Tips for Hiring a Contractor Go with Your Gut - A contractor could be in your home and around your family for days, weeks, or even months while changing the way your house looks and functions. So if you don’t like a contractor for any reason, don’t hire him or her - go with your gut. Make Sure the Contractor is Licensed to Work in Your Area, Bonded, and Insured - Having a license and insurance demonstrates a contractor’s credibility and knowledge. Have a Detailed Contract in Place Before any Work Begins - The contract should cover costs, brands of items being installed, approximate start and finish dates, and the complete set of drawings being used with written specifications. Find out Who’s Performing the Work - Will the person you’re hiring do the work him/herself, or will it be subcontracted to someone else? It’s nice to know who will be showing up on your doorstep, and large jobs like additions and major kitchen remodels often involve multiple subcontractors, such as electricians and plumbers. Give the Contractor Guidelines for Working In or Around Your Home - If you don’t want the workers showing up before a certain time, staying past a certain hour, using your bathroom, or you need to have the project finished by a specific date, tell the contractor before you hire him/her. Know What Your Responsibilities Are - You may have to move everything out of a room so it can be painted or remove a fence so a concrete truck can be driven into your backyard - ask before you hire them. Look at Work Samples - This lets you see a contractor’s handiwork and may spark ideas for your project. Samples are sometimes more important than references, - they allow you to see the quality of our work. Think Locally - Area contractors who have been in business for a long time are usually reliable and safe bets for projects. If they didn’t do good work in your community, they wouldn’t still be around. Info retrieved online at: www.popularmechanics.com/home/improvement/interior/10-tips-for-hiring-a-contractor#slide-10

Some points to consider when designing your pool:

1. Access: Ensure there is easy access to your pool from your house, restroom, or entertainment area. You might want to consider how patios, decks, or walkways are positioned to provide a safe and simple entrance and exit between your home and your pool. 2. Lines and Cables: Before settling on a location, you need to ensure that there are no electrical or telephone wires, sewer or septic lines, or buried pipes. 3. Drainage: Water needs to drain away from the pool to avoid standing water or dirt and mud getting into the pool. This is especially important if you’re in a location that has a history of flooding. 4. Add-Ons: If you plan to install a diving board, spa, slide, or waterfall, make sure that you plan for adequate deck space for each add-on. 5. Sheds: A common method of protecting equipment is to build an equipment shed close to the pool. 6. Sun vs Shade: The sun can help to keep your pool water warm; however, placing your pool under trees can result in a lot of extra maintenance. Make sure you schedule an initial on-site consultation with a professional so that your pool’s primary functions and activities are reflected in the design, and so they understand the overall vision of what you want in your backyard. http://www.aquapools.com/6deadlymistakes.php

Kitchen Remodeling strategies: Weimaraner Point

• Build bridges, not walls. Islands and peninsulas are the kitchen's new walls. Because you can see over and around them, they connect the kitchen to an adjacent dining area, living room, or family room, and yet define the kitchen's borders. They also allow the cook to maintain visual and conversational contact with family members and guests. • Cut back on cabinets. In a kitchen with just one or two walls, finding space for storage is problematic. But resist the impulse to cram in too many cabinets. Instead, design a storage-intensive walk-in pantry. Banish rarely used goods -- the picnicware, the punch bowl, the turkey roaster - to the basement, mudroom, or garage. Store the good china away. • Stagger the height, length and depth of wall cabinets. The idea here is to break up the horizontal lines at the top and bottom of a row of cabinets that can make a kitchen look rigid and static. • Stagger the height of base cabinets and counters, too. Not all countertops have to be at the same height. Lower a cooktop by 4-6 inches and allow 15-18 inches of counter space at the same height on either side. • Vary cabinet door styles. There's no law that says all cabinets have to be identical. Use solid doors on some cabinets and glass doors on others. Or outfit a couple of doors with wire mesh, lattice or even shirred fabric. • Alternate countertop and backsplash materials. Reserve granite for an island and use a neutral solid surface material for all the other countertops. Top a baking counter with a slab of marble. Use ceramic tile or laminate in the wet areas and top a peninsula with maple butcher block. • Add a raised ledge or breakfast bar to an island or peninsula to hide the cooktop. If you can't position tall double ovens so that they're out of view of neighboring spaces, think about installing a second under-the-counter oven in an island or peninsula.

