Entering into the final stages of the $92 million transformation, an exciting new chapter is underway at Saddlebrook Resort, the iconic 480-acre Tampa Bay-area destination known for world-class golf, tennis, leisure and group getaways. In motion is reimagining the 451-room resort from the ground up – positioning it among the nation’s premier leisure and sports resorts.
The renovations touch nearly every facet of the guest experience, from the lobby, accommodations, and restaurants to the event spaces, outdoor areas, and multiple swimming pools. Renowned golf course architect Rees Jones has undertaken the redesign of Saddlebrook’s courses. There are now 41 tennis courts, 8 pickleball courts, a fitness center for cardio and strength training, a spa, plus a planned multi-court Padel area, and more. Saddlebrook is also home to the famed Saddlebrook Golf Academy, Hopman Tennis Program, and Saddlebrook Prep, long time training grounds for international sports legends.
Speaking of legends, the original owners

Saddlebrook’s renowned golf courses, originally designed by Arnold Palmer, further cemented Saddlebrook’s reputation as a destination for the who’s-who in sports. Over
have honed their skills at Saddlebrook’s onsite academy and facility.
The launch of Saddlebrook Preparatory School in 1993, combined with the resort’s impressive sports facilities, attracted studentathletes from around the world, blending elite training with academics.
In the works, Saddlebrook’s revered golf courses are reimagined to heighten playabil

become a challenging 27-hole layout made up of three interchangeable nine-hole courses. These can be combined in various ways to create three distinct 18-hole championship courses. Greens will be reconstructed using the USGA method for improved performance, fairway bunkers will be invigorated with upgraded drainage and crisp sand, and tee surfaces will be rebuilt and laser-leveled for consistency.
These upgrades build upon the December 2024 opening of Saddlebrook’s new 13-acre driving range that features a double-sided range, two TifEagle™ bermudagrass putting greens, and three short-game areas with greenside bunkers.
Setting the stage for leisurely afternoons, guests will lounge around Saddlebrook’s 500,000 gallon “Super Pool” - Inspired by a playful ‘60s aesthetic, the Super Pool will reflect a palette of vibrant pinks and lush greens that infuse the space with vintage charm and modern-day appeal.
Guest rooms and suites will be entirely reimagined—seamlessly blending contemporary sophistication with the warmth and ease of residential living. Accommodations will include a range of standard guest rooms to three-bedroom suites perfect for families

and groups who want more room to spread out. Every detail has been considered to create a space that feels fresh, functional and inviting. New furniture will give the rooms a modern feel – marked by sleek wood-accented dressers, plush seating, and thoughtfully designed dining areas. A calm ing palette of soft neutrals and deep blues will set the tone, complemented by warm lighting and hand-selected artwork. In the suites, updated kitchens will feature white cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and rich navy accents. Grouped in peaceful residential clusters, Saddlebrook’s rooms and suites are a central component of the resort’s innovative walking village layout.
A resort is never complete without cock tails and great food options. The resort’s dining experiences are being revitalized, Saddlebrook will feature four experiences for food and drink, including the lobby’s coffee shop, a new poolside restaurant and bar, a sports bar and all-day dining destina tion.

By STAN AWTREY
It was a typical summer day. It was 9 a.m., the temperature was already 80 degrees, and the air was thick enough to grab by the handful. Those of us who grew up in these conditions may be used to it by now, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s also why the notion of spending a few days in a cooler place has such appeal and why Northern Michigan is an incredible golf vacation destination that’s only a few hours away.
You can fly to Traverse City, Michigan, non-stop from 20 U.S cities, and you can be at one of the BOYNE Golf resorts after about an hour behind the wheel. Upon arrival, you’ll have a ton of options when it comes to golf, outdoor activities, awesome accommodations, and cool, comfortable playing conditions.
BOYNE Golf has 11 golf courses and a trio of unforgettable resorts that are within an 18-mile radius of Petoskey, Michigan. It’s like golf heaven, ideal for any sort of dream buddy trip, but also perfect for the
family since there’s plenty for the kids and non-golfers to do. And the new nine-hole short course, dubbed Doon Brae, and the adjacent 27-hole Himalayan putting area, the Back Yaird, are a great way to introduce youngsters to the game — or settle a few bets between friendly competitors.
It all started in 1955 when Everett Kircher, who owned a ski resort in northern Michigan, conceived the notion to bring in golfers to create business for the summer. He began with a nine-hole executive course at Boyne Mountain, near the alpine-like village created at the base of the slopes. He hired Robert Trent Jones Sr. to create the first championship course, The Heather, at a second resort he had recently acquired, and the idea grew and grew.
The Links may be the most majestic course in BOYNE’s collection. With holes along the shore of Lake Michigan — and unforgettable views throughout — players are challenged by bluffs and dunes that produce an Irish vibe. The Quarry was built
in and around a former shale quarry. Paired with The Links, it provides a night-and-day experience. There are stone cliffs and gorges and natural ponds that architect Arthur Hills has used to create one memorable hole after the next. The Preserve cuts through the forest but is close enough to hear the waves and feel the lake breeze. It finishes with a memorable par-3 set right on the shoreline. This may be the favorite for the club’s members. Crooked Tree Golf Club is the only course that was purchased instead of being specifically built for BOYNE Golf. The final three holes were enhanced by Hills in 2014, and Ray Hearn’s modifications on several holes in 2022 further improved the course’s impact and playability.
The Heather was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1966 and was the first BOYNE Golf championship course. It winds its way through rolling hills and around natural areas — and includes the requisite bunkers that the designer loved. The finish-

ing hole — one of the best in the country — works around a large pond that was “suggested” by Kircher. A poorly placed drive might require a long iron and a potential splash. The Heather is one of those courses you can never get tired of playing. It was voted the 2019 Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. The Donald Ross Memorial is a compila-
tion of holes inspired by the work of the great architect. Deep thought and research were done before selecting the holes to replicate, and visitors can get the feel of a famous designer. There are holes reproducing the ones found at Pinehurst, Seminole, Aronimink, Oakland Hills, Oak Hill, etc.
You can experience all the features of a Ross design — from the small, tricky greens to the

sand. Better bring your sand wedge, because you’re going to need it. The Arthur Hills was built and named in honor of the famed architect, and was named among the top 200 resort courses in the country by Golfweek. The wide fairways make it a playable layout, but there are plenty of challenges as you get closer to the greens. The 13th hole features a 350-foot drop from tee to green; it’s a good chance to crush your driver and see how far it will go.
The Moor has a bit of everything — bunkers, wetlands, water, and a bag full of dog legs. The 18th features an S-shaped fairway with a couple of different water hazards. Doon Brae is the new nine-hole short course that opened in the summer of 2025. The course is cut into the side of the hill that doubles as a ski slope during the winter. Players get to choose the distance from three teeing areas, making for a fun afternoon. Beware the greens, which are similar to what you’ll find at some of great old courses, like St. Andrews, Royal Troon, Royal Dornoch, etc. The Biarritz green on the final hole is especially fun. No carts at Doon Brae, but it’s not a difficult walk.
You’ll have to hop into a golf cart to drive 1.2 miles to the first hole on these two courses, which both begin in the shadow of SkyBridge Michigan, a 1,100-foot

suspension bridge that connects the two peaks of Boyne Mountain, and finish in the clubhouse near Deer Lake. And although The Alpine and The Monument are both built around Boyne Mountain, there’s never a hint that you’re playing a typical mountain course. There’s no up-one-down-theother feel that permeates so many mountain layouts. It almost feels like you’re playing downhill the entire round. The Alpine is an entertaining layout that finishes with a long par-5 that requires an approach shot over a pond in front of the green. The Monument tips its cap to some of the game’s top designers, and each hole has a granite marker with a commemorative designation. The 16th is dedicated to Kircher and has an old Nash car buried in the middle of the trap, a nod to Kircher’s old days as a car dealer in Detroit. The 18th is dedicated to Sam Snead and features an island green.

