Celebrating West Shore women making a difference Welcome to our inaugural Women of the West Shore. We hope you enjoy this special edition and we welcome your feedback. Inside you’ll find interesting stories and profiles on some prominent women who work on the West Shore. To kick off this celebration, we’ve talked to a mix of civil servants, businesswomen and not-for-profit executives. These talented individuals offer a good example of the many diverse talents that exist on the West Shore, in positions that you may not be aware of. For example, we go behind the scenes at the City of Langford with their top engineer, and talk about a passion for firefighting with the District of Metchosin’s celebrated fire chief. Thanks go out to our sponsors, Thrifty Foods, View Royal Casino and the Four Points Sheraton Victoria Gateway. We would not have been able to hold our first-ever Women of the West Shore gala event without you. So, what’s happening on the West Shore? We have our mayoral races taking place in each of the five municipalities and are pleased to again see a strong showing of women running for councillors and trustees. Be sure to vote, as it is an important part of our democratic right. At this time of the year, we especially remember the many people who fought and even died for that right. Some of the seemingly stalled projects on the West Shore are once again humming with activity and this is a great sign for the economy. We’ve seen some new businesses set up on the West Shore, such as Quality Foods and the Gap along with the iconic Capital Iron; they are all welcome. The Eagle Creek Village project at the corner of Helmcken Road and Watkiss Way is abuzz every day, as is the Westridge residential/commercial project on Wale Road and the accompanying hotel development; these promise to be great additions to the

Town of View Royal and City of Colwood. The fitness community is well represented by our hot yoga and martial arts studios and rec centres, with the promise of the West Shore YM-YWCA opening in 2015.

All of this bodes well for economically sound and healthy Western Communities, with many choices for all those who live and work here. So sit back and grab a coffee or a glass of wine. We hope you enjoy the stories.

LOCAL WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Seniors housing facilitator all about working with people Marilyn (Micky) Fleming, CGA, President & CEO of Cherish Community Living Before Micky Fleming founded Cherish Community Living Ltd. in 2012, she went out and personally spoke with over 400 seniors about what it was they were looking for in senior’s residences. That’s the way that Fleming approaches all of her business dealings; innovation based on knowledge. “I wanted to fully understand what my customers needed … what they were apprehensive about and what would fulfill their (requirements),” she says. A certified management accountant by training, it’s the way Fleming has approached every one of her work experiences, including the nine years she worked as the chief financial officer of a tech firm in Calgary, her work in the lumber industry and a host of other experiences. In 2002 she became interested in the challenges of seniors living projects and by 2004 her company had designed, built and was managing the Alexander Mackie Lodge, a seniors complex in the heart of Langford. In 2012, with the founding of Cherish, Fleming took on the challenge of managing other properties in addition to the Mackie complex. Her company is now engaged in a unique new seniors-oriented project called Cherish at Central Park.

High-paced business is slightly different for women, according to Fleming. “I recently went to a business conference where there were 300 registrants. Three of us were women,” she says. “It’s always a challenge.” Fleming says there’s often a disconnect between what male business associates and clients expect and what they experience once they get down to work. “You just have to be confident and forge ahead, forget about the gender thing. “For a long time women have had to work to overcome the ‘golf course; locker room’ business deal’ mentality and carve out a different way to do business, she says. “Once people see that you’re capable, you get accepted very quickly.” In her current career, Fleming feels the female perspective is, in fact, invaluable. “I understand and empathize with the seniors who form our client base. I can feel their concern about loss of independence and personal freedom, and it’s possible that my approach to their needs is more sensitive and responsive as a result.” Whatever the cause, Fleming’s approach works. Her business success has earned her awards as Citizen of the Year in 2005, Seniors Housing Developer of the Year in 2009 and the 2011 Business Leadership Award. In her spare time Fleming loves travel, boating, skiing and learning languages. “Lately my recreation time has been pretty limited,” she admits. “But my work is so rewarding, I really don’t mind too much.”

