Hej! Hi! Ciao! I am Sara, freshly elected editor for Lambskallet. For those that have never met me, I became a member of Gotland’s a year ago (more or less) and I immediately felt that I could call the nation "home". I became active as a Weekend Fika Host, International Secretary, member of PR and Freshers Committees, and now here I am, writing for this edition of our beloved journal. I started working on it before getting officially elected, and since 1Q alone is supposed to produce Lambskallet when there is no editor, I thought I could make his to-do list slightly shorter by taking the responsibility of putting this issue together. For the trust I received, I would like to thank the curators, PR committee and everyone who supported the initiative. Helping August was fun as it was exciting to contact members from the nation for contributions. But enough about me and more about this edition of Lambskallet! In these pages you will find a lot of what has happened at Gotland’s after the great re-opening since the end (can we say it?) of the pandemic. The past weeks have been very busy in Östra Ågatan 13, and after a year and a half where everything was digital, we were finally able to have physical receptions, gasques, games and events! And of course, we could dance together again in clubs at last! I hope that when reading these pages you will feel the same positive energy and enthusiasm that we experienced during these past months, but most of all I wish we can keep writing and publishing about fun activities and members’ interests that make us call the nation “home”.

Okay here we go, a couple of hours until deadline and I’m writing my kuratorsspalt. In the office? Naah! At home? Nononono. Sitting on the dirty floor of the terminal before the ferry to Finland? Correct! I would like to argue that this is not due to procrastination. See, I had a plan. I wanted to use the long ferry ride as an opportunity for all of the Curators to write our spalts together, a fun bonding moment! I was looking forward to having to push Olle and Joel to write their contributions, scolding them on the importance of showing those of our members who aren’t often at the Nation who we Curators are. And NOW it turns out that they already know what to write about. They went behind my back and actually planned something, just like I had asked them to….

1Q, 2Q, 3Q and KXM on their visit to the nation in Lund

So here I am, suddenly realizing I’m screwed. "What am I to do?? I promised Sara it would be done tonight!" I proclaim to my colleagues with a thinly veiled desperation in my voice. Olle suggests to write everything in rhyme, let’s give it a shot: I’ll write my spalt on vers, it’ll be a pärs, I’d rather be in Bettys drinking bärs... Nope, definitely not doing that. "Can’t you write a spalt about how 1Q isn’t actually the most important Curator?", Joel asks with a smug smile on his face. Pffft. No help from there. Maybe I could write something fun about our journey, I think, as we are finally allowed to board the ferry. Something about how the four of us all felt like we had this trip planned, until thirty minutes before we left when we realized we had nothing planned at all. "What do you wear in Finland?? Do we have to bring a gift? How does the Euro stand right now??", or maybe I could write something about how Erika and Joel are distracting us all with their relentless kissing. No, can’t write about that last one, Erika explicitly told me I can’t. Their relationship is a secret apparently. Maybe, just maybe, I could write something meaningful. Something about why Gotlands nation is the best nation. Something about what the nation has done for me, how it is important in my life, and how I hope it is, was, or will be important in the life of whoever is reading this too. Woops, I ran out of space. I’ll have to save that for the next one.

2 Ah! My first kuratorsspalt, how special. And what an honour! What to write about… well that’s a question for another time. But for now I think my best tip for any future "kuratorsspaltsauthors" is to: 1. Write it after at least 2-3 beers (or which ever beverage you prefer) 2. Do it as late as possible (just like real exams. Ah how I miss them…) 3. Don’t think ahead, you don’t need an idea (or well, I had an idea but half of it is saved on the 2Q-computer and I’m currently writing on 1Q August’s. Love ya’!) 4. Even if you have an idea, don’t think about it, because nobody is probably gonna like it (I wanted to go in 3Q Joel’s steps and write a whole essay on Ris Jerk… but nobody is gonna read that) 5. And finally. End. It. With. A. Pun (Preferably a good one).

3Q An Ode to Lund Or Why Lund Isn’t as horrible as people have said - but still obviously not as good as Uppsala - but still pretty good and I see why some people can make a sensible argument for Lund being a fun place to study, although they obviously don’t have Lambskallegasquen or Gotlands nation. Lund is trash. A fact every self-respecting Uppsaliensare knows by heart. Let me say it again, Lund is TRASH. But wait, have I been too brash? Now, hold up – you might say! Is this treachery? Has our 3Q switched sides to our inferior cousin?

