BOOT TRENDS FALL 2012 by RACHEL JENSEN of DA PAURA BLOG www.capturingitaly.blogspot.com

After living in Rome for 2 years, I quickly learned the utmost importance to own many types of boots for city life essentials. My obsession didn’t stop there, and if you are like me, you might agree that one of the most exciting aspects of the upcoming Fall season is boots! After attending the runway show at Neiman Marcus Fashion Valley Mall for Fashion’s Night Out earlier in the month, I was inspired to take notes on the boot trends that will soon be flooding our closets (if they haven’t yet already) this Fall 2012. I would say booties are really the explosive boot style right now, but such great variations are available to us now... among other great boot heights as well. Here is my own personal take and some of the fabulous boot trends this season.

As if we are channeling the Victorian Era, boots will be laced up with the fiercest modern edge. The likes of Burberry, Giuseppe Zanotti, Manolo Blahnik, and Sam Edelman are among the trendsetters here. To take laces to a completely different extreme, we will see sporty looks also taking to this trend. Wedge sneakers have been popping up everywhere, giving the look of “comfort” a fashionable makeover. Shearling. Yes, once again we love our shearling for Fall/Winter. Comfort, warmth, and style are intertwined to give us the most perfect stylish walking boots. Rachel Zoe and Burberry have some amazing Shearling boots at the moment.

Tassles. Tassled/loafer booties are one of my personal favorites for Fall. Among the trendsetters are Coach and VANELi. We have taken the menswear-inspired Buckles. Buckles are always chic for boots, but lately I have observed an Equestrend and applied it to the boot world. The result? Amazing collegiate-style trian appeal to the style of many of the buckles. Back to the preppy elements we kicks for the ultimate preppy look. previously discussed, a collegiate and posh tone is added to boots this season. YSL, Sam Edelman, and Michael Kors have some amazing buckled boots right Spikes/Studs. We are all obsessed with edge right now, especially in jewelry. now. You will see that this trend is now taking the boot world by storm as well. Everything from biker-inspired flat boots to elegant booties will be adorned with I hope you have enjoyed my take on the quickly approaching boot season, and spikes and studs this Fall. Matiko, Topshop, Valentino and Stuart Weitzman happy shopping! have contributed to this trend recently. Images by Rachel Jensen of Da Paura & Paulina Mo of Lil’ Bits of Chic. Lace-up. We are taking the shoe-lace concept to a whole new level this year.

what’s best for

your breasts?

by: Alejandrina Aragon

www.theGOODSmagonline.com • October 2012 | L#

As breast cancer awareness month fast approaches I would love to share some educational information on a subject that is very close to home. I myself had my first brush with breast health issues at the very young age of 22 years old with a history of breast cancer in the family with my mother having been diagnosed at approx. 32 years of age. Since then the need for monitoring these health concerns have increased and now at the age of 31 I am required to have mammograms and breast ultrasounds every six months. It is extremely important for all us to be educated in the fact that breast cancer does not discriminate against age, sex, race or genetics. Those who have a family history can definitely have higher risk factors and should start early screening if there is a history of breast cancer within their immediate family. Therefor it’s a necessity that we are properly informed and aware of the risk factors and preventative measures. Early screening is a must since it can be a lifesaver. As we all know being proactive can never hurt when it comes to our health and early detection is the best medicine. Preventative measures can expand farther that most think. We can help lower our chances by being aware of the risk factors and using diet as a stepping stone since several foods containing antioxidants and phytochemicals have been proven to decrease the risk of breast cancer, by working to destroy precancerous cells. Each year in the US

approx. 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and out of that about 40,000 loose the battle to cancer. As I said before breast cancer is not bias so unfortunately a disease thought to mostly affect woman has also been known to affect approx. 1,700 men in the US alone a year and out of that about 450 of them will loose the battle cancer as well. Pre-menopausal women who consume a minimum of 20 g of dietary fiber a day are at lower risk of being affected by breast cancer. Combining your oatmeal with blueberries and or any other fruit high in antioxidants and you not only lower your risk further, but your able to enjoy something delicious and healthy with a great benefit. Special nutrients in Green Tea called Catechins can kill harmful breast cancer cells and it has been suggested that women 50 and under who consume 3 cups a day are at a lower risk. There have been claims that lycopene, an antioxidant only found in tomatoes, are a risk reducer as well. Ketchup is known to contain a more readily available source this antioxidant. However lets not let those numbers sway us from becoming educated in prevention and keep us from becoming a part of these statistics. It is important to take into account breast cancer is terminal however it is not a death sentence since early detection and screening is available. To better understand the importance I would like to share some of the most common risk factors to be aware of. Risk factors for

