******************************************* Johnny, a 16-year-old boy, was out late with friends one night. Suddenly he realized it was Father’s Day and he had neglected to buy a card for his dad. After much searching, Johnny located an open store, but was disappointed to find only two cards left on a picked-over rack. Selecting one, he brought it home and, somewhat sheepishly, presented it to his father. Upon opening it, Dad read the message: “You’ve been like a father to me.” He looked at Johnny, puzzled. “Well, Dad,” Johnny tried to explain, “It was either that or the card that said, ‘Now that I’m a father too!’”

Dear Battle of the Sexes: My wife needs to hire a pool boy, because I quit! I hate everything about owning a pool, and I despise opening it up for the summer. I wouldn’t mind it so much if she would help me out a little bit, but she doesn’t - she just whines and complains that it needs to be done and then complains that I don’t do it fast enough or good enough. So, this year, I am having her hire a pool professional - it was my Mother’s Day gift to her. I think this will be a much better summer! - Retired Pool Boy Dear Battle of the Sexes: I wanted to complain about something that really irritates me about my husband, but I am going to refrain from doing so. You know why? I have just finally realized that life is way too short to constantly complain about the little things. You never know when your life on this earth will be over. So, on that solemn note -- I will be focusing on nothing but the good things in my life and hope others can do so, too! Enjoy your family and friends - make every minute count!! - Feeling Philosophical, Lock Haven Send your responses to these letters, or mail in your own gripes to: “Good News” P.O. By Pastor T.R. Hardic of the McElhattan and Caldwell United Methodist Churches Summertime refreshment

Man, it seems as if it has been a long time since last summer, but with Prom season and graduations happening all around us, the leaves popping, and the smell of freshly mown lawns, we are assured that summertime is upon us. When my sons were little they just couldn’t wait for a good summertime rain, because rain meant puddles and puddles meant splashing and fun. My wife and I just returned from the beach, ah, the sun, the water, and the sound of the waves landing on the beach. Trout season has meant fishing people of all ages have flocked to stream sides and enjoyed hours of listening to babbling brooks and the excitement of landing a big one. What do all these things have in common? Water, of course. Water has been the foundation of life itself even from the beginning of time. The book of Genesis tells us that God’s spirit hovered above the water, and out of chaos, brought order. In the Gospel, according to John chapter 1 verse 26, we read of John, an eccentric preacher, who taught of repentance and baptism with water, but foretold of one whom would baptize with the Holy Spirit. That one to come was Jesus. In that same Gospel in chapter 4, verses 1 through 15, Jesus would have an encounter with a woman at a well in what would be considered the bad part of town, and tell her that all who drink of the water from the well would be thirsty again, but all who would ask Jesus for the living water he offered, would never thirst again. Summertime, what a time to enjoy the wonders and beauty of God’s creation, but mud puddles dry up in time, we have to leave the beach and trout season soon ends, but the good news is that the life giving water that Jesus offers is totally fulfilling, totally satisfying, is free to all who would ask and never dries up. Summertime is not only a great time to seek out the fun, but also a great time to seek out what God has to offer to each one of us, water when we drink of it we will never be thirsty again. Happy summer. Come join us in worship. Thursday evenings at 7 pm at McElhattan UMC for a contemporary service, or Sunday mornings at 7:30 am at Caldwell UMC on Coudersport Pike, and 10:30 am at McElhattan UMC, 502 McElhattan Drive. Have and great summer and be filled with living water. In Christ Service - Pastor T.R.

Can We Join Your Family?

Children Waiting For A Home...

Kevin, 14, loves many sports, but his favorite is basketball, and he dreams of playing the game professionally when he grows up. However, if that doesn’t work out, he is considering becoming a lawyer. Kevin also enjoys a variety of music styles, including jazz, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. In his spare time, he likes to read and he spends many happy hours absorbed in a good book. Enrolled in the ninth grade, Kevin benefits from special education services. He is a good student and is proud that he received all A’s in the last marking period. Math is his favorite subject. Kevin yearns to be adopted and have a permanent home. He would thrive with a patient, loving, supportive family that will help him reach his potential. He is close to his siblings and they should remain in touch.