maintenance plan, meaning the fairways and greens will be pristine at each course. USA Today 10 Best named it the #1 Golf Destination in the United States last spring, and demand has been so high that they have been accepting golf package bookings for 2026 since last June. So, it’s a good idea to plan early.
Conditions on all 11 of the BOYNE courses are consistently good from tee

My original LUXX Paddle drove opponents crazy, INFINIGRIT makes them INSANE!
Selkirk LUXX Control Air INFINIGRIT
The first thing that you are going to notice just by touching the face of the paddle the Infinigrit Surface, and once you set you mind to getting one, you can’t wait to touch it., believe me I couldn’t. Infinigrit will last you 3 times longer than a Raw Carbon Fiber paddle.

Moving your opponents from the crazy stage to insane comes from the fact that you can generate spin up to 2,000 RPM’s.
The 19MM thickness, combined with the EVA Foam in the throat of the handle makes its lighter, you can move it quicker and gives you a little extra POP!
For me it’s all about the control and being able to place shots. The Honeycomb Core gives me an even more generous and forgiving sweet spot, that certainly helps with accuracy.
Do you want to drive your opponents insane – The LUXX Control Air with INFINIGRIT might just be that next paddle for you! www.Selkirk.com

Set along one of Canada’s most remarkable stretches of Atlantic coastline, Nova Scotia’s Northumberland Shore, lies Fox Harb’r Resort, long celebrated as one of Canada’s most exclusive destinations. Fox Harb’r Resort is redefining luxury golf in Canada with a multi-million dollar expansion, debuting the highly anticipated Ocean Course, accompanied by the heathland-style Vineyard course. Designed by Canada’s top golf architects, Doug Carrick and Tom McBroom, this marks the beginning of a visionary golf transformation at the celebrated Nova Scotia resort, which is commemorating its 25th anniversary.
Great golf is just the beginning at this accessible luxury destination, located just 90 minutes from Halifax Airport. For discerning travelers, guests can bypass traditional airports and land directly on the resort’s private 5,000-foot runway.

Founded in 2000 by Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist Ron Joyce, co-
founder of Tim Hortons, Canada’s largest and most iconic coffee chain, Fox Harb’r Resort was built as a “labour of love” along Nova Scotia’s picturesque Northumberland
shore. A proud host to golf legends, world leaders, and celebrities, Joyce’s vision was to establish an unparalleled golf and luxury resort experience in his home province. Today, under the leadership of his son, Steven Joyce, the resort is embarking on a new era of excellence, while staying true to its founding principles of being a world-class destination that blends luxury, nature, and sport.
The centerpiece of the Fox Harb’r evolution will be the Ocean Course, the first phase of a sweeping golf expansion that will ultimately deliver 36 holes of championship play.
The Ocean Nine debuted in May 2025, marking the first phase of the resort’s bold golf transformation, offering players a thrilling new coastal experience. At the start of the 2026 season, the Ocean Nine will be paired with the new Vineyard Nine, a temporary routing that will allow golfers to experience the stunning new coastal and vineyard holes designed by

Carrick and McBroom while the final phases are completed.
Inspired by Scotland’s legendary Links courses, the layout delivers a refined yet exhilarating challenge, blending dramatic elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and breathtaking oceanfront views along the rugged Northumberland Strait.
“The Ocean Course will unfold like a journey, building anticipation from inland terrain to commanding coastal vistas,” says Carrick. “By the time golfers reach the ele-
vated 5th tee, they are met with a spectacular panorama of the Northumberland Strait and Prince Edward Island—one of the course’s most awe-inspiring reveals. From there, the layout fully embraces the oceanfront, flowing through the par-four 6th, which plays into the backdrop of the Strait. The journey continues with the scenic par-three 7th and the rolling par-five 8th, winding along the cliffs before rising to the final hole. It’s a routing that seamlessly blends challenge, beauty, and strategy, ensuring that every round is both

exhilarating and unforgettable.”
Work is already underway on the complementary Vineyard Course, which will be open for play in 2026. The Vineyard course is a Heathland-style layout weaving through forests, open meadows, and alongside the resort’s award-winning vineyards. With its sheltered fairways framed by fescue and heather, the course will offer a classic and strategic playing experience.
“With both the Ocean and Vineyard Courses, Fox Harb’r will be one of the most diverse golf destinations in North America,” added Kevin Toth, president of Fox Harb’r Resort. “Players will encounter two entirely different challenges, from dramatic oceanfront holes to the refined, inland vineyard layout.”
As Eastern Canada’s only Four Diamond, Five-Star resort, it celebrates 25 years, and its transformation extends beyond golf. The resort boasts an all-new luxury spa— inspired by the world’s top wellness retreats. Highlights of the new spa include:
•Comprehensive Hydrothermal Circuit: Fox Harb’r Spa & Wellness is a meticulously designed experience featuring a Bio Sauna, Aroma Steam Room, Experience Showers with customizable water pressure, and a Cold Plunge to stimulate circulation and

support muscle recovery.
• Restorative Wellness & Recovery: A therapeutic Salt Lounge designed to promote respiratory health, skin rejuvenation, and deep relaxation is complemented by a selection of advanced therapies focused on holistic healing and stress relief.
• High-Performance Fitness Studio: Designed to rival elite wellness clubs, it features a hydration bar, plyometric equipment, and stateof-the-art cardio solutions tailored to complement the spa’s hydrotherapy offerings.
Spanning 1,400 acres, Fox Harb’r Resort offers a luxurious experience, with accommodations for up to 200 guests. Beyond golf and the new spa, visitors can enjoy a deep-water marina, kayaking, sport shooting, archery, axe throwing, award-winning

conference facilities, fine dining, and more.
The first phase of a new community of 18 luxury golf townhomes debuted this spring, further enriching the resort’s reputation as a premier destination for golf, wellness, and luxury living.
“Nova Scotia continues to grow as a golf
destination, and Fox Harb’r brings something distinctive to the province’s landscape,” says Toth. “Whether it’s a round of golf, a weekend escape, or time at the spa, we offer a place to unwind and recharge truly.”
As the resort celebrates its 25th anniversary, its trajectory feels as ambitious as its origins. For those seeking a destination where land, sea, and sky converge in effortless harmony, Fox Harb’r remains in a league of its own.

