You’ll feel it the moment you enter the community. The tree lined streets, lush landscaping and brick walkways. With its magnificent Clubhouse as it’s centerpiece, the feeling is traditional and memorable. Then there’s the worldclass Baywood Greens golf course that winds it way through the community, creating backyard vistas like nothing else around. And if that weren’t enough, there are marinas with boat slips with access to Rehoboth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, beaches, restaurants and shopping all just minutes away.
Known as the “Augusta of the North,” Baywood Greens is by far the most visually spectacular golf course in Delaware and is consistently ranked #1 by Golf Digest’s Best in State.

Heron Glen Golf Course
The Course You’ll Call Home
By, Sean Fawcett
There are so many wonderful places to get to play a great round of golf in The Garden State, but a round at Heron Glen Golf Course is truly memorable.
The only Hunterdon County Golf Course, and managed by Kemper Sports, Heron Glen, built from the old Kuster Dairy Farm in Ringoes combines top quality conditions and a links-style layout with first class service to provide members, guests and visiting golfers a private country club feel at a premiere public golf course setting.
Arriving onto the Central Jersey golf scene in 2002, Heron Glen Golf Course has consistently ranked itself as one of the State’s higher rated and most beloved golf courses. HGGC ranks #1 by Golfer’s Choice in the Top 20 Public Golf Courses in New Jersey.
Heron Glen is a regulation style golf course with 18 holes spanning 7065 yards and a par of 72. The course features Bent Grass tees, fairways, and greens, designed by architect Dan Schlegel in 2002. Golfers can enjoy GPS power carts, a driving range, and are welcome to walk the course. The course has a rating of 74 and a slope of 138.
Heron Glen utilizes the natural contours as its primary defense, with sand traps positioned to great effect. Although there are no lakes or ponds, wetlands dot the property
and Schlegel uses them, especially, in each of the par fives. Shot-making, strategy and patience are key to making it around Heron Glen.
The course’s signature hole isn’t one of the par fives, however, but one of its par threes. Playing around 180 yards from the Blues, the tee shot on Hole No. 5 plays from an elevated tee box to an elongated, threetiered putting surface surrounded by native fescue grass.
“ Five is a really, really good par 3,” said
HGGC’s PGA General Manager Tim Ward. “ The elongated, three-tiered green creates some challenging pin positions.”
Hole 3, a medium sized Par 5, gives long hitters a chance to go for the green in two make birdie, or maybe even eagle. The long dogleg left Par Five 10th headline’s a very rare three par five Back Nine. Providing players will more birdie, and par, chances than a typical, and traditional, layout of four par fives, two per side, would.
“ Not many courses have five par fives
with three on The Back,” said Ward, who’s been with HGGC since it opened 23 years ago. “ It gives good golfers some extra opportunities to makes some birdies. It’s one of the unique things about Heron Glen our golfers really like.”
The open layout and peaceful, serene countryside setting provided by Heron Glen keeps golfers coming back.
“ It’s just a really well-designed golf course,” said Ward. “ It’s a par-72 with an unique mix of par trees, fours and fives that all golfers of all skill levels and ages will have a great time playing. In 2013 we were voted “most female friendly” in the state. The same year we were also voted “Top Place to Play under $80”. Even after Covid, we kept our greens fees low. We’re all about the golfers here at Heron Glen.”
Attention to golfers and their playing, practicing and social needs with their GPS carts and practice and dining amenities cater to all golfers of all ages and abilities.
“I like to play it late in the day. You can almost hear the cows who used to be on the old Kuster farm. The old silo on the 4th Hole is kind of a cool feature, too. Play it once, and you’ll never forget it.”

Tillinghast Original Restored by Architect Gil Hanse; Dual Courses Master Plan Complete
Amulti-year restoration of the Upper Course at Baltusrol Golf Club, led by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, is now complete.
Originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the Upper Course opened in 2021 as part of Baltusrol’s historic “Dual Courses” initiative, the first contiguous design and build of 36 holes in the United States. The Lower Course, also designed by Tillinghast and restored by Hanse, reopened in 2021, and is slated to host the 2029 PGA Championship. The two different, yet equal courses have been a mainstay of championship golf since 1901, including being the only golf club in America to have hosted both the Men’s and Women’s U.S. Open Championships on both of its golf courses.
pare a long-range master plan that included both golf courses, with particular attention to restoring Tillinghast’s design features and shot values. Having undergone numerous revisions, large and small, in their century-long existence, the club wanted to return the purity of Tillinghast’s original concepts to both courses.
Lower and Upper Courses to Tillinghast’s original vision, we have positioned the Club to ensure its place in golf history and created golf courses that members and guests of all skill levels will enjoy playing for many years to come,” said Matt Wirths, Master Plan Committee Co-Chairman.
Armed with a large collection of historical documents— primarily aerial photographs— Hanse and his associates examined the Upper Course hole by hole, noting where changes over the years had minimized what was originally Tillinghast or had given modern equipment an unfair advantage.
Hanse was retained in 2018 to help pre-
“We are confident that by restoring the
“It became apparent through the features, character, topography, and the views, that the setting of the Upper is a much more natural golf course than the Lower,” said Hanse. “The features are really interesting, and because the
topography allowed it to happen, some are bolder, especially the opening set of greens.”
Changes were made to every hole. Teeing areas on the Upper Course have increased by 50,000 square feet, with expanded teeing options—including the addition of new forward tees—allowing golfers to enjoy the course from multiple distances. The Upper Course greens were expanded by over 65% to nearly 165,000 square feet. (By comparison, the Lower Course greens increased by 22% to 155,000 square feet.)
According to Hanse, restoring the greens to their original size and scale created “more fun hole locations” and makes play “more interesting.” And the two-green complex on hole 14, an original Tillinghast feature that had disappeared over the years, was recreated.
Critical to maintaining the character of Baltusrol’s courses is the preservation of the “subtleties” of the greens, as well as retaining the turf grass native to the micro-climate of these two courses. The existing “push-up greens” were initially shaped with native soil. The new greens, built to USGA specifications, provide the grounds team greater control to manage moisture levels and maintain firmer
conditions throughout the season. 3D computer modeling was used to create laser scans of the greens before, during, and after construction., and after construction.
The removal of trees around the course enlarged the field of play and re-established the beauty and scale of views. Some fairways were widened, and length was added to several holes as were forward tees.
New native areas have been introduced to increase the amount of natural habitat, reduce the amount of acreage that needs maintenance, and, says Hanse, “create a different texture through the entire landscape.” As for bunkers, “Every single one of them was reshaped and rebuilt in the locations Tillinghast envisioned where appropriate, and also in the style that Tillinghast presented.”
“I think because of the scale of the topography, Tillinghast was emboldened to build bigger features, bigger bunkers, bigger everything, and it sat in the land a little bit better,” Hanse said.
Out of sight, the course infrastructure was updated with new irrigation and a subterranean PrecisionAire system to make conditions more predictable, with the course able to dry
faster and present better, healthier turf. These infrastructure improvements are critical for the agronomics to match Tillinghast’s design intent of being fast and firm. New software provides the Club’s grounds crew with realtime data, including air velocity and air temperatures moving through the units, as well as the ability to control each unit remotely.
“I think Baltusrol can stand toe to toe with any 36-hole complex in this country,” Hanse stated. “It’s the variety. It’s the difference, and the fact that the Lower Course is situated on the lower section of the property, and the Upper has some amazing topography. I think both now have a consistency as it relates to Tillinghast in his design and the way he presented and visualized those golf courses.”
The National Historic Landmark plaque on display in the clubhouse sums it up: The Lower and Upper Courses at Baltusrol Golf Club, created between 1918 and 1924, form the seminal work of designer A.W. Tillinghast. It is here that he established his principles of golf course architecture and “the course beautiful,” providing golfers with a strategic test set within a naturalistic landscape.