tency. In more severe cases there have also been documented changes in the size of the breast or breasts. Not all of these indicators may result in a positive cancer diagnosis but it is important to get immediate medical attention if you are experiencing any of these symptoms as a preventative measure in maintaining and becoming self educated about your health. Breast Cancer is most definitely a touchy, scary and uncomfortable subject but those who experience the diagnosis itself can probably tell you that the fear of the possibility of diagnosis is far surpassed by the actual diagnosis itself. Therefor we must embrace the subject, become informed and practice early prevention and detection with a positive mentality, strength and persistence. Always know that there are support systems out there and great ways we can educate ourselves. The American Cancer Society has a wealth of information on breast cancer ranging from symptoms, prevention, diagnosis, financial assistance and more. I would also like to share a few other websites with you including: http://abcf.org, http://ww5.komen.org and http://www.cancer.org/ cancer/breastcancer/. These sites have been very informative and have helped me better understand, educate and prepare myself for the breast health concerns I am currently facing and I am confident they can do the same for anyone who is currently facing breast cancer.

beast cancer include but are not limited to age, weight, diet and life style choices, menstrual and reproductive history, family and personal history, medical and other risks factors can also vary of a case-by-case diagnosis. We must all practice early detection including preforming breast self exams at the age of 20 to seek any signs of abnormality or change. Between the ages of 20-29 it is recommended to receive clinical breast exams once every three years. By 40 it is most beneficial to receive a clinical exam in conjunction with a mammogram annually and between 40-49 once to twice a year varying on previous findings. If there is a history within the immediate family of breast cancer it is important to start pre screening and early detection 10 years prior to the age of diagnosis of the person affected with breast cancer. Typically breast cancer does not cause initial pain so diagnosis can be tricky if we are not aware what to look for before it’s too late. Breast cancer symptoms vary and include a change in the appearance and feel of the breast tissue and or nipple. Some may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in the breast or near the underarm region. There are also patients who may experience changes in the shape of the areola and or inversion of the nipple, a sagging or puckered breast, scaly, red and swollen breast skin, areola or nipple and in some cases nipple discharge which may have a cloudy or bloody consis-

the grey

by brittany marie

we

all hope that the person we are dating is as equally enamored with us and ready for that next phase of commitment that we are, but sometimes the only choice other than grey is nothing. We have heard rumors about the grey… that kind of relationship where you aren’t in an exclusive relationship but you are definitely more than friends, at least you think so. How can you tell that you are in the grey? The “light” version can be you two talking more than just casually a few times a day maybe even had a semi-good romp in the bedroom a time or two but never seem to really do anything that normal people would who are trying to move towards a couple. A darker version would be the ones of you who do hang out, are very close, what goes on behind closed doors is bigger than the physical high you both get and yet neither of you can pull the trigger and take that next step. The way you feel about each other when you guys are together varies from perfect to you questioning if the small bit off happiness your feeling is ever going to be permanent. As much as you try to block out what you are feeling the anxiety and the questions you can’t drown them out. Then one day the damn breaks and all of the anxiety and feelings come out it’s either a fight ends hat ever quasi relationship you have or it’s that mythic breaking point that gets you the relationship you always wanted. Let’s be very clear the later rarely happens. The grey is a dangerous place to be because it is a breeding ground for comfort. Your body is comfortable with the feel of your partner’s skin against it and you’re addicted to each other’s hormones more than any crack head is to crack. Those of you in a grey relationship are faced with the high you get and the void that person fills in your life but just as with any other drug it only temporarily fixes the problem. Normally one person is working towards commitment and the other is too addicted