Travel golfers planning a Nova Scotia getaway may want to consider an extended stay so they can hit both Fox Harb’r and Cabot Cape Breton, home to a pair of acclaimed tracks. A scenic three-hour drive separates the two resorts.

With the recent announcement by the PGA TOUR that The Sentry golf tournament will not be played in Maui in January 2026 many are inaccurately assuming that all Maui communities and golf courses are in similar situations. The Ka’anapali Golf Courses – also located on West Maui – are open and welcoming guests, all while still following water restrictions and allocations determined by the state and county.
“Since the PGA TOUR’s announcement, it’s important for potential visitors to know that Maui’s other golf courses, hotels and recreational areas are open to everyone for fall and winter vacations,” said Ka’anapali Golf Courses General Manager Karl Reul.
Located along Maui’s famed Ka’anapali Coast, Ka’anapali’s Golf Courses two 18-hole layouts, Royal and Kai, offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains.

“Maui is welcoming visitors with aloha and golfers can rest assured that Maui continues to offer incredible opportunities to play,” said Sherry Duong, Executive Director, Maui Visitors & Convention Bureau. “Ka‘anapali Golf delivers an unforgettable experience, paired with the resort’s world-class hospitality, and remains an integral part of what makes Maui a premier golf destination. West Maui Mountains. Opened in 1962 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the par-71, 6,700-yard Royal Ka‘anapali Course features wide fairways and undulating greens which make it both distinctive and demanding. The tournament-tested layout played host to the Champions Tour Ka‘anapali Classic for 14 years, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, the Canada Cup and LPGA Kemper Open, welcoming Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Jan Stephenson, Betsy King and other legends.
Complementing the Royal Ka‘anapali Course is the modernized Ka‘anapali Kai Course, which hosted Golf Channel’s “Big Break Ka‘anapali” in 2008. By TOM LANDERS
I recently had the opportunity to visit Madeira Island, off the coast of Portugal, with two other golf writers to learn about golf on the Island and the culture of Madeira. Set in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 370 miles off the northwest coast of Africa and 620 miles southwest of Lisbon, Madeira certainly has a lot to offer. Madeira is part of a Portuguese archipelago, which includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas. It is the kind of place you’ll want to book time and time again. Roughly half of the population of these islands lives in Funchal, the capital city of Madeira.
Madeira is the birthplace of soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, has spectacular scenery and unique cuisine, and is famously known for its fortified wine. On July 4, 1776, the USA’s founding fathers used Madeira wine to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Golf in Madeira is unique, with superb courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Seve Ballesteros, and a soon-to-be-completed course by Nick Faldo, complemented by the Island’s laid-back vibe.
The trip began with a flight from Boston to Lisbon, Portugal, and then continued to Madeira Island on TAP Air Portugal (https://www.flytap.com/en-us). The staff
of TAP Air Portugal, from the counter staff to flight attendants, were among the friendliest I have ever encountered in all my years of flying. TAP Air Portugal flies directly to Lisbon from many U.S. cities, including Boston, New York, Newark, Chicago, Washington, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. I learned that when traveling with TAP Air Portugal, you can take advantage of the Portugal Stopover program (https://www.flytap.com/en-pt/stopover). You can lay over in any city on your flight itinerary for up to ten days without incurring any additional fees and receive a 25% discount on any flights to other Portuguese destinations, a nice bonus for the traveling golfer or tourist. If you’re connecting via Lisbon, you can add the TAP Air Portugal lounge to your ticket or pay for access upon arrival. With a layover of more than three hours, it’s well worth it. Once inside, all drinks (including beer and wine), food, and snacks are included, and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer than in the main terminal.
Born out of volcanic activity over five million years ago, the Island is characterized by its rugged coastline and dramatic mountains that rise above the clouds, wrapped in lush subtropical vegetation that immediately makes you feel a world away from home.
As the Island is neither large nor flat (35 miles long and 13 miles wide), houses and buildings climb steadily up the rising landscape, linked by winding roads into the hills. It makes for a remarkable sight when you’re landing by plane or coming into the dock on the ferry. At the same time, the singular road from the airport into the capital city of Funchal hugs the coastline and sweeps over steep ravines running down from the Island’s peaks.
We stayed at Vila Baleira Funchal, just outside the bustling center but still within walking distance of it all, a spot I thought was ideal. The hotel was well-appointed, featuring spacious rooms, a rooftop bar, and a pool overlooking the inviting blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan to spend days exploring the city, venturing further across the Island, playing top-class golf courses, or dipping into the natural pools carved out of the rocky coastline, it’s a bright and dependable base. If, however, you’re after a bigger hotel with lazy afternoons by the pool, more on-site activities, and wider food options, you’ll find plenty of four- and five-star choices that give you the best of both worlds.
What to do in Funchal
Funchal is a very walkable city, though

you’ll need to be prepared for semi-regular inclines and declines as you wind your way through the 600-year-old capital, but it’s well worth the exercise. Around every corner, you’ll find quaint restaurants and bars, with historic architecture and vibrant colors along the way.
Beyond the meandering strolls and the gems you’ll stumble across, there are plenty of activities and outings that make Funchal a genuinely fun base for exploring Madeira.
You can start with a ride on the cable car up to Monte or the Botanical Garden, where the views over the city and the Atlantic are sensational, and the gardens themselves are lush and peaceful. From Monte, you can hop into one of the iconic wicker-basket carts (carreiros in white and hats included) for a strangely exhilarating ride back down into Funchal.
Or, if you’re after something more active, there are hiking trails that lead out from the city, some following the Island’s levadas (old irrigation channels unique to Madeira, now doubling as scenic walking trails through mountains and forests), others climbing high into the hills with spectacular
views. Or, if the sea is calling, you could surf, sail, paddleboard, or head out from Funchal harbor on a whale and dolphinwatching tour, where you’ve a great chance of spotting them in the wild.

