February is

National Weddings Month! Things You Should Absolutely Agree Upon Before Getting Married

Now is the time to settle those debates couples absolutely must have before the wedding:

1. Does the toilet paper go over or under the roll? 2. Cats? Dogs? Both? 3. Can you eat breakfast for dinner? 4. Cold pizza: yes or no? 5. Is it acceptable to open presents as they arrive or do you have to wait for the actual birthday or holiday? 6. Should the dirty forks and knives go in the dishwasher with the handle sticking out of the utensil tray or down in the utensil tray? 7. Is it acceptable to leave dishes in the sink to “soak” overnight, or do they need to be cleaned before bed? 8. Toothpaste: cap on or cap off? 9. Again on the toothpaste: roll it from the bottom or just squeeze really hard? 10. Are towels a one-time use item or do you use the same towel until laundry day? 11. How about washcloths? 12. Road trip or flying? 13. What’s the right thread count for sheets? 14. What brand of toilet paper? 15. Mayo or Miracle Whip? 16. Pepsi or Coke? 17. Can you eat the holiday candy out of the display bowl or must it be left there for display? 18. What is YOUR definition of camping? 19. Turn the thermostat down when you go out or leave it alone? 20. At what point is a garbage bag too full to stuff more trash in it? See? So many issues, 21. How many times is it acceptable to hit the snooze button? 22. Thrift store shopping: great deals or not for you? so little time to get 23. How far in advance is it okay to plan a vacation? them straightened out 24. Restaurant reservations: necessary or too restrictive? 25. Roller coasters: love ‘em or hate ‘em? GOOD LUCK! 26. More chocolate chips, less cookie or more cookie, less chips? 27. How much orange juice must be left in the container for it to be returned to the fridge? 28. Chip clips or just roll the bag up? 29. Call the doctor or just take some medicine at home? 30. Where is the prime location for the TV remote to stay? 31. Is it okay to have a TV in the bedroom? 32. Should folded clothes be put away, or is it okay to just pull as needed from the basket of clean laundry? 33. Do you need to write a grocery list or just wait until you’re walking around the store to figure out what you need? 34. Making the bed: must-do or waste of time because you’re just going to get back in it? 35. Is it okay to shave/clip toenails in the living room? February is National Weddings Month!

A Few Updated Wedding Rules Old School: Ceremony seating is based on a bride’s side and groom’s side. New Rule: Guests can choose to sit wherever they want! It used to be that guests of the bride sat on the left side at the ceremony and guests of the groom sat on the right. Even now, plenty of your guests will go by this guideline to find their seats. But if your fiancé’s family is huge and yours is tiny, your ceremony will look a little weird if most people are seated on the right side. And at Jewish weddings, the sides are flipped anyway! (Gotta love when everyone winds up on one side at an interfaith wedding!) If you’re having ushers, ask them to direct your VIPs, parents, grandparents, and the like to prime seats toward the front of either side and instruct your other guests to sit in any open seat. No ushers? No problem. Place a sign in the area where people pick up their programs and have it read, “Sit anywhere you like!” That’ll send the message loud and clear!

Old School: You have to have a rehearsal dinner. New Rule: You can skip a rehearsal dinner. When couples lived separately before they got married and engagements were a few weeks long, not a year or more, the rehearsal dinner was the first time both sets of parents could meet. Since the mothers and fathers of the bride and groom would be responsible for introductions at the wedding the next day, they needed to see each other first! Having a rehearsal dinner is still smart when your and your fiancé’s parents aren’t acquainted, but if there’s no time or room in the budget, then it’s okay to skip it, especially if your ceremony rehearsal has to take place on a weekday or minutes before your actual wedding. It’s nice to treat out-of-towners to a welcome meal, or you can just gather your closest local friends and family for a pre-wedding dinner, but neither is required. Ask anyone who tells you otherwise if they’d like to plan and pay for it!

Old School: A Diamond Wedding Ring New Rule: You can have any stone in any setting. Diamonds are some girls’ best friends, but other brides prefer garnets, pearls, or sapphires. As long as it came with a proposal, any stone can function as an engagement ring (ditto for the setting). You don’t need to limit yourself to just one; a stacked band could act as engagement or wedding rings, or both. You don’t even need to follow the fourth-finger, left-hand custom; in Europe, many people wear a wedding band on the right hand. Any ring, given and worn with love, is a fitting symbol of something with no beginning or end.