Spring Home Improvement ... Spring Home Improvement

Sprucing up Your Home for Spring Spring is the perfect time to start sprucing up your home so you can enjoy this summer worry-free. Here are a few indoor tips to help you prepare your home for the summer:

HVAC. It’s a good idea to have your air system serviced once a year or as recommended by your manufacturer. Cleaning and vacuuming baseboard heaters and draining radiators are recommended. Make sure you clean and replace all dirty air filters and inspect your home’s heating ducts and vents to solidify any leaky joints or connections to provide maximum efficiency. Leaks force your air conditioner to work harder, raising your energy cost. A clean air filter system also means healthier breathing. A home repair specialist can pinpoint problems in the home and provide recommendations on how to fix them. Crown Molding. Crown molding adds a handsome architectural detail that gives a room substance. The look of the molding reinforces charm and transforms spaces with simple walls into elegant and sophisticated decor. If your home is traditional in design, molding changes a nondescript surface into a focal point and sets your house apart while increasing its perceived value. New Paint. Painting is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to enhance the appearance of a room. Whether you are moving into a new home that needs some pizzazz or creating a new look in an old room, a splash of color on your walls can take them from dull to dynamic. Flooring. Floors are one of the most important elements in giving a home its unique character. Popular hardwood flooring such as oak, hickory and cherry wood are very durable and extremely attractive. If you are not a fan of hardwood, you may prefer the all natural tiles made of stone, ceramic and porcelain. They look exceptional, and do not require a lot of maintenance. New Lighting. New lighting ties each of the elements together by highlighting visual size, height, depth and color. Your lighting scheme will greatly depend on your room size, wall colors, and available natural light. In addition to these simple changes, replacing lighting and electrical outlet plates also adds to the overall atmosphere of any room.

Green Bathroom Remodeling Tips:

• Install low flow faucets and showerheads. They can reduce water usage of these fixtures by up to 60%. • Install low-flush, high-efficiency toilets. Older toilets use between 3.5-7 gallons per flush. New models do the job just as well with 1.6 gallons of water or less. • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use 75% less energy and last 10 times as long. • Install low-e, multiple paned windows with vinyl or wood frames. Installing energy-efficient windows throughout your home can reduce total energy costs by 30-50%. • Install a skylight to increase natural lighting. • Install radiant heating. It’s more efficient and healthier than forced air. • Insulate plumbing, and remove it from outside walls. Doing so reduces heat loss as water travels from your hot water heater to the faucet, and saves on water heating costs. • Install an “On-demand” hot water circulation pump. These pumps send hot water to your faucet n seconds, and reduce the demands placed on your hot water heater. • Consider replacing your old hot water heater with a newer, more efficient model. • Insulate as much as possible. If you’re gutting your bathroom anyway, the more insulation you install in Info received online at: https://pro.homeadvisor.com/ the walls, the better. article.show.Going-Green-Bathroom-Remodels.16464.html

Battle of The Sexes Dear Battle of the Sexes: I think most men would live like complete slobs if they were left alone to do so. There was a commercial on years ago where the man freshens up simply by turning his shirt inside out is not much of a stretch as far as I can tell. My husband only lets me wash his clothes after he’s worn them for about a week, and if I let him, he would eat his meals in the bathroom! He doesn’t care about germs, and never washes his hands unless I nag him. I guess it would be kind of funny if it wasn’t a health hazard! What’s the deal? Don’t they know what a turn-off slobbiness is? - Name withheld, Beech Creek Dear Battle of the Sexes: It’s amazing how much women change (or at least the ones I’ve dated) once they think they have you wrapped around their finger. My fiancè used to be very sweet, now she thinks she can tell me what to do all the time. She even criticizes the way I dress, and all of a sudden, she doesn’t like my friends. This has happened several times before. It really makes me wonder what they saw in me in the first place if there’s so much wrong with me now! - Fed Up, Lock Haven Send your responses to these letters, or mail in your own gripes to: “Good News” P.O. Can We Join Your Family?

Dontaye

Children Waiting For A Home...

Dontaye is a happy, affectionate 13-year-old who smiles a lot. He has abundant energy and loves to explore his surroundings while running around enthusiastically. Very social, Dontaye enjoys playing with other children his age and going out to eat on trips with them and the staff of his foster care facility. His favorite activity is playing with wagons and cars that make sounds. He also likes arts and crafts and dancing. Dontaye is non-verbal and uses a variety of ways to be understood and communicate his needs. Gym and lunch are his favorite parts of the school day. The ideal family for him will be patient and loving and committed to supporting his many needs, which include special education services, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapies.