Kevin

Makayla, 13, loves stuffed animals and talks to them in a playful way. Makayla enjoys reading, especially non-fiction books. She has a vivid imagination and spends many happy hours creating her own stories, which she likes to share with others. Makayla makes friends easily and is able to develop long, loving relationships. She is well liked by her peers, teachers, classmates, and the staff in her foster care facility. Makayla has experienced much trauma and many losses and separations in her young life, and longs to have a permanent home. She would thrive in a home with a mom and a dad who would be patient and loving and provide a stable, consistent environment for her. She looks forward to the day that she can share with a forever family the stories she writes.

Natasha

Makayla

Natasha is a sociable, active, and curious 13 year old who enjoys being around people and receiving a lot of attention. Very affectionate, she delights in giving hugs and kisses. She also enjoys being tickled and spending time with the staff in her foster care facility. Diagnosed with autism, Natasha receives special education services and has made significant progress in the past few years. Music is her favorite class in school, where she is able to use the instruments. Natasha can walk and run without assistance. She communicates her needs and desires through sign language, gestures, and some words. Natasha is developing self-care skills. She needs a loving, patient, and committed forever family to help her reach her full potential.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

National Adoption Center • 1500 Walnut Street, Suite 701 • Philadelphia, PA 19102 1-800-TO-ADOPT www.adopt.org The National Adoption Center is a private, non-profit organization that expands adoption opportunities for children throughout the United States, particularly for children with special needs and those from minority cultures.

Bear Country’s #1 Teachers are...

Wow...this was a two-way tie, and it was tough choosing just two from our great entries! The winners are Mr. Tyler Barth of Liberty-Curtin Elementary in Blanchard, and Mrs. Sheena Armbruster of Walnut Street Christian School in Avis. They both win a $25 Gift Card from The Bus Stops Here in Lock Haven, and a frozen cake from Avis Dairy Queen! Our writers, Jennifer Yerke and Dylan Lundy, win a free pizza from Pizza City in Lock Haven, and a box of Dilly Bars from Avis Dairy Queen.

Thanks to every one who participated! It was great reading all your touching letters!

Jennifer Yerke’s winning letter, nominating Mr. Barth:

Dylan Lundy’s winning letter, nominating Mrs. Armbruster:

“I would like to nominate Mr. Barth as the best teacher in Bear Country. In his class this year, he has two students I know of that went through catastrophic changes, one being a fire, where a student lost everything. He and the staff at Liberty Curtin Elementary School, located in a small town named Blanchard, put together a fundraiser to help the family and little student in his class help recover some of what they lost. I cannot speak for that family, however, if it was my family, there would not be enough gratitude to show Mr. Barth. Also, my daughter is a 7 year old girl in Mr. Barth’s class. Her father had a major stroke and almost died, now lives his life in a nursing home. Through this, Mr. Barth took a personal interest in my daughter. He made sure she was doing well physically, mentally, and academically. He refers to her as “one of his.” He even went as far as to do testing he did not have to, to be sure that she wasn’t showing any academic stress due to all of the new changes in her life. As the parent, he was there to talk to and I never felt more at ease in a time of trouble to drop my child off at school. Mr. Barth has a unique way of teaching. All his students love him. He is a teacher HERO, and I nominate Mr. Barth on behalf of my daugther, Erika Yerke, and myself. Please help us show Mr. Barth how much his hard work and empathy makes a difference in all of his students.”

“I believe that my teacher, Mrs. Armbruster, is the best teacher in Bear Country, because of the wonderful Christ-like example she is in the classroom, and also in her life. First of all, the example she shows while teaching is so encouraging. Whether she is giggling while she tells us about her day, or sternly giving correction, her grace and mercy are shown. She is wonderful at answering any math-related question that we might have during class or on our homework. (And we certainly do have a lot!) Also, her clear organization and responsibility in her classroom is very motivating. Seeing her keep organized makes me want to more and more. Secondly, her example outside of the classroom is one of joy and respect. Although I may not attend the same Church as her, I have heard from those that do that she is very involved and helpful. The testimonies from these people make me happy to know that my teacher shows the same traits outside of school that I see in her inside of school. In conclusion, the best teacher in Bear Country is Mrs. Armbruster because she shows wonderful character traits at school and at church. Cany you think of someone just like Mrs. A? I bet not, because she is certainly one of a kind!”

