Cooperative Extension, the Marcus Autism Center and Little Mindful Yogis.

of All Ages to Pursue Their Creative Dreams

n a new series from GPB and the Georgia Department of Education, Georgia goes behind-the-scenes with creatives across the state as they share their career journeys, their passion for the arts and how Georgia inspires their craft. While the series, released on both GPB’s website and YouTube, is targeted at students in grades 9 through 12, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the stories told: ranging from music to dance to stage and film, every artist featured has a unique

chosen career path wasn’t one they originally considered or thought possible. “I don’t think sound design was something I ever thought of [as] a career,” Brian Arnold shared. Originally a musician, he’s a sound designer in Atlanta’s video game industry who records and manipulates sound effects as well as composing music and coding audio.

Others were inspired by their childhoods, such as flamenco dancer Julie Galle Bagenstoss whose parents lived in Spain before she was born. “Tap dance had been my forte, and I decided I wanted to try something new,” Bagenstoss explained. “Flamenco seemed like an interesting dance form that had percussion in the footwork.”

GPB Presents Live Coverage of the GHSA Football Championships

Monday, December 15 – Wednesday, December 17

GPB will capture the excitement of the GHSA Football Championships with three days of live coverage Monday, December 15 – Wednesday, December 17, culminating our seasonal coverage of high school football.

Each year, it’s truly a team effort between GPB and GHSA to highlight the hard-fought success of athletes, coaches and schools across the state. Along with donor support, our underwriters play a vital role in GPB sharing these important stories and reaching into Georgia communities. This month, we’re saying a special thanks to all our sports underwriters and sharing insights from a few of them who told us what inspires them to support GPB High School Sports coverage.

“We’re proud to support Georgia Public Broadcasting because GPB shares our commitment to serving Georgia communities with integrity, trust and education. Just as GPB informs and empowers families through storytelling and journalism, BREDA works every day to protect the homes and businesses that make those stories possible. Supporting GPB aligns perfectly with our mission to make a positive, lasting impact across the state we call home.

“Georgia Public Broadcasting has been a tremendous partner and supporter of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s efforts to reduce distracted driving crashes and increase the use of seat belts in our state over the last ten years. Their talented, knowledgeable and helpful staff understand our mission and consistently produce content that helps save lives on our roads.”

- Allen Poole, Director, Governor’s Office of Highway Safety

“We love supporting high school football on GPB because we think, like farmers, our local schools are part of the foundation of our communities - especially in rural areas. Football on Fridays in any town across the state is what binds the community together and economically, farmers (particularly cotton farmers) tie the community together. We are proud to support GPB in celebration of what we see as the lifeblood of our communities - connection.”

- Taylor Sills, Executive Director, Georgia Cotton Commission “U-Save-It Pharmacy is proud to partner with Georgia Public Broadcasting in airing the Georgia Player Spotlight. Our goal in producing this segment was to showcase positive stories about student athletes throughout the state. When we were looking for a partner to help air the Georgia Player Spotlight, we felt that Football Fridays in Georgia on GPB was the perfect fit. The team at GPB is amazing to work with. We have been pleased with the positive recognition that we have received from our partnership.”

- Tommy Sharpe, CEO, U-Save-It Pharmacy

“Supporting student athletes in building skills in teamwork, leadership and representing their school and community well aligns with the seventh cooperative principle of ‘concern for community.’ Georgia’s EMCs are thrilled to play a part in allowing families to cheer on their students through world-class broadcasts on GPB!”

- Lindsay Bridges, SVP, Communications & Member Services, Georgia’s EMCs