Jermaine, 11, is very caring towards others. He easily engages in conversation and enjoys making new friends. His favorite pastimes include outdoor activities, swimming, riding his bike, and playing basketball. When he is indoors, he spends many happy hours doing puzzles such as word search. Jermaine’s dream is to ride a motorcycle or fly a helicopter, but for now he is concentrating on mastering the intricacies of the skateboard he recently received. In school, he works very hard to do the best that he can. Math is his favorite subject. In his foster care placement Jermaine is very neat and organized and takes pride in keeping his room clean. He would thrive in a household with a patient, loving mom and dad that would provide a structured environment for him.

Desmond

Jermaine

Desmond is a fun-loving, playful eight-year-old who enjoys spending time with his friends. He loves to run, play chess, solve puzzles, and go to the beach. Reading is another favorite pastime, and he can often be found absorbed in a good book. In school Desmond is a good student. His social worker says he is very smart and loves to learn. Math is his favorite subject. In his foster care facility he likes doing his chores. When he grows up he would like to be a policeman so he can help people. But he has a more immediate goal—to be adopted. He is very anxious to find a forever family so he does not have to move or say goodbye any more. “I want a family that will be nice to me and will take good care of me,” he says. His social worker says he would be a great addition to any family.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

National Adoption Center • 1500 Walnut Street, Suite 701 • Philadelphia, PA 19102 1-800-TO-ADOPT www.adopt.org The National Adoption Center is a private, non-profit organization that expands adoption opportunities for children throughout the United States, particularly for children with special needs and those from minority cultures.

Laugh

The Evolution of Motherhood Yes, parenthood changes everything. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child differs from having your first:

Your Clothes: 1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as your OB/GYN confirms your pregnancy. 2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as possible. 3rd baby: Your maternity clothes ARE your regular clothes. Preparing for the Birth: 1st baby: You practice your breathing religiously. 2nd baby: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time, breathing didn’t do a thing. 3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your 8th month. The Layette: 1st baby: You pre-wash your newborn’s clothes, color-coordinate them, and fold them neatly in the baby’s little bureau. 2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the darkest stains. 3rd baby: Boys can wear pink, can’t they?

Worries: 1st baby: At the first sign of distress-a whimper, a frown-you pick up the baby. 2nd baby: You pick the baby up when her wails threaten to wake your firstborn. 3rd baby: You teach your 3-year-old how to rewind the mechanical swing. Activities: 1st baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics, Baby Swing, and Baby Story Hour. 2nd baby: You take your infant to Baby Gymnastics. 3rd baby: You take your infant to the supermarket and the dry cleaner. Going Out: 1st baby: The first time you leave your baby with a sitter, you call home 5 times. 2nd baby: Just before you walk out the door, you remember to leave a number where you can be reached. 3rd baby: You leave instructions for the sitter to call only if she sees blood.

A family decided to move to a town across the river where they lived. They could only cross the river by ferryboat. The family members asked the boat captain: “What kind of people live in our new town?” He responded, “What kind of people did you find in our old town?” They said: “Oh, they were the most wonderful people- loving caring, kind and thoughtful. We really hated to lose them.” The man replied: “Well, I think you will find that the people in your new town are the same kind of folks.” A week later, another family moved from the same location of the first family. They also had to cross the same river on the same boat. The family members asked the boat captain the same question as the first family, and they received a similar response: “What kind of people did you find in your old town?” “Oh, those folks! What a bunch of no-good, low-down cutthroats. They would lie about you, talk about you behind your back and gossip. We could not wait to get away from them.” The captain said: “Those are the kind of folks you are going to find in your new town. Each family had the power to choose their reality. We have the power to choose ours. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: “Each of us sees in others what we carry in our own hearts.” The Apostle Paul said: “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8).

Fleas, Fleas, and More Fleas! by Calico Creek Vet Clinic With the warmer weather also comes the dreaded fleas. Not only can fleas be bothersome to our pets, they can also cause health issues. Pets that have an allergic reaction to flea bites can develop flea allergy dermatitis. This can be an expensive condition to treat, and the skin irritation can be painful for your pet. Your pet can also contract tapeworms from ingesting fleas. Not only can fleas affect our four-legged friends, they can also affect us. Flea bites can be extremely irritating to humans, depending on how sensitive a person’s skin is. Flea bites on humans are usually found around the lower legs and waist area. All of these problems can be avoided very easily by using an effective flea treatment. There are many products available to prevent fleas on your animal, however you must be careful when choosing a product. Cats especially are very sensitive to certain tick preventatives, so it is important to read all warnings before applying anything to your pet. For example, products like K-9 Advantix and Vectra for dogs should never be applied to cats. These products can cause severe, often life threatening, reactions to your cat. Some safe alternatives for the treatment and prevention of fleas in cats are Revolution, Feline Frontline, and Advantage. Many products are also available for dogs for preventing fleas, such as Revolution, Vectra, Frontline for dogs, Comfortis, Promeris, and K-9 Advantage/Advantix. Many dog owners have enjoyed the benefits of Comfortis as it is a chewable tablet instead of a topical medication. Most of these products are available at Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic. Feel free to stop in and see us and we can help you decide which flea product will be best for your pet! It is very important to treat all animals in your house, even if they never go outside. This is one of the main reasons flea products are ineffective. Another is the usage of over-the-counter products sold at chain/grocery stores that aren’t as effective. www.bear999.com

