FROM TRASH TO TREASURE
Growing up with a deep connection to the sea, GOT BAG founder Benjamin Mandos had the vision to collect and recycle plastic waste from the ocean and coastal areas, transforming them into backpacks and bags. Since 2016, GOT BAG has been pioneering the iconic ROLLTOP, the world’s first backpack made of Ocean Impact Plastic.
Through our dedicated clean-up program in Indonesia, we collect plastic from the sea and coastal regions. With an innovative supply chain, we demonstrate holistic approaches to combat plastic in our oceans. Our work aims to raise global awareness about conscious use of natural resources, setting an example for innovative product culture. Together with the GOT BAG community and our timeless, minimalist travel companions, we create a positive impact for both people and the environment.
DEAR GOT BAG PARTNERS,
We’re more than halfway through the year and have been blown away by the awesome feedback on our new products. Exciting news – I’m thrilled to announce that following the popularity of the MOON BAG last year, we’ve launched another hit for 2024: the PRO PACK. As always, I’ll give you a quick rundown of the key updates in my upcoming intro.
PRODUCT UPDATES
Exciting news – we’re bringing back the popular MOON BAG in SMALL and LARGE sizes as core products starting the second half of the year. You asked for it, and we made it happen! They’ll be available in all Core Colors: black, bass, algae, ocean blue, shark, scallop, soft shell, and seahorse. And hey, have you checked out our latest hit, the PRO PACK? It’s been our best backpack launch since the ROLLTOP! If you’re still on the fence, it’s definitely worth a try. Just a heads-up though, we’re careful with our new stock to avoid overproduction, so it’s first come, first served all year. Plus, we’re expanding our lineup with the PRO PACK TRAVEL – a travel backpack featuring a separate shoe compartment and easy U-shaped access to the main compartment.
LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) ROLLTOP
A life cycle assessment can record a product’s environmental impact. It not only provides transparent information for consumers but also
forms the basis for measures to minimize a company’s environmental impact strategically.
For the assessment, we looked at the entire process, from collecting the plastic as part of our clean-up program to producing the backpack, all transport, including the acceptance of a purchase in our online store, right through to disposal. The calculation shows that using materials made from Ocean Impact Plastic and other recycled plastics leads to significantly lower emissions at the material level. At the same time, emissions from transportation and the production process are slightly higher due to the longer transport routes. Due to the savings at the material level, the overall balance is around 22% lower than for the same fictitious backpack without recycled content. (For more information, please visit our website www. got-bag.com)
PUFFER CAPSULE & NEW MATERIAL
Our super stylish PUFFER Capsule will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2024. For the first time, it appears completely new and is made of feather-light nylon instead of the previously used polyester made of rPET, which we have used for all other bags and backpacks. The nylon is made from
recycled fishing nets, allowing us to incorporate another type of plastic into our products. We are already getting phenomenal feedback, so I am happy to draw your attention to this trend.
PARTNERSHIPS
At GOT BAG we always strive to work with individuals and organizations who do good and create a positive impact. That’s why we’re super excited to be partnering this year with amazing people and organizations like professional tennis athlete and philanthropist Sloane Stephens, the greatest longboard surfer of all time, Kassia Meador, everyday carry champions Field Notes, Hollywood actor and activist Jason Momoa and ocean conservation champion Sea Legacy, founded by Christina Mittermaier and Paul Nicklen. Stay tuned for some breath-taking collabs and new products launching in Q3 and Q4!

Who collects the Ocean Impact Plastic?
Our clean-up program began in Demak on the north coast of Java. This Indonesian region is located at the mouth of several rivers, which, in addition to the plastic carried into the sea by wind and rain, transport large amounts of plastic waste from the inside to the sea. We now also collect in the regions of Jepara in the north and Bantul on the south coast. The clean-up program includes fishermen, collectors, and partner organizations who collect plastic from the sea, mangrove regions, and coastal areas, like delta regions with rivers. At our Collection Points, villagers who do not have a functioning waste management system can also dispose of their household plastic waste. With the help of these 19 collecting communities, over 1,000,000 kg of Ocean Impact Plastic have already been collected.
At our foundation Yayasan GOT BAG Indonesia, local participants collect plastic waste and are paid depending on the amount collected. Seven permanent employees take care of the administrative and operational project management on-site.
Why do we sort the Ocean Impact Plastic before processing?
There are many different types of plastic. To create a real impact with our clean-up program, we don’t just collect the easily recyclable parts (e.g., PET bottles). Therefore, the collected mix of materials must first be sorted by type of plastic. All recyclable types of plastic (e.g., PET, PP, HDPE, LDPE) are brought to our warehouse in Jepara. There, 12 workers manually sort the material by type of plastic and color and remove labels and caps. Approximately 15% of our Ocean Impact Plastic collected in the clean-up program consists of PET, which we recycle through our partner for use in our production.

