NEWS FOR ALUMNI AND THE GREATER COLLEGE COMMUNITY | SUMMER 2013 EDITION COMMENCEMENT 2013 RECOGNIZES 126TH GBC GRADUATING CLASS
The Joseph West Jones Center was home to GBC’s 126th Commencement on Friday, May 3 as 216 excited graduates “turned their tassels” and began the next stage in their lives. Students from across America and from nations abroad took their walk across the stage to receive their coveted diploma, heartfelt handshake, and boisterous applause from family and friends.
While the room was nearly full to capacity, over 360 more people watched the festivities live on the GBC website. Families and friends overseas (or just downstate) were able to watch and cheer their favorite graduate online. The College Webmaster reports that over graduation weekend, 1958 people viewed the GBC graduation website. Viewers from India, Liberia, and Israel, joined viewers from Newark, Newport, and New Castle to celebrate this important day.
The 2013 Commencement Speaker was The Honorable Rita M. Landgraf, Secretary of Health and Social Services for the State of Delaware. Landgraf oversees a budget in excess of $1.8 billion, providing critical services to Delaware citizens ranging from health care to child care, from Medicaid to mental health. Landgraf praised the Class of 2013, citing their “persistence, perseverance, and passion.” She went on to remind them that each person has an individual story, and urged them to “continue to write new chapters in that story.” Graduates listened closely as she shared some guiding principles for a career, including always playing fair, being patient with others, and knowing when to lead and when to follow. Landgraf emphasized dealing with failure, declaring “that’s when we learn the most about ourselves.” In recognition of her remarkable career of service, she was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree.
Another high point for the graduates was the presentation of the Excellence in Teaching Award by President Mohammad Ilyas and Academic Dean Alison White. The 2013 recipient, Dr. William Rivers, has taught at GBC since 1988. Reading from actual student evaluations, President Ilyas described Dr. Rivers as someone who is “always available to students,” “expects quality,” and “keeps students engaged.” In accepting the award, Rivers praised his students, concluding with “Class of 2013 – go get ‘em!”
Following the ceremony, students lingered over refreshments reminiscing with friends, faculty and staff, promising to stay in touch and excitedly sharing plans for the future. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2013. More photos of the exciting day can be found on page 10 of this issue of Reflections.
THE GIFT OF EDUCATION
Support the 2014 GBC Annual Fund
It’s Fall and the hallways are full of laughter, new friends and new textbooks for a new school year. In some classrooms, however, there are empty seats. Increasingly, talented and deserving students find they cannot afford higher education -- that the classroom doors seem closed to them – their seat unoccupied. More than ever, these students need your help.
Annual Fund 2014 kicks off in October, providing an opportunity for all of our alumni to help “Open the Doors to Education.” At GBC, our mission is to make quality education accessible – to keep the doors to education open for every talented student despite income. So each year, we ask our alumni, employees, parents, and friends of the College to give generously to the Annual Fund. Every dollar provides badly needed scholarship funding for needy students – allowing them to enter those doors and take their seats.
We hope you will remember your days at GBC – the excitement, the friendships, and especially the way your education here changed your life. Help us pass on that opportunity to the next generation who hope to take your seat in the classroom and follow your footsteps to a successful career. Watch for your Annual Fund letter by mail in October or visit www.gbc.edu/giving/ to learn how to give online.
Remember, even a modest gift when added to many others can change a life. Help us “Open the Doors to Education” for every deserving student.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees E. Thomas Harvey, III, graduation speaker and Honorary Degree recipient The Honorable Rita M. Landgraf and President Mohammad Ilyas.

TAYLOR HONORED FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE HAPPENINGS
Ms. Teresa Taylor ‘09, MBA ‘12, Alpha Chi Sponsor at Goldey-Beacom College, is one of seven campus sponsors to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. The award, which was announced at the society’s annual national convention on April 6, is a peer recognition award that honors influential service.
