Set to Make a Spectacular Comeback

As the countdown begins, the Seymour Gift is set to make its grand return for the first time in over two decades, with just under a month until the thrilling event takes place on December 14 at Kings Park. The Seymour Running Club (SRC) has been tirelessly preparing for what promises to be a remarkable day of track athletics, aiming to establish the Gift as a marquee event on the Victorian Athletic League (VAL) calendar.
The event is expected to host around 500 athletes, ranging from Under 18s to Masters runners (45+), showcasing an impressive range of talent across age groups. Athletes registered with the VAL are eligible to compete, ensuring high participation levels and a spirited competition.
Blair Collins, the President of the SRC, expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming event, stating, "We’re incredibly excited about the Gift returning and we can see it being a major boost for the town."
With over 100 Foundation Members already joining the club, there is a palpable buzz as local businesses and community members rally to support the event. The major sponsor, the Seymour Club, along with several sponsors for various races and heats, reflects the commitment of the community to make this event a success.
In addition to the thrilling athletic competition, the event will feature several community groups supporting various services.
The Seymour Football Netball Club will manage the bar facilities, while the Eastern Hill Cricket Club will run a BBQ and Seymour Little Athletics will oversee the canteen. For those wishing to indulge in luxury, the SRC is offering a corporate hospitality area with exquisite views of the action, complemented by an afternoon of food and beverages.
To ensure the safety of all participants and attendees, an emergency management plan has been approved by the Mitchell Shire Council, reflecting the committee's dedication to a secure environment during the event.
Spectators can look forward to some of the most exciting races of the day, including the DB Results Men’s Gift and the Microenterprise Launchpad Women’s Gift. Additionally, Australian Trenching & Excavations sponsors what is anticipated to be the richest Masters race in the world at this event, offering a $3,500 prize pool for the 300m race.

Letter to the EditorReturning to Parliament
It was wonderful to return to Parliament and address issues that matter deeply to our community.
Alongside colleagues who have recently welcomed new babies, we are in the process of establishing a crèche at Parliament, which we expect to be ready for sittings in 2025.
We shouldn’t have to choose between serving as MPs and being mothers. This crèche will provide muchneeded support, enabling us to be present both for our families and for the communities we represent. This is especially vital for regional MPs, who often spend hours away from home during sitting weeks.
I’m incredibly grateful that this support will be available next year.
It’s been heartening to see party politics put aside to ensure effective resources and support for women in Parliament.
Unfortunately, access to childcare is an issue that impacts so many regional families and I am continuing to work hard to ensure our towns are given the capacity to deliver this for all families.
I’m deeply thankful for my husband and for the broader community, who have been so supportive, making it possible for me to fulfill this role while raising a young family.
If support like on-site crèches were available, more women would be empowered to stand for all levels of government, knowing they could balance family responsibilities with public service.

Mitchell Community Energy public meeting
A lot of people find the energy world quite confusing. Older people remember when there was only one organisation that was responsible for the generation of electricity (all down in the LaTrobe valley). That same organisation built and operated the huge transmission towers all across the state, and it also delivered the power to all of our homes and businesses. That was the State Electricity Commission (SEC). Now we have dozens of companies, mostly foreign companies, generating our electricity, others operate the transmission lines, and a host of other private businesses that buy the electricity and sell it to our homes and businesses all at higher and different rates and on different conditions. It’s all too confusing for most of us and we just pay our bills as they come in. But things are moving fast in the energy world and it’s important to keep up. What’s on offer and what you are paying to these various companies may not be the best deal for you. And governments are providing more and more rebates and assistance that can help you meet the high cost of electricity. Gas is getting too expensive for many people and there are interesting opportunities now to switch to cheaper and cleaner power. And the government has re-established the SEC and it also provides more opportunities. It’s certainly worth investigating this complex situation – big savings can be made. For example, Mitchell Community Energy helped Karingal save about $30,000 per year on power bills.
To provide our local community with useful information in this confusing field, Mitchell Community Energy will host a public meeting on Monday evening 25 November. Speakers will be: Tim Forcey, national expert on home electrification and author of high selling book “My Efficient Electric Home Handbook”. Tim Forcey is a chemical engineer who spent 30 years working in the fossil fuel industry. Being aware of the impact of fossil fuels on climate he volunteered at organisations like Renew and Beyond Zero Emissions. He did some research at Melbourne University that included a pumped hydro electric scheme that Mitchell Community Energy proposed. He assisted government and local council funded programs by visiting people’s homes to advise on upgrades and he now runs a business advising on how to improve the comfort and reduce the energy bills of people in their own homes.
Mr Lane Crockett, General Manager (Assets) SEC, will speak on the SEC’s programs and opportunities for the community they present.
A Mitchell Shire Council officer will talk about the Solar Savers Program, an initiative of the Goulburn Murray Councils Alliance which aims to make it easy for households and businesses to electrify their premises. A small induction stove and other devices will be on display.
This is an important opportunity to get expert advice on the rapidly changing energy world and how you can take part in it to save money – and also help save the planet.
The meeting will be held at 7.30 pm on 25 November at the Flood Recovery Centre – and it’s free!