P.E.A.K. Students at CMHS

P.E.A.K. stands for Positive attitude, Encouraging others, Academics, and Kindness. Every other week, 10 teachers are randomly selected to nominate one student who exemplifies these qualities. Nominated students receive rewards for a week long period that includes: a free pass to all CMHS athletic events, a pass to get to the front of the lunch line, the ability to come to school at 9am on an extended homeroom day, and a preferred parking spot. The purpose of P.E.A.K. is to recognize and reward students making a positive contribution to Central Mountain High School.

Congratulations to last month’s P.E.A.K. Students!

March P.E.A.K. Students:

Amber Hanley - P.E.A.K. student Amber is a senior at Central Mountain High School. Amber has one sister and she enjoys hanging out with her friends. She was nominated by her Child Care teacher Mrs. VanGorder, because “She is kind, cooperative, and always strives to do her very best. She works well with both her peers and the preschool children.” Gage Hoy - Senior Gage was nominated for PEAK by Mr. Fred Hoy because, “He is a dynamic young man. He has the highest average out of all of the Drafting and Design classes. Gage is always the first kid to help any of his peers work though a tough lab assignment. In fact, he regularly spends his lunch time tutoring his friends in AutoCAD.” Nikki Vonada - Senior Nikki enjoys hunting, spending time with her nieces, and loves the outdoors. She was nominated by Mrs. Jennifer Temple, who teaches Nikki in English and Journalism. Mrs. Temple explains, “She always comes to school with a positive attitude and tries to be nice to everyone.” Erin Fetzer - Sophomore Erin was nominated by Guidance Counselor Mrs. Shadle-Smith. She was nominated, because “She has been very positive during each interaction and appears to do well in her courses. Erin is the type of student who is appreciative when recognized as doing well by others.” Corina Rodriguez - Corina is a PEAK student. She likes to hang out with friends and play with her new kittens. Her favorite thing about being a PEAK student was being allowed to come in late. She was nominated by Mr. Thompson for her positive attitude and her willingness to help others. Brianna “Bri” Brungard - Brianna “Bri” is a sophomore at CMHS. Her hobbies include soccer and hanging out with her friends. She was nominated by Mr. Gentzel, because “She comes to class everyday with a big smile and positive attitude. She has a wonderful personality and gets along with everyone in her class.” Ryan Rupert - Junior Ryan is in 4H, FFA, and Teen Court. Ryan also does Karate. Mr. Herman nominated him for PEAK because, “He is nice to everyone!! Every day I see Ryan he is always saying hello to everyone and he is always willing to help out other students. If he is absent, he continually seeks help to make sure he stays on top of everything!” Hunter Shawley - Junior Hunter likes to watch sports and play basketball with friends. Mrs. Heivley nominated him because, “Hunter is always kind to other students and is always offering suggestions to help someone. He also looks on the bright side of everything with a smile on his face.” Amanda Russo - Amanda was nominated by Mrs. Pompili, who says, “Amanda strives to do well in class, is helpful to her classmates, and is appreciative of her peers/teachers.” 40