to the status quo to want anything different. One person’s motivation to keep trying is the other’s motivation to keep things the same. The grim reality is that the person pushing for the status quo normally is very much aware of the situation and is even more aware that their “partner” isn’t what they want. They understand their “partner” is so high on sex and the thought of a relationship they haven’t seen that the pursuit has already begun for a person who they really want to be with. No ladies this isn’t always a man doing this type of dirty work we do it too because we don’t want to hurt anyone and prefer to let them down easy. Make no mistake no matter how wet you are ladies or how big and well you put it down fellas sex tricks won’t move you outta the grey. You have to make the hard choice to walk out of it yourself or hope that either the other person wants out like you or wants to make it official like you do. If you stay sure the sex may stay good for a while but trust me even after a while that will lose its effect and allure. I know that most of you were looking for this column to give you advice about how to move from grey to beautiful Technicolor but I wouldn’t know how to do that. The hard truth of the matter is that whatever cosmic forces that dictate the world are in control of that. What I can tell you is that you need to trust your instincts that talk to you in that small quiet calm voice that is telling you to walk away to something better. Yes it’s going to be difficult because part if not all of your heart is in it to try to make things official but if that’s all that you see you risk losing yourself to something that doesn’t even want you. This column isn’t just about relationships and sex it’s about being able to deal with yourself naked physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The GOODS Celebrity Fashion Column by kimberly kimmel Welcome back to our celebrity fashion column. A lot of things are going on in the world of fashion and celebrities, especially with last month’s fashion week. Here are some new and exciting fashion trends, products and of course, celebrity gossip. Who’s Out and About? We’ve all seen Amanda Bynes out and about, but now it’s getting scary. While we love spotting celebs in their cars, this is one we’d prefer to see out from behind the wheel. How many hit and run altercations can one person have? Apparently there is further altercation, this time with a photographer. And luckily for the photographer, she was walking. And, how DOES she look so good, while behaving so badly? Amanda, wearing posh sunglasses and a leather jacket looked ‘too cool for school’ as she seemingly threatened a photographer while outside a Mexican restaurant on Sunset. She was seen grabbing his camera and allegedly dug her fingernails into his skin. OUCH. Who could work converse tennis shoes, striped shorts, and an ultra-short do and still look gorgeous? Only Rihanna! She was spotted at The Grove chatting with a friend. She has just received six MTV European Music Award nominations and her demeanor in her casual outfit was kick-back. You are always cool, Rihanna!

What’s In, What’s Out Messy hair was in for a while. Looking like you just climbed out of bed is often fun and flirtatious at home, but if you are going to go out on the town, leave the messy look behind- right along with that black roots thing. A classier, more polished look is in. No more just throwing up your hair, tying it back and stepping out. If you want a fun, fast, yet pulled together look, the pony tail is quick, easy and fun. A popular look on the runway, the pony tail is sleek, shiny, and slick. In fact, the pony-tail can look so polished, you can go anywhere with this sleek style.

Upcoming Trends A fun trend this fall is the “Bootie.” Models on the runway during New York fashion week were sporting this fun boot which rises just up to the ankle. Booties can go with anything in your wardrobe including pants, dresses or minis. Boots of all types are always in style and these are just plain fun to wear and be seen in. Cool Places to Shop It’s old news that Miley Cyrus went shopping at American Apparel, but we’ve found a lot of celebs seem to find it their favorite place to shop. Stephanie Pratt was also seen there, recently buying metallic liquid leggings and then carrying her haul out to her car. Our fave product of the month Maybelline debuted their Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eye shadow which is their longest lasting eye shadow. As a cream, gel based formula, they claim the product will last 24 hours. A great idea for hitting the town for an all-nighter. Krysten Ritter (Confessions of a Shopaholic) has been looking oh, so cool wearing the product for ads.

