4 SHELTER SITUATION
Let’s take deep dive on the Outreach project we plan to implement once the new animal welfare center is build:
An Outreach Initiative for Community Impact
Our outreach initiative is designed to provide vital support and resources to low-income pet owners, helping them meet the needs of their pets while promoting animal welfare across the community. Recognizing that financial constraints can place a heavy burden on pet ownership, we offer services like pet food banks, veterinary care vouchers, and additional support programs. These resources alleviate financial stress, strengthen community bonds, and ultimately reduce the number of pets surrendered to shelters. Our mission is to empower low-income pet owners with the means to care for their pets, enhancing the welfare of both pets and owners and fostering a more compassionate community. The initiative’s benefits are multi-fold. Firstly, by providing pet owners with access to essentials such as food and veterinary care, we’re supporting the wellbeing of animals in households facing financial hardship. Our pet food banks and care vouchers ensure pets receive the food and healthcare they need, reducing the likelihood of poor health outcomes due to limited resources. Additionally, our program offers comprehensive community support, especially in underserved areas and neighborhoods with high stray animal populations. This fosters a sense of unity and collaboration, as communities come together to support one another in caring for their pets. A critical outcome of our work is the reduction in pet surrender rates: by addressing the financial challenges that might otherwise lead to surrender, we reduce the pressure on shelters and rescue organizations. Finally, by equipping pet owners with the resources they need, we contribute to improved animal welfare across the community, ensuring pets in low-income households can live healthier, happier lives.
THE SHELTER IN NUMBERS
• 180 dogs currently at the shelter
• 90 cats currently at the shelter
• More than 40 dogs rescued last month
• More than 58 emergency treatments at the vet
• 200 dogs and 250 cats fed, and taken care of, every single day!

Our program timeline follows a phased approach to expand reach, strengthen partnerships, and enhance the services we offer. In the first year, we focus on setting up the program’s infrastructure, building partnerships, and initiating services like pet food banks and veterinary care vouchers. Community outreach campaigns promote our offerings and outline eligibility criteria. In the second year, we expand the program’s reach through partnerships with additional organizations and enhance online resources to make support more accessible. Year two also includes support protocols to ensure ongoing guidance for participants and a comprehensive evaluation to identify improvement areas. In the third year, we diversify assistance programs to adapt to changing community needs. Targeted outreach aims to engage underserved populations, particularly in rural and marginalized areas, while partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and educational institutions help to expand the program’s impact. By year four, our focus shifts to scaling up operations to meet growing demand, improving the user experience on digital platforms, and developing advocacy initiatives to raise awareness of pet welfare and promote policy change. We’ll also assess program sustainability and explore diversified funding to secure long-term stability.
Finally, by the fifth year, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation to measure program outcomes against our goals and celebrate the milestones reached alongside our clients, partners, and supporters. We will also identify opportunities to expand, replicate, or adapt the program to other communities and regions. Looking forward, we aim to use feedback and lessons learned to develop a strategic plan for the next phase, ensuring that our outreach initiative continues to address evolving needs and foster a compassionate, resilient community.

Why do dogs bring you their toys?

helps them communicate and often leave their owners in a frenzy of “what just happened?”.
If your dog is constantly bringing you his toys, it’s their way of saying that they love you, trust you,, and ask for your affection. Other than these gestures, they might be trying to comfort you, maybe bring you a little gift or because it’s their way of letting you know that they are happy to see you.
1- They are greeting you
You may have been away at work all day or maybe attending to other commitments; your pooch has been waiting eagerly for you to get back. When you’re back, they simply cannot contain how happy they are to see you, so they come running at you with their favourite toy in their mouth to greet you.
2- Expressing their affection
Dogs are emotional creatures; they have certain gestures that help them demonstrate their feelings. In their eyes, you’re a part of their pack, meaning they see you as an alpha family member and look up to you. Therefore, they give you your most prized possession, which is their toy. This helps them strengthen their bond with you and develop a sense of trust.
Another possibility is that the dog notices you are upset and is trying to cheer you up. Dogs are empathetic creatures and tend to notice when their human is upset or struggling. Therefore, they bring you what makes them happy. They feel that the object that makes them so happy will have the same effect on you

3- They are asking for your attention. Our furry friends demand attention just as much as a human child would. They see you as their playmate and will bring you toys so that you can play with them. Tugging and playing fetch is their idea of a good time. If you have a dog leaving toys on your bed, play with them!
4- Symbol of trust
The dog may bring you their favourite toy as a gift-giving gesture because they trust you. Dogs are territorial, and sharing is not their best pursuit; however they can be taught how to share their toys. Even though they are not very keen about material things, they still consider toys their prized possessions and will share them with their human. They want you to know that they trust you and that they feel secure and comfortable in your presence.