Central Mountain Wildcat football news:

The Central Mountain Wildcat Football Team will be starting an annual tradition by attending a team camp at Gettysburg College July 8-11. This camp is facilitated by college coaches and will allow for positive exposure for the student athletes to various Universities. Players will be instructed by several renounced experts in the wing, compete against quality competition from schools located in PA, MD, DE, and WV, and have the opportunity to experience college life by using the first class facilities at the school. This team camp is for rising 10th through 12th graders. Many players have already registered, and the coaching staff is expecting a large turnout. Any player interested in attending the camp should contact Coach Nines as soon as possible. For more info, email Coach Michael Nines at: mnines@kcsd.us

Wildcat of the Month:

June’s Wildcat of the Month is Loc Long. Loc will be a senior and is a three sport varsity athlete. Loc continues to work out during each athletic season and has just qualified for States in the Discus by winning Districts. During all of these time commitments and difficult scheduling, Loc still manages to attend voluntary football workouts. Loc is a 3 time varsity letter winner for the Football Program and we have high expectations for him this upcoming year. Loc has demonstrated hard work and dedication by learning two new football positions and still competing at a very high level in his spring sport. We admire his hard work and dedication to the school and are very proud that he has a 3.4 GPA. Loc is a natural leader and will do great things on the football field next season.

SPOTLIGHT ON a local business success story!

Beckoning Cat Project 1417 East Third Street Williamsport, PA A recently opened low cost, high quality spay/neuter clinic for cats. Kerry Perry, director of the non-profit organization, said the service is needed to assist in the overwhelming cat overpopulation problem. We, as a group, were trying to decide what we could best do to stop the need for euthanasia as a means of population control in cats. After hosting some monthly spay/neuter clinics, we decided that people having access to low cost spaying and neutering is the first step. After hiring a staff vet, our clinic became a reality in January 2014. We accept pets, barn cats, ferals, strays and community cats with no geographic or income limitations. One of the biggest things people have to remember is that, while it is a kindness to feed a stray cat, especially in the winter, you must have that cat spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Females can go into heat by 4 months and start producing kittens shortly thereafter. It will very quickly become an out of control problem if you don’t take that first step. We charge $40.00 for the spay or neuter, plus $12.00 for a required rabies vaccine, which is within most people’s reach. There are low income programs in Lycoming County we can direct you to, which may pay for the spay or neuter, if you qualify. We also offer other vaccines, and have a wellness clinic once a month for cats that need their annual vaccines, parasite treatment or nail clipping. Our goal is to work with all cat caregivers, shelters and rescuers to be sure that all cats are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. This creates a healthier environment for the human population, as well as for the cats. We are not a shelter, and at this time are not accepting cats for re-homing, nor do we have an outlet for unwanted feral cats. If anyone is interested in accepting feral or stray cats for barn cats, please contact us. These cats would be spayed/ neutered and have their rabies vaccine. We are open for surgeries Monday through Friday. Appointments are required except for trapped feral cats, which we will accept for surgery without an appointment. We can be reached at 570-971-4592 or 505-1473. We are on Facebook, and our website is www.beckoningcatproject.org.