handbags

MUST HAVE FALL

By Kimberly Kimmel Everyone has their favorite, can’t live without handbag. The easy to carry shoulder bag you use for going shopping or to the movies, the fancy evening clutch saved for special occasions, or the breezy summer tote you take to the beach. Over the last several decades handbag trends have come and gone. But everyone has their favorite type of bag- favorite size, color, design and designer. But which are the must have handbags you need to have in your closet to handle each and any occasion? Over the years, when a situation presents itself, there have been a few classic choices that always match the occasion. When the trends have come and gone, we’ve chosen the five basic tried and true bags that will see you through. For a classic, every day, yet sophisticated bag, the Chanel quilted 2.55 has been many a woman’s choice for decades. This classic bag has been a favorite since Coco Chanel came out with its unique quilted design in February 1955 (hence the numbers 2.55). For a fashionable choice, you can never go wrong with a Chanel. She designed this bag with her upbringing in mind. Living at an orphanage, she used the double chains to represent the key chains the orphanage caretakers had. Also, the inside red color is the same as the orphan-

age guard’s uniforms. The bag goes with anything in your wardrobewhether out to lunch with friends, or out for an evening at the fanciest restaurant. Chanel is so chic, it can never disappoint.

casual, yet sophisticated lunch. Just like the basic black dress, a black envelope clutch has been a wardrobe staple for decades and Kors gives this style a trendy elegance.

In everyone’s closet is the standard white summer tote. Try the Neiman Marcus Colorblock North-South Tote. This tote is perfect for carrying work related materials, for going to the park, the beach, or running around town on a hot summer day.

And last but not least, for hitting the Oscars, or any ultra-fancy occasion, you’ll need the Jessica McClintock Pleated Bow Satin Clutch. Small clutches are a lot of fun and come in tons of designs. Can we not forget the Empire State Building bag that Sarah Jessica Parker sported in the Sex and the City movie? Or the small telephone clutches that were popular on the red carpet for a while. Whether beaded, patent leather or made of rhinestone, you can choose one that fits your personality and ensemble.

For a smaller tote bag, the Gucci Classic Tote is a perfect choice. For a quick run to the store, going to an afternoon movie, or shopping, this is a simple, yet high fashion bag to hold your essentials and see you through any daily situation. The Gucci is so stylish it goes with any wardrobe- sporty or more upscale. And, if you can’t afford the Gucci, there are plenty of “knock offs” to choose from. For an evening bag, the Michael Kors Leather Envelope Clutch will fill the bill. This classic bag can be used as an evening bag, or for the

Armed with these basic bags in your closet you’ll be ready and fashionable for hitting the beach or the red carpet. And remember, there are a ton of “look alikes” on the market to fit your budget.

q&a

R.C. - Before we talk about your company Eric, Pardon My French, tell me a little bit about yourself and how you got your start in the world of entertainment/art? E.F. - I’ve been a professional ballroom/latin dancer & competitor for over 25 years so art has been in my life for a long time. Lindsey, my wife and partner in Pardon My French is an interior designer and has always had an affinity for the arts and also used to run Rockit, a rock music event company. We both enjoy creating inspirating spaces for people to enjoy their surroundings R.C. - What inspired you to create your own company? What are some of the specific aspects that your business specializes in? E.F. - Pardon My French was hatched while on the volunteer committee to plan the annual gala for the San Diego Fine Art Society when we realized we had a knack for hosting events relating to fine arts. Basically we think of it as ‘bring art to the people’ rather than going to a gallery, we show the art in a fresh, upbeat social venue, a different one each time.

R.C. - I can see that you have had couple nightlife venues that are focused on artwork and ARTS, tell me more about it. E.F. - We’ve always wanted to have a fundraising aspect to our events but couldn’t quite find the right fit until we found ARTS. We are so happy to work with such a wonderful group and we hope to, one day soon, raise enough money for them to have a positive impact on children’s lives. A Reason To Survive (ARTS) is a San Diego based nonprofit organization that believes that the visual, performing, and literary arts can literally transform lives – especially those of kids. They believe in the therapeutic powers of the arts, but we are not clinical art therapists. They use all art forms as a vehicle to create positive, long-lasting change in children and youth facing major life challenges – giving them not only a reason to survive – but to also thrive. Their unique program framework and model creates a one-stop shop for kids to be exposed to and engage in the arts at many levels depending on their circumstances, skill level, and interest. It is their goal to bring the ARTS to Heal, Inspire, and Empower children who are suffering throughout San Diego.