The SRC is encouraging local businesses and community members to get involved by signing up for Foundation Memberships, which include free entry to the event, a SRC cap, and acknowledgment in the race program.
The club is ramping up its promotional efforts across various media channels, and the excitement surrounding the event continues to grow, becoming a hot topic among VAL events this year. The organising committee, composed of 13 dedicated locals, is determined to ensure the Seymour Gift becomes a sustainable, annual highlight on the athletic calendar.
With athletes expected from all over the
state, alongside many local runners from the Kelfit training squad, the Seymour Gift promises to be an unforgettable day of athletics. As we await the festivities, Mr. Collins invites everyone to book their spot and join in on the celebration.
"We can’t wait to see you all there," he said, summing up the eagerness and anticipation that this landmark event has generated in the community.
Mark your calendars and prepare for a spectacular day at Kings Park as the Seymour Gift makes its highly anticipated return!

A Fresh Approach to Recycling: Strathbogie Shire's New Purple Bin for Glass
Strathbogie Shire Council is excited to announce the launch of a new purple glass recycling bin for households, set to roll out in May 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve local recycling practices, with collections for the new bin scheduled to begin in July 2025.
The rollout will occur over several weeks to ensure that every eligible household across the Shire receives their new purple bin. Once in place, the glass recycling bins will be collected every four weeks.
Council’s waste data reveals that glass bottles and jars make up 17 percent of the community's mixed recycling. However, when glass is broken and mixed with other materials like cardboard, paper, and plastic, it becomes more challenging to recycle. By separating glass bottles and jars into their own bins, the materials can be more effectively recycled into new products.
Strathbogie Shire’s Interim CEO, Tim Tamlin, explained that this new initiative is part of a statewide effort to enhance recycling practices and ensure more items are recycled efficiently.
“By changing how we sort our waste and recycle at home, more glass bottles and jars can be repurposed into useful materials like sand
replacement for concrete and new glass jars,” Mr. Tamlin said. “We’ve been so impressed by how engaged and passionate our Strathbogie residents already are about recycling.”
He continued, “Next year’s rollout of the new purple glass bin will make it easier than ever for our community to separate glass from other waste and continue supporting our commitment to a more sustainable future.”
How the New System Works
“Our current three-bin system has been working fantastically well, and the move to a four-bin system will help further improve our recycling,” said Mr. Tamlin.
Starting next year, residents will have four bins to separate their waste and recycling:
• Glass Recycling (purple bin)
• Mixed Recycling (yellow bin)
• General Rubbish (red bin)
• Food and Garden Organics (green bin) Council will continue to provide residents with more information on how to use their new purple bin as the rollout date approaches. In the meantime, households are asked to continue placing glass recycling in the yellow bin.