Trevor Dietz -Trevor is a junior at Central Mountain. In his spare time, he works at Subway and hangs out with friends. Mrs. Dilley explains why she nominated Trevor, “He is always polite and respectful, not only to the staff at CMHS, but also to his fellow students. When he saw me carrying things in the hallway, he didn’t just walk by and pretend he didn’t see me. He was the only one who offered to help.” Tyler White - Senior Tyler was nominated as a PEAK student by Mr. Packer, because “Tyler exemplifies a model student with attendance, attitude, and effort. Tyler takes an active interest in the classroom both from a personal level and lending a helping hand to his peers. Tyler’s value as a student and classmate goes far beyond the academic grade he receives.” Breanna Mincer - Freshman Breanna was nominated for PEAK by Mrs. Akeley. Mrs. Akeley nominated her because she has been a great asset to the classroom. She has a great attitude and helps her classmates. She pays attention and gets her work done. Alexis Martin - Junior Alexis was nominated by Athletic Secretary Kelly Wark. Mrs. Wark nominated Alexis, because “Based on the interactions that I have had with her, she is very polite and respectful.” Draven King - Junior Draven was nominated by Mr. Stabley, because “Draven always does what is asked of him without complaint. He is always eager to help his classmates when they are struggling. It’s a real pleasure to work with Draven.” After school, Dravin enjoys riding his scooter all around. He also likes to work on his truck. Sunny Carey - Sunny is a CMHS junior. She was nominated by Mrs. K. Miller, who explains, “She comes well prepared for class each day, enjoys learning, and helps the students in her group with a smile.” Jordan Kaler - Senior Jordan enjoys playing softball for the school and also loves spending time with her pup, Tucker. She was nominated by Mrs. Hull, because “Anytime I see Jordan in the hall, she always has a smile on her face. In addition, she works very hard in the classroom and completes all activities to classroom expectations.” Some of Macayla’s hobbies include playing with Legos, building rocket ships, playing games, and riding skateboards. Karlie Fryer - Sophomore Karlie was nominated as a PEAK student by Mrs. Nines. Karlie enjoys listening to music, shopping, and playing with her pets. She was nominated, because “She is a very driven student who always goes above and beyond to understand the material. She has a very kind heart and is always willing to assist other students with the material.” Avery Shaffer - Avery is a senior nominated for PEAK by Mr. Thompson, because “She is always nice to everyone, and is the first to respond in class when I need a volunteer. Another great reason is that she is a great supporter of extra-curricular activities like sports, dances, all night volleyball, etc. We need more students that participate in school functions like she does.” T.J. Bennett - T.J. is a freshman two-time PEAK nominee. He was nominated this time by Mr. Brinker, because “He just has done things spot on this week and this semester.” Mr. Larry Rhine - Mr. Rhine, history teacher, was nominated by student, Trevor Dietz. Trevor nominated Mr. Rhine, because “He is always helpful and energetic with his students. He goes out of his way wherever and whenever he can to help a student. When he saw a student struggling with her breakfast in the hallway, he went over and helped her when no one else did. Mr. Rhine is a great influence in our school.”

Wildcat of the Month:

The Central Mountain Football team is pleased to announce the Wildcat of the Month for April. This award is given to one player in the program who demonstrates leadership, character, and discipline in the classroom and on the football team. I am proud, as the head football coach, to announce Mr. Hunter Baker as the Wildcat of the Month. Hunter has been a staple in the weight room over the winter and has demonstrated leadership within the program helping other players and leading by example. Hunter is a current sophomore and will be looking to make an impact on the varsity field as an Offensive Guard and Linebacker. Hunter also maintains the same high standards in the classroom with an average of 95.6%. The program is very lucky to have a young man such as Hunter to lead the team both on and off the field. Hunter always gives one hundred percent and his effort is contagious. He has made an immediate impact on the program and we look forward to seeing him continue to do great things as a Wildcat.

DR. DAVE’S Top 10 DVD’s

1) American Hustle Director David O. Russell can do no wrong! - from his early work (“I Heart Huckabees”, “Flirting With Disaster”, “Three Kings”), you knew this guy had a singular voice, but his last two offerings have been even better than anyone could have thought - “Silver Linings Playbook” won a ton of awards, and this film should have won more....Russell wrote the story, directed, and convinced the amazing actors (Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale) to bring his vision to life....Buy it! 2) Frozen Welcome back, Kristen Bell! - the film version of her TV show “Veronica Mars” is now in theatres, supported by a Kickstarter campaign that probably wouldn’t have worked if not for her performance in this almost perfect animated feature....it hits the mark in the most important areas - voices, songs, and story. Buy it! 3) Saving Mr. Banks Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney, trying to make the a film out of the book “Mary Poppins” his way, but Poppins author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) resists. Both Hanks and Thompson have won multiple Oscars, and it’s easy to see why here....Rent it! 4) The Wolf of Wall Street A testament to excess, Martin Scorsese’s almost three hour examination of the rise and fall of a greedy stockbroker in the go-go ‘80’s is helped immeasurably by the brilliant acting of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, riding the wave of Scorsese’s vision....a one of a kind experience. Rent it! 5) Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues This film feels flat when compared to the promotional campaign that preceded it (I loved the Dodge ads!) nevertheless, it’s still a lot of fun (although overlong) - a perfect case of knowing what you’re going to get, then being happy to get it...Rent it!