February is National Weddings Month!

9 Wedding Splurges Here are a few of the most get-noticed totally-worth-it wedding details that’ll add serious impact to your wedding day. 1. Lighting - The right reception lighting can help camouflage sore spots like less-than-stellar windows or even shabby ballroom curtains, and highlight your favorite details (such as the incredible centerpieces or your cake table). Have a lighting designer use colored lights to punch up a drab hallway and pick a different, complementary hue for the rest of the reception area. Decorative hanging lights, lamps with patterned shades, or crystal chandeliers are also ways to transform a space from plain to standout exceptional. The Upgrade: Order a custom-made gobo light of your monogram, or project a design from your invitation over the dance floor. 2. Ceremony Decor - First impressions matter. A personalized ceremony space will make your guests feel at home immediately. If you’re having an outdoor summer wedding, hang orchid leis, colorful ribbon streamers or sun-catching glass ornaments on surrounding trees. For church nuptials, have your florist create arrangements for the pews as well as the door. (Hint: Those arrangements can all be reused at the reception on the tables, at the bar, and in the bathrooms.) The Upgrade: Ask your florist to cover a canopy with lush flowers and hanging votive candles or blossom-bedecked lanterns to really create focal points. Your guests’ jaws will drop. 3. The Entryway - Often overlooked by wedding planners, the entryway can be given a little attention to create an unexpected wow. It doesn’t take much, either; even the slightest bit of decor will personalize it. Hire your florist to create an impressive display for the escort card table. Right outside the reception hall entry, place a tall Manzanita tree decorated with hanging candles and flowers, or a grouping of mix-and-match vases filled with rich flowers of various textures to match the rest of the space. The Upgrade: Ask servers to greet guests with glasses of champagne or a signature cocktail so that they feel taken care of from the moment they stroll into the room. 4. The Photo Booth - This is one of those nuptial ideas that made its way from a totally niche concept to wedding reception standby. The reason: It works double duty. Your guests will take a whirl in the photo booth at least once in the evening (providing a perfect opportunity for mingling), and they’ll get to take home their photo booth pics as favors at the night’s end. Rent a photo booth that also provides an online gallery or a CD full of images, and that way you’ve taken care of your guest book. The Upgrade: With some rental packages, you can get projections of pictures from the photo booth. So while your guests snap shots inside the booth, the images will appear over the dance floor for everyone to see -- providing a great way to illuminate the room! 5. A Lounge Area - Give guests a place to mingle during dance breaks by having a lounge area at your reception. Look into renting couches, chairs, and other furniture that you can then stage with pillows and votive candles in your wedding colors. It’s the perfect way to involve everyone in the party even when they’re resting. The Upgrade: Really want to wow ‘em? Close off the area with curtains, draping and special lighting to create a VIP vibe. 6. Special Entertainment - Sometimes the best parts of a reception are the elements guests don’t see coming. Surprise them with a jazz trio or a Spanish guitar player. To get the party going during the cocktail hour, hire a mariachi group, a bluegrass band, or even a barbershop quartet to perform some seriously memorable melodies. The Upgrade: You’ll blow everyone away with a marching band that leads them all from the ceremony to the reception on foot (if possible), belly dancers during the cocktail hour, or even break dancers to get things started on the dance floor.

February is National Weddings Month! Clever Ways to Save on

Laugh

Your Wedding

Don’t say ‘wedding’ - When getting quotes from reception venues, bakeries, florists, and other vendors, tell the manager that you’re planning a party or an event, but leave out the “w” word. If you don’t mention the word ‘wedding,’ the price is often 25%-30% cheaper. The Invitations, Programs, and Favors Take advantage of the talents of the bridal party and other friends and family. Anything you can make yourself becomes a fun shared effort and can save a lot. Make some items do double duty. To save the cost of printed place cards, add guests’ names to the favors and set one at each place, or print the names at the top of your menu cards. Make your own favors. If you have time, whip up your grandma’s famous macaroons or make your own chocolate-covered almonds. Time it right - If you get married during the off season -- from November 1 to March 31 -- you’ll be able to get better rates for venues, photographers, officiates, bands, etc. You’ll also pay less if you steer clear of Saturday night. The Venue - Consider choosing a nontraditional venue. Rather than a dedicated wedding reception hall or country club, check out less expensive facilities, from city-run spaces like zoos and civic gardens to restaurants or more offbeat locations that have some meaning for you, from a beach to your parents’ yard. One caveat: If the space is not equipped to cater a party, calculate extra costs for bringing in tables, toilets, or even a kitchen. The Liquor - Serve signature cocktails. Since most reception sites charge for every bottle opened, even if it is for just one drink, consider offering a limited bar. Choose a signature cocktail (or a series of signature cocktails) that use one type of liquor. Then, ask to stock a few other bottles based on the wedding party’s preferences (i.e., if your dad drinks only scotch). Another option is to serve just beer, wine, and enough champagne for toasts. Good News - February