Q It’s probably not the greatest idea to give out these tips, both in my first kuratorsspalt without any experience, and I won’t know if it will be much help to anyone reading. But in general, I feel like you can take these tips and apply them to anything in life. What does that mean you may ask? I don’t know, it’s up to you! And now for the pun: the ferry to Finland is very…. Merry! Merry Christmas everyone!

On our recent trip there - after a Lund hiatus of several years – I found myself charmed. A beautiful town not unlike Wisby. The people pleasant. People work at nations for vouchers for food, brytleg and sexor. Not for cash. Hard plastic glasses everywhere, no destroyed glasses anywhere. And nations have insane amounts of housing! And you bring presents for your table neighbor! That’s nice. And spritzer is a pretty good song, I guess? EEEEUUUUUUUGGGHHHH! What am I even saying? Oh my god. Am I saying I like Lund? No, that’s heresy! Blasphemy! Sacrilege! But I am saying I do appreciate some things about Lund. Uppsala may be number 1, but perhaps we can learn things from our little cousin in Lund? Maybe I am? Oh Jesus, I’m sorry.

The return of the Reccegasque

The return of the Reccegasque After long months of virtual gasques and digital events, the nation was finally able to welcome back its members and – most importantly – welcome in a large number of new members for the Reccegasque on Saturday, 18.09.2021. In the afternoon before the gasque, the freshers committee and some of the most eager freshers made their way to Universitetshuset to attend the university’s reception. The reception included welcome speeches, music and the awarding of the ‘fresher of the semester’ award for the past spring semester. Some of the members of the freshers committee have only been at the nation during the pandemic, so they were at least as excited as the freshers to finally be able to experience a real-life reception in Universitetshuset. After the reception, everyone headed back to the nation to get ready for the gasque and meet the rest of the guests for pre-drinks. Everyone was clearly enjoying the fact that they finally had an opportunity to get dressed up, go out and socialize again after the long months of limited social interactions. Keeping in mind that the pandemic is not fully over yet, the gasque followed the covid restrictions of the time: eating and drinking was only allowed while being seated and there was a maximum of eight guests per table. This ensured that the return to in-person events went safely and smoothly. The virtual period had been so long that it took many members a few rounds of toasting to remember the proper procedures and get back into the habit of toasting. For the first time in a long while, songs and songbooks were in use again as well. Everybody enthusiastically joined in the singing and the songbooks were passed around the tables to collect happy new memories. To keep the guests entertained, the evening also included speeches as well as a performance by the nation’s choir. And what would a gasque be without a släpp? The fact that this was a ‘seated släpp’ in no way diminished the guests’ joy at being able to socialize and interact with each other in real life again. With its great food, great entertainment and especially great company, the Reccegasque was definitely a wonderful way to return to in-person nation activities and has definitely made everyone look forward to many more gasques and events in the future!

Det var så härligt på Gotlands nation, jag gillar alla på Gotlands nation. Och bli inte förskräckt, varenda kotte är släkt, så för en gute är all perfekt!

20 år av Gotlandsparken On a rainy autumn day in 2001 it happened. The small area between Gotlands nation and the Fyris river was given a name. A name that would echo in eternity – Gotlandsparken!

This was celebrated in as grandiose a manner as one could possibly imagine. A stage was built, speeches were held, important people were invited and, most importantly, korv and ballonger was handed out to anyone passing by. It was a glorious evening, which might have fallen into oblivion, had it not been for the existence of one particular journal.

One sunny spring day in 2021, the Curators of Gotlands nation were reading an old edition of “Lambskallet”. They were just laughing about how absurd it was that the Curators 20 years ago had called themselves Ett/Två/Tre-Ku instead of 1/2/3-Q when they stumbled upon something fascinating. “Korv- och ballongfest, what on earth…”, they fell silent as they were awed by the magnificence of the event they were reading about.

“Magnifico!” “Excellente!” “We need to do this again!”

And so it was, that on the 23rd of September in 2021, Gotlands nation had its second ever Korv- och ballongfest. All thanks to Lambskallet.