Shopping second-hand becomes stylish trend in Langford Carolyn Barter, owner Baja Rosi’s Consignment Clothing Some may say the name Baja Rosi’s does more to evoke images of a Mexican saloon than a consignment store for high-quality, gently used clothing, but owner Carolyn Barter doesn’t mind. “When I was thinking about a name for the store, I remembered sharing a drink called Baja Rosa with my friends, and to me, it made me think about a colourful woman sitting on beach selling clothing items. It’s a name that people remember, and we’ve built our brand around it,” she says. Barter’s store, located at 797 Goldstream Ave., gives local consumers a chance to recycle their own topquality clothing while finding new, recycled treasures to cherish. “I really wanted to create an environment where people are friends,” she says. “A comfortable place where women can share with one another. A place where they would shop regularly and where we would get to know them, their styles and sizes – and their names.” Barter loves the social aspect of her career and says she is happiest interacting with her customers.

LOCAL WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Langford director has engineered herself a great career Michelle Mahovlich Director of Engineering, City of Langford A 2013 report prepared by the University of Manitoba showed that Canadian women are seriously underrepresented in engineering, both in enrolment and degrees awarded. British Columbia fared the worst in that study, with women representing only 16.3 per cent of that group, as opposed to the 17.7% national average. Michelle Mahovlich, director of engineering for the City of Langford, is bucking that trend. She hopes to inspire young women to consider entering the profession, by approaching the job with a high level of excitement and competence. Originally from Ontario, she earned an undergraduate degree at McMaster University before moving to the West Coast, where she earned her masters of engineering at UBC. She worked first for a company in Ontario and then with a Vancouver engineering firm; both were jobs that gave her an extraordinary opportunity to travel around the continent doing field work. “I’ve travelled up and down the West Coast … spent time up around Hudson Bay,” Mahovlich said. “I’ve travelled a lot and seen a lot of places … and it’s been amazing.” She accepted her current job in 2012,

a position that has seen her oversee both public works and numerous capital construction projects. “Being a woman has never held me back,” she said. “Oh, when I first started out in Ontario there may have been some suspicion about whether I could do the job, but it didn’t take too long to realize that it had more to do with my age and experience than about being a woman. My gender has never been an issue.” Getting that message across to young women today is important and something Mahovlich enjoys. “I’ve participated in career panels at universities and high schools and if my being there provides a role model, that’s great. I don’t focus on gender, just on not limiting yourself.” Naturally, she also tries to pass on her passion for engineering. “You get to help research, plan and design things … and when they’re done, there’s this amazing sense of accomplishment at having been a part of the whole thing. It’s very cool.” Perhaps her most personal challenge is trying to inspire her 16-year-old daughter to enter a career in science. “She is really very academically inclined and I look at her marks and say things like ‘Wow, look at those math marks’,” Mahovlich said. It’s an approach that may have already bore fruit. “She recently talked about going into environmental science. I hope she does.”

LOCAL WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Langford financial planning expert working to help clients prosper Dale Collins Certified Financial Planner, owner, Prosperity Planning For Dale Collins, the role of a financial planner is all about building personal relationships. Her passion involves helping clients articulate their dreams and then to develop a plan for achieving those dreams. “So much is possible if people develop a plan and then stick to it,” she says. That’s why, in 2005, after a 10-year career with a Vancouver Island credit union, she decided to branch out on her own as a certified financial planner. “I was frustrated by the limitations I had working within a financial institution. We were moved around a lot and it didn’t seem to me that those personal relationships were something that the large institution valued or wanted,” Collins says. “Naturally, I was scared to death at first, being on my own, but it wasn’t long before past customers were coming to me for help. It was amazing.”

It wasn’t long before referrals from existing clients were providing Collins with a wide variety of people, all needing slightly different financial services. It’s that diverse client base that presents her with new challenges on a daily basis. “This job is so cool, because everyone is so different. In the morning I can be helping a young couple figure out how to save enough money to get into a home of their own, and in the afternoon it might be an elderly person trying to plan their estate in a way that will leave their life’s legacy to their family and not the tax system. It’s so very rewarding.” Collins views her role as both a planner and a coach; and like a coach it means providing some direction, and sometimes holding clients accountable, for stumbles along the way. “I may have to be the one who says that buying an expensive new car right now isn’t a good idea. It isn’t always something that a client wants to hear, but they trust that I have their best interests in mind. Sometimes they even listen.” The same planning principles

that Collins uses with her clients are applied to her own life and career. After working on her own for a number of years, she founded Prosperity Planning in 2010. Her financial planning firm employs two fulltime staff and she works closely with another professional. “We just recently acquired a new building and are continuing to grow the business while maintaining the personal touch that is critical to what we do,” Collins says. “We’re always striving to be better.” But in case anyone should view the life of a financial planner as a conservative, staid existence, Collins makes a point of dispelling that stereotype. “Life is for living,” she says. These days she spends her time water skiing, hiking, cycling and downhill skiing. She loves cooking and entertaining and has a zest for life that makes people appreciate her company. She also travels. When one of her daughters (she has two, aged 23 and 21) was working in Asia, Collins went to visit. “It gave me a chance to hike part of the Great Wall of China. It was a dream come true.”