R.C. - Which has been your favorite event? Which has been the most challenging? E.F. - Our favorite event was the after party for the Art San Diego 2012 Contemporary Art Fair, which was also our most challenging. It was on the picturesque rooftop of the W Hotel and featured the work of San Diego’s own rising star, Celestine, who also happens to be a dear friend. Young artists from ARTS also featured their work, in which 3 pieces were sold and 100% of the proceeds going directly back to those artists. Celestine also sold a painting and donated a portion to ARTS as well. The event was wonderfully successful; we had many new attendees who were not aware of Pardon My French or ARTS venues.

R.C. - How can people get connected with your company? E.F. - The best way is our website where you can sign up for our email list (we send very few emails) and get the latest updates and of course, on Facebook: facebook.com/pardonmyfrenchsd

R.C. - Thank you for your time Eric, until your next art event, is there anything else you would like to share with the readers to look out for? E.F. - Funny you should mention that, we are now engaged with one of San Diego’s top public relations firm, Jacob Tyler. We have some amazing changes in the works that we’ll be announcing soon, 2013 will be a big year for Pardon My French. We are also taking our events on the road, our first event outside of San Diego is schedule for the month of November R.C. - Who are the members of Pardon My French that make your com- in Los Angeles. pany a success? ask Sol & Row

Q: Long Distance Relationships?

Sol. - This can be VERY subjective Long distance relationships are setting up most couples to FAIL, there are exceptions to this rule of course as there are to most; but for most people who aren’t married I would suggest relocating to make that relationship work.

Row. – Anything that involves spatial distance and time is always challenging. Couples are not meant to be physically separated

Q: Who should say I love you first? Sol. - Whoever means it first. That advice however comes with a warning: I don’t think guys should jump the gun to say those three very little but very potent words unless they feel some sort of mutual feeling.

Row. – It’s a tough one, but most of the time, we will cave in and say it first. If you don’t mean it then don’t say it. Of course we want to hear those three little words but please don’t play with our emotions.

Q: Is chivalry dead? Sol. - No, there are still a few of us chivalrous gentlemen out there.

Row. – Chivalry can be categorized as part of endangered species! Rare is the occurrence of encountering a gentleman that is courteous, such as opening the door (any kind of door) for his lady. Usually we get the chair at dinner, or the elevator ride… Gentlemen, be chivalrous every day, not only for special occasions.

Q: What is your ideal first date? Sol. - My ideal first date would be a nice quiet dinner at a restaurant that has an intimate setting followed by something fun or interactive like bowling, miniature golf, or a place with good dance music and a bar…very cliché but more interesting when getting to know someone than holding hands in the dark at a movie, which is more of a second or third date anyways. There are special occasions where a few more stops are pulled out…

Row. –A boot camp class or an outdoor activity… some sort of physical activity that involves eye and hand coordination. I am not a girly girl, I want to know what my date is made off. I want to be able to share activities with him. Then afterwards we would go for lunch followed by a smoothie or a coffee drink. There will be plenty of other occasions to be treated for a nice romantic dinner and let my date sweep me off my feet.

Q: How many dates before you go in for the kiss? Sol. - Hmmm, kiss on the first date, very subjective. Kind of depends on the vibe that I’m receiving; women don’t all walk and talk alike. Yes and no.

Row. – Definitely not on the first date, it sends the wrong message. I don’t think there is a trial period for when you get kissed but if it feels right, then the kiss will be very memorable.

Q: How much PDA is acceptable? Sol. - I live in the moment, a little PDA is acceptable; it certainly depends on the public setting that I am in. I don’t want to be responsible for giving a stranger’s children an advanced education on the birds and the bees; on the other hand people should be allowed to express themselves if they feel the need to.

Row. – PDA is necessary and acceptable at any time. But don’t use and abuse of it just, keep it meaningful. When you start dating, the hand holding/brushing is always appreciated. A little attention here and there… But don’t overwhelm your date with PDA as a mean to mark your territory.

Q: “Hey I just met you” would you rather text or call…me maybe? Sol. - I’m old fashioned; call me…text messages can be misinterpreted. Text messages can be good if used to say “hey” or the occasional flirting, but if I’m going to have a conversation or I’m in the “getting to know you” phase of a relationship, then I’d rather use my words and not my thumbs to communicate what is on my mind.

