4 SHELTER SITUATION

Let’s take deep dive on the Engagement project we plan to implement once the new animal welfare center is build:

An Engagement Initiative for Community Impact

Our engagement program is designed to actively involve the community in celebrating and understanding the multifaceted benefits of pet ownership, from companionship to positive societal contributions. We aim to foster positive attitudes towards pets, strengthen the human-animal bond, and integrate pets into various aspects of society through specialized services, expert-led trainings, and community events. By highlighting the benefits of pet ownership, such as mental health improvements, social connections, and practical skills for pet owners, our program seeks to promote responsible pet care and healthier communities. Through promotional shows, expert-led trainings, and accessible resources, we want to shift public perception to view pets as invaluable companions who enrich our lives and support our well-being.The program’s benefits extend beyond individual pet owners, promoting a broader appreciation of pets in society. By emphasizing the positive role of pets, we enhance public perception of pets as integral members of the community. We also highlight the physical and mental health benefits of pet ownership, encouraging healthier lifestyles and deepening the bonds between pets and their owners. Additionally, we showcase the diverse roles pets can play in society, such as being companions for the elderly or service animals for those with disabilities, to underscore the inclusivity and integration they bring to communities. Finally, our expert-led training sessions equip pet owners with essential skills, allowing them to better care for their animals and enhancing their overall satisfaction with pet ownership. The program features several key elements aimed at enriching the pet ownership experience. We provide specialized services and resources, including training programs and promotional events, to elevate the quality of care pet owners can offer.

THE SHELTER IN NUMBERS

• 180 dogs currently at the shelter

• 90 cats currently at the shelter

• More than 40 dogs rescued last month

• More than 58 emergency treatments at the vet

• 200 dogs and 250 cats fed, and taken care of, every single day!

Through these services, we aim to reduce issues like pet-related stress or behavioral concerns, which can improve the overall experience of pet ownership. Our promotional events highlight the societal contributions of pets, such as their positive impact on mental health and community safety, while showcasing the support they offer to people with disabilities. Expert-led training sessions cover topics like animal behavior and obedience, giving pet owners the knowledge and skills they need to strengthen their relationships with their pets. Lastly, our promotional shows demonstrate pets’ diverse abilities, from therapy work to companionship, illustrating the unique value pets bring to society. Our program will roll out in phases to allow for continuous improvement, broader reach, and stronger community connections. In the first year, we’ll conduct research to identify the specific needs and interests of pet owners, and we’ll build partnerships with local businesses and pet care experts to support our initiatives. Pilot programs, like community events and training workshops, will test feasibility and gather feedback for refinement. In the second year, we’ll expand the program to reach a broader audience by refining the services and adjusting outreach based on pilot feedback. Additional resources, such as expert-led workshops and online informational tools, will provide pet owners with accessible guidance and support.

By the third year, we aim to scale up operations, with a focus on high-impact activities to broaden our audience. Targeted marketing campaigns will raise awareness, and strengthened partnerships with businesses and organizations will help secure the program’s sustainability. In the fourth year, we’ll consolidate our achievements and explore ways to replicate or adapt the program in other communities. We’ll also invest in staff development to bolster the program’s long-term resilience. Finally, in the fifth year, we’ll celebrate milestones with our supporters and conduct a comprehensive review to shape the next phase of the program, ensuring its continuity and impact through secure funding and community partnerships. Through these efforts, our engagement program will help foster a culture of responsible pet ownership, strengthen community bonds, and promote a greater understanding of the invaluable role pets play in our lives.

Why do dogs bring you their toys?

helps them communicate and often leave their owners in a frenzy of “what just happened?”.

If your dog is constantly bringing you his toys, it’s their way of saying that they love you, trust you,, and ask for your affection. Other than these gestures, they might be trying to comfort you, maybe bring you a little gift or because it’s their way of letting you know that they are happy to see you.

1- They are greeting you

You may have been away at work all day or maybe attending to other commitments; your pooch has been waiting eagerly for you to get back. When you’re back, they simply cannot contain how happy they are to see you, so they come running at you with their favourite toy in their mouth to greet you.

2- Expressing their affection

Dogs are emotional creatures; they have certain gestures that help them demonstrate their feelings. In their eyes, you’re a part of their pack, meaning they see you as an alpha family member and look up to you. Therefore, they give you your most prized possession, which is their toy. This helps them strengthen their bond with you and develop a sense of trust.