Pesky Parasites

by Calico Creek Vet Clinic After a long, cold winter, warmer weather is finally here. Warm weather means more outdoor play time for you and your pet. Here are some tips to stay safe and parasite-free while enjoying the sunshine. Fleas, Ticks, & Heartworms Fleas: There are more than 200 species of fleas in the United States, but the most common variety to affect dogs is, ironically, the cat flea. These wingless insects feed off your pet and use his comfy coat as a nesting ground. Administering a monthly preventative to your pet will destroy fleas. Vacuuming frequently & disposing of the vacuum bag will eliminate most fleas from the home. Also, washing you pets’ bedding weekly will help to prevent infestation. Ticks: These parasites pose a greater risk than fleas because they can transmit serious illnesses, like Lyme disease. Monthly topical medications can help protect your pet against ticks, and your veterinarian may recommend a Lyme disease vaccine. Be sure to check your pets’ coats for ticks after being in a wooded, grassy, or beach area. If you see a tick, remove it with tweezers or a tick twister. (Note: DO NOT try to burn the tick - this method rarely works and is dangerous to your pet.) Heartworm: When a pet is infected with this disease, which is spread by mosquitos and prevalent throughout the United States, the worms can cause damage to arteries and the lungs. Common signs are coughing, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. The condition is treatable, but treatment is expensive and typically requires hospitalization. It’s important to keep your pet on a monthly preventative medication, available at your regular veterinarian, and to get them tested for heartworm once a year, even if they are indoor-only pets. www.bear999.com

Shoebox Letters’ “Honest Truth” starts up where Shoebox’s last cd “Better Time” left off: Great songs featuring sweet harmonies and a warm, comfortable sound, dominated by acoustic guitar, mandolin, accordion, and steel and baritone guitars. Shoebox Letters hail from the rain-soaked streets of Portland, Oregon. Their music is an intoxicating blend of roots rock and alternative country. The band debuted in June 2009 and currently features Dennis Winslow on guitars and vocals; Dave Stricker on bass; Stephanie Pranzetti on vocals; Daria Chick on vocals; David Allen Baker on vocals and multi-instrumentalist and Producer Ronn Chick. The band has evolved into an acoustic-based amalgam of country, blues, folk and bluegrass - that evolution is apparent on the new “Honest Truth,” a disc that belongs in your personal collection!

Historical Facts on Wayne Township • In 1829, 175 years ago, most of Wayne Township’s people would have remembered the township was named for General Anthony (Mad Anthony) Wayne. His reputation justly rose from his performance as an officer during the Revolutionary War and an Indian fighter after that conflict. • Only 44 years earlier, in 1795, the township was taken from Nippenose Township, Northumberland County. • People of 1839 would have known exactly where Fort Horn was located. And they would have recalled Robert Love, who settled on a creek named for him. He was one of the Fair Play men who declared Independence from King George before the Declaration of Independence was written in Philadelphia. • Some people of 1839 Wayne Township might have remembered the sad story of John Logan and his murdered family. In local schools, children might have recited his magnificant Lament as American school children did for decades after the Native American’s death. We remember him today with a marker on Logan’s Path. • It’s certain township residents in 1839 numbered far fewer than 2,053 people who lived here in 2010. And, of course, in 1839, none of them sat in front of computers. They farmed, kept store, and lumbered back then. • 175 years ago, township residents would have known that a New Yorker, Martin Van Buren, was President of the United States. And they would have marveled at stories of steam engines, railroads, and canal commerce.

Historic Photo of the Shoemaker Mansion.

The homestead known as “Restless Oaks” in McElhattan PA was the home of the late Col. Henry W. Shoemaker, who died in 1958. Colonel Shoemaker was a writer of Pennsylvania Folklore, a conservationist, and his Barn Museum was well known in Central Pennsylvania. Shoemaker’s parents were railroad barons, and a part of New York City society in the 1880’s, living next door to the Rockefellers. The family used to spend summers in the mansion in McElhattan, where Henry learned to explore the woods and hunt.