Row. – I would wait a little and see who will make the first approach. If that person is interested in getting to know you, they will make the first attempt. I don’t mind text messages only if we agree to meet and talk and get to know each other. I will not flirt with you over text messages; it’s getting lost in translation! The awkward pause over the phone is the perfect sign that there will be no first date.

October Movie Preview by Russell Davis Taken Taken might not be a horror film but it’s a sure thrill ride. In the first film we saw Liam Nelson’s character, Bryan Mills, search high and low for his daughter when she was kidnapped and almost sold into prostitution. The first film showed what a father would do to save his own flesh and blood. In this sequel his wife Lenore, played by Famke Janssen, is the one taken when she and her daughter take a vacation together. This time it’s about revenge. They want to see Bryan suffer for the damages he delivered while trying to find his daughter in the first film. The stakes are higher in this sequel and it looks like Bryan’s troubles will never end. The film opens October 5th. www.theGOODSmagonline.com • October 2012 | L#

FrankenWeenie Also opening on the same weekend is FrankenWeenie. This film is a homage to Frankenstein for the children. It is directed by Tim Burton and written by John August. Despite being advertised as a children’s film it possesses some material that may be too creepy for children (The dog literally starts to fall apart). The main character Victor is searching for a way to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life. Victor turns to his passion for horror movies for inspiration and is successful in his experiment to bring Sparky back to life. There’s a little problem though. The rest of the neighborhood believes the dog is an abomination and needs to be destroyed. Can Victor prove that Sparky is the same dog like before or will his neighbors put Sparky in the ground for good?

V/H/S Critics have been saying time and time again that it’s the best horror movie in years. It literally made people vomit or pass out in the theater. It features seven directors telling 6 gruesome stories of the supernatural. The first story features a group of college boys looking for a night of drunken fun and sex. They encounter a strange woman that’s looking for a little fun of her own. A married couple taking their second honeymoon encounters another strange woman who seems to be stalking them. In this story nothing is as it seems. The third story is a young girl living in a haunted apartment. She has yet to realize that’s the least of her problems. The fourth and fifth story features a story of revenge and a Halloween party turning into a real life horror movie. The 6th film is the tie in and features degenerates breaking into a house to steal the tapes. They find a dead body sitting in a chair with the TV on and a few VCRs connected. The boys have very little idea that they are also part of the collection. Each story is scarier than the last and this film is a must see this October. The film opens in limited release October 5th.

Sinister This film stars Ethan Hawke as Ellison. He is a writer looking for inspiration for his next book. He moves his family into a new home where a family was murdered. While searching his new grounds he finds old films of the family. While watching them he witnesses first-hand what evil truly looks like. He mistakenly unleashes an evil entity that is not only going after his family but wants to eat the soul of his daughter. Can Ellison save his family before this evil entity takes complete control of them? The tag line reads “Once you see him, nothing can save you.” Let’s find out on October 12th.

Paranormal Activity

Silent Hill It’s been six years since the first Silent Hill film hit theaters. This is a direct sequel to the first film featuring the original characters. After the events of the first film Chris, played by Sean Bean, keeps moving his daughter Heather, played by Adelaide Clemens, from town to town. They are trying to escape the evil entity that possesses the town of Silent Hill. Once her father is kidnapped she has no choice but to follow the clues back to her original home. There she finds the answers that she seeks and horrors that she will never forget. She also encounters her mother, played by Radha Mitchell, who is still lost in the other dimension. Can Heather save herself and her family or will Silent Hill reclaim them for good? The movie opens on October 26th. Hope to see you at the movies!

This is the fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise. The good news is that it picks up where the second film left off. Alice, played by Kathryn Newton, believes something weird is going on at her neighbor’s house. She begins filming the home and notices strange things about the young boy. Soon a strange phenomenon begins happening at her home. It seems the neighbors don’t like to be spied on. Everything that you watched in the series has led to this. The film features a dramatic ending that may satisfy horror lovers. The film opens October 19th.