A couple was getting married, and it was only three days before the wedding. The bride calls her mother with some bad news. “Mom,” she says, “I just found out that my fiancé’s mother has bought the exact same dress as you to wear to the wedding.” The bride’s mother thinks for a minute. “Don’t worry,” she tells her daughter. “I’ll just go and buy another dress to wear to the ceremony.” “But mother,” says the bride, “that dress cost a fortune. What will you do with it? It’s such a waste not to use it.” “Who said I won’t use it?” her mother asked. “I’ll just wear it to the rehearsal dinner.”

February is National Weddings Month! some Ideas for a standout wedding... Cake: Rather than have one huge wedding cake that some people may not even notice, do something that would involve everyone and make them really enjoy the moment. Have an actual wedding cake brought out to the bride and groom’s sweetheart table, but before this, a line of servers, dressed in tuxedos and wearing crisp white gloves, come marching out in a single file carrying mini versions of the wedding cake to each table with sparklers. It’s a fantastic sight, seeing the servers march out in line with the beautiful show of lights. Everyone will feel honored and really enjoy the display and treat. Photo seating cards: This may be easier to do with a smaller wedding, but with enough time, instead of names on seating cards, try to get a photo of each guest and paste onto the seating card. With Facebook, you can now even get photos of the dates that your single friends are bringing! Everyone loves to see themselves and this will really blow them away. Take it to go! Rather than cluttering up your reception tables, or worse yet, having your guest forget their wedding favor, have the valet staff put favors in their cars for a nice surprise at the end of the night. A brown bag with bagels and cream cheese wishing them a happy breakfast, or just truffles with a goodnight note hanging from the rear view mirror is a very thoughtful touch. Pre-ceremony Cocktails: Your guests won’t be expecting any drinks until the reception, so give them a pleasant surprise by setting up a table of light beverages on the way into the ceremony. Just don’t serve anything too strong -- think: mimosas or fruit-infused iced teas they can sip before taking their seats (and don’t forget to have non-alcoholic versions too!). Have your caterer or ushers collect any stray glasses to make sure the space is tidy before the processional begins.

Thoughts on Love... Love is a verb as well as a noun. Love means a smile and never a frown. Love is to do and not just to feel. For unless you express it, love is never real. We come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing the imperfect person perfectly. How to fall in love: Fall but don’t stumble, be consistent but not too persistent, share and never be unfair, understand and try not to demand, and hurt but never keep the pain. Love is true when you don’t see eye to eye, but can still walk hand in hand. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller Info retrieved online at: www.picture-thoughts.com/Love_thoughts.html

March is Personal Wellness Blood Screening Month!

By Loretta Coltrane

Remember the old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” Maintaining or improving your overall health with wellness blood screening, along with following the advice of your doctor, can help you stay healthy and save you money. Unlike most medical routine blood tests, annual wellness blood screenings test for important markers of disease risk to assess overall state of health, and are one of the most proven methods for early detection and prevention of disease. Serious medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, liver disease, thyroid disease, and others can often go undetected for years without causing noticeable symptoms. Panel tests performed as part of a comprehensive wellness profile should include the following: • Anemia – Red blood indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW), hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, white blood cell count, serum iron. • Coronary Disease – cholesterol, HDL, LDL, cholesterol/HDL risk ratio, triglycerides. • Liver Disease – albumin, globulin, albumin/ globulin ratio, GGT, AST, ALT, LD, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase. • Kidney Disease – blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, BUN/creatinine ratio • Glucose –diabetes • Other: calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, potassium. Sodium, uric acid, TIBC, transferring saturation. Optional tests include prostate specific antigen (PSA) for male prostate cancer detection, thyroid function TSH, Vitamin D (deficiency can affect bones), hemoglobin A1C (diabetes) and Insure colon rectal kit (colon cancer detection).