All in all, Funchal is an excellent spot for either a whole week or just a few days before heading off to another part of the Island. And whether you’re taking it easy or packing in a full itinerary, it’s a place that always has more to offer than meets the eye.
Golf on Madeira Santo da Serra
Looking over the bay of Machico, where the Portuguese navigators first landed on Madeira Island, lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club (www.SantoDaSerraGolf.com).
The original course, opened in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones, who created a completely new and spectacular 27-hole golf course set in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature has to offer.
The MACHICO and DESERTAS courses are the ones that are usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS Course, although slightly plain, maintains the same game level.
The Madeira Islands Open was a long-running stop on the European Tour, first played in 1993 and run-

ning until 2015. Most years, it was hosted at Santo da Serra, with a brief stint at Porto Santo Golf between 2009 and 2011. In its later years, it became one of two European Tour events held in Portugal each season, alongside the Portugal Masters, and gave the Island a regular spot on the professional golfing map.
The Machico Course is a standout for its dramatic coastal scenery and challenging layout. This course features some of the most iconic holes on the Island, including the 3rd and 4th, which are perched over 2,200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views of Machico Bay. The par-3 4th plays 202 yards off the tips; the tee shot forces you over another plunge down the mountainside, thick with vegetation and trees, into a green that clings to the cliff edge. From there, you look out across the bay and the Atlantic from 1,000 feet above sea level; a view, and a hole that you’ll remember for years to come.
The Desertas Course offers golfers a mix of challenging terrain

and stunning natural beauty. This course is known for its elevation changes and the memorable par-five 2nd hole, which presents a significant drop towards a lakeguarded fairway. The Desertas Course complements its sister course, Machico,
by providing a diverse and exciting golf experience, all set against the backdrop of Madeira’s spectacular landscapes.
The Serras Course provides a tranquil golfing experience, ideal for players of all skill levels. Set inland, this course is surrounded by lush, mountainous scenery, offering a peaceful environment with wide fairways and a variety of hole designs. The Serras Course is perfect for those seeking a more relaxed round, while still enjoying the challenge and natural beauty that characterize all courses at Santo da Serra.

Porto Santo was the next stop. It is the second inhabited Island in the Madeira archipelago, just 7 miles long and 4 miles wide, and situated approximately 50 miles from Madeira itself. It is reachable by a quick 25-minute flight from Funchal or a 2-hour ferry ride. We took the plane ride over in the morning and had a relaxing ferry ride back at the end of the day. The ferry is more like a small cruise ship, with many lounges and even a sit-
down dining room offering wait service.
The Island’s showpiece is its 6-mile stretch of golden sand, soft and powdery, washed by turquoise Atlantic waters. The locals swear by its natural healing qualities, thanks to the sand’s unique makeup, but whether you believe in that or not, it’s the perfect place to switch off and unwind.
Away from the beach, Vila Baleira is the Island’s hub, with narrow streets and the Christopher Columbus House Museum as a reminder of its history. Beyond town, trails and paths criss-cross the landscape, ideal for walking or cycling through Porto Santo’s unspoiled scenery.
Safe, welcoming, and wonderfully laidback, Porto Santo works just as well for a complete holiday as it does for a quick escape alongside a trip to Madeira. And, in the center of the Island, is the spectacularly unique Porto Santo Golf Club
Porto Santo Golf Club (www. PortoSantoGolfe.com ), designed by Seve Ballesteros, stretches all the way across the Island from dune-rolling beach to dramatic basalt cliffs. It offers that ideal combination – natural beauty and a challenging game. The layout was designed to blend in with the natural landscape, and considerable care was taken to minimize its environmental impact. The course comprises 18 holes over 7,000 yards, with a par of 72. It features two distinct personalities –a South Course in the American tradition, dotted with lakes and demanding a long, precise game; and a North Course played along spectacular cliff tops, evoking a links-like feel.
The standout stretch is 13 to 15, where the views are jaw-dropping and the golf unforgiving.
True to Seve’s style, the layout has 6 par-3s, 6 par-4s, and 6 par-5s, giving the round a rhythm all of its own. Being one of my golf idols, getting the chance to play a Seve Ballesteros course was a highlight of the trip. After just a few holes, it is evident that this place had Seve written all over it. No internal out-of-bounds, only a handful of lateral hazards, and beyond that, you could hit it anywhere (within reason). If you find it, you play it, and then scramble like mad to keep your score intact, as I did on several holes, especially number 18, where I scrambled for par from the tenth fairway.
Porto Santo Golf is rugged and

rural; the course looks as nature intended. From the first tee to the last green, it’s a course that offers a mix of variety and clever touches, demanding both smart decisions and solid shots.
Whether it’s the sand, the scenery, or Seve’s handiwork that brings you to the Island, Porto Santo is the kind of place

you’ll be glad you made time for. There is also a nine-hole ‘pitch-and-putt’ course of par-three holes (ideal for training precision shots), and a driving range. The clubhouse is a triumph of modern design, yet it blends harmoniously into the landscape, with its dry-stone walling, natural wood, and hip wicker furniture. Facilities include a sauna and Jacuzzi, as well as a well-stocked pro shop. The Golf Club bar and restaurant command a splendid view over the Island and out to sea.
At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, Palheiro Golf (www.PalheiroGolf.com) is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestled below, just 10 minutes away, is Funchal, the Island’s capital.
Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the fivestar Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro - a Relais & Châteaux property - the 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this

picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira›s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.
The course features many memorable risk-reward holes with spectacular views, with the 18th hole giving you a stunning finish. Rock groupings in view from the tee show the safe left-hand limits of the landing area. The elevated center of the fairway has a dazzling view out to the ocean and down to the green and clubhouse in the pines. The confident and adventurous can go for the green through the opening to the right of the cypress. Conservative players have a lot of fairway to hit to the left of the tree. Eagles to double bogeys - everything is possible on this finishing hole.
Set beneath the 18th green at Madeira Island’s Palheiro Golf, the Vista Balancal Restaurant sits high above Funchal, affording a glorious panorama of the bay, the mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Ponta do Pargo
Madeira is adding to its golfing landscape with the Ponta do Pargo Golf Course, designed by six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo. This addition promises a unique experience for golf enthusiasts. Located in the village of Ponta do Pargo, the golf course is situated at one of the most picturesque spots on the Island. The village is perched on the edge of a cliff on Madeira’s western tip, providing players with an unmatched view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Scheduled to open in 2026, Sir Nick Faldo and his team crafted a par-72 layout that seamlessly blends with Madeira’s natural beauty. The course features over 600 feet of elevation changes, challenging golfers while showcasing stunning scenic vistas. Three greens sit near the cliff edge, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The 16th green is situated next to the historic Farol do Ponta do Pargo lighthouse, which was built in 1922.
During our visit, we had the opportunity to walk part of the course and see it taking shape. The course won’t have just one signature hole, but several. One of the standout holes on the course will be the 10th hole. This challenging par 3 requires a precise tee shot over a deep ravine, with the Atlantic
Ocean below. The green sits on a raised plateau, surrounded by natural obstacles, making it a memorable hole both for its difficulty and its beauty.
For golf enthusiasts visiting Madeira, Ponta do Pargo Golf Course is a must-play. With its stunning views, challenging layout, and peaceful atmosphere, it offers an experience unlike any other on the Island.
If you’re planning to visit Madeira, be sure to add Ponta do Pargo Golf Course to your itinerary for a golfing experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories.
For anyone after a golf-heavy trip, here’s some good news: the Madeira Golf Passport

