Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell

The New Empire Ballroom Ragtime Dance Orchestra presents

This funny but moving piece won the award for Best Comedy at the 1988 Laurence Olivier Awards. It takes the form of a monologue by a 42-year-old Liverpool mother and housewife, Mrs Joe Bradshaw, before and after a transforming holiday to Greece. Inside Mrs Joe Bradshaw is the former Shirley Valentine longing to emerge. Her self-esteem battered by school, marriage and life in general, she finds herself talking to the wall while her husband is out working. She feels that her life is terribly mundane as she compares scenes in her current life with what she used to be like. When her best friend wins an all-expensespaid vacation to Greece for two, Shirley grasps the opportunity to head for the sun and leave her current drudgery behind. The note in the kitchen reads, “Gone to Greece, back in two weeks”. With much humour, warmth, sympathy and human insight, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society. Young Frankenstein

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

Young Frankenstein is a musical by Mel Brooks (of The Producers fame) based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder (of Willy Wonka fame). Mel Brooks described Young Frankenstein as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially of the 1931 Universal Pictures production of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. From Australia’s leading producer of high quality entertainment for kids and families comes the International Touring Production of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt with an all Australian cast. We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is a wonderful story of a family out for a walk and on the lookout for a growling bear - they have to march through long swishy grass, wade through thick gloopy mud and even battle a snow storm before entering a big dark cave where they might just finally spot the glinty eyes of a slobbering, gigantic bear winking at them through the blackness. Expect catchy songs, interactive scenes and plenty of hands-on adventure – plus a few special surprises! The 55 minute mini-musical captures the fun and frolics of a father who is clearly still a kid at heart and his three children. They include a tiny, intrepid bear hunter in the making, a baby strapped to Dad’s backpack, the family dog and of course ... a very big brown cuddly bear! Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced A strange notice appears in the morning paper of a quaint English village, “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks, at 6.30 p.m.” It’s quite the surprise to Letitia Blacklock (Judi Jones), owner of Little Paddocks, as she didn’t place it and none of her companions know more than she. Miss Blacklock takes it in stride and prepares herself for that evening’s guests. Naturally, the villagers are intrigued by the notice. Several of them appear awkwardly at her doorstep and with definite interest. As the clock strikes 6.30, what follows is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities, a second death, a determined Inspector (Mike Jeffries) who grimly follows the twists and turns, and Miss Marple (Fran Kendall) who provides the final solution, at some risk to herself, in a dramatic confrontation just before the final curtain.