Klädbytardag Clothing Swap Day Gotland nations Home- and Culture Committee (HK-nämnden) have organised Clothing Swaps (also called Nordic Swap Day) at the nation since 2018. The interest of the event has proven to be very large and this far we have held 6 different events. The person that has been mostly driving this event forward is Turid Fyrberg (me, the person behind this article!!). I started to go to Clothing Swap Days back in 2015 and when I became a member of Gotland Nation in 2018 I thought that this kind of event could be something fun for the students and nation life. Throughout the peak of the pandemic there were no Clothing Swaps. But the month before the restrictions got lifted in Sweden we held a small Clothing Swap Day, in which you had to register to participate. What can a Clothes Swap Day contribute with?

How does it work?

You will get notified about the event on our Facebook page or maybe see it on a poster. You come to the nation (usually on a Saturday or a Sunday) to hand in your clothes between a specific timestamp. You are allowed to bring an unlimited amount of clothes that are fresh and whole in exchange for tickets, in which one garment corresponds to one ticket (usually you can get up to 10 tickets max). now have the chance to refresh your wardrobe. The exchange will then happen some hours later You get rid of some clothes, which become new between a specific time. When you pick the and uplifting for someone else. It’s a win-win clothes you like you can check out, your clothes concept! and tickets will then be counted so that we know that you haven’t taken more than you are allowed to. Then you go home with a fabulous new wardrobe. Garments that nobody picks will be donated (usually to Röda Korset second hand shop). People are shopping far too much and it affects the environment and all life in different ways around the world. The wear-and-teartrend is not durable. A Clothes Swap Day is a fun, social and completely free activity where no nation card (usually) is required which gives concrete environmental benefit. The event is usually held during Saturday or Sunday in collaboration with Jakens Café. So that you also can have some tasty fika. There will always be both food and dessert options to choose from. Gotlands nation har en mycket lång och spännande historia med mycket motgångar men även framgångar. Mitt namn är Samuel Lässman och jag är nyvald teaterförman på nationen. Mitt första uppdrag var att dra ihop en spexgrupp till 80 tals spex som var det första vanliga spexet efter pandemin. Det var snabba puckar och på tisdagen samma vecka som spexet så samlades vi 5 personer på Gotlands bibliotek för att tillsammans skriva manus. Spexet byggde på 80 talen. Ja 4 olika åttiotalen från Gotlands nations grundande 1681 till det färgglada 1980 med musik och dans. Själva spexet byggde på att det var 4 olika personer från de olika decennierna som träffades under gasquen och marskalken lede storyn framåt. Först så tog marskalken allas uppmärksamhet och berättade att fiskus har hittats på nationens vind. En fiskus är alltså en nations kista som man innan man fick sina hus hade alla sina saker i. Flera nationer har kvar dem och Gotlands står till exempel inne på kontoret. En väldigt fin låtsas fiskus rullades fram som var tillverkad av en butiksvagn. Medan marskalken stod och pratade om vad en fiskus var och varför de fanns så kom det helt plötsligt upp en sjökapten upp ur fikusen! Jag spelade alltså denna kapten och det gjorde orimligt ont att sitta på gallret till vagnen men det var det värt för publikens reaktion var väldigt bra. Han ville plugga men fick inte det på grund av att man endast kunde plugga teologi förr på Universitet. Han kanske inte heller var så mycket till kapten utan istället en sjörövare som var ett populärt yrke i Visby förr. Han gav sina pengar för att grunda denna nation.

Sedan så kom helt plötsligt Marie Antoinette in som har gått ändå från Paris för att leta efter Axel Von Fersen vilket har tagit ungefär 300 år. Hon har lite ont i huvudet och hon blev glad när hon hörde att alla skulle få fika. Efter det så dyker den legendariska Betty Petterson upp vilket är den första kvinnliga studenten i Sverige som var medlem på Gotlands. Sedan bryter Lasse Magnusson den tråkiga stämningen med lite ABBA och berättar att han kommer att vara här i flera decennier. Sedan bryter ett meddelande från framtiden fram och berättar att det nu heter Gotlands Universitet på Campus Uppsala.

Detta planerades alltså av vår nya teatergrupp på någon dag. Stor eloge till alla inblandade! Om en enda hade saknats hade det inte gått att genomföra. Till framtiden vill vi bli fler och kommer att ha träffar varje onsdag 18:00 på Gotlands Nation. We do everything in English and we have meetings every Wednesday 18:00 at Gotland's Nation.

