Goodwill-Suncoast 2024-25 Annual Report

Page 1

As we come together and reflect on the 2024–2025 fiscal year, there’s a sense of hope for the future we are building, together. Goodwill stood alongside more than 90,000 people, helping over 1,300 secure meaningful jobs—opening doors to stability, dignity, and possibility. Every job is more than a number; it’s a life rewritten

Thanks to your dedication, we funded more than 98% of those we served, creating an impact today towards a brighter tomorrow.

Our BookWorks program is a shining example: over 62,000 children received over 81,000 books, thanks to 347 volunteers who gave nearly 5,000 hours. Goodwill-Suncoast’s CORE Management Training participants were a part of the volunteer crew, sorting books and reading to children.

The future shines in our JAG program. Eighty-nine teens embraced service while building their college and scholarship opportunities—proof that tomorrow’s leaders are already here.

Job Connection Centers remain central to our mission, connecting 3,672 people with training and resources in 2024. With centers at 34th Street, Big Bend, Hillsborough, and a new site in Lakeland, our reach continues to grow.

In June, we gathered for our Annual Celebration of Learning, honoring more than 120 team members. From CORE Management graduates to team members earning retail certifications, each story reflected the power of learning to transform lives.

As we close this year, thank you for being the heartbeat of our mission. Yes, challenges remain—rising costs and growing needs—but with innovation and belief in people’s potential, we will help thousands more find their brightest futures.

OUR MISSION: Transforming lives through lifelong learning and the power of work while seeking ways to enhance our communities’ environmental resources.

Our mission services span employment services, training programs, and affordable housing. The sale of donated and new goods at our Goodwill stores enables us to offer a variety of employment and training services, promote self-sufficiency, and contribute to community conservation through recycling.

GROWING THROUGH RE-ENTRY AND BLOSSOMING IN BUSINESS.

Vonice Green | Small Business Owner, Horticulturist

Goodwill-Suncoast Re-entry Program

Vonice Green’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and transformation.

In 2011, she was sentenced to 15 years of incarceration, yet she remained committed to personal growth, completing her sentence without a single disciplinary infraction.

During her time incarcerated, Vonice discovered a passion for the green industry. She earned her Florida Nursery, Growers, and Landscape Association (FNGLA) Florida Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) credential—a milestone that fueled her ambition. Her dedication and discipline later led to a transfer to the GoodwillSuncoast Re-entry Center, where she gained valuable hands-on experience at American Plant Exchange.

Her strong work ethic and professionalism quickly earned the respect of those around her.

With the support of Goodwill’s re-entry initiatives and the Pathways Program, Vonice transformed her vision of business ownership into reality, officially launching North Florida Plant Nursery & Landscaping Design on August 18, 2024.

Within weeks, she secured her first major contract with O-Luxury Realty LLC, establishing herself as a rising entrepreneur in the industry. Her success is a powerful testament to the impact of second chances and the value of restorative programs that equip individuals to reintegrate successfully.

Vonice’s story underscores the importance of reentry support in reducing recidivism and fostering meaningful contributions to society. Through hope, hard work, and opportunity, she is proving that new beginnings are always possible.

DOING THE HEAVY LIFTING TO BUILD A BRIGHTER TOMORROW.

When Crystal first entered prison, she had no interest in change. Her only plan was to serve her time and get out. Growth and healing were the last things on her mind.

In 2020, Crystal transferred to Hernando Correctional Institution, with her only intent to be closer to her family and children. But the facility required participation in classes— anger management, parenting, journaling, and trauma programs, to name a few. The first two times she took the trauma course, nothing shifted. On her third attempt, however, something changed. With a clearer focus, she finally recognized the weight of her trauma and realized that healing was possible. For the first time,

she saw a brighter future for herself.

Crystal later moved to Lowell Correctional Institution’s work camp, where she learned about the Ashland University program offered at the annex. Determined to continue on her brighter path, she applied and was accepted, transferring there on November 22, 2022. By January 2023, she had begun her college courses.

At the same time, the Florida Foundation for Correctional Education was partnering with the Department of Corrections to launch a Heavy Equipment program. Crystal was selected to join as an aide and soon became a full-time college student. Her persistence paid off—in

August 2024, she graduated with an Associate’s degree. Shortly after, she came to Suncoast, taking the next big step into her new life.