Some dog trainers believe that, since dogs are usually members of a pack, they will consider their human to be the pack’s leader. This implies they see you as an alpha, so showing off their toys or bringing them to you is a gesture to please or show respect to the alpha of the family, which is you.
5- Imitating hunting behavior
Some specific breeds, such as German Shepard and Pit bull Terriers, have hunting tendencies. Therefore, it is only average for them to pretend their toy is a make-believe prey they hunted down. So what happens is that they bring you their make-believe prey and then playfully run to have you chase them, or they could be guarding it momentarily to see if you’re committed to playing with them.
6- Seeking comfort
Your dog is likely seeking comfort by surrounding himself with familiar objects and your presence.Your dog may frequently exhibit this behaviour if he’s experiencing stress or separation anxiety. If you’ve been consistently waking up to dog toys on your bed with your pup lying next to you, this might be the problem, and you should address it quickly.
7- Retrieval instincts
Certain dog breeds have strong retrieval instincts, so they love carrying objects around their mouth. The trait is common in hunting dogs bred to bring back the prize for their hunters. Bringing you toys could be a similar expression of their innate behaviour.
8- Training and Reinforcement characteristic
Training your dog to bring you objects is a common practice which they associate with rewards. If you have taught your dog to bring things to you whilst training them and rewarding the behaviour with treats and encouraging comments, they will likely repeat the behaviour for similar outcomes.Your dog has learned that this behaviour is rewarded. Thus, they continue to do it to receive those positive outcomes.

The Benefits of Socialization: WhyYour Dog Needs Friends
Dogs, much like humans, are social creatures that thrive on interaction and companionship. While many pet owners focus on providing physical care and training for their dogs, socialization is often overlooked. However, it is a crucial aspect of a dog's overall well-being. In this article, we'll explore the numerous benefitsofsocializationandwhyyourdogneedsfriends.
1.ImprovedBehavior
Socializing your dog from an early age can lead to better behavior. Dogs that are regularly exposed to different environments, people, and other animals are typically less anxious and aggressive. Socialization helps dogs learn how to interact appropriately, reducing the likelihood of unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking, biting, or being overly protective.
2.EnhancedMentalStimulation
Dogs are intelligent animals that need mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Social interactions provide dogs with new experiences and challenges, which keep their minds active. Meeting new dogs and people, exploring new places, and engaging in play can prevent boredom and the associated behavioral problems that come with it.
3.IncreasedConfidence
A well-socialized dog is often more confident. When dogs are regularly exposed to various situations, they learn to navigate the world with ease. This confidence reduces fear and anxiety, making them more adaptable to changes in their environment or routine. Confident dogs are less likely to exhibit fear-based aggression or anxiety-driven behaviors.

4.PhysicalExercise
Playdates with other dogs provide excellent opportunities for physical exercise. Running, chasing, and wrestling with other dogs helps maintain a healthy weight and keeps your dog physically fit. Regular exercise is vital for a dog’s cardiovascular health, muscle tone, and overall physical well-being.
5.BetterCommunicationSkills
Dogs communicate with each other through body language, vocalizations, and scent. By interacting with other dogs, your pet learns essential communication skills. Understanding these social cues can help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts with other dogs, leading to safer and more enjoyable interactions.
6.StrengthenedBondwithOwner
Socialization activities often involve the owner, which can strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Whether it’s taking your dog to a dog park, attending obedience classes, or going on group walks, these activities foster a deeper connection and mutual trust. Dogs that are well-socialized are often more responsive to their owners, making training and daily interactions smoother.
7.PreventingLonelinessandDepression
Dogs can experience loneliness and depression just like humans. Regular social interactions with other dogs can provide the companionship they crave. Having dog friends helps alleviate feelings of isolation, contributing to a happier and more content pet.
8.OpportunitiesforLearning
Socialization is a continuous learning process for dogs. Each new encounter teaches them something different, whether it’s about other dogs' play styles, boundaries, or hierarchies. This learning extends to their interactions with humans, making them more well-rounded and adaptable pets.
TipsforSocializingYourDog
• Start Early: Begin socializing your dog as a puppy. Early experiences are critical in shaping their behavior and social skills.
• Positive Reinforcement: Use treats and praise to reward your dog for positive interactions with other dogs and people.
• Controlled Environments: Introduce your dog to new situations gradually. Start in controlled environments where you can manage the interactions.
• Consistency: Regular socialization is key. Make it a part of your dog’s routine to interact with other dogs and people.
• Professional Help: If your dog shows signs of aggression or extreme fear, consider seeking help from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist.
Conclusion
Socialization is a fundamental aspect of your dog's overall health and happiness. By ensuring your dog has regular opportunities to interact with others, you contribute to their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Remember, a well-socialized dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog means a happy owner. So, take the time to help your dog make friends and enjoy the many benefits that come with a well-socialized pet.