Knight’s Choice Triumphs: Local Pride Shines at the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup
Knight’s Choice has galloped into the hearts of racing enthusiasts by clinching victory at the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The win not only brought home one of the most coveted trophies in the equestrian world but also infused a sense of pride and joy throughout the Seymour community, where local connections to the horse run deep.
As the trophy was displayed at the Seymour Racing Club earlier this year, few could have imagined the whirlwind of excitement that would follow just weeks later.
John Symons and Sheila Laxon echoed these feelings, beaming with pride as she reflected on the achievement. Their connection to the winning horse goes back two years, when Sheila first met jockey Robbie Dolan on a Melbourne Cup cruise. It was Robbie’s musical talents that caught her attention while he serenaded guests on board. “I was there with the Melbourne Cup, and his singing instantly struck a chord with me,” Sheila shared, recalling how their paths crossed in such a unique setting, ultimately leading to their collaboration with Knight’s Choice.
“Keeping the Cup within Australasian shores with a horse we believed in so much means everything,” Sheila continued. Both trainers were quick to acknowledge the crucial role played by the Bain and Clydesdale families, the horse's owners, whose dedication and vision were invaluable in Knight’s Choice’s incredible journey.
Owner Cameron Bain's joy was palpable as he shared
the emotional significance of the win. “It still feels surreal. Finding the right conditions for the horse and seeing it pay off after so much planning—it’s just incredible," Bain explained. The victory was a family affair, with Cameron reflecting on the pride he felt sharing this moment with his father, a sentiment echoed across the audience.
In the spirit of community, the Bain family made it a point to share their joy by bringing the trophy to local nursing homes and primary schools. “We wanted to return the Cup to the people,” Cameron said. The smiles and excitement it generated among those who had the chance to see the trophy up close made their victory even more special. “Connecting with the community in this way was really important to us,” he added, highlighting the emotional bonds forged through racing.
Rod Bain, speaking about the emotional journey leading up to the win, recounted a poignant moment on Cameron's trip back from China, sharing how a belt broke but didn’t hinder their spirit. “We’ve been through ups and downs, and winning the millioncup together made it all worthwhile,” he recounted, showcasing the resilience and fortitude integral to the racing industry.
Throughout the discussion, the connections reminisced about their early days at the racetrack, with plans for a book to chronicle their connection to racing history. “I hope someone writes about our story,” said Rod, capturing the essence of memory, passion, and the pursuit of excellence that defines the racing world.
Success is often rooted in the hard work of long, slow conditioning.
“It’s not just about speed; it’s about preparing a horse for the grueling challenge of longer races,” shared John
Symons as he discussed insights from his 40 years in the game.
As the celebrations continued, conversations moved towards future plans.
“We have an invitation for a race in July after this incredible win, and we need careful planning,” mentioned Sheila Laxon.
“Our aim is to be back at the 2025 Melbourne Cup and this horse will be hard to beat,” ended Shiela.
The future is indeed bright, with the entire community looking forward to supporting Knight’s Choice in upcoming events.
The excitement from Knight’s Choice’s win at the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup resonated deeply, providing not just a moment of glory but a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations. The pride and passion shared by those involved illustrate not only what it means to win but the strength of the bonds formed through the sport of kings. Congratulations to all involved—it doesn’t get any bigger than this in racing!

Land Tax Clarity Needed for Region’s Farmers
Farmers in regional Victoria are facing increased challenges in securing land tax exemptions due to stricter criteria introduced by the Allan Labor Government. The updated guidelines from the State Revenue Office (SRO) now require detailed documentation, evidence of preparatory activities, and proof of intent to use land for farming.
The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, has voiced concerns about the added pressure this places on farming families in regional communities.
“Our farmers are under enough stress as it is without the added burden of piles of paperwork,” Ms. Cleeland said.
“The lack of clarity from this government about the land tax exemptions has left our farmers concerned about how they can prove to the SRO that they are legitimate primary producers.
“This government needs to provide more information
about the new criteria to ensure none of our primary producers are stuck with undeserved and cruel land tax bills.”
A Growing Burden for Regional Landowners
The land tax thresholds introduced earlier this year have sparked frustration among regional Victorians. In the Euroa electorate alone, many landholders received land tax bills for the first time, while others saw significant increases compared to previous years.
In 2024, land tax liabilities rose for:
1,763 landowners in Mitchell Shire, 437 landowners in Strathbogie Shire, and 429 landowners in Benalla.
Ms. Cleeland revealed her office had also assisted numerous residents who received inaccurate land tax bills.
“Beyond those with valid exemptions, my office has seen several residents receive land tax bills that should never have been issued,” Ms. Cleeland said.
“This includes bills mistakenly sent to renters, to children, and even for people’s primary residences.
“While we’ve managed to resolve many of these cases, it’s deeply concerning just how many incorrect bills were issued in this hasty roll-out of the land tax changes.
“When a government can’t manage its own money, it comes for yours.”
Accessing Land Tax Information
Farmers and landowners seeking more information about land tax exemptions can visit the SRO website at www.sro.vic.gov.au/land-tax/land-tax-exemptions or contact the SRO at 13 21 61 during standard business hours.