(www.MadeiraGolfPassport.com)offers excellent value across the Island’s three courses. For $340 per person, you receive three complete rounds at Santo da Serra or Palheiro Golf, or a combination of both, all valid for a period of two weeks. Tee times can even be pre-booked directly with the clubs before you travel.
If you’d like to add Porto Santo to the mix, a $485 option is available. This gives you four complete rounds across Santo da Serra, Palheiro, and Porto Santo Golf, again valid for two weeks, with tee times bookable in advance.
For the keenest golfers, the $490 package includes five complete rounds at Santo da Serra and Palheiro, or a combination of both, over two weeks, with pre-bookable tee times, allowing you to tailor your holiday to meet your golfing needs.
Due to Madeira’s geographic location in the Atlantic Ocean, the Island has an abundance of fish of various kinds. Espada might be the most popular dish; it is usually fried in a batter and accompanied by fried bananas, and sometimes a passionfruit

sauce. There are many different meat dishes on Madeira, one of the most popular being espetada, which is traditionally made of large chunks of beef rubbed in garlic, salt, and bay leaf and marinated for 4 to 6 hours in Madeira wine, red wine vinegar, and olive oil, then skewered onto a bay laurel stick and left to grill over smouldering wood chips. Also, don’t leave Madeira without trying Bolo do Caco, a garlicky flatbread that seems to appear at every meal, and Poncha, a signature drink of Portugal.
The best times to visit Madeira are during spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the crowds are fewer, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Summer is perfect for beach lovers, but it can be crowded. In contrast, winter offers mild temperatures and fewer tourists, making it an ideal time to experience the Island’s waterfalls.
I had never been to Portugal, never mind Madeira, and I am already looking forward to returning. There’s something special about the Island; be it the sights, strolling the streets of Funchal, exploring the landscape and activities, or enjoying the unique golf courses, you won’t be disappointed, and it almost certainly won’t be your last time visiting Portugal.

Although is might be a grinding road as those on the Korn Ferry Tour have found out over the past year. Most gratifying watching the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, on the Dye Course at the French Lick Resort, as I am writing.
But, for most is will be a more leisurely drive filled with anticipation of playing at a Resort that is consistently rated as Top 75 in America by Golf Digest.
Anticipation : As you dream of your time, playing the Dye Course. Anticipation: Of playing the diabolical greens of the Donald Ross Course. Correct on both accounts, but the anticipation of checking into the West Baden Springs Hotel at French Lick Resort is right up there with the golf. Indeed, an unforgettable check in to say the least.
Once I check in, my first “Anticipation” is that of my first Bourbon, with jazzy blues in the background in the hotels atrium which was the largest free-span dome until the Houston
Astrodome was built in the 1960’s. Some claim it to be the “Eighth wonder of the world!”
The West Baden Springs Hotel is an architectural marvel and one of many crown jewels of the resort. The National Historic Landmark was originally built in 1902 and restored in 2007. The hotel features six circular stories with rooms and suites that offer views of the spectacular atrium.
From the time they were established in the mid-1800s, French Lick Resort’s grand hotels,
in Southern Indiana, about an hour north of Louisville, Kentucky, have been a preferred destination for guests looking to relax and rejuvenate in comfort and style. French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel have both been restored to the grandeur of their initial heyday in the early 1900s, and the resort landscape grew in 2019 with the addition of Valley Tower. Three unique hotels provide endless options for one memorable stay.
Frenck Lick Courses:
Nowhere else in the world can you play courses designed by Pete Dye and Donald Ross together at one resort. The rolling hills of southern Indiana provide a beautiful yet challenging experience with two championship courses, plus the 9-hole Valley Links and Sand Creek courses.

The Pete Dye Course: Sketched on a napkin and carved into history by Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, this course hosted the Senior PGA Championship in 2015. Senior PGA champion Colin Montgomerie called it

“one of the iconic courses” in America and one that golfers all over the world will want to play. This championship golf course on one of Indiana’s most dramatic elevation points has narrow, immaculate fairways and rugged, intense terrain. The Pete Dye Course has gained national acclaim for its 40-mile panoramic views of the southern Indiana countryside, three man-made lakes, “volcano” bunkers and a variety of elevation changes. A robust 8,100 yards from the professional tees punctuate Dye’s signature sting from vista to vista.
Don’t dare play the Dye Course and not spend some time at The Mansion at Pete Dye. Lunch, a cocktail or two or simply capture the breathtaking view of the course and the rolling hills of Southern Indiana.
Built in 1928, The Mansion at The Pete Dye Course captures the essence of the Roaring Twenties. The mansion was built by Thomas Taggart, the former owner of French Lick Springs Hotel, for his son Thomas D. Taggart and his family.
The Donald Ross Course: Imagine stepping back in time and experience the game the way it was meant to be played. Built in 1917, this award-winning course designed by renowned architect Donald Ross maintains nearly all the classic elements of its original design. Among the trademark Ross features are 80 deep-faced bunkers that can challenge even the expert. The severely undulating greens were, and still are, some of the most radically shaped and contoured in golf. A
2006 restoration ensured the integrity of this classic layout remained intact. This par-70 course has been rated the No. 2 public course in Indiana by Golfweek every year since 2011.
The Valley Links Course: A par 36, ninehole, fully walkable conversion of the 18-hole Tom Bendelow design that was original to French Lick Springs Hotel. With a park-like atmosphere with rolling fairways, Scottishstyle fescue grasses and strategically placed bunkers, experienced golfers can take it back to a championship length of nearly 3,500 yards.
The Sand Creek Course: Offers a totally new way to enjoy the game. This is a short course featuring nine holes ranging between 40 and 90 yards, playable in about 75 minutes. Look for signature features from our championship Pete Dye and Donald Ross courses, including miniature Dye volcano bunkers and Ross’ contoured greens. Perfect for golfers of all levels — beginners, families, corporate groups and seasoned golfers alike.
Resort Activities: Whether your idea of fun is bowling, bicycling, shopping, horseback riding or simply lounging by the pool, you’ll find a wealth of activities for all seasons.
French Lick Casino: 24/7 gaming floor with classic reel slots, to new interactive slots filled with bonus features, table games and sportsbook.
Spas: At both Resort Hotels, offering the
ultimate in relaxation.
The Stables: home to 27 horses who have each been carefully selected and trained by our stables manager for a minimum of two years. Among them are trail horses for the 6+ miles of scenic horseback riding trails, the resort’s two carriage horses and ponies that provide rides for the little ones.
Billiard and Bowling Pavillion: Pluto’s Alley features fun and games for all ages.
Trolley Rides, hop on for a Ride through Rail Trolley History
Indoor Pools

Sporting Ranges: 75-acre sporting ranges, featuring sporting clays and archery.
And of course, no Resort is complete without PICKLEBALL! New pickleball courts located behind French Lick Casino and in East Park at West Baden Springs Hotel. Rent paddles and balls in the Activities Center at French Lick Springs Hotel or from the front desk at West Baden Springs Hotel. Courts are available on a first-come basis.
I had the pleasure of spending time on the courts with Spencer, on my most recent visit. If you are lucky maybe you will too!

