AsmembersoftheGoodFoodCo-op’sSustainabilityCommittee,werecently touredtheRecyclingCenter.Lexington’sDivisionofWasteManagementnotonly overseestherecyclingfacility,butalsoanelectronicrecyclingfacility,amanaged transferstation,acompostingoperation,andpermitcompliancefortwoclosed landfillsItprovidescollectionservicestoover98,000residentsandover4,000 businesseseachweek.
Over1millioncontainersareservicedeachweekThedivisioncollectslandfill-bound wastefromresidents’greenrollcarts.Recyclingcollectionispickedupfromthe bluerollcartsandyardwasteiscollectedfromthegrayrollcarts.Lexington residentsarefortunatetohavetheseservicesavailabletothem!Curbsiderecycling collectioninLexingtonstartedin198978,500outof98,000totaleligibleresidents subscribetothecitycurbsiderecyclingcollection.Inaddition,547recycling dumpstersareservicedtwiceaweekfrommultifamilyunits,officebuildings,and commercialandindustrialunitsLexingtonallowsitemstobecomingled,meaning recyclableitemscanallbeplacedinyourbluerollcart,nosortingisneededThe recyclingcenterhasasystemthatseparatestheseitemsandpreparesthemtobe soldtovariousvendorsforrepurposing.
Avisittothedivision’srecyclingcenterisamustforanyresidentcuriousabout howtheitemsinyourbluerollcartareprocessed.Ifyouarefortunateenoughto attendatour,takeabagofquestions(examplesofitemsyouareunsurecanbe recycled)Lexington’srecyclingcenteropenedin1992andistheonlymunicipally ownedandoperatedfacilityofitskindinthestateandsurroundingregion.The facilityhasgonethroughmanyupgradessinceitsopening.
TheoldBooegrafsystemwasreplacedwithaMachinexsingle-streamsystemin 2010.Thecurrentsingle-streamsystemsortsourcardboardfirst.Didyouknowthat cardboardisthemostrecycleditemsinceCovidinspiredconsumerstoshoponline?
Opticalsortersaidintheplasticssortingprocess.Therecyclingcenterhasmade severalupgradestoeliminatehandsortingandremoveanymaterialsthatdonot meetthestringentspecificationsrequiredbythemarketsthatpurchasethese materialsforrepurposingForexample,aglassbreakerwasaddedin2021to removeglassearlierintheprocess.Thisadditionreduceddowntimeandwearand tearontheequipment.
Despitetheadvancesinthesortingprocess,workersstillstandalongtheconveyor systems,removingunacceptableitems–dangerouswork.Theymayberequiredto climbinsideofthesystemstoremoveitemsthatbecomeensnarledinthe equipment.Onereasontobevigilantinplacingthecorrectitemsinyourblueroll cart!