Ms. Taylor serves as a regional vice president of Alpha Chi and under her direction, the Goldey-Beacom chapter received a 2013 Star Chapter Award. This award indicates a commitment to foster undergraduate research and academic dialogue on campus, an effort to nurture academic professionalism around the students and a determination to maintain a healthy and active chapter life.
Dr. Trisha Yarbrough, executive director of Alpha Chi says, “Alpha Chi succeeds because of volunteer sponsors who invest their lives in students. Ms. Taylor is a prime example of that commitment.”
Alpha Chi, inducting 13,000 students annually on over 300 campuses, invites the top 10 percent of juniors, seniors and graduate students to membership.
Inducted into Alpha Chi in 2007, Ms. Taylor got involved quickly in the organization. She held various chapter
positions from Treasurer/Secretary, Vice President and President. With Dr. Ann Kneavel’s retirement, the organization was looking for a new primary sponsor. This position was soon taken in Fall 2011 by Ms. Taylor, who demonstrated the passion for the organization. She learned the sponsor duties quickly and has had two successful years while hoping for more.
Outside of Alpha Chi, Ms. Taylor works in the Goldey-Beacom College Business Office. Starting out as a work study in 2005, she has worked hard to move up the ranks and currently holds the title of Accountant/ Business Office Coordinator. Beyond work, she manages time to get involved with church where she plays a major role in the Youth Group program that is held every Sunday afternoon for a few hours.
Even as Sunday is filled with church activities, Ms. Taylor is still finding time to plan her wedding to Mr. Stephen Watkins. The wedding is set for July 27 just outside Ms. Taylor’s hometown in Maryland. The couple is planning to hold off on taking a honeymoon right away as Mr. Watkins is in the military on active orders receiving training. After the training is complete, the couple does plan to escape to warm tropical weather.
LANK NAMED 2013 OUTSTANDING YOUNG WILMINGTONIAN
Jeffrey Lank ’97 has been named the 2013 Outstanding Young Wilmingtonian by the Wilmington Jaycees Organization. As a project manager at JP Morgan Chase, a successful entrepreneur of Seahorse Coaching LLC (which is focused on providing professional development training to individuals and companies around the country), and a graduate of Goldey-Beacom College, Jeff has a long-standing record of service to others and volunteerism ahead of his personal goals. This award, in its 72nd year, is given annually to a person between 21 and 40 who has bettered themselves and their community. Past recipients include James Baker, who became Wilmington’s mayor, local boxing legend Dave Tiberi and United States VicePresident, Joe Biden.
Jeff began community service work as a child while gaining skills and advancing to become an Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. Lank has always enjoyed being surrounded by people and often found his sense of humor led to a vast variety of friends. His ability to relate to everyone helped him recruit over 500 members to the Jaycees organization which has given each of them an opportunity to improve personally or professionally. Through his recruitment, Lank helped grow the Delaware Jaycees organization by 41% in just one year, not including those he recruited around the country. This dedication toward others was a major reason in selecting Jeff as the recipient in this year. In addition to helping Delaware, Jeff spread opportunities to other young
professionals by starting and growing chapters in several states across the nation. He continued to serve the Jaycees organization as a volunteer and became the first National President from Delaware to lead the United States Junior Chamber in 2010. It’s uncommon that a member of the organization has received this prestigious honor.
In addition to serving the Jaycees organization, Jeff is a dedicated Director for both the Delaware Center of Horticulture and the Riley’s Toys Foundation. He also serves as a Delaware State Commissioner for the Governor’s Commission on Community and Volunteer service. Recently, Jeff agreed to chair New Castle’s Annual Separation Day Celebration in an effort to increase awareness and support of such a key part of the state’s history. Jeff resides with his fiancée, Tina Macko, who shares his passion in helping others. Jeff stated that he was especially honored to receive this award because the program’s original sponsor 72 years ago was Goldey-Beacom College.
Without his education from Goldey-Beacom College and his life experience as a Jaycees, Jeff didn’t feel he would have been developed to be such a strong member of the Wilmington community. As the Outstanding Young Wilmingtonian, Jeff is eligible for the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce’s “Ten Outstanding Young Americans.”