Tax Deductions You May Not Be Aware Of

Are you leaving tax savings on the table? Plenty of legitimate business expenses aren’t spelled out by the Internal Revenue Service. It’s up to you to find them and keep records that will show they’re reasonable if you get audited. Most “ordinary and necessary” business expenses can be deducted, says Bernard Kamoroff, a CPA and author of “422 Tax Deductions for Businesses & Self-Employed Individuals.” Here are write-offs Kamoroff identifies that you may qualify for without even knowing. When in doubt, check with your accountant to see if these apply to you. ATM Fees, Credit-Card Fees, and Interest - You can deduct ATM fees, credit-card fees, and other bank charges incurred on your business accounts. Category this deduction falls into: Office expenses; interest Books, Magazines, and Newspapers - Business-related books and subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, and trade publications are deductible. Category: Office expenses Business Cards - Deduct the cost of business cards for yourself and your employees. Category: Office expenses Cell Phones - If more than half of your cell-phone use is for business, you can deduct that proportion of the cost, up to the full amount if you have a dedicated cell phone for your company. Category: Office expenses Child Care - If you offer employees child care, you can deduct the cost. You can offer employees up to $5,000 a year in dependent-care benefits that are excluded from their wages, tax-free to them and deductible for you. Employees may qualify for other dependent-care tax credits. For more, check the IRS guidelines. Category: Employee benefit programs Cleaning Service - The cost of a cleaner or janitor to maintain your place of work is deductible. Category: Office expense Coffee and Snacks - Write off what you pay to keep yourself and your staff caffeinated. Other small office snacks are deductible, but meals for yourself are not, and the cost of meals provided to employees can only be deducted if there’s a business reason for having them eat at work. Category : Office expenses Company Parties - Deduct the cost of a party where all employees are invited. Business parties/ events that are thrown to promote the business are considered entertainment, and are 50% deductible. Category: Office expense, entertainment. Disabled Access - Small businesses can get credits and deductions for the cost of making their place of business accessible to people with disabilities. For more information, see the IRS guide. Dues - Deduct membership fees in trade organizations, professional groups, and chambers of commerce. Portions of dues that are for political lobbying are not deductible, and dues for political clubs or recreational groups aren’t business expenses and can’t be deducted. Category: Other expenses Garbage Pickup - If you pay to have your trash hauled, you can deduct the cost. Some manufacturers may have to add this to the cost of inventory. Category: Utilities Greeting Cards - Greeting cards to clients and prospects count as tax-deductible expenses. Category: Office expenses Internet Access - You can deduct the cost of your Internet access, but if you use the connection for both business and personal purposes, you can only deduct the amount used for business. Category: Office expenses Lists - If you buy or rent lists of e-mail/mailing addresses or phone numbers, you can write off the cost. Category: Advertising Stamps -Mailing costs, and the cost of renting post-office boxes are deductible. Category: Office expenses Tax Preparation - Deduct what you pay a tax preparer for the business portion of your taxes. info obtained from: businessweek.com Category: Legal/professional services

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

A Marriage License is Not a Sexual Agreement

Did you know that between one-third and one-half of all abused women are raped at least once by their partners during their relationship? Marital/spousal rape accounts for 25% of all rape, and occurs when your spouse forces you to take part in certain sex acts without your consent. No matter what kind of relationship there is between a perpetrator and a victim; sexual assault is sexual assault. Many people seem to believe that if two people are in a relationship, there cannot be a possibility of sexual assault. Much of society expects women to fulfill their “wifely duties;” thus complying with all sexual demands of her spouse. It is as if the woman is expected to give up her rights to say no when she lives with or marries the attacker. Many see sexual assaults in these cases as less serious than if carried out by a stranger or acquaintance and in this context, doesn’t constitute rape at all. Studies have shown that just the opposite is true. There is a whole other level of trauma found than in stranger or date rape. There is also more at stake for the victim when being sexually assaulted by their partner; there is more personal investment and trust. As a victim, women may also deal with other effects, such as having to deal with ongoing contact with the abuser, being in love with or having romantic feelings for the abuser, and fear of further sexual assault. In addition, victims may have trouble forming trusting relationships, and have more negative ideas about themselves and blame themselves for what happened. Unfortunately, rape or sexual assault is the most common form of attack against women. In any case, sexual assault is NEVER the victim’s fault. - Brittany Duke, Intern Lock Haven University

If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic abuse or sexual assault, contact Clinton County Women’s Center. Services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

We are very excited about our training. It is a very educational training and will teach everything you need to know about working with victims of domestic and sexual violence. Once trained, you will be able to join our group of committed individuals, and help others experiencing violence in their lives. Last year, we served many women, children, and men. We gave them shelter, options counseling, clothes, food, and just a safe place to stay. You can be an important part of this process. Success Story...