Golf Course Architect Stephen Kay
By, Sean Fawcett
Certain parts of the country’s golfing landscape are just synonymous with particular golf course architects. Golf in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and you’ll likely be teeing it up at a popular Willard Byrd, Tim Cate or Dan Maples design. In New Jersey, there’s a very good chance that you’ll be playing a Stephen Kay golf course, or some other that he’s done some significant renovations upon.
A long-time instructor at Rutgers University’s renowned Professional Turf Management Program, Kay is the architect of Williamstown’s Scotland Run Golf Club and The Architects Club in Lopatcong. The Architects Club is what its name says, a course featuring holes inspired by Kay after most of the Golf’s greatest architects like Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast and C.B. MacDonald, Hugh Wilson, Alister MacKenzie, Walter Travis and St. Andrews’ Old Tom Morris.
Most recently, Kay opened his newest course, Old Bridge
Golf Club at Rose Lambertson, or “The Rose”, in Middlesex County, which Golfing featured in our Spring 2024 issue.
The Rose features generous links-lined fairways with wetlands and ponds, sustainable irrigation, several Risk-Reward opportunities and sloping greens, including a rare Biarrittz green, an unique putting surface with a raised Back and Front portions with a deep valley right in the middle.
Raised in nearby West Chester County, New York, and a Jersey Shore transplant, Kay is, perhaps, most famous for his
many, and fun-to-play golf courses in New Jersey’s golfing mecca, The Atlantic City Region. Among Kay’s most played tracks are three of AC’s favorites, Blue Heron Pines, Harbor Pines and McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links. Blue Heron and Harbor Pines, both classic tree-lined parkland-style gems, are located in Cologne and Egg Harbor Township, respectively, opened in the mid 1990s. McCullough’s, meanwhile, opened in the early 2000s, right across from Harbor Pines, is, like Architects, an inspirational layout featuring tree-less links par 3s, and Fours and Fives based on many of the world-famous British Open holes of Scotland, England and Ireland.
Old Bridge GC
Harbor Pines GC
“Blue Heron Pines Golf Club located in Egg Harbor City New Jersey is a Stephen Kay designed that sits in the Pinelands of South Jersey approximately 25 minutes from Atlantic City. Stephen has designed a few other golf courses in the area including Harbor Pines and McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links,” said Bluer Heron’s PGA Director of Golf Wally Tittelmayer.
“The layout at Blue Heron Pines, Stephen designed is a very fair but challenging golf course. The course rolls and winds through the pine trees on the property. Each hole has its own unique character with no two holes liking similar, creating a fun and enjoyable round of golf. He framed many of the par 4’s and 5’s using fairway bunkers to create great site lines off the tee and rolling fairways to provide the golfer an opportunity to position themselves for easier approaches into the greens. Most greens are well bunkered and water hazards come into play on a handful of holes. The nice feature is he has provided the golfer with the ability to run their shot onto the putting surfaces without a forced carry on most of the holes. Utilizing all the features of the land provided his routing is exceptional, with some dogleg left and dogleg right holes, variation in length on his par 3’s from the short #11 over a pond to the long and demanding #16 with a green that sits up on a hill and runs away from the tee shot. Overall, it is a fun layout for golfers of various skill levels with a ton of character and charm.”
“The variety of golf in Atlantic City is really amazing,” said Kay.
“South Jersey is such a great area to golf. It’s one of the best golfing destinations in the whole country. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of so many of its courses and to play and live here.”
Over the past three to four years, as well, Kay, a master course renovator, who’s rejuvenated venerated golf courses like The Brigantine Links, and Philadelphia’s Union’ League Torresdale Country Club( a Ross course formerly known as Frankford-Torresdale Country Club), has had a huge hand in modernizing two more of South Jersey’s classic courses, Hammonton’s Pinelands Golf Club, and Atlantis Golf Course, part of the ocean County Parks and recreation Department in Mystic Islands near Tuckerton. At Atlantis, a George Fazio design opened in 1962, Kay’s work in irrigation, resodding greens, tree removal and reshaping, and shrinking, the
course’s many, and formerly penal, greenside sand traps making the course even more fun to play for County residents and visiting golfers alike.