5 Tips For Keeping Tweens and Teens Busy During the Summer

When kids hit the tween and teen years, summers change. Not only are the kids who were just playing hide-and-go-seek yesterday no longer interested in spending the day at the children’s museum, but they’re getting old enough to pull their weight at home and start learning important life skills. And as a mother, you start feeling the pressure to help them do just that. Here are a few ways to keep your tween or teen busy during the summer: 1. Home work. No, not that kind. In addition to regular daily chores, invite your teen or tween to do things around the house they don’t normally have time for during the school year, like bringing in and putting away groceries, helping with yard work, making dinner, or doing laundry. Remind them that the more they help, the more time there will be to do something fun. Summer is also a great time of year for teaching basic life skills such as cooking, ironing, balancing a checkbook, etc. Kids in this age group are often more capable than we think and will feel a sense of pride when they learn how to do these “adult” tasks. 2. Paid work. Part-time work helps teens make friends, comply with authority, develop a strong work ethic, and learn the value of a dollar. You’d be surprised how many places are willing to hire kids as young as fourteen years old. Have them apply for work at places they like to spend their free time, or have them work for you if you have your own business. If it’s a tween we’re talking about, there are still plenty of opportunities to earn money over the summer by babysitting, being a mother’s helper, doing yard work, washing cars, pet sitting, or helping an elderly person with household chores. Get creative! One fun idea for both age groups is to make and sell something at the local Farmer’s Market. Another is for kids to put together a little “summer camp” for younger kids in the neighborhood where they conduct crafts and games and story-time for a few hours a day for a week and earn a little money. 3. Volunteer work. Don’t just encourage your teen or tween to make money over the summer, encourage them to build their “resume” and gain practical work experience through volunteering. Many organizations offer internships for high school students, and many local businesses welcome teens as part of an informal job shadowing program. Volunteering keeps your teen or tween busy while giving them a sense of purpose and self-confidence that can only be found in volunteer service. Animal shelters, hospitals, libraries, soup kitchens, city and state parks, retirement homes, homeless shelters, churches – the possibilities are endless. 4. Brain work. Even though they’ve outgrown the usual summer camps and classes, there are still plenty of ways to keep your teen or tween’s brain active during the summer. The summer reading program at your local library isn’t just for little kids. Have them set summer reading goals and help them research great books to read. Have them check out magazines, how-to books, cookbooks, or pool-side paperbacks to help them get hooked on reading if they’re struggling. Look into online courses for credit. iTunes and YouTube have free online lectures from major universities across the world. 5. Fun “work.” In the end, summer is really about having fun, and there’s really no better time to explore new interests and hobbies. Local recreation departments, the YMCA, and community colleges frequently have short-term classes on a variety of topics, such as dance, art, cooking, sewing, music, videography, crafting, and sports. Keeping physically active during the summer months is not only fun, but it keeps your teen or tween healthy and improves their mood. Even if they aren’t particularly athletic, encourage them to play around with miniature golf, hike or bike with friends to a favorite destination, swim (of course!), or hit tennis balls against a wall. It can work great to include 20 minutes of active play or exercise on a list of daily “mustdo’s” for your teen or tween. Success Story...

Rehabilitation Helps a Stroke Patient Return Home

Lee Glass likes to be busy. At 77, he builds crafts, enjoys yard work and gardening, and takes care of a few chickens (13,000 to be exact) on the family farm. After a recent stroke, and a stay at Geisinger Medical Center, Lee chose rehabilitation at HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital. Like Lee, most people have to make a choice about stroke rehabilitation from a hospital bed. Knowing where you would go ahead of time, and what level of rehabilitation you want, can make all the difference in how you recover. When Lee started inpatient stroke rehabilitation, he had limited use of his right side, including his right arm. Lee received three hours of therapy a day, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Lee was focused on improving the function and strength of his right side. “I’ve been building things my whole life,” says Lee. “I built our home, and everything from to cradles to toy boxes. I owe my great-granddaughter a jewelry box; that’s next!” At HealthSouth, Lee had daily physician visits, and an interdisciplinary health care team to manage his care. His goal was to get strong and return to his home and his family. Lee says, “The food at HealthSouth is ‘good to very good,’ but I’m ready for my wife’s cooking again.” An important component of rehabilitation at HealthSouth is education. Stroke patients like Lee, and their families, learn about nutrition, safety in the home and stroke risk factors, both through classes and at the bedside. HealthSouth pharmacists also participate in education, helping patients and families manage their medications. “We’re available to help as much as someone needs,” says HealthSouth Pharmacist Lance Kephart. “We’ll do a ‘brown bag review’ for patients who want it. We go over every medicine they take, explain how they work and look for anything that is outdated or may need to be adjusted.” After two weeks of therapy, Lee is walking with ease, using stairs, and feeding himself with his right arm again. Lee will be discharged to home, transitioning from inpatient therapy at Pleasant Gap to outpatient therapy at a HealthSouth Outpatient Clinic. Reflecting on his stroke, Lee says, “You think it will HealthSouth Speech-language never happen to you. I’m glad that I came here, because now I Pathologist Maria Dombrowski observes the cognitive and get to go home and get back to doing the things I love.”