Take Charge of your health and wellness today!

Editor’s Note: The Rotary Club of Lock Haven is sponsoring a Community Wellness Blood Screening in our area on March 1 and March 8, 2014. See adjacent ad. 24

Here are a few points to keep in mind when choosing someone to prepare your return: • Check the person’s qualifications. Ask if the preparer is affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with continuing education and resources, and holds them to a code of ethics. New regulations require all paid tax return preparers, including attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents to have a Preparer Tax Identification #. • Check on the preparer’s history. Check to see if the preparer has a questionable history with the BBB, and check for any disciplinary actions and licensure status through the state boards of accountancy for certified public accountants; the state bar associations for attorneys; and the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility for enrolled agents. • Find out about their service fees. Avoid preparers who base their fee on a percentage of your refund or those who claim they can obtain larger refunds than other preparers. • Make sure the tax preparer is accessible. Make sure you will be able to contact the tax preparer after the return has been filed, even after the April due date, in case questions arise. • Provide all records and receipts needed to prepare your return. Most reputable preparers will ask to see your records and receipts and will ask you multiple questions to determine your total income and your qualifications for expenses, deductions, and other items. • Never sign a blank return. Avoid preparers that ask you to sign a blank tax form. • Review the entire return before signing it. Before you sign your tax return, review it, and ask questions. Be sure you understand everything and are comfortable with the accuracy of the return before you sign it. • Make sure the preparer signs the form and includes their PTIN. A paid preparer must sign the return and include their PTIN as required by law. The preparer must also give you a copy of the return.

Children Waiting For A Home...

David is a friendly 11-year-old with a brilliant smile that can light up a room. Very personable, he has a great sense of humor and gets along well with adults. Among his many interests are testing his skills at video games, riding his bike, watching TV, reading books, and going to the library. In school, he receives special education services, and the small class size and individual attention are helping him meet his academic goals. He frequently volunteers to read in class. Math is his favorite subject. David has experienced multiple losses and disappointments. He needs a family that is empathetic to his experiences. and motivated to help him reach his potential. He would thrive in a home where he would receive individual attention. He should be the only child in the family.

David

Tanasia, 16, is soft-spoken and articulate. Social, playful, and loving, she easily makes friends, and enjoys engaging in conversations. Musically talented, she loves to play the piano and violin, and sings in her church choir. She is also interested in technology, including computers and electronics. Tanasia had the opportunity to travel to Paris, France and still talks about the wonderful trip and the excitement of traveling abroad. She hopes one day to return. In school, she is in mainstream classes and also benefits from special education services. Tanasia has had much chaos in her life. Therapy is helping her deal with issues arising from the many separations, losses, and traumas she has experienced, and she is making significant progress.

Tanasia

Samira is a delightful 12-year-old with sparkling brown eyes. Her social worker describes her as an outgoing young girl who enjoys a variety of activities, including reading, writing, and creating arts and crafts. Samira also likes swimming and outdoor activities. When she is inside, she spends many happy hours playing card games and solving Suduko puzzles. Like many girls her age, Samira’s favorite pastimes include shopping, getting her hair and nails done, and spending time with her many friends. She looks forward to going to school, where she earns good grades. She is working hard to improve her math skills. Samira wants very much to be adopted, and have a home of her own. She would thrive in an environment where she receives love, attention, support, and motivation.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

“The Touch of Love”

February is the month of love! According to CNN, Americans spend an average of $130.97 on cards, flowers and candy, showing love and kindness. How can we think of love without thinking of God, the Author of Love? God showed His love through His Son Jesus (John 3:16) and Jesus expressed this love by His sacrifice on Calvary. (Romans 5:8). In Mark 1:40-42, we read the story of Jesus healing a man of leprosy. “A man with leprosy came to Him and begged Him on his knees, ’If you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. ’I am willing.’ He said. ’Be clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.” Leprosy is not a pretty sight. The leper’s skin swells and ulcerates and has a foul-smelling odor. Lepers often lose fingers, toes, ears, and noses. Whenever a leper came out in the open he had to cry “Unclean! Unclean!” to warn people as leprosy was very contagious. It brought anguish at all levels: physical, mental, social, and religious. Leprosy serves as an illustration of sin, as it was humanly incurable. Only Jesus could bring the cure! It’s easy to understand Jesus healing the man of his leprosy. But why did He reach out and touch him? Jesus could say the word, and the man would be healed, yet He chose to touch the leper, which according the law made Him unclean! That didn’t stop Jesus. Why? Jesus was giving him a gift he would never forget. There is something very special about human touch that communicates friendship, concern, and love. When Jesus touched the leper, it was a very emotional and moving moment that the leper would remember forever. Doctors will tell you that the human touch can bring about healing because it increases the will to live. It expresses love and concern when words cannot be spoken or understood. Love keeps us going. When going seems impossible, love finds a way! People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. Jesus was filled with love and compassion, and He reached out and touched. He says to us to go and do likewise! Where help is just around the corner...