Victoria Leads the Way with New Paramedic Practitioner Role
Australia’s first-ever Paramedic Practitioners are one step closer to hitting the road, with the Allan Labor Government introducing a Bill into the Victorian Parliament to enshrine the role into law.
Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas joined paramedics to announce that the Paramedic Practitioners Bill 2024 will allow qualified paramedics to deliver a higher level of care to patients when and where they need it. The new specialised role will give graduates an expanded role—allowing them to independently deliver urgent care to reduce pressure on Victoria’s busy ambulance services and emergency departments.
Under the expanded role, Paramedic Practitioners will be able to assess, diagnose, and treat many conditions locally without the need to transfer patients to hospital. The biggest change will see Paramedic Practitioners able to handle and administer scheduled medicines, so they can prescribe and supply medicines on the spot to Victorians.
The first cohort of 30 paramedics are currently undertaking the nation-leading Paramedic Practitioner master’s degree at Monash University— with a second cohort set to begin the course next year. Developed alongside Ambulance Victoria, Safer Care Victoria, paramedics, clinicians, and unions, the first 30 students will be deployed to regional Victoria in 2026.
Once graduated, they’ll be able to treat conditions that commonly see people visit a hospital—including urinary catheter care, wound care and closure, minor infections, dislocations, and fractures.
“We created the free Paramedic Practitioners master’s degree because we know how important it is to give regional Victorians the care they need and help to reduce demand on our busy hospital EDs,” said Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern Victoria.
The Victorian Budget 2023/24 invested $20 million to
“This is a big deal: the first paramedics in Australia who can deliver advanced on-the-spot care and prescribe medicines – saving many Victorians a trip to hospital,” said Premier Jacinta Allan.
establish the role of Paramedic Practitioner, including delivering the new degree at no cost to eligible paramedics who have more than five years’ experience.
Since 2014, the Labor Government has invested more than $2 billion into ambulance services—recruiting more than 2,200 additional paramedics, delivering 41 new or upgraded ambulance stations, and establishing a new Centre for Paramedicine in partnership with Victoria University. The Government is also supporting the training of 40 additional Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics, with AV welcoming their largest cohort of MICA trainees in history.
“We listen to our workforce who told us Australia’s first Paramedic Practitioners will make a huge difference –they’ll have advanced skills that will help people right across regional Victoria,” said Minister for Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas.
These investments are as important as ever, with the latest quarterly data revealing Victoria’s hardworking paramedics continue to face high demand, attending close to 100,000 Code 1 call-outs.

Check for Bushfires Before Flying
As bushfire season intensifies, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) urges everyone involved in aviation to check for bushfire activity near their departure, enroute, operational, and destination locations before flying this summer.
Bushfires can ignite rapidly, creating unique and severe risks for aviation. Pilots, drone operators, aircraft owners, and air operators are all encouraged to prioritise bushfire awareness throughout the season.
Key Safety Guidelines for the Fire Season
• Pre-Flight Checks: Always verify fire activity near your intended flight path and destination.
• Avoid Active Fires: Maintain a safe distance from bushfire zones.
• Stay Aware of Local Operations: Be mindful of aerial firefighting activities in your area.
Firefighting aircraft operate under demanding conditions, often flying at high speeds and low altitudes with abrupt manoeuvres. Unnecessary aircraft or drones near bushfires can jeopardise these critical operations, endangering lives and increasing the potential for property damage.
CASA emphasises that all aircraft not involved in firefighting must stay at least 5 nautical miles (9.26 kilometres) away from fire boundaries and maintain an altitude of at least 3,000 feet above ground level.
CASA CEO and Director of Aviation Safety, Pip Spence, underscores the importance of adhering to these rules.
"By steering clear of any areas with bushfires, we can all do our part to keep the skies clear of any aircraft and let firefighting aircraft have full access where they need to," Ms. Spence says.
"Just remember – if you fly, they can’t – so think twice this fire season so that firefighting aircraft can do their part to keep local communities safe from bushfires.
"This also includes keeping your drone on the ground. Drones are small and hard to see, and pose a risk to aircraft and helicopters.
"In an emergency, you should follow the advice of your local fire authority."
CASA’s Role in Aerial Firefighting Safety
CASA has established a comprehensive framework of safety regulations governing aerial firefighting. These regulations include:
• Training and Approvals: Specific training and experience requirements for pilots and operational approvals for spotting fires or conducting water or retardant drops.
• Restricted Areas: Establishing temporary danger or restricted zones around active fires to protect firefighting efforts.
Each year, hundreds of aircraft participate in aerial firefighting across Australia, collectively flying approximately 30,000 hours to combat fires. CASA ensures air operators comply with stringent safety standards, including managing risks such as pilot fatigue. Regular safety checks and audits further bolster these efforts.
CASA is prepared to act swiftly during fire season, expediting operational approvals and facilitating the involvement of foreign pilots in Australian firefighting operations when needed.
By staying informed and following these safety measures, aviation operators can play a crucial role in supporting Australia’s firefighting efforts and keeping communities safe during bushfire season.

