Jen Smith

Stabler, WA — directions below jazyjen@gmail.com jensmithart.com
I am a charcoal artist, inspired by the natural world. I work on custom cradled birch panels built by my husband that I apply white paint to and sand off to let the wood grain show, or I will just work directly on the panel. My work is black and white and very contrasting, with color only occasionally finding its way in. I have a beautiful industrial studio that I share with my husband that sits right at the edge of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Steve Kowats
703-624-0892
962 Wind River Road, Carson, Washington kovachmetalsmith@gmail.com www.kovachmetalsmith.com
Steve Kowats has been a professional welder and fabricator since the age of 18. He retired in 2019 and now relies on his decades of experience working with all kinds of metal to create organic sculptures from found objects. He finds inspiration in nature and his work reflects it. Creating pieces that make people ask themselves “is that metal or wood?” “Is that leaf made from copper?” Steve creates for satisfaction, joy, and for the process itself.

From my log cabin in the woods, I draw inspiration from the nature around me. The materials I carve are of the earth and sea, as are the totems and jewelry I create from fossil walrus, mammoth, and corals.

I am a metalsmith/artist who grew up to the sound of a cross-peen hammer. I was soldering and working in my parents production studio at the age of 12. After making the Gorge my home in 2003, the beautiful landscape is always at the heart of my designs which are often about contrast, form and technique. My studio is located in downtown White Salmon, here I make jewelry and wearable art of sterling, gold, steel, brass, and copper.

Her studio is a surreal exhibit of the beauty she finds in the world. Take a drive along the wild and scenic Klickitat River valley and you won’t be disappointed. You may spot a bald eagle or great blue heron on your way. Collections of stones, works in progress, and obscure objects await you.

Clean lines and delicious color are signature to my work. I collect rocks and other found items, using them as base forms for unique, organic vessels. Multiple layers of pigment are hand applied, building rich texture and a tactile finish that begs to be touched! I am drawn to the clean and simple aesthetic for which the mid-century modern Scandi designers became well recognized. Stylized botanicals often appear on my work by process of sgraffito carving and/or free form pencil scribblings.

All my ceramics are hand built. I can make just about anything with clay. I usually build what ever my mood allows. I work in my home in a bedroom converted to a studio and a kiln in the garage. Sometimes I get inspiration from my large flower garden. Some of the time, I see a picture of a teapot, a box, or a sculpture and try that path. At this time I’m doing little clay houses and strange weird characters… also horses carrying different objects… and chickens… All fun!

After taking an enamel class as a metal design major, I instantly fell in love with enameling. Watching a powder turn to glass is magical. I fire transparent and opaque enamels on copper and silver making one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. I have been taking silversmithing classes for the last four years and have been using gemstones, shells, and found objects in my silver jewelry.