Managing the Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

HealthSouth understands the everyday challenges associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). An interdisciplinary team offers specialized inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation for a comprehensive, targeted plan of care. In addition to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, Parkinson’s patients benefit from comprehensive education. A HealthSouth pharmacist, psychologist, dietitian, and registered nurse lead classes to help patients better understand their disease and its symptoms. Nutrition: The interdisciplinary medical team looks at managing the patient’s symptoms, which can include freezing, tremors, rigidity, slurred speech, confusion and hallucinations. “Nutrition is an important component in our education for Parkinson’s patients,” says HealthSouth Dietitian Caryll DeFrate, RD, LDN. “For example, when protein is given with the Parkinson’s medication Sinemet, it can interfere with absorption. In our classes, and at the bedside, we teach patients to be aware of these and other issues that can affect their symptoms.” Psychology: HealthSouth Psychologist Peter O’Donnell, Ph.D., helps patients with psychological issues that may occur with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), one technique that has been shown to be very effective, helps people change negative thinking patterns and behaviors in order to reduce symptoms of depression. Learning these skills helps people cope better and think more positively for the long term. Counseling sessions can also provide vital support, understanding and education for Parkinson’s patients and their families. Medication: The right balance of medication/s can have a significant impact on a patient’s symptoms. In the Parkinson’s program, HealthSouth pharmacists look at patients’ symptoms for any patterns that might warrant an adjustment in their medication. These adjustments can improve symptoms associated with gait, tremors, incontinence, alertness and communication. Technology: HealthSouth has technology, unique to the Centre Eleanor Sagmuller (left) was region, to treat the symptoms of PD. For example, the Interactive recently diagnosed with ParkinMetronome (IM) is a brain-based therapeutic assessment and son’s disease. After a fall and a training program that improves attention, concentration, motor fractured hip, Eleanor, 86, came planning and sequencing. Improvements in those areas result to HealthSouth in Pleasant Gap in stronger motor control and coordination, enhanced balance to get strong and mobile again, working with Physical Therapist and gait, and improved language and cognition. Katie Donovan (right). “I know more now about my Parkinson’s April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, and HealthSouth is committed to raising awareness of PD. diagnosis than I ever did before,” says Sagmuller. “The staff really Please contact us to learn more about inpatient or taught me about the disease and outpatient rehabilitation for Parkinson’s disease. my symptoms.”

Kidstuff

April is Youth Sports Safety Month Learn how to keep your kid safe while they play a sport. To help your child get the most out of sports, follow these tips and guidelines.

Sports Safety for Little Kids (1-4 years old) Teach your child how to stay safe as they play sports. Children are often exposed to many different kinds of play at an early age. But because children develop at different rates, both physically and psychologically, follow these basic safety tips to keep everyone safe and having fun. • Encourage children to drink water before, during, and after athletic activities or play. • Adults should be present at all times to ensure a safe playing environment and the enforcement of safety rules. Sports Safety for Big Kids (5-9 years old) This is the age when organized and recreational sports can become a big part of a child’s life. To help your child get the most out of sports, follow these tips and guidelines. • For organized sports, make sure your child has a pre-participation physical exam, or PPE, by the family doctor, before playing. This can help rule out any potential medical conditions that may place your athlete at risk. • Encourage children to drink water before, during, and after athletic activities or play. • Adults should be present at all times to ensure a safe playing environment and the enforcement of safety rules. • An off-season is important. It is recommended that kids get 10 consecutive weeks of rest from any one sport every year. • Make sure your coach is trained in first aid and CPR, and understands how to prevent, recognize, and/or respond to concussions, and overuse injuries. Sports Safety for Pre-Teens (10-14 yrs. old) Pre-teens and teens benefit both physically and mentally from participating in sports. But it can be frustrating to be sidelined with an injury, especially if that injury could have been prevented. • For organized sports, make sure your child has a pre-participation physical exam, or PPE, by the family doctor, before playing. But it can be frustrating to be sidelined with an injury, especially if that injury could have been prevented. Here are a few tips to keep your kids safe so they’re not away from the sports they love. • For organized sports, make sure your child has a pre-participation physical exam, or PPE, by the family doctor, before playing. This can help rule out any potential medical conditions that may place your athlete at risk. • Encourage children to drink water before, during, and after athletic activities or play. • Warming up and stretching before play can release muscle tension and help prevent sports-related injuries, such as muscle tears or sprains. • An off-season is important. It is recommended that kids get 10 consecutive weeks of rest from any one sport every year. Info retrieved online at: www.safekids.org/safetytips/ • Make sure your coach is trained in first aid and CPR, and understands how to field_age/big-kids-5%E2%80%939-years/field_risks/ prevent, recognize and/or respond to concussions and overuse injuries. sports?gclid=CMfanreKiL0CFU4aOgod2z0AyQ Please patronize this fine sponsor of “Kidstuff:”

To your Health!