Another possibility is that the dog notices you are upset and is trying to cheer you up. Dogs are empathetic creatures and tend to notice when their human is upset or struggling. Therefore, they bring you what makes them happy. They feel that the object that makes them so happy will have the same effect on you

3- They are asking for your attention. Our furry friends demand attention just as much as a human child would. They see you as their playmate and will bring you toys so that you can play with them. Tugging and playing fetch is their idea of a good time. If you have a dog leaving toys on your bed, play with them!

4- Symbol of trust

The dog may bring you their favourite toy as a gift-giving gesture because they trust you. Dogs are territorial, and sharing is not their best pursuit; however they can be taught how to share their toys. Even though they are not very keen about material things, they still consider toys their prized possessions and will share them with their human. They want you to know that they trust you and that they feel secure and comfortable in your presence.

Some dog trainers believe that, since dogs are usually members of a pack, they will consider their human to be the pack’s leader. This implies they see you as an alpha, so showing off their toys or bringing them to you is a gesture to please or show respect to the alpha of the family, which is you.

5- Imitating hunting behavior

Some specific breeds, such as German Shepard and Pit bull Terriers, have hunting tendencies. Therefore, it is only average for them to pretend their toy is a make-believe prey they hunted down. So what happens is that they bring you their make-believe prey and then playfully run to have you chase them, or they could be guarding it momentarily to see if you’re committed to playing with them.

6- Seeking comfort

Your dog is likely seeking comfort by surrounding himself with familiar objects and your presence.Your dog may frequently exhibit this behaviour if he’s experiencing stress or separation anxiety. If you’ve been consistently waking up to dog toys on your bed with your pup lying next to you, this might be the problem, and you should address it quickly.

7- Retrieval instincts

Certain dog breeds have strong retrieval instincts, so they love carrying objects around their mouth. The trait is common in hunting dogs bred to bring back the prize for their hunters. Bringing you toys could be a similar expression of their innate behaviour.

8- Training and Reinforcement characteristic

Training your dog to bring you objects is a common practice which they associate with rewards. If you have taught your dog to bring things to you whilst training them and rewarding the behaviour with treats and encouraging comments, they will likely repeat the behaviour for similar outcomes.Your dog has learned that this behaviour is rewarded. Thus, they continue to do it to receive those positive outcomes.

The Benefits of Socialization: WhyYour Dog Needs Friends

Dogs, much like humans, are social creatures that thrive on interaction and companionship. While many pet owners focus on providing physical care and training for their dogs, socialization is often overlooked. However, it is a crucial aspect of a dog's overall well-being. In this article, we'll explore the numerous benefitsofsocializationandwhyyourdogneedsfriends.

1.ImprovedBehavior

Socializing your dog from an early age can lead to better behavior. Dogs that are regularly exposed to different environments, people, and other animals are typically less anxious and aggressive. Socialization helps dogs learn how to interact appropriately, reducing the likelihood of unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking, biting, or being overly protective.

2.EnhancedMentalStimulation

Dogs are intelligent animals that need mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Social interactions provide dogs with new experiences and challenges, which keep their minds active. Meeting new dogs and people, exploring new places, and engaging in play can prevent boredom and the associated behavioral problems that come with it.

3.IncreasedConfidence

A well-socialized dog is often more confident. When dogs are regularly exposed to various situations, they learn to navigate the world with ease. This confidence reduces fear and anxiety, making them more adaptable to changes in their environment or routine. Confident dogs are less likely to exhibit fear-based aggression or anxiety-driven behaviors.

4.PhysicalExercise

Playdates with other dogs provide excellent opportunities for physical exercise. Running, chasing, and wrestling with other dogs helps maintain a healthy weight and keeps your dog physically fit. Regular exercise is vital for a dog’s cardiovascular health, muscle tone, and overall physical well-being.

5.BetterCommunicationSkills

Dogs communicate with each other through body language, vocalizations, and scent. By interacting with other dogs, your pet learns essential communication skills. Understanding these social cues can help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts with other dogs, leading to safer and more enjoyable interactions.

6.StrengthenedBondwithOwner

Socialization activities often involve the owner, which can strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Whether it’s taking your dog to a dog park, attending obedience classes, or going on group walks, these activities foster a deeper connection and mutual trust. Dogs that are well-socialized are often more responsive to their owners, making training and daily interactions smoother.