HealthSouth’s stroke rehabilitation program is certified by the Joint Commission, the gold seal of approval in health care. For more information about HealthSouth inpatient or outpatient stroke rehabilitation, or a tour, call (814) 359-3421 or visit www.nittanyvalleyrehab.com.

June is Child Vision Awareness Month! Spotting Eye Problems in Children Signs that a child may have vision problems include: • constant eye rubbing • extreme light sensitivity • poor focusing • poor visual tracking (following an object) • abnormal alignment or movement of the eyes (after 6 months of age) • chronic redness of the eyes • chronic tearing of the eyes • a white pupil instead of black In school-age children, watch for other signs, such as: • inability to see objects at a distance • inability to read the blackboard • squinting • difficulty reading • sitting too close to the TV Watch your child for evidence of poor vision or crossed eyes. If you notice any eye problems, have your child examined immediately so that the problem doesn’t become permanent. If caught early, eye conditions often can be reversed.

Glasses and Contacts Kids of all ages, even babies, can wear glasses and contacts. Keep these tips in mind for kids who wear glasses: • Allow kids to pick their own frames. • Plastic frames are best for children younger than 2. • If older kids wear metal frames, make sure they have spring hinges, which are more durable. • An elastic strap attached to the glasses will help keep them in place for active toddlers. • Kids with severe eye problems may need special lenses called high-index lenses, which are thinner and lighter than plastic lenses. • Polycarbonate lenses are recommended for all kids, especially for kids who play sports. Polycarbonate is a tough, shatter-proof, transparent thermoplastic used to make thin, light lenses. However, although they’re very impact-resistant, these lenses scratch more easily than plastic lenses.

Infants born with congenital cataracts may need to have their cataracts surgically removed during the first few weeks of life. Some children born with cataracts wear contact lenses after cataract surgery. Around age 10, kids may express a desire to get contact lenses for cosmetic reasons or convenience, if they play sports. Allowing a child to wear contacts depends on his or her ability to insert and remove lenses properly, faithfully take them out as required, and clean them as recommended by the doctor. Contact lens problems are almost always caused by poor habits and bad hygiene. Your eye doctor can help you decide what type of vision correction is best for your child. Centre County youth tell us that community disorganization is something that puts them at risk. This includes how youth view their neighborhood -is there crime or fighting? Do they feel safe?

A risk factor is something negative in a young person’s environment that increases the likelihood of substance use, health issues, or behavior problems. 68

Ask Greta

Dear Greta, I’m good friends with the woman next door, but she and her husband fight constantly in front of me and others. Recently, we were all in their car. She was driving, and he repeatedly told her everything she was doing wrong. Then he called to order a pizza, and she laid into him, saying he was ordering wrong. He yelled, “Why do you always complicate things?!” It was really unpleasant. Then, last week, they came to a dinner party at my house and started fighting right at the table! Is there any way to stop the tension and this rude behavior? - Uncomfortable Dear Uncomfortable, It’s so sweet when you look at a couple and realize that their relationship reminds you of a classic romantic comedy -- like “Apocalypse Now.” There are social conventions we all just know to adhere to, like you don’t get to use other people’s ears as hampers for your relationship’s dirty laundry. Well-meaning people will advise you to take the woman aside (embarrassing and uncomfortable!) or chirp “Yoo-hoo, I’m right here!” when they go from zero to “I hate you” right in front of you. But there’s a good chance these suggestions won’t work, thanks to our body’s sloppy and imprecise “fight or flight” system, which is seriously in need of an upgrade. In other words, the behavior you have the best success modifying is your own. And no, the modification shouldn’t involve riding in the trunk when you go places with them or having the garden hose close at hand at your dinner parties so you can break up any snarling dogs or married couples. A couple with these poor party manners don’t deserve your company - much as they might like to have a witness in case one of them needs to claim “self-defense.” You may want to see the wife alone, but you should decline all future opportunities to be in the presence of this duo.