P.E.A.K. Students at CMHS

P.E.A.K. stands for Positive attitude, Encouraging others, Academics, and Kindness. Every other week, 10 teachers are randomly selected to nominate one students who exemplifies these qualities. Nominated students receive rewards for a week long period that includes: a free pass to all CMHS athletic events, a pass to get to the front of the lunch line, the ability to come into school at 9:00 on an extended homeroom day, and a preferred parking spot. The purpose of P.E.A.K. is to recognize and reward students making a positive contribution to Central Mountain High School.

Congratulations to last month’s P.E.A.K. Students!

January P.E.A.K. Students:

Melissa Dolley, Lauren Darby, Allison Nicholas, Sarah Reeder, Kelsey Lange, Ricky Kessinger, Mackenzie Dugan, Chadd Miller, Samantha Carlson, Michael Probst, and Mr. Len Ruteki Melissa Dolley Melissa Dolley is a senior at Central Mountain. She enjoys playing video games and cooking. Her favorite class is Culinary Arts. Her Culinary Arts teacher, Daci Killinger, nominated Melissa for PEAK because, “Melissa works hard all the time. I can tell that she genuinely cares about doing well in the class.” Lauren Darby Junior Lauren Darby was nominated by Mrs. Lynzee Sox. Darby was nominated because, “She is in several of my classes. Lauren works hard to successfully complete assignments, she asks many questions, and goes above and beyond any given assignment. Lauren also holds information for friends to catch them up if they are absent and is always polite. She works many weeknights after school, and always has a smile during the day.” Darby works at McDonald’s, and enjoys sleeping in her spare time! Alison Nicholas Freshman Alison Nicholas enjoys riding horses and reading. She likes to go to cow sales and spend time browsing Facebook. Nicholas was nominated for PEAK by her Science teacher, Mrs. Temons, who explained, “Alison is a hard worker who is willing to help other students whenever they need it - she is a fantastic peer tutor. She is also sweet and cheerful - and you just can’t have too much of that any day after lunch :) I believe she exemplifies what it means to be a PEAK student.” Sarah Reeder Sarah Reeder was nominated for PEAK by Mr. Scott Baker. Baker explained that, “Sarah is an exceptionally academic student who is kind, courteous and is a leader in the classroom.” Reeder has older twin brothers and enjoys playing all sports, but mostly softball. Kelsey Lange Junior Kelsey Lange was nominated by English teacher Mrs. Janarella. Lange was nominated because, “She quietly does her work daily and is helpful to others in peer editing groups. She is very polite to me and the other students in class.” 34