Aregional overview and why it might be time to revisit your Bucket List!
While we in the NE USA and Canada shiver through snow-covered fairways and icy roads and harsh wind chills, imagine ocean breezes and teeing off under a blazing blue sky with blue waves crashing below the cliffs. Instead of layering up, you are peeling off, sunshine on your shoulders, kangaroos grazing beside the fairway, and a crisp glass of wine waiting at the 19th hole.
For golfers from Canada and the United States, Australia represents one of the most rewarding winter golf escapes on earth.
Trade frozen greens for championship fairways, combining bucket-list golf with wildlife encounters, wine tasting, harbour cruises, and the kind of laid-back hospitality that defines Australia.
With a strong North American dollar and increasingly direct flight connections, there has never been a better time to plan your golf adventure Down Under. And for those who wish to extend their journey, the legendary courses of New Zealand are just a short flight away.
One of the biggest draws for North American travellers is the seasonal contrast. While January temperatures in New York, Boston, Chicago and Toronto dip below freezing, Australia enjoys its warmest months, averaging 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F) across most regions. Long daylight hours and dry conditions make for superb playing weather, fast greens, and endless opportunities to explore between rounds.
Australia is a vast and diverse country. Each state has its own golfing personality, and the beauty of visiting in summer is that you can combine several of them in a single journey. Non-stop flights from Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas connect directly to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. From these hubs, it is easy to explore nearby golf and wine regions by road or short domestic flight.
Most North American visitors begin their journey in Sydney, a city famous for its spar-
kling harbour, iconic skyline, and relaxed outdoor lifestyle. Golfers can tee off at New South Wales Golf Club, perched high above Botany Bay. Alister MacKenzie, during his 1926 Australian tour, likened the land to that of Pebble Beach, describing it as “a glorious combination of rocky coast, sand dunes, pine woods and cypress trees,” underscoring the site’s exceptional natural beauty.
After your round, explore Sydney’s historic Rocks district, where cobbled laneways, colonial-era architecture, and boutique galleries tell the story of the city’s early days. For leisure or a post-round adventure, the world-famous beaches of Bondi, Manly, and Coogee offer sun, surf, and scenic walks along the rugged coastline.
A short drive or tour from the city brings you to the Blue Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed region known for its dramatic cliffs, eucalyptus forests, and sweeping valleys. Hiking trails, lookouts, and charming villages like Leura and Katoomba make it a perfect day trip from Sydney, offering a breathtaking contrast to the city’s harbour-side energy.

For wine lovers, the nearby Hunter Valley is just a two-hour drive north, renowned for crisp Semillon, elegant Chardonnay, and long vineyard lunches. Staying overnight at a vineyard lodge or taking a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over the vines adds a layer of relaxation and indulgence to your golf itinerary.
Melbourne and Victoria: The Legendary Sandbelt and Coastal Adventures
From Sydney, head south to Melbourne, Australia’s sporting capital and home to the fabled Sandbelt. This region, stretching through the city’s southeast, is the heart of
Australian golf. Here you’ll find a cluster of world-class layouts including Royal Melbourne Golf Club, a fixture in global top-10 rankings and a three-time host of the Presidents Cup. The West Course, designed by Alister MacKenzie, is revered for its strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and immaculate conditioning. Playing here is a rite of passage for any serious golfer.
Nearby, Kingston Heath Golf Club is a masterpiece of compact design, often cited by professionals as one of their favourite courses anywhere. Victoria Golf Club, Metropolitan, and Yarra Yarra complete a

Sandbelt circuit that could easily fill a week of championship-level golf.
Further south is the more relaxed yet equally challenging, Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, which combines traditional parkland and natural bushland and offers a classic Australian golf experience. The North Course at Peninsula Kingswood is currently ranked No. 5 in Australia by Australian Golf Digest, reflecting its exceptional design and playability.
Off the course, Melbourne itself is a cultural hub with laneway cafés, galleries, and a thriving sports scene. Food and wine lovers will enjoy the nearby Yarra Valley, known for its cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines, which perfectly complement a Sandbelt itinerary.
For those looking to mix golf with iconic scenery, consider a drive along the Great Ocean Road. This coastal route, famed for the Twelve Apostles and rugged cliffs, provides breathtaking vistas and a unique way to experience Victoria’s diverse landscape. Golfers can combine a few rounds on the Sandbelt with a scenic coastal adventure for a truly memorable trip.
Adelaide and South Australia: Wine, Wildlife, and New Horizons
A short flight west brings you to Adelaide, a charming city with an enviable mix of beach, culture, and wine. Here,

Royal Adelaide Golf Club takes pride of place among Australia’s elite courses. With a layout that blends links-style dunes and parkland holes, and even a commuter train line crossing through the fairways, it offers both challenge and character. Designed with input from the eponymous Alister MacKenzie, Royal Adelaide has hosted multiple Australian Opens and remains a favourite among visiting players.
Beyond the city, South Australia unfolds as a paradise for wine lovers. The Barossa Valley is world-famous for bold Shiraz and historic cellar doors, while McLaren Vale, just 45 minutes south of Adelaide, offers ocean views, boutique vineyards, and inventive dining. A perfect day might start with a morning round at Royal Adelaide and end with a sunset tasting among the vines.
For those seeking something extraordinary, make your way to Kangaroo Island, a short flight or ferry ride from the mainland. Here you’ll find The Cliffs, one of Australia’s most exciting new courses, set against the island’s dramatic coastline. The course blends raw natural beauty with world-class design, offering panoramic views of the Southern Ocean and encounters with the island’s namesake kangaroos. For the ultimate indulgence, stay at the luxurious Southern Ocean Lodge, where elegant accommodations, stunning ocean vistas, and exceptional dining provide the perfect complement to your golfing adventure. Kangaroo Island itself is a wildlife haven, often called Australia’s “Galápagos,” where
Tasmania has emerged as one of the most talked-about golf destinations on the planet. Remote yet welcoming, it offers golf in its purest form. On the island’s northeast coast, Barnbougle Dunes and Barnbougle Lost Farm are ranked among the world’s top courses, evoking the windswept charm of Scotland and Ireland. The experience is authentic, natural, and unforgettable. Charter flights can take you from Melbourne, directly to the Barnbougle Resort, or you can take a commercial flight to nearby Launceston airport.
Tasmania’s capital, Hobart, has also entered the spotlight with the debut of Seven Mile Beach, a modern links carved through coastal dunes that is already earning international acclaim.
Another short flight from Melbourne, in the middle of the unforgiving Bass Strait, is King Island, home to the spectacular Cape Wickham course, which has recently surpassed Royal Melbourne in Australian Golf Digest’s ranking as the number one course in Australia. Its clifftop holes, ocean spray, and rolling fescue fairways make it one of the most visually striking courses on the planet. Together, these courses cement Tasmania and King Island as a must-visit destination for golfers seeking adventure, beauty, and pure enjoyment.
Australia’s appeal extends far beyond
make it a complete travel experience.
Kangaroos often share fairways with golfers, while kookaburras laugh from the trees. On the coast, dolphins and whales can be spotted during migration seasons, and the Great Barrier Reef offers unforgettable snorkelling and diving opportunities.
Culinary experiences are equally rewarding. Australia’s dining scene celebrates fresh, local produce and a relaxed outdoor lifestyle. Whether you are enjoying a seafood platter overlooking Sydney Harbour, tasting Shiraz in the Barossa Valley, or sampling local cheeses in Tasmania, every meal feels like part of the adventure.
What sets Australia apart is the people. Australians are famously friendly, down-toearth, and eager to share a story. Golf Clubs welcome visitors with genuine hospitality, and you will often find yourself sharing a ‘yarn’ and a drink with locals after your round.
Travel here is refreshingly simple. There is no tipping culture, and the pace is relaxed. With a straightforward visa process and safe, easy-to-navigate cities, visitors from North America will feel instantly at home.
Australia offers excellent value for North Americans, especially with the U.S. and Canadian dollars strong against the Australian currency. Green fees at top coursCape Wickham