Photo contributed

Dale Collins sees her professional role not only as a financial guide, but a coach to help clients through their life-planning decisions. Of course, according to Collins, it’s only appropriate that she achieves her own dreams while helping others

achieve their own. “I want to show people what is possible, if you only follow a plan.”

Female fire chief brings unique qualities to the position Stephanie Dunlop, Fire Chief District of Metchosin Early in her employment history, Stephanie Dunlop was in a rather gender neutral job in corporate insurance. Then, in 1998, she started volunteering with a fire department in the Okanagan. Dunlop has never looked back. Her volunteer firefighting position quickly evolved into a paid position, one she held for five years. When she arrived in Metchosin, her passion for firefighting led her to again volunteer for the fire department. It wasn’t long before she went on staff and in 2008 she was appointed part-time fire chief for the district. Two years later, that position became full-time, making Dunlop one of a select group of women serving as fire chief for their communities. “I have a great team working with me in Metchosin and we’ve earned a really good reputation,” she said. That team is comprised of two full-time staff and 36 volunteers, two of whom are women. “We have had up to eight women on the force, though. It’s the nature of volunteer forces that you have turnover. “Of course, there are still people out there who don’t think that women belong in this career,” Dunlop said. “They don’t realize that it isn’t all about upper body strength … it’s about training and knowing how to make the equipment work for you.” She added that being a woman can have its advantages on the job. “If we respond to a motor vehicle crash, it’s sometimes the smallest person who can get into a confined space to stabilize a victim. We’ve also had medical calls that were a good fit for a woman’s life experiences.” Dunlop realizes she can have a positive impact as a role model for young women. “I want them to realize that nothing is out of their reach. If you’re interested in a career like firefighting, give it a try. It’s the most rewarding job I can think of.”

Experienced communicator extolling Colwood’s virtues Sandra Russell Communications Manager, City of Colwood

You Are Invited

As one of seven children, Sandra Russell learned at an early age how to make herself heard and get her message across. Originally from Winnipeg, Russell came to the coast in 1990 to visit one of her siblings and fell in love with the milder climate, the friendly people and the natural beauty of British Columbia. She never left. Her civil service career began in the engineering department of the Capital Regional District. She later moved to human resources, then spent 20 years with CRD Health (later renamed VIHA, then Island Health), where she th finely honed her natural communications skills. “I’ve always loved words and images,” Russell says. “Even as a child I always kept a journal. I loved drawing pictures and storytelling.” That love of the narrative prompted her to combine her education in business administration with courses in graphic design. “I just love finding creative ways to engage and inform people.” Today, as communications manager for the City of Colwood, Russell sees her job as bridging the gap between the organization and its customers. “Whether I’m working with doctors or engineers or politicians, I try to help

When we understand each other, good things happen.” Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is admit when the municipality has made a mistake, she says. “We’re not perfect. But I’m not a spin doctor; when we make a mistake, the important thing to communicate is that we’ve learned from our error and how we’ve managed it so that it will never happen again.” The role of a communications manager has also required Russell to develop the ability to grasp new concepts and be able to communicate messages about those subjects. “Sometimes I have to learn a lot about some very complex issues very quickly; it can be a very steep learning curve.” For Russell, though, one of the best parts of the job is the human interaction. “We have open houses, and forums … and it brings people into the process, making them part of the communication,” she says. “And on a dayto-day basis, I get to meet the most fascinating people.” As a professional woman who is also raising three teenage children, Russell feels that it’s important to ensure balance in her life. “It’s great to help shape the community where my family lives. I want to be a part of making that place stronger – we all do.”

The lights of the slot machines at View Royal Casino glow behind marketing co-ordinator Gwen Richardson.