January P.E.A.K. Students continued... Ricky Kessinger Ricky Kessinger comes from a fun family, where he has a brother and a sister, as well as two pugs. He enjoys drawing and making gaming YouTube videos. Kessinger was nominated for PEAK, for the second time, by Mrs. Beth Keiser, who says, “Ricky embodies ALL of the qualities of a P.E.A.K student. He is kind to a fault - to EVERYONE. Always wishes our 1st period class, “Good Morning,” or “Happy Wednesday - Hump Day,” or “Merry Christmas,” etc. When he sees I am busy helping another student he provides assistance to students who are waiting for help. He helps ANYONE who appears to need assistance. He is a great teacher himself, he makes me smile when I hear him repeating to a classmate instructions that I have given earlier to Ricky. He takes great pride in his work, and is always striving to improve himself and do his best. He WANTS to learn!!” Mackenzie Dugan Mackenzie Dugan was nominated by secretary Lindsay Johnson. Johnson nominated Dugan because, “She has good grades. Also, I’ve gotten to talk to her a few times in the office and she is always very cordial and polite. She is easy to talk to and always inquires about Donna and I when she comes in. Her niceness is sincere and not obligatory. She has always been upbeat and positive in our conversations and interactions.” Dugan enjoys going to the beach and spending time with all of her brothers and sisters. Chadd Miller Chadd Miller is a black belt in Karate and teaches classes to younger students. He is on both the cross country and track teams and is a member of his youth group. He was nominated for PEAK by his French teacher, Mrs. Garaitonandia. She nominated Miller because of how hard he works in class. Samantha Carlson Samantha Carlson was selected for PEAK by her math teacher, Mrs. Eggler. Eggler explained, “She always works hard during class. She helps other students when they ask her for help. Also, she is very polite and pleasant.” Carlson plays volleyball and dances after school. She also enjoys family dinners with her younger brother and sister. Michael Probst Senior Michael Probst was nominated for PEAK by his Yearbook Adviser, Mrs. Moore. Probst was nominated because, “Michael is willing to stay after school to finish work that has not been completed by his classmates. He helps others out in class whenever needed. He has successfully organized and run three fundraisers already this year and has more planned. He is positive, he is upbeat, and he is a hard worker.” Probst enjoys scuba diving and has his open water diving certification. He plays football and wrestles. Mr. Len Ruteki PEAK teacher Shan Packer is the co-adviser of the CMHS Skills USA club. He enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, family socials, and riding his 4-wheelers and motorcycle. He was nominated by Mr. Scott Owens, CTE Director, because, “Mr. Packer is always kind to everyone, places students first and takes a genuine interest in all students and their well-being.”

Keep up the good work!

DR. DAVE’S Top 10 DVD’s 1) Despicable Me 2 Again, for the kids! - Steve Carell is a hoot as Gru; and Kristen Wiig matches him as love interest Lucy...the plot? Something about spies and evil superheroes. Meh. But the feelings this animated flick engender are the real draw here...Buy it! 2) The Lone Ranger Proof that Johnny Depp can star in a lousy film. Avoid it! 3) Blue Jasmine Cate Blanchett is extraodinary in a film that continues Woody Allen’s late career surge (see Match Point, Midnight in Paris and Vicky Cristina Barcelona - please!). Superb adult entertainment...Rent it! 4) Captain Phillips Tom Hanks is great (as usual), but this film really belongs to unknown Barkhad Abdi, who plays the leader of the pirates who take over his ship. A true life tale that brings the action....Rent it! 5) Lee Daniels’ The Butler Forest Whitaker serves eight presidents over 30 years and we watch as the events that unfold change his life - and that of his family. Yes, Oprah is terrific - but why does the pacing remind me of Driving Miss Daisy? Worth seeing for the histroric recreations alone...Rent it! 38

Better Times

After years of bashing through their material with electric instruments, Shoebox Letters has softened their sound - and the result is dramatic. Songwriter Dennis Winslow has always had something to say, but now the words are accompanied by acoustic guitar, mandolin, and steel guitar, which allows the high harmonies to ride over the instrumentation.

Tracks like “This Is Not The Way” and the title track, “Better Times” best show this transition. It’s a more mature approach and finally allows this talented band to blossom.

Success Story... From Hip to Heart Rehab: When Independence Matters Most

“I’m an independent man, and I want to stay that way,” says Russell Trego, Jr., 58, of the Centre Region. That is a common sentiment among many people facing rehabilitation after an injury, illness, or surgery. Russell recently fell at home and broke his hip, and when it was time for rehabilitation, he chose HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Pleasant Gap. In addition to a broken hip, Russell has a heart failure diagnosis. “At HealthSouth, when a patient is admitted for rehabilitation, and that patient has a heart failure diagnosis, they get the benefit of our Heart Failure Program,” says Amy Adams, Russell’s case manager. HealthSouth’s Heart Failure Program has earned the Joint Commission’s DiseaseSpecific Care Certification. The program includes classes that teach patients about managing fluid intake and medications, and the importance of daily weight monitoring. “I’m learning how to manage my heart failure diagnosis when I go home,” says Russell. “I want to be able to take care of myself again.” Nurses educate patients about daily weights and what weight gains to report, foods to avoid, the name of their water pill, and symptoms to share with their health care providers. Case managers ensure that a heart failure patient has a follow-up appointment with their primary care doctor. “We call the patient four days after discharge, and again 30 days after discharge,” says Adams. “That follow-up after the patient is discharged helps to prevent re-admission to the hospital.” Russell’s goals include walking again, living independently at home, and successfully monitoring his heart failure diagnosis. “My dad always told me, ‘No is not in your vocabulary,’ so I always try my best.” HealthSouth Nurse Jackie Tepsic, LPN, who cared for Russell, adds, “Russell’s positive attitude is what makes him a great candidate for rehab. He never Physical Therapy Assistant Steve says ‘no’ and is willing try anything to get better. Uberti (left) supports patient Russell Trego, Jr. as they walk That’s what helps a patient like Russell go home in the physical therapy gym at again.” HealthSouth Nittany Valley HealthSouth’s Heart Failure Program includes a Hospital. Russell monthly support group, which is open to the public Rehabilitation is getting rehabilitation for his and held on the fourth Monday of every month at hip, and is also in HealthSouth’s 4 pm at HealthSouth. Kidstuff Tooth tips