ral backdrops are unmatched.
Accommodation options range from seaside resorts and luxury city hotels to vineyard retreats and boutique lodges. Domestic travel is affordable, and low-cost airlines make it easy to connect major golf hubs.
For peace of mind and seamless logistics, consider working with a specialist like Golf Explorer, an Australian tour operator experienced in crafting tailor-made itineraries for North American visitors. “Our absolute speciality is crafting tailor made tours to suits each clients’ circumstances, from a luxury 7-night trip to 3 months touring experience and anywhere in between,” says owner Shaun Green, who has over 30 years of expe-
rience in the golf tourism industry. From tee times to transport, hotels and day tours, they ensure everything runs smoothly, allowing you to focus on the golf and the good times.
Add New Zealand: The Perfect Finishing Touch

ape Cod, Massachusetts offers golfers a chance to enjoy the game near the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures on the peninsula say mild well into autumn and the courses are in great shape thanks to cooler nights.
From championship 18-hole layouts, resort courses and charming, old nine-hole tracks, The Cape offers myriad golf options. Rom sweet nine-hole layouts to 18-hole “championship” courses, Cape Cod has great golf located within an hour or so drive of one another. Plus, the Cape’s courses will remain open year-round weather permitting.
When not golfing, you can get away from it all on the beaches, hiking trails, and shopping in cozy villages. Check out the numerous seafood restaurants and lobster shanties, where you can sample freshly-caught seafood and enjoy a beverage while sitting on a picnic table and gazing out into a harbor or the rolling ocean waves.
The National Seashore that is located on the tip of the Cape features a very informative visitor’s center, as well as a number of wildlife sanctuaries for walking and biking and unfettered strolls along the beach. And it’s easy to find suitable accommodations, whether it is on the ocean or bay side of The Cape, a posh hotel in Chatham or a weathered cottage in the dunes in Wellfleet.
Thanks to Golfing Magazine’s comprehensive Course Play Stimulus Program, our subscribers can try out a number of courses on Cape Cod. Check out the details of this can’t miss offer in this issue. Call 860-563-1633, or visit www.FreeGolf.net to sign up.
Here are some courses to play on your autumn Cape Cod road trip.
Just over the Bourne Bridge on Cape Cod, F almouth Country Club (www.falmouthcountryclub.com) feels like classic New England golf. With 27 holes, a solid practice setup, and a well-stocked clubhouse, it’s got everything you need for a full day on the course.
The Osprey is a parkland style course with heavy tree coverage, ponds, thick rough, and lush fairways. The round opens with three straightforward holes, but once you cross the street and get to #4, the course starts to show its character. Hole 4 is an uphill dogleg right with a huge tree guarding the right side of the fairway. Cutting the corner is very difficult so you better aim it left and try to carry it at least 230. If you are short of this spot, then you are going to have to shape a shot over, or around, the big tree. Hole 7 is another tough dogleg requiring an accurate shot off the tee box. Hitting it 200 yards to the right side of the fairway will give you a shot at the narrow and long green.
The final three holes are a tough closing
stretch that tests your focus and patience.. I like the combination of wide and narrow holes and the hidden undulations of the fairways.
The 9-hole Talon course is a completely different golf experience, and what makes the course so compelling for me. This is the perfect course to walk before or after going to the beach on a hot summer day. It is wide open so you can let loose and have fun while trying to score low. These characteristics are also what make it a beginner and family-friendly spot on the Cape.
Blue Rock Golf Course (www.BlueRockGolfCourse.com) in South Yarmouth, MA is a beautiful, well-manicured par-3 in the middle of the Cape. It will change your mind about how you feel about short courses because of the superb quality and challenges you experience when you play there.
The course has received local recognition over the past few years for its great experience, quality, and playability. Blue Rock has been voted “Best Golf Course on Cape Cod” five years in a row by readers of the Cape Cod Times. In 2024, it was voted best Mid-Cape golf course by the readers of Cape Cod Life, and was ranked as a top 5 par-3 course by www.golfspan.com.
The top handicap hole is number, playing at a robust 255 yards from the tips. Hole number 9 is rated one of the Cape’s Top 18 holes,

playing 170 yards from the back markers. The hole requires the experienced player to navigate a well-placed tee shot over water to a large, undulating kidney shaped green. Par on this hole is a great score.
Blue Rock offers everything a golfer would want for a trip to the Cape: an all-grass driving range with multiple targets, two putting greens, a chipping green, and a quaint pro shop stocked with gear, equipment, drinks, and snacks. They also offer memberships, private lessons, clinics, golf schools, and leagues.
The course was designed by Geoffrey Cornish in 1962 and is locally owned by Davenport Companies. I had the pleasure of meeting the Director of Communication, Matt Pitta, who highlighted the course’s history and charm. From my pre-round range session and chipping practice to grabbing snacks/drinks at the turn, to finishing with a delicious meal on the patio,I had a great time, and this is why Blue Rock is a must-visit course for any New Englander.
The course is a typical Cornish design, utilizing the natural landscape to weave the course through hills, trees, and a long, narrow pond. Blue Rock has four sets of tees with the white tees playing at 2520 yards for a par of 54. Most of the holes range from 88-170, except for hole #5 which is a loooong 240 yards.
Dennis, Massachusetts boasts two championship-caliber courses that will challenge your game and your mental toughness. The Pines and The Highlands (www.DennisGolf.com) are more than just fairways and greens; they’re experiences crafted for golfers of all levels.
Both courses are meticulously manicured by a dedicated team. From the moment you tee off, you’ll be immersed in lush fairways that cradle your drives. The greens are cut tight, ensuring a consistent roll on every putt. And let’s not forget the breathtaking Cape Cod scenery that serves as the ultimate backdrop to your round at both courses.
The Pines is a true test of accuracy. Towering pines guard its narrow fairways, demanding precision from tee to green. There are a lot of trees but they are spread out so you can find your wayward tee shot and still be able to put it back in play. The front-9 has some subtle doglegs that create the need for some shot-shaping off the tee. The par-3s on the front are basic layouts with greens guarded by bunkers.
The back-9 is where legends are made –prepare to navigate treacherous doglegs and a monster par-5 that will test your nerves. Their version of the ‘Amen Corner’ is holes 10, 11, and 12. These three holes can make or break
your round if you’re not careful. Holes 10 and 11 are both doglegs right that form a ying-yang layout around a pond. Tee shots need to avoid the water on the right side of the fairways to have a chance at par. Hole 10 has a wide downhill fairway, but an uphill approach shot to the green. Hole 11 is the opposite as you make your way around the pond. This fairway is a little narrower and plays uphill so you need to give it some muscle. Then you have a downhill shot to the green. After those you get to #12. This is a boomerang shaped hole where the ideal landing area from the tee is around 180 yards. Oh ya…and the fairway is very narrow with a huge ridge running down the middle of it that tilts from right to left. The people in the pro shop told me to play this hole backwards. Hit iron off the tee then hybrid/wood for your second shot. If you make it through these three holes without ripping up your scorecard then you will coast to the finish line.
The Highlands offers a more open layout but don’t be fooled – its subtle slopes and elevation changes will keep you on your toes. Most of the fairways have undulations and tiers that can roll your ball right or left. What sets this course apart from others on the Cape is the greens. There are a variety of false-fronts, slopes, and tiers you must deal with once you make it on the dance floor so it’s tough to two-