Strathbogie Shire Council Invites Community to Shape Future Planning Strategies
Strathbogie Shire Council is inviting local residents to help shape the future of the region with the development of two pivotal planning documents— the Rural and Residential Land Use Strategy (RRLUS) and the Urban Growth Strategy (UGS). These strategies will provide a framework for land use decisions over the next 15 to 30 years.
To ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach, the Council has partnered with a team of experienced planning and engagement specialists to guide the development of these strategies. Council is actively seeking community input through broad engagement activities taking place from November 11 to December 13, 2024. This input will inform the direction of these key strategies, which will have long-term impacts on the region's growth and development.
"We are committed to involving our community in this important strategic planning process," said Tim Tamlin, Chief Executive Officer of Strathbogie Shire
Council. "Your input is vital to understanding the diverse perspectives on land use and development across both urban and rural areas of Strathbogie."
Community members are encouraged to share their ideas on potential locations for future residential development, which will help guide the planning of the region’s growth. This can be done through an online survey or by attending a local drop-in event for more information. Full details can be found at share. strathbogie.vic.gov.au/RRLUS-and-UGS.
In addition to public surveys, the Council is calling on passionate individuals to participate in a Community Panel that will develop and present recommendations for the RRLUS and UGS.
Community Panel Sessions:
• Community Panel Session 1: Tuesday, 13 February 2025, 5:00pm - 6:30pm (online)
• Community Panel Session 2: Saturday, 22 February 2025, 9:00am - 3:00pm (in person in Euroa)
• Community Panel Session 3: Tuesday, 27 February 2025, 5:00pm - 6:30pm (online)
"We are looking for community members who are eager to contribute to the future of Strathbogie Shire," Mr. Tamlin continued. "No prior expertise is necessary—just an open mind, a willingness to work collaboratively, and a commitment to attend three sessions in February."
The Community Panel will work closely with planning experts to generate recommendations that will inform the preparation of the RRLUS and UGS. These recommendations will then be presented to the newly elected Council in 2025 during a Council workshop in March.
Strathbogie Shire Council is now inviting expressions of interest for up to 30 community members (18 years and older) to join the randomly selected Community Panel. Participants will receive a $100 gift card to acknowledge their time and commitment upon completing the sessions.
To express interest in joining the Community Panel or to learn more, visit share.strathbogie.vic.gov.au/ RRLUS-and-UGS.
See It. Share It. Your Footage Can Save Lives
Crime Stoppers Victoria and Victoria Police are calling on the community to make a difference on the roads by sharing footage of high-risk driving incidents as part of their new safety campaign, "See It. Share It." This initiative seeks to highlight dangerous driving behaviours through de-identified video examples, encouraging Victorians to submit footage to Crime Stoppers and play an active role in keeping the roads safe.
According to recent data from the Transport Accident Commission, over 1,200 lives have been lost on Victorian roads in the past five years. Tragically, 2023 saw 295 road fatalities—the highest in 15 years—and as of 2024, there have already been 242 lives lost on Victorian roads. These alarming numbers underscore the importance of community involvement in road safety.
With dash cams and recording devices becoming more common, Chief Executive of Crime Stoppers Victoria,
Stella Smith, believes that everyone can contribute to safer roads. “Each one of us has the power to make a difference. By reporting what you see, you can help prevent tragic incidents before they occur. Even one life lost on our roads is one too many,” she says.
Crime Stoppers encourages the community to submit footage through their secure online platform, which offers the option to remain anonymous and can be accessed on both mobile and desktop devices.
The decision to publicly release footage is a rare but impactful step for Crime Stoppers, as Ms. Smith explains, “We do not take the decision to release footage lightly, but we believe showing real examples of high-risk driving allows the community to see the type of footage that can assist in investigations.”
The message is clear: whether you're driving, cycling, walking, or riding a motorcycle, road safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role to play in reducing road trauma across Victoria.
Victoria Police Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, Glenn Weir, warns that high-risk drivers will be held accountable for their actions. “If you engage in risktaking behaviours on our roads, even if the police don’t always see you, be aware that other people may report you. The community is watching, and it is only
a matter of time before you face the consequences,” he said.
The penalties for dangerous driving in Victoria are severe, especially when drugs or alcohol are involved. Offenders may face significant fines, licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, or even jail time.
For dangerous driving specifically, penalties include fines up to $47,520, vehicle impoundment for 30 days, or up to two years' imprisonment.
Assistant Commissioner Weir also highlighted the importance of community-provided footage in investigations. “Police can use footage submitted by the community to investigate dangerous driving, and rest assured – we can, and frequently do, detect and prosecute offending drivers. We make no apologies for holding these people to account and removing them from our roads,” he added.
This initiative urges caution to ensure that filming does not occur while driving. However, if you witness dangerous driving that is safely captured on a dashcam or recording device, you can submit the footage at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
For immediate or life-threatening situations, remember to always call 000.