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

Tooth decay - How a pediatric dentist treats tooth decay depends on what he or she finds. Fillings may be needed to repair mild decay. Severe decay may require a crown, root canal, or removal of the tooth. Tooth decay and cavities can be avoided if children receive regular dental checkups beginning at age 1, a healthy diet and daily brushing and flossing. Getting children to brush - “Two” is the magic number when it comes to healthy teeth. Dentists recommend brushing a minimum of twice a day – after breakfast and just before bedtime – for at least two minutes. Since that can be a very long time for children, come up with fun ways to keep them going: Pick a song that’s about two minutes long and sing it during toothbrush time. Or, play two minutes of a tune from the radio or a child’s favorite CD. Place a timer in the bathroom. Get a brush that lights up for two minutes. Sealants - Sealants are thin plastic coatings that protect teeth from decay. They’re applied to the grooves on the back teeth to keep out germs and food particles. It’s best to apply sealants soon after the first permanent molars come up and before decay starts to occur – at about age 5 or 6. Second permanent molars emerge at about age 12 and these teeth should receive sealants, too. The process is easy. Sealants can last several years at a time, and can be re-applied, if necessary. Dental appointments - The earlier children begin going to the dentist, the more comfortable they’ll be with exams throughout their life. Schedule their first appointment when they turn 1. Children can zero in on a parent’s fears, so the less you say the better. If you fuss or tell children how brave they are, they may think something scary will happen. Mention that dentists and dental assistants like children and help them keep their teeth healthy. Tooth injuries - Two injuries require an immediate trip to a pediatric dentist. If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it under warm water, gently push it back in the socket and hold it there or place it in a cup of milk or cool water. Remember to bring the tooth with you! Don’t scrub the tooth or remove attached tissue. For a broken tooth, gently clean the injured area with warm water. Place cold compresses on the face to decrease swelling. Flossing helps teeth and gums - By age 2, daily flossing is preferred. It removes food and plaque from between the teeth. Plaque is the sticky yellow substance that forms on teeth after eating things like bread, raisins, cookies, and cake, and drinking milk or soda. Bacteria grows on the plaque and forms an acid that leads to tooth decay. It can get past the gums, damage the bone and destroy the root. To floss your child’s teeth, wrap the floss around your fingers and glide it between the teeth in a C-shaped motion. Be gentle! Forcing the floss between teeth can make the gums bleed, which can scare children into thinking that flossing hurts (it shouldn’t). To prevent bacteria from spreading in the mouth, use a new section of floss each time you move between two teeth. Thumb sucking - Most children outgrow thumb sucking by age 5. If it continues when permanent teeth start coming in, dental or speech problems may occur. Children can develop teeth that stick out or don’t close properly or a lisp. Ask your pediatric dentist for advice. Breaking this habit requires patience, love, and encouragement from parents and caregivers. Sippy cups and bottles - Children and parents love sippy cups and bottles because they are familiar and because there are no spills! We recommend that children are weaned from the sippy cup and bottle by age 1. If your child uses either after that age, be sure that it doesn’t contain juice, soda, or other sweet liquids. A cup or bottle filled with sugary beverages encourages their Info retrieved online at: http://thecenterforpediatricdentistry. use and greatly increases the risk for cavities. com/for-parents-and-patients/tooth-tips/ Please patronize this fine sponsor of “Kidstuff:”

February is National Senior Independence Month!