putt here confidently.
Hole 6 is the #1 handicap, and for good reason. You hit your tee shot uphill to a bulge in the fairway at about 220 yards. Your approach shot is then 185 yards even more uphill to the green. The hill is so steep you can’t see the surface of the green and have to hope you hit it the right distance. Hole 7 is a nice par-3 after the treacherous 6th, but it has a steep ridge running through the middle of it, severing the green into two tiers. If you are not on the same tier as the pin you will have trouble making par. Hole 13 was a real challenge because the green slopes from back to front with a huge hump in the middle. It is also a false front so if you hit it short or put spin on it, it’s rolling back towards the fairway.
After conquering the course, reward yourself at the Par Bar (Pines) or The Eagles Nest (Highlands). Enjoy savory sandwiches and ice-cold beverages inside near the bar or outside on the patios. The restaurants are both run by Joel Finne, and offer similar menus with many high quality options for breakfast and lunch.

The Captains Golf Course ( www.CaptainsGolfCourse.com ) in Brewster, MA is home to two championship level courses in the heart of Cape Cod. The Port and The Starboard courses
are 18-hole layouts that provide fantastic golf and beautiful scenery for golfers of all skill levels. The courses were designed by the iconic Cornish, Silva & Mungeam team, and the layouts on each showcase their creativity and ability to shape the holes around the natural habitat. I had the pleasure of playing The Port course and it was a great experience.
The Port course is a par 72 that plays at 6154 yards from the white tees. The course has five sets of tees so every golfer can play at a distance they are comfortable with. This includes a Family tee box on each hole, which
is significantly shorter than the red tees and provides a great opportunity for beginners or young golfers to start enjoying the game.
One of the best holes is the 573-yard, par-five eighth. A pond guards the putting surface and there are several large fairway bunkers to complicate matters.
The Starboard course plays around 6,800 yards and has a slope of 122. It’s a bit more “player friendly” than its sister layout, with wider fairways, large greens, and fewer bunkers than the Port Course, which makes it more suitable for midand higher handicap players. Number 18 is a great finishing hole, a 534-yard par-five that can be reached in two by big hitters.
Kings Way Golf Club ( www.KingsWayGC.com ) in Yarmouth Port, MA is an amazing course located in the middle of Cape Cod. As an executive course situated within a community of townhomes, it offers golf, tennis and walking trails. The course is designed to provide a quick, challenging round for a memorable experience.
Designed by renowned golf architect Brian Silva, golfers can see his characteristic layout patterns throughout. You can expect to make intriguing shot selections, see cleverly placed bunkers, and enjoy a course that encourages you to play strategically. It plays at just under 4000 yards and is a par 60, and designed for

efficiency and fun. The course has three par-4s and one par-5 and the rest are par-3s. It is a great opportunity to play a full round of golf that won’t take up half of your day. It is located just off route 6, right before the major traffic backs up when going to the Outer Cape.
Despite being an executive course, Kings Way has some teeth! It is full of short holes that present a lot of challenges. The sand bunkers are huge, and the greens are lightning fast. If you think you can get out of there under par because it is so short, think again. This collection of par-3s will test your golf shot and your mental toughness. There is no letting up as you deal with huge elevation changes from tee to green.
You will use every club in your bag as the par-3s range from 145-200 yards. The par-4s and reachable par-5 will likely require a driver off the tee. The true test of this course, and any par 3, is that you have little margin for error. If you miss a green, then you must chip it close to save par. You don’t have the luxury of correcting an errant tee shot with a great approach. I played the course right at my handicap of +11 for a 71. There were some shots that I left out there and a few lost balls, but I had a great time trying to navigate the natural contours of this classic Cape Cod layout.
It is a shorter course that provides a fast
round, but the draw of Kings Way is its variety. You could play there two days in a row and shoot completely different scores. The sloped greens, huge bunkers, and drastic elevation changes will present a new challenge each time you play. The complexities combined with the overall quality of the course are why you should take the trip to Yarmouth Port.
Looking for lodging during your stay? The Aiden by Best Western hotel, managed by Brenda Smith, is conveniently located in Yarmouth on Route 28. Rates are very reasonable and include a continental breakfast for their guests. The rooms are spacious and clean. Stay and Play golf packages are available. (www.bestwestern.com/aiden/west-yarmouth)
Want lunch or dinner at a true Cape Cod local landmark? Try Captain Parker’s Pub (www.captainparkers.com) in West Yarmouth. They are known for their creamy New England style clam chowder and fish sandwiches. The fish and chips were outstanding as well. They offer a full bar menu and local craft beers for the thirsty traveler.
The Red Cottage Restaurant is an awardwinning spot nearby that has smalltown diner vibes but a huge selection of authentic flavor. Recently named it the best breakfast restaurant in Cape Cod in 2024 by Tastingtable.com, The Red Cottage Restaurant serves up classic
favorites as well as creative combinations. It’s a great spot to enjoy a hearty breakfast of thick bacon, eggs, and hand cut home fries. Or if you didn’t have enough lobster at Blue Rock, you can try their lobster benedict. Either way, grab a seat at the counter and enjoy this unique throwback diner.
Skipper Chowder House is another spot for local seafood and American cuisine. Yes, this is the Cape so of course I am going to highlight where you can get the freshest seafood. They have traditional seafood dishes like steamers, fried clams, and stuffies but what you really need to try is the “Fried” Clam Chowder. Or chowdah as they say on the Cape. It is six mini chowder cakes deep fried in a panko breadcrumb crust served with breadcrumbs on the side.
The Summer Shanty is located at the Bass River Marina. This is the place to go for waterfront dining after a day on the golf course. They have signature cocktails to enjoy with your locally sourced meal. The menu includes raw bar options, tons of fresh seafood, lobster 5 different ways, appetizers, sandwiches, and even rice bowls. They also claim to have the best view for sunsets on the Cape.