Timely, helpful, and realistic info you can apply to improve your life through better health!

April is Stress Awareness Month! Try to following these strategies:

Stress management strategy #1: Avoid unnecessary stress. Not all stress can be avoid-

ed, and it’s not healthy to avoid a situation that needs to be addressed. You may be surprised, however, by the number of stressors in your life that you can eliminate. • Learn how to say “no” – Know your limits and stick to them. • Avoid people who stress you out – If someone consistently causes stress in your life and you can’t turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely. • Take control of your environment – If the evening news makes you anxious, turn the TV off. If traffic’s got you tense, take a longer but less-traveled route. • Avoid hot-button topics – If you get upset over religion or politics, cross them off your conversation list. • Pare down your to-do list – Analyze your schedule, responsibilities, and daily tasks. If you’ve got too much on your plate, distinguish between the “shoulds” and the “musts.” Stress management strategy #2: Accept the things you can’t change. Some sources of stress are unavoidable. You can’t prevent or change stressors such as the death of a loved one, a serious illness, or a national recession. In such cases, the best way to cope with stress is to accept things as they are. • Don’t try to control the uncontrollable. Many things in life are beyond our control— particularly the behavior of other people. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control, such as the way you choose to react to problems. • Look for the upside. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. If your own poor choices contributed to a stressful situation, reflect on them and learn from your mistakes. • Share your feelings. Talk to a trusted friend face to face or make an appointment with a therapist. The simple act of expressing what you’re going through can be very beneficial, even if there’s nothing you can do to alter the stressful situation. Opening up is not a sign of weakness and it won’t make you a burden to others. Most friends will be flattered that you trust them enough to confide in them, and it’ll strengthen your bond. • Learn to forgive. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world and that people make mistakes. Let go of anger and resentments. Free yourself from negative energy by forgiving and moving on. Stress management strategy #3: Make time for fun and relaxation. Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress in your life by nurturing yourself. If you regularly make time for fun and relaxation, you’ll be in a better place to handle life’s stressors. Healthy ways to relax and recharge: Go for a walk ... Spend time in nature ... Call a good friend ... Sweat out tension with a good workout ... Write in your journal ... Take a long bath ... Light scented candles ... Savor a warm cup of coffee or tea ... Play with a pet ... Work in your garden ... Get a massage ... Curl up with a good book ... Listen to music ... Watch a comedy.

Don’t get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that you forget to take care of your own Info retrieved online at: www.helpguide.org/mental/stress_management_relief_coping.htm needs. Nurturing yourself is a necessity, not a luxury.

April is National Car Care Month!

Keep your car properly tuned for optimum performance - Regular tune-ups, maintenance, and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. Drive Smart – Remember that how you drive your car has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Lighten the Load – Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. Regularly check and replace dirty air filters - An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust, and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture that wastes gas. Have spark plugs checked and replaced if necessary - A dirty spark plug also causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Tire Checks – Optimal tire pressure for your vehicle is listed in the owner’s manual. Gas Caps – A loose, damaged, or missing gas cap means gas is evaporating, harming the environment and wasting money. Fill-Ups - When filling up your car, remember to stop when the nozzle shuts off! Topping off the gas tank can release harmful vapors into the environment. A/C Maintenance and Use – The A/C system should be inspected annually. The window is a great way to keep the car cool.

Ask Greta

Dear Greta, Although I regularly tell my boyfriend how much I appreciate him, he repeatedly reminds me of how well he treats me, often saying, “You sure have a great boyfriend” or “Your boyfriend’s so good to you” -- even when I’ve just done something super-nice for him! I’m not sure why he does this. He tells me he’s “very confident,” but that screams insecurity to me. It’s getting really annoying! - Annoyed Dear Annoyed, Fishing for compliments annoys the heck out of everyone, and does scream insecurity. You can probably get him to cut back on the incessant self-congratulation simply by telling him it grates on you and makes you feel unappreciated. The question is, do you even know the man you’re with? Chances are, he hides his real feelings out of fear that you’ll leave him if you get a glimpse of what he probably sees as his loserish true self. Unfortunately, somebody seeking inner security that much is probably never going to find it, and if your boyfriend’s happy in your relationship, he’s unlikely to feel motivated to get into the grubby business of digging inward. Relationships involve tradeoffs, and maybe being with him is worth it to you. But you may ultimately find it too hard to respect a guy who constantly has to remind you how great he is, in his humble opinion!
