Finding Your Groove

®

On April 1, we’re breaking out the tie-dyed shirts and hippie outfits to celebrate our second annual Hippie Dash … and you’re invited! You can even bring your four-legged friends to celebrate a culture based on peace, love and understanding.

Last year more than 1,000 people walked, ran or rolled as part of Goodwill’s inaugural Hippie Dash. Whether they came to the actual event or took part virtually, everyone shared in the hippie spirit. In a society that increasingly pits people against each other or highlights their differences, the idea of finding common ground, together, really appeals to me. Goodwill’s strategic vision is to create greater opportunities for people to build a stronger community, and our guiding principles include treating all people with dignity, respect and compassion. If you want to see that in action, see Naomi’s story on page 11. She made a fresh start and reunited with her children thanks to a hand up, not a hand out. She is one of thousands of success stories each year. This year’s Hippie Dash is a celebration of all that is good in the community, and honors the success people have found through hard work. Please know that when you donate to Goodwill, shop in our stores, hire a Goodwill client or volunteer, you help people find their groove. Please join us for the fun and help celebrate that!

Sincerely,

President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits Our Mission: To help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. BookWorks Benefactors! There are LOTS of fans of Goodwill’s BookWorks childhood literacy program – and no wonder! Since 1999, the program has put books into the hands and homes of children who otherwise may not have the opportunity to have them. Dedicated volunteers read to children at Head Start centers and other locations and present each child with a personalized book to take home. BookWorks also helps get books to elementary-aged students at schools in need. The program covers an eight-county area and serves more than 29,000 children annually! For information on our annual Book Drive see page 3.

Board member Louise Lopez of PwC, left, presents our President, Debbie Passerini, with a check for BookWorks.

Wells Fargo employees enjoy volunteering for BookWorks, sorting books and reading to kids.

A Helping Hand For more than 10 years, Debbie McGue has been Goodwill-Suncoast’s housing and corrections specialist. Prior to Goodwill she worked at USAA for 21 years. At Goodwill Debbie does a wide variety of administrative and auditing work for our five affordable housing communities, two corrections centers and three food service locations across our 10-county service area – phew! That’s a lot of work for one person, but she does it happily. Debbie also lends a helping hand at all Goodwill fundraisers, including the groovy Hippie Dash. “I love Goodwill, I love my job,” she says. “I love everyone here!” Debbie has three other big loves – her son, a USF graduate, her fabulous mother, and her rescue dog Honey, a miniature dachshund. Debra has a passion for animals, especially rescuing the elderly ones. It’s something she says she’ll continue to do. Honey was 10-years-old, extremely underweight with multiple issues, including a limp from a lodged bullet in her spine when she was brought to a shelter in another state. Debra adopted her from Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg. “She’s gained weight, her fur has all come back and she is the most loving little dog,” Debra says. In her free time, Debra loves spending time with family and friends – including Honey, of course!

GoodStuff Book Drive Begins! BookWorks Book Drive Feb. 1 - March 15 “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” We agree, Dr. Seuss! That’s why February kicks off our annual BookWorks book drive. If you live in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Marion, Sumter or Highlands counties, please consider donating new or like-new books for children. To donate books, attach a note indicating they are “For BookWorks” and drop them off at any Goodwill-Suncoast store or donation site. During the entire year, BookWorks volunteers read to thousands of kids from low-income families and then present them each with a personalized book to take home. To donate money so new books can be purchased, please visit generosity.com/education-fundraising/bookworks. Thank you to our book drive sponsors!

Jeans for Moms-to-Be Are you a mom-to-be in need of maternity jeans? Then bring your gently used maternity or non-maternity women’s clothing to A Pea in the Pod and you’ll get 25% off a pair of new maternity jeans. A Pea in the Pod will send your clothing donation to Goodwill, and you’ll be comfy and stylish! Our local A Pea in a Pod is at International Plaza in Tampa.

A Fair Deal Now through Feb. 20, anyone who donates at Goodwill-Suncoast stores or attended donation centers will receive a coupon good for $2 off an adult ticket to the Florida State Fair – Feb. 9-20. For each redeemed coupon, $1 will be donated to Goodwill. The discount applies to tickets sold at the fair admission gates, and may not be used for advanced ticket purchases.

Reduce Taxes, Increase Income! Consider a Goodwill Gift Annuity.

Give Back Box Do you have lots of empty shipping boxes left over after the holidays? Put them to Goodwill use! We’ve partnered with online retailers such as Amazon to offer an innovative idea called “Give Back Box.” Customers of Amazon and other online retailers can use those empty boxes to ship clothing and small household item donations directly to their local Goodwill. For shoppers, it’s as easy as packing donations in those empty shipping boxes and printing a label to ship them to the nearest Goodwill – for free! Visit www.GiveBackBox.com for more information or to print a label or two!

60 years or older? Invest in Goodwill for tax savings and lifetime income! When you make a gift of cash or stock into a Goodwill annuity, you receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction. You also receive guaranteed income for life, after which Goodwill uses the remaining principal for services to people who are disabled or disadvantaged.

GoodWorks A New,

CHANGED LIFE

Naomi’s life dramatically turned around while at Goodwill

Naomi is grateful to Goodwill's work release program, she is now working and reunited with her children.

Naomi was a young mother of five when her husband passed away unexpectedly. Soon after, her mother succumbed to cancer after a 19-year battle. In deep mourning and with five kids looking to her for direction, Naomi felt suddenly hopeless. She turned to drugs to numb her agony. That drug abuse eventually led to her arrest on a possession charge, and the arrest landed her in Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center’s ( TBCCC) workrelease program in St. Petersburg.

That’s where Naomi’s dramatic turnaround began. At TBCCC she attended substance abuse classes and was required to find a job. Working as a server at a local restaurant chain she was able to save $3,500 and send her daughter $450 for a prom dress – all while finishing out her prison sentence. Naomi has since completed her sentence, stayed employed, and is happily reunited with her five kids. “I have my whole life ahead of me,” she says. “I’ve stopped watching reruns and I’m on to the next season!”