A A tale tale of of two two marshals marshals in in one one I joined the nationæ Gothlandica in early September this year. I was walking down the road, coming from the university building towards the right side of the river. I had heard a lot of great things about Gotland’s nation, mainly from now-teaterförman Samuel Lässman, but I had procrastinated on joining. At the time I was doing quite poorly mentally, and I didn’t feel like I would be able to 1, fit in at a nation, and 2, have the fortitude to be a good member. This evening however, I was on a bit of a kick, as I had just come from Lässman’s apartment, and I said to myself: “If I see my buss pass by before I reach the station, I’ll see if I can seize the opportunity and join Gotland’s”. It is seldom that one is as thankful to have missed their buss as I am about that night. I had high expectations about the nation; I’d heard so much good. When I barged in, just post closing registration for the day, I was met with open arms and welcoming smiles. Though it was closed, I was royally accommodated. After signing and properly joining I was not only given answers to all possible questions I had, but I was shown the entire nation house in a private tour, visiting everywhere from Festsalen to Bomben. After a lagom flaily, for want of a monolingual descriptor, fresher’s reception, and the premiere night of Salongen, my expectations had been met and exceeded. I wanted to give something back to the nation and help in hopefully making it even better. So, with a single day to the Landskap, I email Valnämnden and put myself up for two positions. The day after I was elected as both Marshal, and Nation Marshal. This has turned out to have been my single most enjoyable decision at Uppsala University since my admittance in January 2021. As Marshal in Marksalkkonventet for Gotland’s, I was at the 50th anniversary symposium for the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. It was a simple job, I stood in my tailcoat and student cap outside the aula in the university building and tried to look nice. The best part was during the four processions that our honoured guest made in and out of the aula, landing me at a distance from her royal highness, crown princess Victoria less than two feet; an honour bestowed on few and one I wouldn’t have received had it not been for the nation. As Nation Marshal, I have had the great privilege and honour to be the nation’s toastmaster and representative host at our gasques. My time as Nation Marshal at the 80’s Gasque was nothing short of amazing. Things were not running smoothly, in fact, it was utterly chaotic; but we always made it work and if you were there I hope you’ll agree when I say it turned out really quite good despite the chaos behind the curtains. I loved every minute of it. Truly Gotland’s nation has given me lots of fantastic opportunities and memories that I will cherish my whole life, and I have every expectation that that will continue.

Double Marshal

Det var ett nöje att återigen få vandra från nationen med stockarna i syfte att störta stangg. Denna vackra höstdag med falnande löv i höstens alla kulörer vandrade vi tillsammans från Gotlands nation till en gräsplätt nedanför slottet. Under några lönnar modell större utövade vi den gotländska leken. Nog måste vi ha sett ut som ett gäng gamla gutar som gjort den långa resan från ön till fastlandet.

Stanggstörtningg går ut på att man lyfter en stock (på gutamål kallar man den stangg) som är ungefär tre meter lång för att sedan stöta den så långt man kan. Det finns dessutom vissa regler för hur stocken ska landa. Viss teknisk färdighet är nödvändigt för att lyfta upp den tunga stocken och balansera den lodrätt mot sin axel, sina båda handflator under stocken. På bilderna på nästa sida kan du se några av momenten i stanggstörtningg. Det vill till att man lyfter upp ena änden av stocken på sitt knä. Därefter trycker man på baksidan av stocken med ena armen och lyfter stocken med den andra. I det här skedet är man nästan sittande. Sedan gäller det att återfå balansen ståendes. När balansen åter är funnen går man framåt mot kastgränsen och kastar i väg stocken genom en dynamisk rörelse med hela kroppen.