Share the Dignity’s It’s in the Bag
Christmas appeal nears milestone as it celebrates 10 years
As Australian charity
Share the Dignity marks the tenth anniversary of its It’s in the Bag Christmas appeal, it is on track to receive its one-millionth donation — a significant milestone representing one million vulnerable women and girls in Australia who have received a bag filled with essential items.
Each November, Share the Dignity calls on Australians to help women and girls facing homelessness, domestic violence, or poverty by donating a bag filled with essentials. These donations provide more than just essential items; they offer love, dignity, and hope at a time when it's most needed.
The initiative encourages everyday Australians to fill a bag with essential items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, and period products. Filled bags can be dropped off at decorated collection boxes at the front of any Bunnings store nationwide from Friday, 15 November to Sunday, 1 December 2024.
This year, Share the Dignity is aiming to collect at least 85,000 bags, with charity partners reporting a sharp rise in demand for period products this year. This surge is expected to continue in the lead up to Christmas with It’s in the Bag, making the support from the community more vital than ever.
Share the Dignity founder and managing director, Rochelle Courtenay said she was hopeful at least 85,000 women and girls would receive a gift of love and hope this Christmas.
“Together over the last ten years we have helped ensure almost one million women and girls who are waking up on Christmas morning in domestic violence refuges and homeless shelters have the dignity they deserve. For many, an It’s in the Bag was the only gift they received, and it gave them hope to keep going,” Ms Courtenay said.
“This year I hope that together we can ensure at least 85,000 more vulnerable women and girls receive a gift of love and hope this Christmas to ensure they aren’t having to go without basic essentials like period products, a toothbrush and soap.
“I know times are tough for so many, but if you can, I urge you to put an It’s in the Bag together or to get together with your bestie and pack one together. With our Bloody Big Survey revealing some eyeopening statistics, you never know who in your life may be impacted, so please, help someone in need this Christmas.”
Amy* knows firsthand the impact an It’s in the Bag donation can have, having received a bag for her and her daughter after fleeing their family home.
“That bag was a very big turning point in my life, we had not come out of a good situation when we received our bags,” Amy said.
“I didn’t wash my own hair for 2.5 years. If I had gotten into the shower without telling him or tried to wash my own hair, he would break through the ensuite locked door and rip the shower screens off. It got to the point where I was too scared to not tell him.
“When I left, I had to rebuild our lives again. The impact that he had on me and my daughter mentally and emotionally, you can’t reverse that.
“The bag restores your faith in humanity that not all people are like this. I had a lot of difficulty having showers and there was shampoo and body wash that I hadn’t bought because I was so scared. The bag restores your dignity and self-worth.”
Share the Dignity VIC Volunteer Team Leader Donna Levinson-Murray said she hoped to see more Victorian residents rally behind the cause to help vulnerable women and girls in need.
“With the cost of living at an all-time high, we’re seeing a significant increase in requests for support from charities across Victoria,” Ms LevinsonMurray said.
“Our It’s in the Bag campaign is an opportunity for the community to come together and make a
difference. Whether by filling a bag with essential items (and a few extras if possible), sponsoring a bag online, or volunteering, everyone can help give someone experiencing homelessness or hardship a beautiful Christmas gift.
“Victoria has a chance to make history this year by collecting Share the Dignity’s one-millionth bag— and you can be a part of it.”
Bunnings Chief Customer Officer, Rachael McVitty, said “We’re proud to be supporting Share The Dignity this year with collection boxes at all of our Australian stores, welcoming It’s in the Bag donations for vulnerable women and girls in need.”
“It’s an incredible achievement for Share the Dignity to mark its tenth year of It’s in the Bag, and we’re humbled to have been able to help over the past eight years.
“This year, we’re aiming to help Share the Dignity collect their millionth bag and are encouraging anyone who is able to donate to put together a bag filled with essentials and drop it at your local Bunnings from Friday 15 November until Sunday 1 December. If you’re short on time, we’ve also got the option to buy a virtual bag through our website.”
Those wanting to support women and girls like Amy and her daughter can drop-off an It’s in the Bag donation to their nearest Bunnings store from 15 November - 1 December 2024, Sponsor a Bag online, or register to become a Share the Dignity volunteer. Donations will be distributed to Australians in need in time for Christmas via Share the Dignity’s 3000 charity partners.

About Share the Dignity
Share the Dignity was founded in 2015 when founder Rochelle Courtenay first learnt of homeless women going without basic period products during their menstrual cycle, she decided the question was not, “why is no one doing anything” but rather, “what’s stopping me from doing something?” Since founding the charity, Share the Dignity has collected and distributed over 5 million packets of period products and 915,000 It’s in the Bag donations to those in need with the help of volunteers nationwide.