Workersareneededontherecyclinglinesprimarilydueto“wish-cycling”“Wishcycling”isatermusedtodescriberecyclingofmaterialsthatresidentsthinkshould berecyclable.Duringourtour,weheardaboutmanyitemsthatare“wish-cycled”–winchstraps,VHStapes,plasticbags,deadanimals,andgardenhosestonamea fewThistypeofrecyclingisabigprobleminLexingtonOver30%ofwhatweput intherecyclingbiniswaste.Remember,thematerialrecoveredfromtherecycling processisnotsentabroadfordisposal.Onlythematerialsthatcanbesortedand soldtovendorsforrepurposingareaccepted
Wemeanwellwhenweputanitemintherecyclecartthinkingsurelyitis recyclableHowever,unacceptablematerialsresultindangerousconditionsfor workers,lostrevenue,andwastedenergyinprocessingthematerialDon’tbea “wish-cycler”.Usethefollowingtipstorecycleproperly.Forexample,thetypeof glassthatcanberecycledisthetypethatismadeforlongtermfoodstoragesuch asjarsusedforpickles,olives,etcGlasscupsandPyrexarenotacceptableBreak downcardboardifitislargeanddon’trecyclecardboardthatiscontaminatedwith grease.Number1and2plasticbottles,jugs,jarsareacceptable.Capscanbeleft on.Loosebottlecapssuchasonsodaandbeerbottlescannotbesortedand shouldbethrowninthetrashIfthecapissmallerthanaPost-itNote,throwitout Freezerboxesarenowacceptable.Metalcans,tins,andlidsshouldbeemptyandif possiblerinsed.Papermaterialneedstopasstheteartest.Booksareokbutthe coversshouldberemovedGiftwrap,tissuepaper,wipes,receiptpaper,and soiledpaperarenotacceptable.IfapieceofpaperissmallerthanaPost-itNote, itcannotberecycled.OtherunacceptablematerialsincludeStyrofoamandplastic clamshellcontainers.CartonscannowberecycledduetofundingfromtheCarton CouncilofNorthAmericathatresultedintheabilitytoprocesscartonssuchas thoseusedformilk,soupandorangejuiceThiscouncilrepresentsseveralfood manufacturersthatcollaboratedtocreatecontainersthatcouldberecycled.We needmoreofthistypeofcollaboration!
Therecyclingcenterimprovesthesortingandsellingprocesswhenpossible,so checkbackperiodicallytofindoutifnewitemshavebeenaddedtotheacceptable listLookfornumber5plasticstobeaddednextyear!Remember,whenindoubt, throwitoutItisbesttorecycleproperlyYouwillmaketheworkers’jobssafer,the sortingprocessmoreefficient,andalsolesscostly.And,youwillbereducingthe amountofwasteinourlandfills!
AreyouaFayetteCountyresidentthatdoesnotreceivepickupservices?Notall FayetteCountyresidentshaverecyclingservicesavailabletothemthroughthecity andmayhavetopayaprivatehaulerfortheseservices.Inordertoprovidean optiontotheseresidents,thereare15locationsinFayetteCountywhereresidents candropoffcommingledrecyclablematerialatnocost,manyavailable24hoursa day,7daysaweek
Inadditiontorecyclingservices,Lexington’swastemanagementdivisionprovides collectionofyardwastematerialThisyardwastematerialismovedtothe compostingoperationoffHaleyPikewhereitisturnedintonutrient-richmulch materialaftera6-monthcompostingprocess.Thecityconductsmulchgiveaway eventsfromtime-to-time,providingfreemulchforresidentstouseintheir landscapingInaddition,residentscandropoffupto2loadsofyardwasteatthe HaleyPikeWasteManagementFacilityfreeofcharge,onceamonth.
ThecityhasseveralotherlesserknownrecyclingoptionsDropoffofelectronicsat theElectronicsRecyclingCenteronVersaillesRoadisfreetoFayetteCounty residents.Thecenteracceptsnumerousitems,suchasTVs,computers,cell phones,andholidaylights.
Lexington’sWasteManagementDivision,alongwiththeUniversityofKentucky ExtensionOffice,BluegrassGreensource,andSeedleafconductcomposting workshopsperiodicallyTheseworkshopsteachresidentshowtoturntheirfood scrapsintonutrient-richsoilforuseintheirgardensandlandscapesAnadded benefitisthatfoodwastegoingtothelandfillisreduced.Foodwasteisthemost prevalentiteminthewastestreamalongwithcompostablepaper.Iftheseitems werediverted,wecouldpreventroughly100,000tonsfromgoingtothelandfill
Apapershredeventisofferedtwiceayear.Yoursensitivematerialwillbekept secureandtheresultingrecycledmaterialwillbeusedtomakelow-gradepaper productsYoucanalsorecycletiresbytakingthemtothetirecollectioneventthat occursevery3years.Tirescollectedatthiseventarerecycledintorubberproducts suchascarparts,tennisshoesandparkingbumpers.