Take this opportunity to evaluate your current living situation; notice the strengths and weaknesses in your daily routine and make adjustments for a better lifestyle. Ask yourself: What holds you back? What could make daily living easier? Minor adjustments can make a huge difference. Home Safety Tips Use these techniques to make your home a place you can live safely and independently. • Brighten Up - Check that every room is well lit, and make any lighting replacements where needed. Installing night-lights throughout the house— especially in dark corners and along staircases—can help improve nighttime visibility and prevent trips and falls over unseen objects. • Clear Clutter - Keep floors and walkways clear of unnecessary items, such as clothes, books, papers, and trash. An alteration as simple as shifting the furniture can be valuable for those who may have balance or vision problems. Move any furniture, wiring, or other obstructions, and make sure all pathways are clear enough to move freely without fear of harm. • Get a Grip - Install grab bars and handrails in the restrooms near the shower, bathtub, and toilet. Using non-slip mats and placing double-sided tape under rugs can also help minimize slips. • Open Access - Everything should be easily accessible, including the refrigerator, cabinets, drawers, doors, and shelving. Also, place items on the lower levels of shelves for easier reach. Stay Active to Avoid Accidents Did you know that daily exercise could help reduce the risk of falls? In fact, being inactive is one of the major risk factors of falls in older adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Don’t let fear of injury keep you from engaging in daily exercise. With your physician’s approval, take part in these activities to help make your fall prevention power greater: • Flowing and stretching exercises, such as T’ai Chi and yoga, are known to help restore balance and joint flexibility. • Mild strength training, with and without weights, can help strengthen your muscles, joints and bones, making it less likely that you will fall or become injured from a fall. • Walking is one of the easiest exercises you can do, and it comes with many benefits, including improved balance, strength, and endurance. Ways to Celebrate Senior Independence! Tip: Have a Family Dinner- Use the opportunity to share old photos and stories. Tip: Have a Movie Night - Invite friends and family over once a week or month for a movie night. Take turns choosing movies and have everyone bring a snack to enjoy! Tip: Join an Active Adults Fitness Class at Local YMCA - Get exercise and share time with friends. Tip: Take a Class - Learn something new! Take a class to meet other people, all the while learning something new. Try a pottery, computer, photography, or painting class! Battle of The Sexes Dear Battle of the Sexes: I’ve been dating this guy for three months now and I just wonder when the right time would be to tell him that I can’t stand the cologne he wears on a daily basis. I don’t understand why men pour it on themselves. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but he stinks! I believe men should be subtle with their cologne - or go all-natural -- but with deodorant! - All Smelled Out, Mill Hall

Dear Battle of the Sexes: My best friend of the past 10 years is a female. We have developed an unbelievably unusual relationship. We tell each other everything, but never get intimate with each other. But lately, I have been having different feelings toward her and just want to take the relationship further, but do not want to ruin our friendship. I’m so afraid of her not reciprocating and ending everything, but at the same time...could she be the one after all these years?? - Going Crazy, South Williamsport Send your responses to these letters, or mail in your own gripes to: “Good News” P.O. Ask Greta

“chocolate”

use answers from page 61!

Dear Greta, I’m a decent-looking guy with unfortunate hair. It’s thinning rapidly and receding to the back of my skull, and topical treatments barely made a difference. I’m now thinking of shaving my whole head, but I’m wondering what women think. Considering my circumstances, what’s my best option? - Follicular Rebellion Dear Follicular Rebellion, Going bald isn’t all bad. If you’re like a lot of men, every time you lose a hair off your head, you’re a hair closer to growing a ponytail out your nose. Although women generally prefer men with hair on their head, there’s a line that gets crossed, and that’s when there’s a desperate little patch on top (a la Prince William) that calls to mind a pointless attempt to grow a vegetable garden in arid countryside. Doing that doesn’t make you look like you have hair; it makes you look like you have hair issues. Shaving your head, on the other hand, projects confidence, suggesting that you’re comfortable enough with your face and yourself to put them out there unadorned. If you go the head-shaving route, consider adding facial hair to make it look like there’s still a little lawn on the property, balancing out the clearing on top. You could try a few styles, take pix, and poll the ladies. Who knows? It might be just the way to meet a woman who longs to rub the softness of your shaved bald head!

“Celebrate what you want to see more of.”

-Tom Peters
