This photo essay is about the rare mountain gorillas found in the Rwandan section of the Virunga volcanoes in Central Africa - the Volcanoes National Park. It is set in a context of personal experiences during the past forty years, full of happiness, joy, success, and fun - as well as dark times of tragedy, sadness and despair. The story of the gorillas is entwined with that of their forest habitat and the scientific researchers who studied them, but, most of all with the people of Rwanda.
Alan Goodall first went to study these gorillas for his doctoral research project in 1970 - with Dian Fossey who had started her work three years earlier. Now, through his eyes and lens, and with his wife Margaret and daughters Fiona and Marisa, we see some of the beautiful landscapes in Rwanda - especially the impressive volcanoes region and their unique forests. His story takes us into the daily lives of gorillas and their foraging migrations, feeding habits and social structure - all in close up detail.