Making casino games seem not so scary part of marketer’s job Gwen Richardson Marketing Co-ordinator, View Royal Casino Gwen Richardson is always ready for a new challenge. She’s had opportunities to meet those in her role as marketing co-ordinator for the View Royal Casino. She’s been on the job since February of 2014 and has already made a difference. But make no mistake; it’s far from an easy task. The casino recently underwent considerable renovations: the remodeled 35,000-square-foot facility now boasts state-of-theart gaming with more than 300 slot machines and 30 gaming tables. But it isn’t just the gambling that Richardson is working to promote. “We have a licensed, full-service restaurant, a lounge, snackbar, entertainment … It’s more than just gambling. It’s a social experience,” she says. Part of the challenge of her job is to attract more people into the casino, while being ever mindful of the business’ vision and mission statement, she adds. “We’re here to promote the entertainment aspect of the casino within a context of responsible gaming. We want our customers to enjoy the experience without coming into it with an expectation of monetary gain. They may or may not win, but that’s not what it should be about.” To take some of the mystery of gaming out of the equation, Richardson has developed a new concept at the casino. Her ‘Virgin Academy’ is a promotion in which players can play a variety of games in a totally non-threatening context. “We use ‘funny money,’ so that people can learn the games without risking their own money at all. It’s fun and easy and people are loving it,” she says. Virgin Academy is just the first of many promotional tools Richardson has come up with for the casino. “It would be fantastic to offer more non-gaming entertainment at View Royal,” she says. “We have groups of young people coming in now for what is clearly a social evening and in the afternoons we get a lot of seniors arriving. The clientele is quite varied and we are sensitive to what each group wants out of the experience.” Richardson’s innovative approach to casino marketing is largely based upon her 25-year history as an entrepreneur. “I’ve worked in all kinds of businesses,” she says. “The truth is that the same principles apply regardless of what business you’re in. You have to know your product and your customers and tailor what you’re selling to what the customer wants.”

Goldstream Food Bank Society president Gayle Ireland sees people in desperate need during her days at the community’s pantry under the Langford Legion on Station Avenue.

Banking on the public’s support to feed West Shore people in need Gayle Ireland President and Volunteer Co-ordinator, Goldstream Food Bank Society Gayle Ireland recalls the earliest days of the Goldstream Food Bank. “When we opened in 1983, we thought that we’d be providing a short term, Band-Aid solution to hunger in our community,” she recalls. Today, the president of the Goldstream Food Bank Society, who also serves as its volunteer co-ordinator, occupies a small office cluttered with boxes. A computer and telephone sit on a plain desk, and file cabinets and paper clutter the office. “Now, here we are, 31 years later and the need is worse than ever,” she says. On top of her aforementioned duties, Ireland also manages cases, solicits food donations, packs boxes and generally does whatever is necessary to get food out to those who need it. “It’s great that we have the big box stores in our community … they do provide employment, but with the cost of housing these days, it’s impossible for a lot of people to make things meet, even with jobs,” Ireland says. “We have people coming in who are working two and three part-time jobs and can’t afford to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads.” That’s why Ireland works at the food bank almost every day of the week. The help she and her group

“It’s great we have the big box stores in our community … they do provide employment, but with the cost of housing these days, it’s impossible for a lot of people to make things meet, even with jobs.” – Gayle Ireland of volunteers provide manages to feed thousands of people annually. “We have more than 10,000 people through our door every year and that number isn’t going down,” she says. It’s the number of single women with children who are coming in for help that particularly disturbs Ireland. “About 32 per cent of our clients are children. And the number of single mothers is very high. It’s troubling.” But it’s not her job to fix whatever is wrong in society that causes hunger, she says. For her, it’s a matter of caring and having compassion for those who need her help. “Unless you’re very lucky, we’ve all had times when the cupboard was bare – when you’re down to your last can of soup. Of course we’re going to help.”

Connecting customers with Thrifty Foods a pleasure for newcomer

Photo contributed

Thrifty Foods marketing staffer Olivia Yanez, who hails from Mexico, joined the company shortly before Canada Day.