More Trains Needed for North East Victoria
During the most recent sitting week of Parliament, Annabelle Cleeland, the Nationals' Member for Euroa, called on the Allan Labor Government to prioritise the construction of additional VLocity trains for the North East Line, which runs between Albury and Melbourne.
In a question directed at the Minister for Public and Active Transport, Ms. Cleeland requested a timeline for the delivery of new trains, citing ongoing issues with overcrowding and unreliable services in the region.
“Every day, I hear complaints from passengers who can't reserve a seat and are left standing or even sitting on the floor for long journeys,” Ms. Cleeland said. “Trains are often sold out well in advance, and too often, passengers are forced to rely on crowded replacement buses—if they’re lucky enough to get a seat at all. With limited public transport alternatives, these trains are essential for people needing to attend medical appointments or work."
She continued, "This government must prioritise
building more trains for the North East Line in order to increase the number of services in our region and allow locals to utilise one of the few public transportation options available to them.”
While the number of passengers has significantly increased, the availability of seats and carriages on regional train lines has decreased, along with the punctuality of services and rolling stock.
According to V/Line's 2023-24 annual report, there was a net reduction of 24 carriages, as loco-hauled carriages were retired without being replaced by an equal number of VLocity trains. Additionally, services to Albury, Warrnambool, and Bairnsdale have been offering 175 fewer seats to passengers. The previous five-carriage diesel-hauled service
could accommodate 397 passengers, while the new VLocity trains only seat 222.
The latest punctuality report indicates a drop in on-time performance, with the rate falling from 89.1 percent to 87.4 percent, well below the target of 92 percent.
“Despite nearly double the number of passengers on North East V/Line services, this government has yet to ensure locals can travel comfortably and safely,” Ms. Cleeland remarked. “For a decade, our community has been calling for improved public transport services, and now even experts warn that the Allan Labor government has pushed V/Line to breaking point.”
Boosting Educational Opportunities Through Technology Donations
A program designed to help Greater Shepparton students make the most of their education continues to thrive, thanks to the ongoing support of local organisations finding innovative ways to give back
The Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project’s ‘Laptops with Love’ initiative has provided nearly 450 laptops, connecting students with vital educational and employment opportunities. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the program was created in response to the urgent need for technology access among students whose education could have been severely disrupted without it.
The program serves recipients across a range of educational levels, with the majority being secondary school, TAFE, and university students. Since its inception, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has been a key supporter, donating new laptops to the Lighthouse Project for distribution to students in need. Recently, GMW expanded its contributions by introducing mobile phone donations to further assist students.
Peter Holland, Manager of Information Technology at GMW, emphasised the impact of these donations on students’ education.
“We initially donated 10 of our repurposed mobile phones as a trial to see if they would benefit students,” he said. “We got some really positive feedback about how these were received, and we have since
donated a further 20 mobile phones. Laptops with Love is a fantastic program, so we are happy to be part of it and to be able to help it grow.”
Similarly, Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) has been involved with the program from the start and has recently joined GMW in donating mobile phones. Ryan McGowan, GVW’s Manager of Digital Operations, expressed pride in supporting the program’s expansion.
“So far we’ve been able to donate more than 30 mobile phones in the trial, in addition to the 95 laptops through the program since we joined in 2022,” he said. “We know that access to technology increases opportunities in many different ways, so for us to be able to help enable more people is something we’re really proud to be able to do to support our community.”
Amy Robinson, Executive Officer at the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, shared her satisfaction with how the program has evolved.
“We are delighted to now be expanding this program by providing smartphones to families and young people who struggle to afford this purchase,” she said. “This impact would not be possible without the valued support of organisations like GMW and GVW repurposing their assets to assist our community.”
Local organisations and businesses interested in donating IT resources to the Greater Shepparton community are encouraged to contact the Lighthouse Project’s Laptops with Love Coordinator, Kathy Fuller, at kfuller@gslp.com.au or visit the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project website at www.gslp.com.au/programs/laptop-with-love.

Remembrance Day
We were honoured to attend the Nagambie town service on Remembrance Day. The children had spent the weeks leading up to the day learning about the significance of the the date, men and women who had fought for the freedom of our country and why the poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day. Ivy did a fantastic job of her speech about Ellen Savage, who was a nurse during WW2. Morgan, Andy and Tatum used Auslan to sign along to the Ode of Remembrance, a first for all of them and the signed wonderfully. We were once again impressed with the students respect and reverence shown throughout their learnings and at the ceremony.

St Joseph's Primary
Costa Visits
On Friday November 15th we had Costa Georgiadis visit our school garden! The children had spent time during the week researching Costa and his amazing, interesting life that led him to a career as a TV gardener. The students proudly showed Costa around our beautiful garden and listened intently to him speak about the importance of bees in pollinating plants to continue their life cycle and produce the fruit, vegetables and flowers that we all love. We were very excited that Costa enjoyed the mulberries from our tree and the strawberry ‘roll ups’ we had made for him. We are already looking forward to him visiting again in the future.