What happens to the remaining plastic waste?
For some types of plastics that we cannot use for products ourselves, such as PP, HDPE, LDPE, PS, and PC, we are continuously expanding our network with locally based companies that can mechanically recycle them. They are processed into so-called secondary raw materials before they can be used for other, new products. Other types of plastics cannot be processed at all, not with sufficient quality, or only with disproportionately high effort. Currently, we pass them on for thermal recovery, where they are burned as an alternative to fossil fuels to produce energy. Third-party companies can support this form of recycling by purchasing certificates to offset their plastic consumption from our partner Cleanhub. The proceeds are reinvested in the infrastructure of the clean-up program.
How
is the Ocean Impact Plastic recycled?
6
How is yarn created from the pellets?
We process the pellets into 300 denier yarns in a spinning mill. Denier is expressed in grams per 9,000 meters – in our case, this means that a 9,000-meter-long thread weighs 300 grams. These yarns are then stretched enough to be strong enough for later weaving. For black fabrics, we dye the yarn already during spinning – this dyeing process does not require water or solvents. Additionally, it is advantageous that the spin-dyed yarn has extremely high color fastness.
How is the yarn processed into the robust GOT BAG fabric?
The yarns made from Ocean Impact Plastic are woven into a particularly robust 600D or a lighter 300D fabric at a weaving mill in Shanghai, China. For this, the best yarn qualities (AA) are selected for the warp (basic framework) since the requirements for tensile strength are highest for the dense weaving.
The raw materials are compressed by two additional workers using a press machine in our warehouse after sorting. The PET material is then transported to our recycling partner in Surabaya. Here, the material is shredded, washed, and extruded into rPET pellets. To meet our need for rPET for the yarn production of our products, we additionally source Ocean Bound Plastic from certified partners in the region.
How is the fabric turned into a finished product?
Our products are either waterproof high-frequency welded or sewn. For high-frequency welding, the materials are cut to size beforehand and then welded with specially made forms in the high-frequency machines. For this, the TPU material at the welding seams - and only there - is melted with an electromagnetic alternating field of about 27 MHz and joined by the pressure of a press. The seams are then 100% waterproof and of very high strength.
For the sewn products, we use fabrics without TPU coating. The cut fabric parts are sewn and locked with special sewing machines for backpacks. We now exclusively manufacture sewn products in Vietnam in the Ho Chi Minh City region.
Our products do not consist exclusively of our fabric made from Ocean Impact Plastic – additional product-specific accessories such as buckles, zippers, straps, foams, and webbing are added. As far as possible, these components are made from recycled materials, although some are not yet available on the market. We specify the product composition in percentage terms by weight in our products. To become more transparent, we have started listing all individual product components and their material composition in our newer products.
All black products are usually yarn-dyed (spin-dyed). This means that black color pigments are added to the yarn during spinning. This eliminates the need for the usual wet dyeing process. For all non-black products, we dye the textile directly after weaving with dispersion dyes in a nearby dyeing mill. We avoid dyeing and additives that are on a negative list (e.g., from Ökotex, Bluesign, ZDHC). After dyeing, the fabrics to be waterproof welded are equipped with a thin TPU layer of about 0.15 mm on the backside, the latter inside. A very thin permanent water-repellent finish with PU is applied to the outside. Finally, the fabric is cut and high-frequency welded in special machines. All fabrics for sewn products only receive a thin waterproof PU layer on the back and a PFC-free DWR impregnation on the outside. 5 4

CORAL GARDENERS GLOBAL MOVEMENT FOR OCEAN
GARDENERS – A MOVEFOR THE
CORAL REEFS ARE THE MOST BIODIVERSE AND VALUABLE ECOSYSTEMS ON OUR PLANET, YET THEY ARE AMONG THE MOST IMPACTED BY CLIMATE CHANGE AND RISING HUMAN PRESSURES, NOW IN PERIL OF GOING EXTINCT BY 2050.
CORAL GARDENERS BEGAN AS A SMALL GROUP OF ISLAND KIDS WHO WITNESSED THE RAPID DEGRADATION OF THEIR LOCAL REEF BREAK IN MO’OREA, FRENCH POLYNESIA, ONLY TO REALIZE THE FULL EXTENT OF THIS WORLDWIDE CRISIS.
From that day, they set out to save the world’s coral reefs and revolutionize ocean conservation through restoration efforts, scientific and innovative development, as well as community awareness and engagement.
The core of their mission focuses on coral reef restoration, utilizing the latest methods to grow heat-resilient corals in nurseries and planting them back onto the reef to assist in the natural recovery of the ecosystem, and ultimately restoring all the services and wonders that coral reefs provide.
Paired with their restoration efforts, Coral Gardeners also established their own in-house research and development center, CG Labs, to develop the tools and technologies needed to better understand and protect coral reefs. Their team of engineers and scientists is working hand in hand with the gardeners to continually optimize their fieldwork to restore the world’s coral reefs at an unprecedented speed and scale.
To make this happen, Coral Gardeners have
gathered a diverse team of individuals from various corners of the world, bringing their unique perspectives and skills to create a unique force in the field of ocean conservation. They are now expanding their restoration efforts to new local communities globally, creating opportunities for people to make a career around caring for the places they call home.
What started as a homegrown project on the island of Mo’orea has evolved into a global movement with operations across the South Pacific Ocean, from French Polynesia to Fiji, and to the heart of Southeast Asia in Thailand, with more locations soon to follow. It will take worldwide action to save the reefs.
GOT BAG has partnered with Coral Gardeners to bolster their efforts and bring funding and global awareness to their mission through purpose-built collections, doubling down on impact by removing ocean plastic and revitalizing our reefs all at once.
In addition to raising impact and awareness, the partnership relies on shared values to create tangible ways for individuals to take action by supporting the collection and proudly wearing it out in the world, wherever you are!