Nefeli’s Story
Words of wisdom from a chubby and happy rescue…
Obedience Finnish Championship
Once a year it’s time to see who is the best German shepherd in obedience in Finland. This year, once again, it was held by a club I frequently go to, to show how obedience is done. I was invited once more as a mascot but this time also as a participant. My mom politely declined, due to me being in retirement. She told me I was allowed to do as I please and she would not ask me to do things so perfectly - which is needed in the competitions. I earn the sausage and cheese just by being my awesome self.
But few others from my pack and training group did participate and of course I was there to root for them. We started to prepare for the competition a month before it was go time.Training for championship level is never easy, but it should always be fun. That's the best part, I try to do my best, my mom tries to do her best and either we succeed or not, but during every trick and show we are having a blast.
Thats the real victory. But it’s not always easy to think like that. There were few newbies in our team this year and I could see how they got more and more nervous the closer we got to the trial day. People, just like dogs, react differently when under pressure. You might be nervous, agitated, excited, scared - whatever the feeling is, you never know how someone else will handle it.

All of them wanted to succeed and get to the podium and leave with a price. So we had a talk with them. If you yell and push your team members, be it a human or a dog, and then end up winning, what's the feeling? Will you leave the field feeling like you deserved to win? Like you did your absolute best? Do you feel like you won as a team, or you won as an individual? In team sports there is never one winner and in general, what winning really means?

Born: 2013
Time at shelter: 6 months
Adopted: 2013
Passion: Food
Goals in life: To spread happiness and love and to kiss as many noses as possible.
Nefeli is a full breed Greek Tail Wagger, and the most positive dog you could wish to meet. She has travelled to more than 10 countries doing tricks in dog shows and expos, spreading the sentiment: “Adopt, don’t shop”
.
I showed them some tricks that I did perfectly, and then some others that I no longer care to do technically correctly. The ones where I come up with my own things are the ones where I am happiest, because I know I make the audience laugh. It might be doing 3 tricks at the same time, or doing an extra jump just to show off. And people watching it love it every time,. My mom says it also shows how smart I am and if she was to tell me off about those things, I might lose the motivation and freedom to try and think for myself. I am not a machine, and neither is mom, we both make mistakes and we are both allowed to try things our own way, as long as we both have fun while doing it. And I think our newbies got it, its not about being perfect, it’s about getting the perfect experience for the handler and the dog as a team. Because the real price is the experience and strong bond that you make with your partner.
We
should value growth, having fun and making mistakes together more than anything else.
Fiete, you stole many hearts and left a big paw mark on all of them. We miss you so much.

OUR MISSION & 2023 GOALS

The long term goal of any animal shelter should be to close down. Our dream is to live in a world where all pets have responsible owners who neuter them so that one day, there will be no more strays.
We believe that the key lies in educating the current and the next generation of pet owners, and in neutering programs.
Until we reach that goal, our aim is to be financially secure enough to be able to help every sick, injured or abandoned animal that finds it’s way to our gate and to provide the best care possible to all animals at the shelter until we can find them the good homes that they all deserve.
OUR 2023 PLANS FOR THE SHELTER ARE:
Secure finances for the animals that are in our care, so that when the time comes to move, we can afford to keep helping as many as possible.