Föga förvånande var sporten ny för det stora flertalet som deltog vid denna stanggstörtningg. Många var nyfikna och glada att pröva på denna något exotiska lek. Nästa tillfälle ges samma dag som Lambskallegasquen. Hur gick det då? De flesta gick bet på att störta den lite större stanggen, som visserligen är av dammodell (vilka starka damer det finns på Gotland!). Lyckligtvis kunde undertecknad tillika instruktör visa hur det skulle gå till. Den lite mindre stanggen som vi tagit med för just ett sådant här scenario kom väl till pass, och den lyckades vi störta allesammans. Därefter vandrade vi åter mot nationshuset med vår dyrbara last på axlarna. Nog kände man sig som en riktig gute trots allt. Adam Söderlund

Fika t ur Kubb is an old game that is said to originate from Gotland during the Viking Ages. The game is very common to play on Gotland, and the Gotlanders takes pride in this. There is even a VM in kubb that has been taking place in Rone every year since 1995. The Fresher’s and the HK committees thought it would be nice for new and old members and others interested to come together and try out the gotlandic game. For some the game would be totally new and for others it would be well known. In the late afternoon on Friday the 15th of October the committees and participants met to play kubb in Ekonomikumparken. It was quite a chilly day, not very sunny and the autumn leaves were covering the ground.

Us members of the HK and Fresher’s committees got in our best kubb spirits, dressed warmly and headed to the park to set up the game. Due to the cold weather we were quite unsure about how many participants that would join us for the game. There was no need to worry though, we didn’t have to wait for long until people started to show up, stoked to play. We became enough people to play two sets of kubb at once and all players seemed to have a good time. After a couple of rounds of kubb we headed to Gotland nation’s pub to get something to eat and drink as well as to warm up. The atmosphere among the participants was friendly and chatty it was just a great way to end a lovely day. Evelina Bertell

On the Saturday the day after the kubb the Fresher’s and HK committees got together again, but this time to have a fika crawl. The koncept of fika crawl is kind of the same as in a pub crawl – you visit different nations, one after the other, and have something to eat or drink at each nation. Four nations offered fika on the Saturday. We began the crawl in the foornon at Snerikes (they have a very appetizing carrot cake by the way). After some time there eating and chatting we went to Smålands, followed by Norrlands and then we finished in the afternoon with a visit to ÖG. Most of the nations offered sandwiches, cakes and coffee/tea. All of them had something nice to eat/drink. The nation that were standing out a little with their selection of fika was ÖG. Their creative fika was called Hattes Ölcafé (beer café). Except from coffee/tea and one or two types of cakes they served beer, soup, grilled cheese and croissants. Evelina Bertell 18

(no online version does it justice - they take it far to serious) Vadsbro is a rural community in Sörmland that historically gave its name to a military band of horse-riders ("skvadron"), recruiting by royal decree from both Uppland and Sörmland.

Like all soldiers throughout time, they were motivated by their leaders with fantasies of glory and women admiring them. Vadsbro skvadrons visa can be viewed as a collection of a soldier's attempts to charm all the single ladies he passes during his military duty. For elevated romcom atmosphere in modern days, we have added arm and hand gestures that go along with the ridiculous promises made in the lyrics. We even bring the last verse into a slow-motion melody to emphasize the melodramatic voice. I adore it. Gute Nacht

In the evening before the Spring Ball, suitors would have bought a ticket for themselves and one for the one they wished to have for a date. Each of them would serenade under the window or balcony of their heart's desire and if the invitation was accepted, a candle would be lit. Luckily, most suitors had more than one true soul mate and move to the next if the candle's answer was no. Today we dress up nicely and bike in groups from place to place to sing many serenades for those close to our hearts. If they deem us sincere and sweet enough, a basket with sandwiches and the occasional drink will be lowered down on a string. Gute Nacht tends be were one or two young lovers breaks out in a solo in hopes to catch the attention of someone up there on the balcony/in the window. Others in the area sometimes open their windows and drown the lovesongs with EDM or black grindhouse metal. Do not miss out on serenade night 2022!

O gamla klang- och jubeltid Oh Good Old Chimes of Glory Days Swedes love singing and they hardly miss the chance to chant, especially when a toast is involved. If you have been to a nation, you have also probably been to a gasque. If you have been to a gasque, you might have noticed that the singing - either to the songbook or to greet for a speech or by the exceptional choir - is an essential and cherished part of the gasque itself. Despite the song-master does an excellent job leading through the songs of the night, things get inevitably wild after few snaps, and that is the moment where you realize that Swedes really do love singing. The songbook can be quite a mysterious creature to non-Swedish speakers: the melody, the pronunciation of the words the gestures accompanying specific verses... not to mention the meaning of the lyrics. The solution for the first 3 mysteries is simple: go to gasques! After few gasques (and snaps) you will be exceptionally fluent in the "songbook-language". For the meaning, it might not be that immediate, but this article is here to help.