Today, Crystal is determined to build a long-term career. Her goals are to continue her education, pursue her Bachelor’s degree, and integrate her studies into the construction industry.

Crystal’s story is a testament to determination and possibility. For those who knew her before prison, she is living proof that even from the darkest places, transformation is possible and a brighter tomorrow can be built.

Our Celebration of Learning Luncheon was, once again, a huge success! It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the hard work, perseverance, and dedication of our lifelong learners. Their efforts have truly paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of their incredible achievements!

OUR YEAR AT A GLANCE

At this year’s 20th Dell Connect Conference, Goodwill-Suncoast was awarded a $5,000 scholarship, which will be used to support mission services that benefit our local communities.

The Risk Management Team has introduced the exciting new Flex and Stretch Program! They’re reminding us that taking just a quick stretch in the morning, mid-morning, and afternoon can do wonders. Not only does it ease muscle tension and help prevent injuries, but it also gives your focus (and mood!) a big boost. Let’s keep stretching, stay energized, and keep the good vibes going!

The 9th annual Hippie Dash at Safety Harbor’s Waterfront Park brought together 1,392 participants— and plenty of Goodwill staff—for a far-out day of running, walking, and good vibes. The event featured free food, live music from School of Rock, and groovy contests!

Project SEARCH students proudly completed their immersive internship with AdventHealth! These graduates not only gained valuable handson experience, but also developed strong professional habits and the confidence to shine in a variety of roles.

We’re introducing Virtual Reality (VR) into our workforce development programs! This cuttingedge technology will enhance the experiences for participants to engage, learn, and grow.

Goodwill’s JET Career Camp is soaring! Our classroom at the World Equestrian Center is giving students valuable insights and hands-on experience that are both inspiring and empowering. The energy and enthusiasm shared during this camp have been truly remarkable!

Goodwill-Suncoast and Hillsborough County Solid Waste have been named 2024 Recycling Champions by the Florida Recycling Partnership Foundation, with awards presented at USF’s Patel College of Global Sustainability in November.

We have expanded our sustainability efforts beyond recycled socks to include recycling single-use plastic bags through a partnership with TREX, as well as eliminating plastic bags in our stores.

We proudly encourage lifelong learning, empowering team members to grow their careers. By investing in personal and professional development, we help them discover new opportunities, build confidence, and achieve success.

Representatives from the nine Florida Goodwill Associations came together in Tallahassee to meet with government officials and proudly share powerful outcomes. Among the highlights: 1 in 24 people placed in a job had a direct connection to Goodwill! This remarkable impact showcases the life-changing role Goodwill plays in helping Floridians build brighter futures.

Every seat at our donor luncheon represented hope, impact, and transformative potential. We are humbled by your incredible support!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Destin Murray: A brighter tomorrow

Goodwill-Suncoast/Project SEARCH

Destin is a kind, hardworking young man whose proud and supportive family has cheered him on every step of the way. As a young adult on the autism spectrum, he once found workplace social interactions challenging—often struggling to connect or respond to greetings. With encouragement from his Project SEARCH coach and team, Destin learned to recognize social cues, build confidence, and develop valuable professional skills.

During the 2024–2025 school year, Destin completed three internship

rotations in plant operations, maintenance, and groundskeeping at the host site, Pinellas County Schools Administration Building. A proud Countryside High School graduate, he had a clear goal from the start: to become a plant operator for the district—ideally at his alma mater.

Through focus, professionalism, and determination, Destin achieved that goal! In March 2025, during his third rotation, he interviewed for a Plant Operator position at Countryside High School—and was offered the job on the spot. Since then,

he has become an indispensable member of the team, admired by his supervisors—several of whom attended his Project SEARCH graduation in May. His mother’s role as a guest speaker added a special personal touch to the ceremony.

Destin approaches every task with enthusiasm and is supported by a loving family that has celebrated each milestone along the way.

His journey is a powerful testament to the impact of hard work, clear goals, and strong support. Destin’s success highlights his perseverance and the commitment of Countryside High School—and the host site—to uplifting Project SEARCH interns.