For Olivia Yanez, the opportunity to connect a community-minded company like Thrifty Foods in meaningful ways with local customers and organizations is a dream come true. Born and raised in Mexico City, Olivia moved to Victoria in 2008. “Both of my parents are proud of my professional accomplishments and happy to know that I have found a much better lifestyle in beautiful B.C.,” she says. Yanez’s academic and professional background in business and international marketing, including experience with companies such as Nestle and IBM, made the job a great fit. “I am passionate about good food and just as passionate about service,” she says. “Every time I can present our customers with a message, a product, a cause or an experience that will make them choose Thrifty Foods over any other grocery store, I’ve done my job right.” Joining Thrifty Foods’ marketing team just before Canada Day this year, Olivia considers herself “an orchestrator.” In charge of supporting promotions in-store while ensuring they’re relevant to Thrifty Foods’ loyal customers, she says the best part of her job is that there are not two days alike. “I sometimes participate in calls

with our Sobeys national team, collaborate with external agencies, develop marketing materials with our design team, communicate with stores … the list goes on!” On the West Shore, she says, “Colwood has a very special place in my mind, because the team from that location did an awesome job during our bike-a-thon fundraising event for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It was inspiring to witness their commitment and enthusiasm – that truly represented the spirit of the Better Food Giveaway promotion.” Olivia appreciates also the opportunity to work with a company that aligns with her personal values and beliefs. She’s particularly excited about Thrifty Foods’ mission to “Eat Better, Feel Better and Do Better.” Having Jamie Oliver on board with his philosophical approach to cook-

ing, not to mention his cookbooks and dishware, is a great part of that, says Olivia, who is eagerly collecting stamps at the register to put toward some nice cutlery. And now that Thrifty Foods has adopted the No. 1 loyalty program in Canada – the AirMiles Reward Program – “our customers can expect to benefit from a new variety of promotions and more flexibility to choose what better suits their needs. From a dream vacation to cash off their grocery bill, the possibilities are multiplying.” Looking ahead, Thrifty Foods has long been a part of the community’s seasonal celebrations, and Olivia looks forward to sharing the festivities. “Christmas always brings memories of family gatherings, sharing with people you care about and enjoying the best food … Need I say more?”

Sands Funeral Chapels have been serving Greater Victoria for over 100 years. It’s that history of compassion and community involvement that brought manager Julie Evans to work in the West Shore. “I have passion for what I do and compassion for those I serve,” she says. With 18 years in the industry, Julie is a Resolve Through Sharing counsellor and an Arbor Award of Excellence recipient. “Being a funeral director

means so much to me; it is s a privilege to be entrusted with the care of families’ loved ones.” She and her four year-old daughter Madeline came to Victoria to be near family and are excited to be part of the community. “Stop me on the street. Ask me any question. Drop in for tea. I would love to get to know you.” Julie founded the annual Pet Blessing Ceremony and initiated a “Walk and Talk” allowing people to chat with experts in different fields as they get some exercise. After a month in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, she also offers seminars for emergency services personnel.

LOCAL WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Catering to her guests comes naturally to Sheraton manager Leigh Ann Stephenson Catering Manager, Four Points Sheraton Victoria Gateway A strong organizational sense is critical in the hospitality industry. In Leigh Ann Stephenson’s case, it’s also second nature. “I’ve always been a very organized person, and this career is just a natural fit for my personality,” she says. As catering manager at the Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway hotel it’s her responsibility to take event inquiries from potential clients, formulate proposals and cost estimates, then do everything necessary to bring those events to fruition. “It’s the details that make or break an event,” Stephenson says. “Whether the event that you’re managing involves only a few people or a group of 2,000, the success of your project always involves the little things.” Stephenson honed her skills as an events manager for one of Victoria’s largest event and catering companies, The Truffles Group. Her 15-year career with Truffles taught her that the simultaneous attention to every facet of an event is critically important to making that event both seamless and memorable. In her position with the Four Points Sheraton, Stephenson says she is essentially a ‘department of one,’ but that

doesn’t perturb her in the least. “I guess I’ve always liked challenges and this provides me with a level of responsibility and ownership that’s very rewarding.” Abdul Melhen, the Sheraton sales and marketing manager who works with Stephenson, said her intuitive sense of what clients want is vitally important to her success. “She has a real sense of the needs of our client, sometimes more than the client themselves,” he says. Stephenson has seen a shift in the nature of business travellers and events clients since she started in the industry. “These days we have a lot more female business travellers. In fact, that trend has been reflected in the management of the hospitality industry itself,” she says. “When I first started out, it really was a bit of an ‘old boys’ network,’ but these days there is pretty much an equal gender division in management. On the events management side, I think women are starting to dominate.” Stephenson feels the natural evolution of women in business was bound to happen. “At the Sheraton, part of our marketing is toward the casual corporate traveller. The fact that a significant percentage of those business people are now women is great, but it doesn’t affect the way we do business. People are people, after all.”