Art Show
We were thrilled to showcase the students' artwork at the Mechanics Hall last weekend. The pieces displayed used many different mediums such as photography, painting, weaving, drawing, construction, stencilling and printing. It was wonderful to see students proudly showing their hard work off to their family, friends and our very special guest Costa, who awarded some prizes for his favourite pieces and spent time talking with the children about their creations. We would like to thank our amazing art teacher Mel for creating amazing pieces with the students and Sam, Macey and Maree for their hard work setting up the displays. A huge thank you too, to all that attended the show.

Our boys finished second at Division cricket, making it through to Regionals.

Nagambie Lawn Bowls
By Wrong Bias
The past two weeks have continued to be successful for the Lakers in both divisions.
On Saturday November 9, Division 2 played Shepparton Golf, always a formidable opponent however this time Nagambie got the chocolates, by the narrow margin of 6 shots. Final score was Nagambie 86, Shep. Golf 80. The biggest winning margin was 18, recorded by Wayne Flint, Glen Evans, Chris Spencer and Shane Edwards.
On the same day Division 6 had a strong win against Dookie, the final scores being Nagambie 78, Dookie 55. The biggest winning margin was 13 and on that team were Lyn Sullivan, Arthur Goring, “Bardy” McLeod and Mark Speck. In mid-week competition our Division 6 side were defeated by Rushworth, 40 to 27. The team of Pam Jarvis, Arthur Goring, Tina Keady and Jan Goring had a nail-biter and came home by 1 shot, final scores Nagambie 17, Rushworth 16. The Division 2 side travelled to Numurkah and came home with the bacon, by 4 shots. One game came down to the wire and finished as a draw. The team of Kaye Tennant, Glen Evans, Kim Blennerhassett and “Porky” Page had the biggest win for the day, 24 shots to 10.
More recently, on Saturday November 16 both Lakers sides suffered defeats. Division 2 travelled to Tatura and Hilltop were the victors by 6 shots. The most impressive win for Lakers was recorded by John Sinden, John Tennant, Major Mick Mitchell and Drew Coulthard, winning by 12 shots: 26 to 14.
Division 6 travelled to Violet Town and went down by 6 shots: Towners 62, Lakers 56. Jenny Jones, John Anderson, Peter Keady and the killer, Peter Brady, won their rink by the narrowest of margins: 1 shot, 15 to 14.
Both sides are now in the top two and it is an interesting tussle between the top four sides. Don’t forget the three “C” s…Confidence, Cooperation and Comradeship. I wish I had thought of that, unfortunately I read it in the manual. I will stick with my usual piece of advice…take your grass. Did I make that up or was it someone else? Cheers!

Costa’s Climate Ready Gardens Event Inspires Sustainable Change
The Strathbogie Shire community gathered on Friday November 15, at Tahbilk’s Peppercorn Paddock in Nagambie for Costa’s Climate Ready Gardens: Thriving Through Change, an inspiring event led by Strathbogie Shire Council with Guest Speaker Costa Georgiadis, host of Gardening Australia.
The sold-out event brought together gardening enthusiasts, sustainability advocates, and community members eager to learn practical ways to combat climate change and create resilient green spaces.
Costa captivated the audience with his practical strategies for sustainable gardening, highlighting how gardeners play a vital role as stewards of the environment. He emphasised that through thoughtful planning and simple actions, individuals can make a meaningful impact in the fight against climate change, fostering resilience and connection with nature.
The event began with a moving smoking ceremony led by Taungurung Elder Uncle Mick, who invited attendees to participate. This ceremonial act, symbolising cleansing, healing, and a profound connection to the land, set a reflective and meaningful tone for the day.
Taungurung Elder Uncle Shane Monk, also shared his invaluable insights, offering a compelling perspective on traditional land care practices and the cultural importance of nurturing a connection with Country.
Jo Nash, General Manager of Tahbilk Wines, spoke passionately about the devastating impacts of recent floods on Tahbilk’s operations and the restoration process. She highlighted the winery’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its ongoing efforts to restore the land while maintaining their focus on conservation.
Attendees also had the chance to interact with the Euroa Arboretum, which was onsite selling plants. As a special gesture, Strathbogie Shire Council provided guests with native seedlings from the Arboretum to encourage further plantings and biodiversity at home.
Strathbogie Shire Council Interim CEO Tim Tamlin expressed his gratitude to Costa and highlighted the significance of the event. “It’s been wonderful to see the community come together to learn from Costa’s expertise and his passion. Events like this empower us to come together, learn from past challenges like the October 2022 floods, and strengthen our resilience to the ongoing impacts of climate change”.
This event was made possible with the support of Emergency Recovery Victoria’s Community Recovery Hub Program, funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