“Stephen has done a tremendous job renovating our course,” said Atlantis’ supervising greenskeeper, Josh Moore. “ The improvements with the new bunkering and the greens he’s helped us with over the past four to five years has been phenomenal. He’s one of the most knowledgeable guys in turf and architecture I know.”
New Jersey, one of the original, and main, birthplaces of the Game of Golf, has had many of the Game’s greatest golf course architects build courses here, and Stephen Kay is one of the very best to do so.

THE BEST BALL FOR YOU
We’ve maintained that balls with a urethane cover offer better potential for short-game spin, and that difference, combined with overall consistency and excellent full-swing performance particularly off the tee, make them a better investment for the better and aspiring golfer, regardless of handicap. Therefore, we divided golf balls here into multilayer urethane models and non-urethane models. Multilayer urethane balls offer a full suite of performance functionality, while the best non-urethane balls generally focus on a softer feel with more chance for distance. However, they lack the high spin found in urethane-cover balls for finesse shots around the green.
Urethance Balls
Mizuno Pro S has a soft feel for maximum greenside control while the thin cover, thick mantle layer boost ball speed and reduces driver spin. The dimple pattern helps promote higher drives and flatter wedges.
The OnCore Vero X1 provides a midtrajectory option for players who prioritize control. The thicker cover than XP2 model increases greenside spin while the metal-infused mantle controls spin on tee shots
The Mizuno Pro X provides a higher flight with more speed than the S model while the thin cover, thick mantle layer boost ball speed and reduces driver spin. You can expect more long-game spin than the S model.
The OnCore Vero X2 provides a higher trajectory, firmer feel than the XP1 model. The metalinfused mantle controls spin on drives and a new rubber formula increases resiliency.
The enhanced OnCore ELIXR golf ball features the same three-piece construction and proprietary perimeter weighting as the original. The polybutadiene core has been enhanced for higher ball speed with even more carry and roll. A firmer cover with a 350-dimple pattern (up from 318) and mid-compression delivers a pure feel off the club face and gives the new ELIXR superior greenside control & durability. Built for intermediate or advanced players
Snell’s new urethane cover compound, XV3, is a complete revision developed for the 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0 golf ball. The 4.0 is a 4-Piece Construction with a high speed, low spin core for Long Distance and mid to high short iron spin. The additional mantle layer provides long iron control with a soft fell for greenside control. Prime 4.0 is the designed for the player carrying his or her 7-iron more than 165 yards.
Titleist AVX golf balls are designed for players seeking a low-flying and low-spinning golf ball with very soft feel and excellent greenside control. The latest generation AVX was reengineered from core to cover to deliver longer distance from tee to green, more greenside spin and control, and an even softer feel.
The 3.0 has 3-Piece Construction and the New XV3 Urethane Cover. This ball is built golfers with average swing speeds. The high speed, low spin core provides long distance and mid-high iron spin. The soft feel cover provides greenside control. Prime 3.0 is the designed for the player carrying their 7-iron between 125 to 165 yards.
The Pro V1 is optimal for players looking for soft feel and a flatter trajectory. The new core provides rebound and iron/ wedge spin while maintaining low driver spin. The mantle also contributes speed while lowering long-game spin.
The 2.0 uses a urethane cover around a single, large core. It is designed to get the spin performance with a large core that gets increasingly firmer toward its outer edges. Snell believes the potential added spin from the cover gives average golfers a performance advantage that leads to lower scores. The 2.0 is recommended for golfers who carry a 7-iron less than 125 yards,
The Pro V1x flies higher, spins more in the long game and has a slightly firmer feel then the Pro V1. The mantle layer lowers long-game spin while adding speed.