7.PreventingLonelinessandDepression

Dogs can experience loneliness and depression just like humans. Regular social interactions with other dogs can provide the companionship they crave. Having dog friends helps alleviate feelings of isolation, contributing to a happier and more content pet.

8.OpportunitiesforLearning

Socialization is a continuous learning process for dogs. Each new encounter teaches them something different, whether it’s about other dogs' play styles, boundaries, or hierarchies. This learning extends to their interactions with humans, making them more well-rounded and adaptable pets.

TipsforSocializingYourDog

• Start Early: Begin socializing your dog as a puppy. Early experiences are critical in shaping their behavior and social skills.

• Positive Reinforcement: Use treats and praise to reward your dog for positive interactions with other dogs and people.

• Controlled Environments: Introduce your dog to new situations gradually. Start in controlled environments where you can manage the interactions.

• Consistency: Regular socialization is key. Make it a part of your dog’s routine to interact with other dogs and people.

• Professional Help: If your dog shows signs of aggression or extreme fear, consider seeking help from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist.

Conclusion

Socialization is a fundamental aspect of your dog's overall health and happiness. By ensuring your dog has regular opportunities to interact with others, you contribute to their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Remember, a well-socialized dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog means a happy owner. So, take the time to help your dog make friends and enjoy the many benefits that come with a well-socialized pet.

Nefeli’s Story

Words of wisdom from a chubby and happy rescue…

First snow

Living in the north has its perks and this year has truly been amazing. The winter ended quite late and turned into a short but beautiful spring. The summer was long and warm and the fall rains only lasted for few weeks, before turning into a powdery snow that falls gently on the ground.

This means it would take more than an hour in good weather to get to the shops and during the storm it would be more than 2 hours easily. But you can take positive out of any situation and we decided to do just that.

The winter doesn’t come without its challenges and as the first snow landed, so did the first winter storm. For some reason people in the north always seem surprised by this and every year the news are filled with articles that start “Winter surprised the drivers”. But this time the storm had destroyed part of the electricity networks and our whole municipality was without electricity for almost 2 days. Since we live in the countryside, many kilometers away from the closest town, or even closest neighbors, we lack many of the conveniences the city brings.

Since there was no light, the whole house was lit with candles that created a gentle and warm feeling, almost like christmas was already here. The shepherds went to bring in the wood for the fireplace with a sledge and the house started to heat up slowly but steadily. The bed was moved from the bedroom to the dining room next to the fireplace and huge blankets and dog beds were laid on the floor for us to settle in. Since there was no running water we did fw trips to the well, to draw few buckets of fresh creek water.

Every second of the daylight was used to prepare the house for the night and when it was all done, we were quite exhausted. We watched the night sky and all the sparkling starts for a bit and headed indoors.

Born: 2013

Time at shelter: 6 months

Adopted: 2013

Passion: Food Goals in life: To spread happiness and love and to kiss as many noses as possible.

Nefeli is a full breed Greek Tail Wagger, and the most positive dog you could wish to meet. She has travelled to more than 10 countries doing tricks in dog shows and expos, spreading the sentiment: “Adopt, don’t shop”

.

Chasing snowballs and following the shepherds around had me completely spent and I was more than happy to jump to the bed and curl up next to the pack. Since there was not much to do on the cooking side, we roasted some sausages in the fire and of course half of them disappeared in my mouth. I fell asleep listening to mum read a book about the old times in the north.

You never know what surprises tomorrow might bring, but you can always find something beautiful in every moment. Living in the rural area for example is not for everyone, but for our little pack it is the perfect place. And no matter how hard things get, you can always get through it when you are surrounded by those you love.

Face challenges with those you love and they turn into cherished memories

Fiete, you stole many hearts and left a big paw mark on all of them. We miss you so much.

OUR MISSION & 2023 GOALS

The long term goal of any animal shelter should be to close down. Our dream is to live in a world where all pets have responsible owners who neuter them so that one day, there will be no more strays.

We believe that the key lies in educating the current and the next generation of pet owners, and in neutering programs.

Until we reach that goal, our aim is to be financially secure enough to be able to help every sick, injured or abandoned animal that finds it’s way to our gate and to provide the best care possible to all animals at the shelter until we can find them the good homes that they all deserve.

OUR 2023 PLANS FOR THE SHELTER ARE:

Secure finances for the animals that are in our care, so that when the time comes to move, we can afford to keep helping as many as possible.
